I *think* WhatsApp uses the sync setting to auto discover people in your contacts list who are using WhatsApp.

It doesn't sync messages over, that's done over a data connection be it Wifi or cell. You might get away with disabling sync, then doing manual refreshes to your contacts list every now and again if you intend to scrimp on your data usage.

just want to share my review of my SGP Ultra Oleophobic that I've used for a week now.. vs a cheap rm15 SP that I bought when i got the phone..

SGP Pros
+smooth when swyping, no drag like normal crystal clear SP
+oil cleans off easily, can wipe off with finger also
+good clarity at every angle, no rainbow effect
+comes with camera lens protector as well
+very good packaging, comes with microfiber, squeegee to eliminate bubbles, additional sticker to stick dust out..

Cons
+expensive
+each pack comes with 2 pieces.. dunno when I can use the other piece..

the thing i like most is that it is easier to swype and no drag..unlike the cheap clear SP i was using.. and it is easier to clean the oil off after making calls.

There are a number of unattended restore options available (probably also there in the free version):

Restore Missing Apps with Data
Restore Newer Apps + All System Data
Restore Newer Versions of User Apps
Restore All Apps with Data

I'm guessing you should try the first one after manually restoring or installing selected apps.. I've only tried the last option before, so in my case, it's either all manual restoration or all fully automated.

I know what you mean by the tediousness of having to do things 1 app at a time. The last time I did a major reinstall/restore task, I actually remotely controlled my rooted but freshly flashed phone from the computer, using the 'Droid VNC Server' app on the phone (debugging mode on, adb port forwarding enabled, ultraVNC viewer on PC). Much easier to mouseclick things than to use finger to navigate the phone.. smile.gif

Cool, that's really helpful. I'll have to remember this the next time I do a major refresh. Thanks. smile.gif

I am doing it. See page 7 on my post.

I tried this method earlier on with original voodoo v3 + oclf. Later I uninstall oclf coz I scared got conflict.

After reading the thread at xda.  I decided to try again using the new voodoo with stock kernel (which believe to be better than original voodoo in terms of battery saving) +  oclf.

So far,  after half day of use.  My phone is still flying. :-)

i heard voodoo with stock kernel will eat your space.. they call it garbage collector.. is it true?

That's the older version based on a different filesystem (NILFS) which has been taken offline. The current one (based on JM8 kernel) uses ext4 - I am using this now. It is about as quick as the original voodoo (custom kernel) but sips less power in my experience.

Yup, correct, once you installed Whatsapp, it will be running and you can send/received message anytime as long as Data/Wifi is on.
(doesnt matter you disable sync or not).

Just hope that it will not take up too much battery (as of now, I dont see any battery drain) and data usage.

Cheers.

That's right. NILFS continuously takes a snapshot of your filesystem. These snapshots get stored in an every-growing log that in time will end up using more and more space. It is a little bit like a garbage collector. Haha.. but in all seriousness a garbage collector is a mechanism used in software engineering as a means of de-allocating memory by clearing up orphaned or stale files and links.

kmrdeva, I am hoping that the Voodoo in stock JM8 kernel solves my power issues. I was on JM5 and Voodoo beta 1, 2, 3, 4 and 3.0 earlier and they were pretty hard on battery life. I found beta2 to be better for battery life, but beta4 and 3.0 to be faster. How long have you been on JM8+Voodoo?

I've only had experience with the Voodoo lagfix 3.0 (the one without the colour thing) and also OCLF before I tried the JM8 stock kernel with Voodoo. It's been about a week so far and I can definitely state that for my phone, the JM8+voodoo lagfix is less power hungry than Voodoo 3.0. If I remember correctly, OCLF hit battery even less, but then I didn't quite like its 'fast here but slow there' kinda performance. Still using OCLF to root my phone, though (might as well since I've donated to RyanZA).

The Voodoo that comes baked into a stock kernel is based on JM8. If you are already on JM8 firmware, you should be able to directly do an update in recovery. But to be on the safe side, you can go the roundabout way:
1. disable voodoo 3.0
2. reboot so it reverts to RFS.
3. ensure RFS is in use via Quadrant (800+ score)
4. enter recovery mode, run update.zip that has the Voodoo + JM8 stock kernel
5. after that it should reboot but will still be using RFS because of 'disable lagfix' folder
6. remove disable lagfix folder
7. reboot to enable Voodoo
8. Verify with Quadrant

Phew. If you aren't on JM8, you need to disable Voodoo first. Then only flash over to JM8.
