AS the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 17 times in their history - 10 times in the last 11 seasons. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup twice, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Hi alien, I uploaded the Scholes Centurion video (a compilation of all 100 goals he scored throughout his career in Man United).

If it's allowed, I thought why not share with other forummers by posting the link in the first few posts. The link is : http://rapidshare.com/files/367460321/PS_Cntrn1x0.rar =)

Scholes and Fletcher are perfect partners

QUOTE
From Bryan Robson, to Paul Ince to Roy Keane, Sir Alex Ferguson has long been reliant on a midfield general.

But the United manager – who spent so long fruitlessly searching for a successor to Keane following the Irishman’s acrimonious departure in 2005 – believes Old Trafford has finally learned to live without the traditional enforcer that has typified his teams down the years.

That was never more evident than last Sunday when Paul Scholes effortlessly controlled the centre of the park against a combative Liverpool midfield of Steven Gerrard, Raul Meireles and Christian Poulson.

While Robson et al would have rolled their sleeves up and prepared for a good old-fashioned dust-up, Scholes oozed class with every deft flick and rapier-like pass.

That, combined with Darren Fletcher’s tireless energy, Ferguson believes has helped United evolve into a team that can cope without the raw aggression of its midfield leaders of the past.

“Bryan Robson was an unbelievable player,” said Ferguson. “Unfortunately, when I came to the club he was 31. I wish I’d had him when he was 21.

“Roy Keane was a different kind of leader. He led by example whereas Robson managed the team on the pitch.

“But you cannot beat Scholes as a footballer. He is an unbelievable player and will always be considered one of the best of all time here.

Impossible

“We don’t lack leadership in our general game. Paul Scholes runs the midfield every game. Liverpool tried to man mark him last week – impossible.

“We don’t lack leadership in terms of the philosophy of our game.”

Fletcher is the closest Ferguson has come to a marauding midfielder since parting ways with Keane.

After watching Eric Djemba-Djemba fail to establish himself at Old Trafford, while Owen Hargreaves’ injuries have prevented him from becoming the lynchpin United had hoped upon his move from Bayern Munich in 2007, Fletcher’s development has been a godsend.

Even if he is not a carbon copy of Robson or Keane, he has emerged as one of United’s most important players over the past two seasons and was a serious consideration when Ferguson came to choosing his next captain during the summer.

The armband was eventually handed to Nemanja Vidic, but Ferguson did so in the knowledge that Scotland captain  Fletcher would lead with or without the title of skipper.

“The subject of picking a captain was straightforward,” he said. “In the last two or three years Gary Neville has been the club captain, but as we know, he has had injuries so there is an inconsistency as to when he is in your team. For that reason we had to look elsewhere.

“We need a captain who will play every week. Because we have so many options in midfield, from time to time we change it around.

Qualities

“Paul Scholes doesn’t want to be captain. Darren Fletcher has leadership qualities, but we change the midfield a lot.

“With Nemanja Vidic, he just signed a new contract in the summer and will play all the time. If he is fit, he plays.”

While Ferguson would justifiably point to the trophies United have since Keane’s exit as evidence that life goes on without the Irishman, hardcore supporters would still claim Old Trafford isn’t the same without a swashbuckling general.

Ferguson, though, throws up a number of alternatives when it comes to the greatest player in his time at the club.

“Robson was an incredible presence in the dressing room,” he said. “He was loved by the players and tactically very astute.

“Keane was a driving force, but neither were the best footballers. They had unbelievable qualities that made them great players, but the great players we’ve had in terms of real quality, you have to look at Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes.

“But to try to say who was the best of them all is very difficult.

“No player has run up and down the touchline in the Premier League as long as Giggs. He’s done it since it started.

“His consistency and quality mark him down as the best player ever in the Premier League. He is an incredible player.”

are u sure this is Wan!? When i first came, u were like the most serious guy in here besides alien. It was like, every post is like an essay covering every part, sometimes with news about the team, sometimes with lineup sheets. But.. drool.gif

Jokes aside, anyone else thinks that Fletcher is ready to cement his name from rotations in midfield? I personally thinks that he should spend more time with Scholes to learn a little more before he establish himself as a regular starter. It will be rotational with Anderson back, Gibson catching up, Scholes never seem to be lesser than what he have, and Owen Hargreaves back rclxms.gif Frankly, I only watched the first half of the champions league game against Rangers and I thought Fletcher's long passes are a lot behind Scholes'. It wasn't too much of a help when the team isn't fielding their best 11 especially against a tinier team. I think Valencia was in the game, and it never really seem like he is getting fed like how he was fed from Scholes. Before I went snoozing, I thought that I wouldn't be surprised if United draws goaless.

Hargreaves can play right midfield as well i think(he can do good crosses), so that's definitely good news, the real combo I'd like to see is Anderson+Fletcher(i think this duo will be the starting pair of CM for us for the next 5-8 years), and then Gibson, Cleverley, Eikrem will follow suit

btw: Colbie Smulders was only drool.gif for half of the episode (if you know what i mean laugh.gif )

Don't forget Ando as well. Suddenly our options there looking great. With Valencia out, we might see Hargreaves play in his position where he was great.

Scholes, Fletcher, Carrick, Anderson, Hargreaves, Gibson.

You miss one hell of a player. Fletcher + Carrick(minus the long pass, he was more economical with his passing) + Mascherano + a lot more. One minute he was near or even inside the penalty area to score a goal, and once the opposition counter attack, he'll be the one making the tackles on the other side of the pitch, and then straight away join the next attack. That's the kind of player he was. Box to box. Keane-Butt/Scholes. I didn't see many live games back in the day, but from the few live games they showed, I still remember how we look really poor whenever he misses a game. Butt-Scholes don't look as effective against most sides. Always lacking something.

16m for Carrick, 18m Ando, 17m Hargreaves.
Pretty expensive CMs there..

Carrick back in form, Hargreaves as a backup to Fletcher(another option that brings the same sort of energy), Ando with his creativity and hopefully more consistent performance.. we're set!

City win would be better. Rivals or not, Chelsea are running away with the league currently so we need them to lose, even if it means cheering on Liverpool and City to do it.

This is a serious football game. Tackles have been flying in (PES commentary lol)
Teveth has been poor so far. I'm surprised though with Silva's defending ability. He managed to nick the ball few times from Ski's midfielders who are at least twice his size.

City's midfield have been immense. They did a good job closing down space against Chelsea's midfield. Especially around their penalty box.

Now's the chance for Man Utd to catch up, but it's Bolton, so don't get too excited just yet. It's not a done deal. sweat.gif

Here's to hoping. wink.gif

Arsenal's past few season had follow similar patterns:

banging goals and wins left and right at the start of season, but fading away towards the end, so hopefully this season will continue the trend

Well Teveth goal would count for nothing if we didn't get the job done against Bolton tomorrow.
Here's hoping for another hattrick from Berba.

VDS

O'Shea--Vidic--Evans--Evra

Nani--Fletcher--Ando/Scholes--Giggs

Berbatov--Rooney

but then again, we got Valencia match after that...wonder how will SAF rotate the squad unsure.gif

Nah. Fletch is still young, he wont have much problem to play week in week out. Plus Fletch main strong point is his stamina. I'd say Fletch-Ando.

the game is like a rugby (tackling, blocking)

Overall, nice match esp. the end to end play

Too bad that Man Citeh using 4-3-2-1

With 3 kickbadass DM around (barry, toure and de jong), any team would struggle.

Anelka looks ok to me, Drogba not that on-form. Essien frustrating with all the long shots.

Man Citeh playing counterattacking, Boyata looks like deployed to distrupt the flow of Chelsea attacking and he did well to contain the likes of Drogba. Toure defended quite good for City.

I was a little surprised that Chelsea did not bombard the flank. There's occasion that the flank is quite "open" and unattended.

Man Citeh weak point on this match was the defence (of course we know that they have only 3 fit defender).

Overall, we gained from the other Blues loss. Now time to wake up the Devils !

Yeah, it was rough like rugby on the pitch. I think Scholes and Giggs cannot play in the game against them ohmy.gif simply whack only. U saw the way Silva whack Alex on his leg when Alex was blocking the ball to let it go for a goal kick. The way Barry shoulder tackled Ivanovic.... The 3 DM isnt too scary though. I think its more like Chelsea being weaken by Lampard's absence rather than City is good. Lampard will be back against us if he dont get injured again. It will be a whole new Chelsea then.

I changed my mind with Fletcher not starting against bolton. I forgotten that Gibson-Ando was in midfield in midweek and not Fletcher-Anderson

u guys should stop being such a hypocrite, back when United drew 3-3 with Everton, bukan main lagi sembah Cahill and Arteta. The posts i see here commenting Chelsea's lost is nowhere near what some Chelsea fans had to say about the draw 2 weeks ago.

Yea can't underestimate them even though they are without Silva and Villa but they are still looking strong in their league games
Think Anderson,Park and Ferdinand will involve in these games. Too bad Carrick and Hargreaves are still not available... need to rely on the two old men again tongue.gif

Please don't leave Berba on the bench. He is on sizzling form right now, he should be able to start 2 games in a row, together with Rooney. Owen, sorry mate, you need to sit, we need Rooney more than you.

It's only been two games. A miss penalty in the first one, and in both games we surrendered our lead annoyingly. Won't make the same mistake again unless they really want to test SAF's patience.

Ya,that is why I'm saying that would be an upset,Chelsea will be at home,SB is like a fortress to Chelsea, and Arsenal was not up to par just now,if they defended the same way against Chelsea as they did against W.Brom,I'm going for 3-0 to Chelsea rclxms.gif

Innocent.
Danny Welbeck has been charged with violent conduct by the FA.
They have reviewed the video evidence of the incident with Gerrard and charged him(Welbeck) with "high / dangerous use of the face" against Gerrard's elbow.

He can't do that to Rooney or any other senior Utd players. He's lashing his dissatisfaction towards our younger player. What the hell? laugh.gif

City's midfield have been immense. They did a good job closing down space against Chelsea's midfield. Especially around their penalty box.

Now's the chance for Man Utd to catch up, but it's Bolton, so don't get too excited just yet. It's not a done deal. sweat.gif

Here's to hoping. wink.gif

Wan iz haz succez jinx Chelski. Citeh played like sh*t last nite, thanks for Wan that they win. Not even a glance of ambition in Mancini lineup, 3 defensive midfielder in HOME game, this worst than Jose reign with Maka-alele as anchor man in Chelski time. It even worst than Leeds when we played that at FA cup last season!!

I'm expecting Kevin Davies to bully Evans tonight unless Rio start, Bolton will continue with their long ball tactics and if they ambitious enough, they will start with Elmander and Davies upfront. The team need to win, they have to.

chill mate, we dont want it to come back around and bite us now. nod.gif

for now kena keep low dulu.bolton will be their physical best as usual, and its up to the lads to break them up and sniff out any mistakes and at the same time reduce ours.best situation is the lads dont pay any heed to the results elsewhere and concentrate on our game.

Oh God, i sure hope we don't drop points tonight. After thinking about it, we havent won away yet this season....

Added on September 26, 2010, 6:13 pmbest things that can happen today, we beat Bolton 2-0 , stoke to win newcastle and Wolves to win Villa.

Why 2-0? If that happen, their GD will be -2, and they will be above Liverpool. They will be at 3rd from the back xD

and worst of all, every time the ball was in the air, Evan loses out. geez. physical presence of Elmander is very very VERY scary. makes Evans look like Marilyn Monroe.

wah, Zat Knight's height is equivalent to VDS.

any set pieces or corners are damn damn damn dangerous wth.

Vidic must stand on Evans to defend Knight from getting a head on the ball.

We need to exploit the wing that Bolton gave us!!!!

Playing through center will be difficult. They are parking when we attack.

Evans need to have more composure. Rio is in subs. Subs for him please!

JOS for Rafael. We can exploit the flanks!

And Evans has played well. It's easy to focus on him since he's the 'scapegoat' right now. The whole defence have been scrambling away trying to thwart Bolton's physical plays.

btw just a thought on the Sneijder issue.

of course he wants to join Man Utd, because Inter is crap now with Benitez there, he's willing to join anywhere now.

When chelsea or any league leaders lose/lost, we must try to take advantage of the situation and gain maximum points. instead, slack-ass performance lead to 3 draws away from home and letting in silly goals for fun.

today's match:

evans is shit. oshea is shit. the whole midfield only scholes and nani looks alright. anyway, the whole team looks so inconsistent week in week out.
like that want to win champions league? pretty hard, don't you think?

screw the unbeaten tag, Fulham is als unbeaten but 5/6 is draw, what's the point? we're just 4 points better than them, that's all!

No team that falters away will win the league, simply because every team can perform near perfect at home but not away. Our stronghold has always been getting points from away games to topple Chelsea's excellent home record but at this rate, it's not gonna happen.

What's more worrying is the fact that we conceded 2-3 goals in the last 4 domestic games, with practically the same team that goes on with the longest clean sheet streak a couple of seasons ago! What happened, SAF needs to ask the squad.

I don't really mind of those at the back, we'll be able to sort it out.

But as I've been saying since whenever, we don't have that creative midfielder, other than Scholes.

And so it seems that he's on an off day today, we don't have anyone else. Nani is a winger, mind you, and have yet to transform himself prolly 75% of Ronaldo.

An outright attacking midfielder is what we need, not two CMs.

i see your point there. but there are other problems i see in united as well.

rooney's confidence and mentality is shaken which leads to his poor first touch and controlling become so poor.
even with valencia and hargreaves back, we might not play at full force. really wanna see anderson get playing quickly.

can anyone here really see us winning the champions league this season? honestly pls..

Ferguson needs to inject the back 4 with someone solid and hard. Our midfield needs some fixing too. Tak consistent lah. Last week we played so good now we play like shit. How to win anything like this. Need to look into more players. Training youth is one thing but we can't wait 3-4 years for them to mature. We need someone who can help us as soon as he comes in.

lol the jinxing factor.we "believe" too much on them laugh.gif

we draw its evans/o'sheas fault it seems...now that i find it very funny laugh.gif

why not other names instead??anyway the one week we can safely say a pt gained instead of 2 dropped.it was a lacklustre display for most of the match from our lads and quite surprisingly nothing changed.tho owen came in and saving us is what we need when were not coming from behind but when were level.

well if you watched united long enough, this mini derby is always a tough one, and it just proved that way.well with what happened yeseterday it kinda softened the blow.positive things we should take in to consideration, we can still make a come back, the defense was conctrated for the full 90 and most of all any team can drop pts just as saturday proved.so apa mau takut sgt, if iot was the match day 30++ then boleh la kata risau..but baru 6 game.

Davies and Elmander are pain in the ass when comes to air ball, even experienced Vidic having problem coping with those 2 players, how to do you expect Evans which less experienced and less bulky to compete with those 2 players? Davies purpose on the pitch is just to head the ball, nothing more than that, he is sh*t on when he played with his foot. Evans did well IMO, any defender at any day will have problem dealing with Davies and Elmander. Instead blaming Evans alone for the mistake his make, his teammate should do better covering job to the player around Davies or Elmander when contesting air ball.

O'Shea should did better in this game, a lot of times he caught off guard in his position. The 2nd goal we conceded, instead of going to CB position, he should stick on RB and cover the hole there.

We played well but not good enough. 3 points outta 3 away match is poor, not good enough if we wanted to win the title this season. Rio gotta be back, defense is shambolic without him. Poor Rooney, still can't find his footing and form back and I got him in my fantasy team sweat.gif

Horror week for the top team, none of the UCL team won this weekend.

To be honest i think Evans works better with Ferdinand, Rio will always keep him in check..order him to mark here mark there, when attacking corners Rio is the one telling him where to stand and expect to head the ball.

If everytime also "relax la, slack kat diorang yang tak perform" then there will be no improvement.

Evans and O'Shea was poor. I admit though I think it is slightly due to the system we are playing. Last season 5 across midfield, the defence generally have more cover.

Now we playing 4-4-2, it is the best formation currently for us with Berba on form. Unfortunately while this works at home where away team tend to sit deeper in defence, we'll find some problem away. I think this explain that awful away record we having now.

Something like our UCL campaign. We only works well when playing 4-5-1. Unfortunately we are short on midfield now, but hopefully we can see improvement when Anderson, Hargraeves return to fitness (fingers cross)

bolton players are fast on counter attack, which worries me. our backline only evra can run fast, vidic, oshea, evans not so fast.

Not to point fingers but the 2nd goal was a mistake by JOS. Lost the ball clumsily then let Bolton get a fast counter attack, helped by a little unlucky fletcher deflection sweat.gif

*
You must be mistaken Man Utd for Arsenal. We don't play like dung like you said, we did well but not good enough. Everton game is shit, when u conceded 2 goals at dying minutes. We came twice from behind, that is good enough.

Defense is leaking goals, we have the same back line when we break the British record for not conceding goal, its the same set or players apart from Rio is out with injury or watever reason he missed the game for. What I mean by defense is not pin pointing to one player alone, the whole team have to attack and defense as a team.

I believe Fergie is making sure Rio is fully fit before playing him. This is Bolton, master of physical football, not Scunthorpe. And wtf 2 players blocking keeper's view for Bolton's second.
Seriously, if O'Shea do not improve, I rather Rafael playing. Kevin Davies really owns our defender. I think he won most of the header.

Aside from the defensive blunder, the other problem i see with this game - aerial threat

Goddamn I know Bolton is famous for that but I think we should have done better, every cross from outside the box / corner always never reach our players offensively and defensively

WTF why are we leaking so many goals? We're leaking 2 goals per game, this is completely unacceptable -.-

And what's wrong with JOS and Evans having brainfarts all the time? Seriously their performance are piss, piss poor this season. I know it's Bolton and its a tough place to go,but fecking hell we had a huge opportunity to close the gap and we,and by that I mean JOS and Evans, bottled it. Seriously disappointed.

IcyDarling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Blood is on your hands!!!!!! tongue.gif

I don't get why are people blaming Evans, when it was Evra who didn't guard the far post properly for the first goal? I'm not sure where O'Shea disappeared to, for the second goal though.

Anyways, the defence and lapses in concentration is a concern. It's presumably down to the tactics used. No proper holding midfielder in a 4-4-2 is going to leave the defence more exposed to attacking players making runs at them.
