I dunno why, voodoo has been heavy on battery consumption since I used the earlier version for Eclair on JM8/JM9. Only when I moved to the stock kernel voodoo thing did battery life improve. Maybe it's my usage.

1. Digi 3G always on (about 30 mins of calls and 10 SMS per day)
2. WIFI always off
3. BT always off
4. GPS always off
5. K-9 Mail accessing my work email account via IMAP IDLE protocol (24x7)
6. GMail pushing 2 mail accounts to my phone
7. Tweetdeck active with 3 accounts (FB, Twitter and 4Square), polling every hour
8. Launcher Pro Plus, but with no widgets on home screen
9. SBSH Phoneweaver always on, managing timed profile changes
10. Whatsapp always on
11. GTalk always on
12. SMS Backup & Restore (daily backup at 5am)
13. Call Logs Backup & Restore (daily backup at 6am)
14. Titanium Backup (daily full backup at 4am)

1. my 3G always on when i am outside
2. wifi always on whenever i can find wifi connection but mostly at home
3. always off
4. off
5. not installed
6. gmail 1 account
7. facebook and twitter sync every 4 hours.. fancy widget sync every 6 hours
8. launcher pro free with 7 full widgets screen
9. not sure what it is
10. always on
11. always on
12. n/a
13. n/a
14. n/a
add:
15. brightness to 2nd lowest
16. live wallpaper

can easily survive until 2nd day if i use it with normal usage..(fully charged at night and left around 40% at 2nd night

Voodoo JM9 is so far excellent on my DXJG4 firmware. I have just reflashed by Odin and batterystats isn't very mature yet but at least the values shown are impressive.

During an 8 hour idle sleep, the power consumption is only 2%. Wifi sleep policy set to Never. However no push mail set up yet. Feeds are once an hour.

Smoothness? Yes. The phone is snappier. Harder to stress it to the point where it lags. Installing apps from market used to stop me from using the phone momentarily. Now the lag is negligible for small apps. Worse case is just a 0.5 second stutter.

I think I found the right lagfix for Eclair. Until I change to Froyo, this shall be my configuration. biggrin.gif

Voodoo JM9 not the same as Voodoo Beta4? My FW is DXJG4 as well.

No, not same. I cannot use Voodoo's kernel. My phone won't go to sleep and it uses 48% in one night. Only original SGS Voodoo kernel like Voodoo JM8 and JM9 works for my phone.

Tweetdeck is a major battery sucker. Mine is active with 2 accounts, Twitter and FB, set to poll every hour. My battery consumption has gone up double than before I installed Tweetdeck. But I m still using Tweetdeck despite it is a major battery life drainer, coz it is such a good app and since it is in beta I hope the full version will come out better on battery consumption.
Other than tweetdeck, I'm also using tweetcaster. It is different and have certain features Tweetdeck lack of, like trending and customizable themes. I like both actually.. biggrin.gif

Too early to tell, but I don't really feel a big difference so far. I just didn't like voodoo (voodoo5 pre6) because it was a battery sucker on my phone.

But I can tell you that the recovery mode options available under this 'universal lagfix kernel' is mind boggling!! I probably won't even need autokiller because lots of kernel tweaks/optimisations can be enabled from the recovery menu.
*
Yeh, Voodoo on default kernel was a battery sucker for me too. But strangely, the earlier betas - Voodoo 1 and 2 - were okay despite locking the CPU at a constant 1Ghz. Could just be my imagination.

Did you try Voodoo JM8? Was there a discernible difference in terms of performance/power consumption? Reason I'm asking is that I'm on Voodoo JM8 and too darn lazy to move up to Voodoo JM9 unless there's a marked improvement.

Also, I find that games like Abduction which use the sensor will not properly disable the sensor after exiting. This is a huge power drain for me even on Voodoo JM8 as the sensor's running at 100% the whole time. I've only been able to fix this by reseting the phone. Weird.

I've identified a few battery sucking apps which I've either uninstalled or do not run at all, not sure if you guys agree:
1. WhatsApp (lagged, delayed messages, sucked power, no way to disable)
2. Trillian (this was a real battery killer - I hate it now)
3. eBuddy (was always a battery killer)
4. Tweetdeck (great app, shame about the power suckiness)

Yes I tried Voodoo JM8. No visible difference with JM9. To move from Voodoo JM8 to JM9, you don't need to disable the lagfix. Just directly flash the kernel over. That's what is mention in forum, but I did a full reset and flash. smile.gif

Whatsapp does take some power but I cannot live without it already. It has become a routine to use it to message to my friends. I use whatsapp much more often than SMS.

Ok. Since now more and more user are discovering it, I re-post this here, which I have highlighted before in V5:

Update on 27-Oct-2010:

Apps that leave a sensor bug running all the time that constantly drains your battery life:

1. PapagoX5 (The first I discover)
2. Abduction (it is a game)
3. Drocap2
4. Doodle jump (by Jason)
5. NOVA (New)

Anyone discover anything new can add on to the list..

Can't live without Whatsapp and Tweetdeck, these are 2 of my most used apps.

My 3 biggest complaints about the SGS are poor battery life, the constant lagging and lack of centralized push (ala BIS). Other than that, the phone is superb, a big improvement over my previous phones.

Am thinking to get myself a BB Torch as main phone and the SGS as my do-all-other-things device.. smile.gif

Budget constraint only...

Hey, thanks for the feedback. Guess I'll stay with JM8-Voodoo till a better Froyo comes along (or CM6!)
I agree that WhatsApp is really awesome. I used it as an SMS/MMS replacement for a few weeks until messages got delayed sometimes by a day. Also encountered lags when sending messages. I dumped it for those very reasons. My friends who both own Desires complained of the delayed messages but they didn't experience any lags. No surprises right that the Desire performs way better than our SGS? smile.gif Anyways, if they can fix their servers and minimize the lags, I'd be more than eager to jump on the WhatsApp wagon again. Good to know that you find it useful though. smile.gif

Oh yeah, I recall reading your post. But for the life of me, I couldn't find it for reference. Thanks for reposing. I didn't do an exhaustive search but I found a similar complaint on XDA but it didn't generate much attention. But either way, I am particularly cautious of running these apps.

I found that LineUp (game) to be a culprit as well. Not sure about Hungry Shark though.

Same here, except for the centralized push. Guess I can live without a constant stream of emails smile.gif.
You read my mind, am thinking of a separate workhorse phone with good ergonomics and stellar battery life so I can make the SGS my weekend phone. Am even considering a pre-owned Treo Pro (WinMo my gods!). Guess my love affair with Palm will never die.

I dumped meebo because I didn't like the interface. eBuddy and Trillian look so much better - but at the cost of battery life. Now that you've mentioned meebo being conservative on power usage - I might give it a try again. Ever tried Nimbuzz or Fring?

I meant centralized push like how BBM, Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare work on the BB platform - immediate notification, no stupid shit like polling every number of hours or so. Man, I really miss the superb notification features on my old (now dead) BB Curve 8900.. K-9 push mail on SGS works nearly 90% as well as the push mail on the BB, so no big issue for me.

Palm.. I miss my old Treo too. Somehow I never quite liked the Pre.

But the problem with MSN Talk is it is only if you have a msn account, if you have Yahoo then you need to install another App, i'm quite happy with Meebo actually but i do keep Ebuddy cos i dont mind using it once in a while altough it sucks battery life. Wish everyone can standardize and use Gtalk drool.gif

no have not tried Nimbuzz or Fring, actually downloaded Nimbuzz but when it ask for Register, i gave up, although it is free, i just do not want to register with so many IM apps but if someone can confirm that this 2 IM app you mentioned is worth trying i might change my mind

I am not sure about Nimbuzz, but Fring and IMO is worth trying. Battery usage, I am not sure how these two compare to other IM apps.

I got both installed and now I am undecided to keep which. tongue.gif
