Proper flashes include rom for UK, France, Central Europe and China (If your set comes with build number 2.51, you can only flash to UK for now). The instructions for flashing as followed : 1) Search somewhere along the lines of "RSDLite - download here" 2) Install it. 3) Go to http://and-developers.com/sbf:defy 4) Download the Full Flash rom, the one where the provider is "UK" 5) Unzip that file, you now have a .sbf folder (not file) 6) Put that .sbf folder in C:\Users\Admin\My Documents 7) Shut down phone 8) Hold Power + Volume UP buttons at once for few seconds 9) Phone is now in bootloader mode (screen looks like a command prompt) 10) Release the buttons, and plug USB to computer and phone 11) Open RSD Lite, your phone should be detected as connected (Device name was like "S OMAP 3630" or some BS like that) 12) Click "..." to browse for the .sbf file in C:\Users\Admin\My Documents 13) In RSD Lite, click to highlight your connected DEFY, and then click "Start". The first column beside the connected phone should now have a green icon thing, and the ROM is being flashed. 14) DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PHONE, THE CABLE, OR THE COMPUTER! (I went and took a dump) 15) When the "Status" column in RSD Lite says "Please manually power up this phone", so shut it down and power it again. Note: The status stays in "Checksum Group 37" for a verrrrryyyy long time before saying "Rebooting". I thought it got stuck there, but it ended up ok. 16) Your DEFY is now reflashed to stock with motoblur. 17) You can now close RSD Lite. It will complain saying you will damage the attached device, but I pulled it out wayyyy before this (I unhooked it when it told me to reboot manually) and my DEFY is not dead. You may choose to close RSD Lite before unhooking your DEFY. 18) Post your results in this thread and confirm or reject my procedure. *Quote from xda-developer forum*
P/s : Above instruction is for UK. You can only flash to this rom for now since build 2.51 can't downgrade

If this dont work try this:
Step 1; Turn your android phones USB Debugging OFF. Step 2: Download and launch Superoneclick with Admin rights on your PC. Then Click Root. Step 3: When it says: Waiting for Device, Turn USB Debugging ON Step 4: It’ll now run RATC Step 5: When it says: Starting ADB Server… Step 6: Turn your android phones USB Debugging OFF Step 7: Turn your android phones USB Debugging ON Step 8: Turn your android phones USB Debugging OFF Step 9: All BEFORE it says “Waiting for device…” again Reboot your phone and now it should be rooted
How to unroot?
Get an app call 'z4root' available from market.
There should be an option 'Unroot'. Click it and it will say successfully unroot. However, the superuser permission program is still there and you need to remove it manually. Below steps must be done BEFORE you click unroot in z4root. Otherwise it will not work.
Step 1: Get a paid app call 'Root Explorer' from market (or you can find 'ahem' version if you're a cheap skate like me ) Step 2: navigate to /system/app. Remember to click the R/W to R/O that's located on top right corner of the program. Step 3: Find the apk 'Superuser.apk' and uninstall it. Step 4: Now go to z4root and click unroot. Step 5: Reboot your phone. Now you phone should be unroot and without the superuser app

This is a safe step-by-step to upgrade your phone to froyo 2.2 and still able to downgrade to your current stock rom. This guide assumed that you are running on 2.5.1 based firmware.
Things need to be downloaded beforehand
1. Download USB Driver Motorola HERE 2. Download RSD Lite HERE 3. Download system recovery HERE 4. Download SuperOneclick from previous spoiler 5. Download Froyo_UK_3.4.2-117 (by iaio72-xda-developers) do HERE 6. Download TmobileUS_Boot_Devtree HERE
From Éclair to Froyo
1. Install RSD Lite and USB Driver Motorola 2. Root your Defy with SuperOneClick (guide can be found on previous spoiler) 3. Install System Recovery apk file. Open the app and click Install System Recovery ( place System Recovery apk file in your SD Card) 4. Extract the file Froyo_UK_3.4.2-117 and place the folder in sdcard/goapkrev/backup ( if you cannot find the folder, create one) 5. Click Recovery boot and it should enter clockwork mod recovery 6. Fixed SBF for Downgrade-ability from Undowngrade-ability
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
This is for those that screwed up on their attempt of using nandroid backup to flash to Froyo, and instead used the full flash sbf of Froyo rom which is undowngradeable. Fear not, as this fixed SBF made by me is for the 2.51 SEA stock rom.
Steps to revert back to your stock rom of 2.51 SEA rom provided you've made a nandroid backup of it
1. Assuming you are on any of the Froyo full flash sbf now, do the steps for 'root the phone', and 'install custom recovery' 2. Put your nandroid backup of 2.51 SEA rom in sdcard/goapkrev/backup ( if you cannot find the folder, create one) 3. Get into custom recovery mode, wipe data and factory reset 4. Restore the backup 4. Reboot and wait until the restore completed (It may take a while) 5. Once its done, restart the phone and get into bootloader mode 6. Flash this FIXED SBF using RSD Lite 7. Again, wait for the flashing to complete (I went to take a dump) 8. Reboot for the last time and walla, back to the past
P/S : Nandroid backup for 2.51 SEA rom coming soon

Exactly how tough is this phone?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Motorola Defy has an IP67 certified protection. What does it means you may ask? IP stands for Ingress Protection (not the kungfu guy in IP Man ). The first letter '6' indicate that it is totally protected against dust. The second letter '7' indicate that it is protected against the effect of immersion between 15cm and 1m. Motorola has stated that it can withstand the pressure of being underwater as deep as 1m at a maximum time of 30 minutes. If you curious about what other numbers stands for, feel free to have a look at this website
Apn settings not detected automatically

For those that flashed your firmware to other sbf or custom roms, you may need to add your apn manually. Fortunately, I have made a universal master apns which can detect any telcos all over the world However, you will need to root your device in order to do this.
Step 1 : Download this master-apn HERE Step 2 : Put it in the root of your sdcard. Now install Root Explorer Step 3 : In the Root Explorer navigate to your sdcard and find the apns-conf.xml, copy it Step 4 : Now go to /system/etc. Click R/W to R/O on the top right corner and paste your apns-conf.xml and replace the current one Step 5 : Go to setting - Wireless and networks - Mobile networks - Access point names Step 6 : Click menu button and click Reset to defaults. Wait for it to apply your settings automatically and you are done

Too bad that this phone cant take underwater photos. It doesn't have physical camera shutter button and capacitive touchsreen wont work underwater. But there is a camera app that allows you to make the volume rocker buttons as a shutter button, who knows maybe its possible. Or just use a ziplock bag instead
the office floors are carpeted thats why i can throw it hehe so far no scratches whatsoever yet (knock on wood).
its nice to see the faces of my colleagues when i throw the phone in front of them. later i will drop it into a glass of water and see their reaction LOL
Motorola’s life-proof phone, the Defy, is set to get the Android 2.2 Froyo update sometime in Q2 of 2011. We’ve seen Moto delay updates more than once before, but at least they are giving themselves an ample amount of time to get Froyo out the door.
I didn't know much about android versions but will gingerbread or honeycomb make your phone sandproof, dustproof, impactproof and waterproof?
So true... People so obsessed with new firmware update that they will be like " Yay getting gingerbread update now! *click* *click* Opps dropping my phone *pick it up* Dayyyummmm my plastic cover break! *looking at the screen show a message* "Sorry buddy I can't be dropped even once. Now i'm f***ed up! Thanks so much!!"

Thanks for your interest in DEFY. We hope to bring this to Malaysia, but we don't have any confirmed details so far. We will come back to you when there is more information.
Maybe better to ask maxis guys instead, but I do believe a lot of people will be interested on this phone. Size just nice, quite high end spec and most important, rugged.

Ordered on Sunday but have to give them an authorisation code for the transaction since first time buying. Hong Leong have no idea how to help me out hence the delay.
I gave them ID confirmation instead.
Overall took 2 business day once they post my order.
A recommended UK store.
Amazon UK won't ship the Defy to Malaysia, so once I saw Sanosizo bought it already I just have to ask him.

Heya, how much you bought the Defy include tax and everything in RM?
This post has been edited by lingch: Dec 10 2010, 12:21 PM
RM 1466 without tax, pass through custom without any charge. I bought it with the defy car dock so the price for the handset only should be around RM 1342.
The online shop will help you out if you failed to get it resolved here. Well it is a procedure I already knew since I have bought stuff online while I was in UK.
Should have a niche group of people wanting this, other smart phones will still dominate the market in my opinion.
Added on December 10, 2010, 3:21 pmYeah, lucky to get the price drop but I did not win the contest for the Defy ! not lucky enough.
UK is quite reasonable in their pricing because they do drop down prices very often. DVD movies, games drop down in price in just a month or so and the price drop is significant.
BTW, your android knowledge seems to be good, I too wish to replace motoblur but this is my first android phone.

stock speed running at 800MHz, motorola said it is TI OMAP 3610.
but rsd lite and windows reported the phone having 3630 instead. but judging from the benchmark, it can match the droid x on the same 1ghz speed even tho its running on android 2.1, so I prefer to call it 3630 instead.
to change the home launcher, just go to the android market and download launcher pro. once its installed, just press the home button then select launcher pro from the list. you should feel the difference in menu response after that but you'll lose all the widgets that u have with motoblur. some of it u can add back within launcher pro but some u cant.

if we look at the spec sheet for omap 3610 from TI, there is no powervr sgx gpu inside 3610. i dont know if motorola managed to custom built the chip and added the gpu inside, is that even possible?
no need to root to use launcher pro. just remember to turn off Data Saver in Data Manager to be able to download stuff from the adroid market.
if you look at the benchmark screenshot that I posted, you can imagine how it will perform once it has froyo running. my guess is it will outperform even the mighty nexus one

Motorola’s Defy was to be the first “life-proofed” Android handset. Having taken a spin of it for ourself to test their claims and seeing countless crazy videos displaying the toughness of this thing, we believed them. But no one ever said anything about it breaking due to problems with engineering. Loads of users – after having extensively used the device for weeks since its launch – have experienced a horrible issue with their phones: the earpiece doesn’t work. It makes the phone practically useless if you actually want to talk on it and not use headphones, a headset, or the speaker phone. Those familiar with the device say it’s because the headphone jack is so close to the earpiece. Repeated use of the jack may either contribute to a shortening of the component’s circuitry or it may be dislodging the entire thing from the circuit board altogether. There’s no way to tell unless one of these brave souls open their devices, but we hear that’s about as hard to do as getting Motorola to release Android 2.1 for some of their more “uninspiring” devices. (Hehe.) But they’re aware of the issue and are investigating it, thankfully. If you’ve fallen victim to these issues, I’m sure Motorola will have no problem fixing or replacing your device. And should they give you any crap, here’s a nice link to a support forum you can give them to prove it’s their issue and not a fault of your own
moto service center will support defy soon. If anything happen to my set I will push the service people to fix my defy. I will print pages and pages of complaint from the web as a proof
i believe it only occurred to some batches, bad news is there are people who bought this phone from clove experienced the problem. this is my 3rd week using it, and i use the earphone everyday to work. but i already planned to buy a stereo bluetooth earphone anyway.
How did you found out people who bought it from Clove suffer from the speaker problem? mind sharing?
I am not a lucky guy but not so bad luck either, good luck to both of our Defy I guess.
Yesterday my speaker sounded a little weird, maybe it was too loud so I turn the volume down and so far it is still fine after a few time testing it. Hope nothing happens. So far have not been using the audio jack, used once only, having too much fun learning the android OS and playing Angry Birds !
I am also pondering the idea of a bluetooth headphone, but with so much wireless wave around us and close to the ears I am not sure if it is a good idea for the long run, maybe don't use it too often.
But then again, if using the audio jack do create this problem a bluetooth headset is a great idea, and we can avoid the hassle of closing and opening the plastic flap all the time.
If the problem do arise and Motorola Malaysia does cover the repair for Defy bought outside of Malaysia it will be great news. If not I will just send back to Clove and claim warranty.

currently the support manager in motorola support forum is getting some information from all defy owners around the world and there are a few who bought from clove uk. im not sure if its a hardware or software issues because there are cases that the audio jack has never been used before but still experienced the speaker issue. im waiting for motorola to come out with an official statement about this.
Quite worrying considering we do not know whether our phones are plagued by this problem or not and any day it could happen or it may not.
I browsed through the forum again and yes I saw one guy who bought from Clove got the issue.
Well I should not have brought this matter up, now we all have to worry.

jiangchen: sbf is the firmware flash file that consist of all the software required for the phone to run. if your phone is not working or cant be turn on, by reinstalling back this file will revive back the phone as long as there is no issue with phone hardware. its like reformatting and reinstalling your windows machine.
Seems weird Malaysia's Defy no Motoblur. I have tried launcher pro but the plus version have to pay. Have to set up a Paypal account and get my house's wifi running first.
yes it will void the warranty. but u cannot remove motoblur stuff because they are interconnected to each other, it might actually break some important apps in the phone.
defy is equipped with 2gb of internal storage so there is no need to remove any motoblur stuff, and it is quite snappy as well. but without motoblur (if we can flash our phone to AP sbf) we can free more memory thus increase the responsiveness of the phone when it is running many apps in the background.
so far, even without root u can do a lot of things with it. any other reason to root other than removing bloated apps?
Is your phone still considered under warranty then?
Actually I want to terminate some service that runs in the background like news, weather, feed and all that. I have close their app but they seem to be running in the background each time I restart my phone.
And 3G and so on will kinda immediately download some data if I enable them.
So far I have disable all mobile data, I just want to make sure next time if I do enable some form of GPRS and so on they won't download data without me knowing.

Fren my wildfire I did not use any task killer and it does not lag a lot... Further more lesser memory also, I still keep ky phone unroot and it works fine... so to root it or not it depends on individual.... don get the idea must root... root it u can do more things like set CPU speed, install some back up apps which is very useful sometime... and some others custimization stuff too...
Phone is still under warranty, if there is a need to send for claim, we can unroot it back. If you have deleted some of the blur apps for example, you can flash it back & return it to factory settings.
Deleting system apps is not recommended, I would advise to wait for the asia pacific sbf to be available first, which comes without motoblur.

quite expensive considering you still tied to a contract. for 24 months it should have been free.
kodak perfect touch software is just for picture enhancement, not much settings can be done, or its just that i havent explore everything in the phone yet.
I am using the trial right now, not bad, just that the suggested route seems weird once in a while, like there is a fly over built mainly for the road below to ease traffic but the Papago will direct you to the road below instead.

Same here... I'm currently tied with iphone plan which will last till March 2011... and i'm interested to get the HD7.. but Maxis doesn't allow me to extend my contract... reason given is because both are different package... the only way to get the HD7, i have to terminate the iphone plan which i will need to pay for the penalty and admin charge...
if u buy the hd7, u will be tied to another contract, when the time comes there will be a better phone and u wanna upgrade again. and the cycle continues...

haha... true also.... that's why i cancelled my initial plan... i just wanna try out the new os from ms....
but they don allow me to extend my contract and get this... poor me... still have 8 months to run... but i'm allowed to extend my contract with iphone... so in dilemma... stick with my wildfire and wait for LG dual core or jump ship...
I suggest you wait. besides, iphone 5 is coming out soon.. leaking should start appearing next few months...
actually, if not urgent, better wait la.. maybe some new phone will come out soon le?? if still can wait, then wait lo if really cannot tahan liao then only change lo..
now getting a different message when checking system updates, looks like the update server for defy has been up. hopefully there is an update in the near future.

really?sorry bro to hear that hope clove or moto will replace it in short period
Sanosizo, bad news indeed. I am eager to know what will Clove do as well. How long has it been ? 3 weeks? Mine is currently 2 weeks old and I test it everyday. I guess it will happen soon to.

Nop.. so far have to send back to US 1st. But can register warranty within malaysia now. Until Malaysia launched it Streak then we can claim locally..
already got a reply from Clove. they asked me to contact the local authorized service center first. i sent them another question regarding the warranty. currently waiting for them to answer that.
Added on December 21, 2010, 1:29 pmaccording to motorola website, yes the phone is under warranty. but under the malaysia terms n conditions, only phones bought within malaysia can use the warranty.

Yeah it is cheaper to repair here, and of course only the tiny earpiece need to be replaced but who knows how much moto service center will charge for that little thing... I didn't have time to visit them yet.
I also did try it with the keys, no problem, I even stab it with a pen no problem.
But today when I remove the battery from the phone and the phone was face down on my table. Apparently some small dust speck, a bit like one or two sand like speck was on the table. While removing the battery I heard some scratching sound and to my surprise the screen was scratched !
Try some sand, or ceramic stuff, maybe it will scratch, since all of us only use metal to try the screen out.
This post has been edited by jiangchen: Dec 22 2010, 04:24 PM
use key of course no problem, it will scratch if u have dirt or small bit of sand trapped between the screen and something that can press the particle deep into the screen protective layer...

If you have the website I sent you, I won't be going so extreme as I can actually live with the scratches, mine is a lot more minor than his, I will just try some minor stuff to see if it works, if it does not I will live with it.
BTW check to see whether the solution I just posted works or not.

be careful or u might end up with more scratches... or better yet, just leave it as it is

Motorola Europe Hi all, Motorola is aware of a small number of DEFY users who have experienced lost audio through the phone ear-piece speaker. We have identified the source of this issue and have resolved the issue in production. Any consumer who experiences this problem should contact a Motorola customer support centre - here are our contact details.

both...hehehe my phone already here on sunday but till tuesday they not yet send it n on the afternoon i got msg from DHL to contact them to give proper address... lucky that time i'm not working,so i ask where the thing is n i want to take it by myself
I did that while I was in UK, took a bus all the way to their cargo to pick up a camera lens.
This time around I ask them to send to my office. They are better when sending to office, if to house or apartment most courier will fail or are lazy to deliver.
For goggle map you need to use brut mod. Uninstall original google map apk in system folder using root explorer. Reboot the phone then uninstall the app in applications. Then can only install brut mod hehe
u need to download the marketaccess or marketenabler app, fake your telco provider to t-mobile usa then open the market again. this time you will see google maps in the list
u guys bought malaysia set without motoblur is it?
btw, defy can now use clockwork recovery and nandroid backup. we now have motoblur and non-motoblur service flash so if u like or dont like motoblur u can change anytime u like by flashing those sbf.
Someone in XDA forum actually said that some of the Blur stuff is still there somehow, but less so compare to our UK sbf.

yup, i was talking about the central europe version and i'm currently on it. yes it has some of the blur stuff but most of the resource wasters are gone.
unfortunately 2.51 is the latest and moto has put something in it that make all current root method unsuccessful and u cannot flash to other firmware lower than that so u have to stay on it at the moment. good news is, the work on rooting 2.51 already in progress by the hackers. btw, i'm currently on 2.34.
there is one time my phone speaker out of sound .. even i adjust the volume to max. this happened on day 3 i got it.
but then i notice this happened after i use the kill task a few times continuese, so i restart my phone and it become normal until today ( day 5 )
for my case, i didn't set any auto kill task during phone start up. i suspect the kill task action might cause some software issue.
just for information sharing
now.. really happy with my phone. with RM player, map navigator, documents viewer, live wallpaper, name card scanner ... still looking more good stuff for it
The phone is great, it is a shame it is plagued by the earpiece issue. I think Defy bought next year(if you can be sure it was manufactured during January) should be safe.
If you buy now the chance of getting the earpiece problem is high if you bought it elsewhere (UK or Europe), not sure about the Malaysia or Asia version though.
Mine is two weeks old and I fear the earpiece problem will happen to my Defy, I hope Motorola Malaysia will soon be able to fix the Defy here.

happen only for 1st batch of europe set... malaysia set wont have this problem i think... but better wait review from other people that have bought it if u afraid about it
Earphone defect proof? But i read forums saying that the europe batch is affected a lot. US has less of such problems. Are our batch similar to that of the US?
How come Motorola selling DEFY at RM1599 in Malaysia while Singapore is selling at SGD528? It's like only RM1257 at current exchange rate of SGD1=MYR2.38. That's a RM300 premium on the same stuff.
Wonder should I get it from Singapore or here? Problem is, got problem, can claim it in Motorola Malaysia?

actually, if u really wan singapore set i also can bring for u at RM1250 ~
hmmmmm the defy camp is abit lonely, not many users yet. Any ideas where to get some accessories like screen protector, casing, etc? my fingerprint is all over the screen =(
the earpiece issue normally occured between 2-4 weeks but thats what happened to early batch of uk sets and i'm one of the unfortunate owners
i believe singapore & malaysia sets are newer batches so the problem may have been solved but like i said, to be on the safe side, wait for a month first.
seems like u took the same route as me, but from e398 i go from e2 to e6 then a1200.
defy is a great phone, the size is just nice for the palm, not too bulky and quite light. its just that damn earpiece issue that can drag it down. anyway, i probably have to pay rm60 for the earpiece repair

you're using the defy now? Isnt the earpiece covered by warranty?
i miss my E2 weyh, can play GBA games nicely with the extra side buttons now the battery is dead
me from e398 - ZN5 then Defy. Not much change like u guys
I think my set shd be new set coz the firmware quite new and can't be root at this moment. But so far okay for all the features and apps that i found (^^)y
i asked the motorola service center. rm60 is normally for speaker repair, so i hope the cost for smaller earpiece repair is lower. unfortunately my set came from uk
jiang, i hope yours is a newer batch of phone so no worries. yes the moto service center now can repair it but they need to check the phone first. i havent send the phone yet because i just got back from vacation and need some time to do backup as well.
brightstar @ local original set will be covered by warranty if anything happens.
@Sanosizo, yesterday when calling my dad suddenly I can't hear him clearly, freaks me out. I turned on the speakerphone and it is the same so in the end it is my Dad's side that has the problem.
Thanks for the info though about Moto able to fix the phone now.
Not sure whether it is a newer batch or not, maybe after they sold the first batch then the second batch they do the price drop, if it is so I hope the second batch does not have the earpiece problem.

looks like better to wait until after CNY before buy la...and hopefully that time got enough Ang Pow money to cover the phone cost
been looking for an Android phone that is not too big (SGS, DHD too big) and this one certainly fits the bill. screen big enough, but not too big, and specs is not bad. i dont need top of the line
Anyone here use any other charger besides the Ori unit? i intend to have another unit put in the office to charge my phone. the problem is those 3rd party are either rated at 500/550mA (which will not charge the phone) or 1A (which will charge the phone for awhile before my defy keep on beeping, i think it is overvoltage perhaps?)
mine already swim with some fishes, happily sitting in the pocket during heavy rain and fell from 1 meter high for few times. oh and it has been in few glasses of water too.

1. is the speaker ring loud and clear? <useful for alarm especially> -- very loud indeed. clear? clear enough for me, alarm always wake me up, but sometimes i wake up earlier than the alarm.
2. issit fast for the GPS to lock signal from satellites? -- must be under clear sky then it will lock quite fast
3. is the screen responsive enough especially for fast-typing sms -- very responsive as other moto android phones. with multitouch keyboard fast typing is quite good and accurate. or u can swype the words.
4. is the screen viewable under hot sunlight -- currently im using the lowest brightness, under hot sun screen barely viewable, need to crank the brightness up. not an issue.
5. the camera, in scale of 5 (1 very poor, 3 moderate, 5 very nice for a phone), which one u will give. -- i give 3 only. it focus and snap very fast but image quality is so so only. picture can be enhance with kodak photo touch built in.
i have this weird problem, i created some folders on the home screen to organize some icons. i renamed the folder accordingly. however after turning off the phone and on back, whatever that i renamed will revert back to "folder"

Hey guys, i'm currently loaning my friend's defy just to test it out before i buy it
the multitouch keyboard is super awesome and the predictive text is damn accurate man!
I noticed something though, i can't seem to find a lanyard hole anywhere on the phone
nice to hear that the keyboard is nice. because the girl that i'll be giving the defy to never use touchscreen device before.. kinda worry that she will have a hard time typing sms..
and i dont think u need lanyard on a phone that doesnt mind to be dropped. no?

One more thing i like the video very much, not HD but smooth & clear[/B][ thanks a lot in advance!!

Yeap the keyboard is nice. The 3.7" screen size is just nice for landscape qwerty keyboard. In portrait format i'd prefer to use swype though. So much more convenient to type 1 hand with Swype xD
and usually i connect some lanyard accessory to make pulling the phone out of my jeans easier

Not getting froyo now is not a problem for me actually since I am new to android.
i dun cant think a reason why a new user of android doesnt need a froyo
QUOTE(Nightstalker1993 @ Jan 6 2011, 08:45 PM)

that's what happens to samsung galaxy S last time. full of promises. then keep on delay.. suddenly tadaa, new phone is announced and it's gonna be sentenced to death
on the contact there, you can filter by facebook which is not available in malaysia version and the contact list if swipe to the right can see the status update in social network but in malaysia version can only c contact history.
Like what Sanosizo has said, the screen can be scratched and my defy is a good example.
The stabbing youtube video is impressive, I personally have tried it already. The thing is it gives you a false idea of it being invincible while a few speck of sand will scratch it deep if ample force is applied intentionally or unintentional.
Maybe try stabbing it with a ceramic blade and see if it scratches since mostly people use metal or steel stuff to do the test.
QUOTE(Nightstalker1993 @ Jan 7 2011, 10:23 AM)
Screen protector? Why'd you need that for? I tried stabbing and scratching the screen with a key, no problemo
Hi, I am very interested in Defy and the thing stopping me to buy immediately is the ear piece issue that I read about on Internet. Anyone here have that issue yet? Someone advice to wait for 1 month first. My current phone have similar issue so I don't want to change to a phone that may have ear piece issue.
Besides that, any of you guys benchmark your Defy with Quadrant?
Sanosizo, that is a good example that you have found there !
Anyway, have you fix your phone?
@Willbeth, you should probably ask Sanosizo, I think he benchmark it with the Quadrant already and his Defy sadly is affected by the earpiece issue, UK set though.
defy has the same cpu as droid x but underclocked to run at 800mhz. if i set the speed back to 1ghz, the result will be almost identical to droid x performance.
Yeah, I use Z4root 1.3 to root. Very easy and Z4root gives you the option to temporary or permanently root your phone. Even if you choose permanent root they still provide you the option to unroot.

I would like to know the benchmark for Defy out of the box? From XDA, it seems like there's some discussion going on what CPU it is using. Maybe the newer gen will be getting as stated CPU, where the current users there, they suspect theirs of higher end. A user from CN is getting much lower results than some base Defy user.
So wondering that is the benchmark for the default Defy out of the box for Maxis.
hmmm today my fren told me, if use tethering or accessing broadband with device other than that of the phone, i.e sharing it or using it with a laptop might be subjected to additional charges outside of the data plan subscribed. he said last time he checked maxis got charged one.
i m on celcom, i just checked and they say no charge =) yeah
by the way, found that HTC charger can charge defy without any problem =)
Just overclocked my defy. Now running at 1ghz 56vsel. Don't dare to go higher. Version 2.34 and overclock defy is very good right now, everything is fast and snappy.
Cool thing about wifi tethering is your phone acts like a wifi access point where up to 5 wifi capable devices can use the internet coming from your phone. And you can still make and receive call at the same time.
It is safe to run the phone at 1ghz because that's the original speed. But to save some battery power, I keep it running at 800 and slow it down to 300 when the screen is off.
I took some videos with Defy but can't access them. Can't view the videos from the "file manager on PC" but they are in the phone's gallery.
Another problem I have is my address book is showing all my Gmail contacts. I tried to put some of them in a different folder but it doesn't work. Did you guys import your SIM or something?
go download Motorola USB Driver v4.8.0 for Windows and install, then hook up your defy to pc once installed, let it run it will install all the driver. then go to:
it will show as MB525 in windows, the video is in:
Sanosizo, what app are you using to set the speed when your screen is off?

Hi Greenday,
The driver that you say we have to install to access video file, is it this one?
i noticed that without installing the driver, just plug the phone to the pc thru the usb cable, you can transfer file just fine but the phone will not charge thru the usb connection, after installing the driver the phone will charge and transfer file =)
Not so good news to those who intend to root the malaysian set which comes with build number JRDNEM_U3_2.51.0

Greenday, my phone does charge via USB. I can see my photos using the File Manage window on PC but I cannot see my videos.
The built-in GPS is also highly inaccurate. I took photos of the places and they are tagged with GPS co-ordinates. I checked on the PC but they are all in the wrong spots!
Also, I check my open apps through Advance Task Killer, and many apps like YouTube, MySpace, Voice Dialer, etc. automatically open, how come?
The default browser, I cannot organise bookmarks into folders.
I hope you can help me. I still have so many questions!!
This post has been edited by cybergal: Jan 9 2011, 10:19 PM
Not sure about the picture with GPS tagging but GPS is quite accurate everytime I use it. You need to make sure there is a GPS lock on first though.
The GPS icon must not be flashing when you take the picture.
All those apps are open in the background. Unless you delete the app(need root) or configure the task killer to close them each time you turn off your screen.
I think you can try to get different browser for a change, opera, firefox and quite a few have mobile browser.
u install the driver first, then go to: MB525 => Removable storage => DCIM => camera (the video should be there) mine is
the open apps maybe due to widgets u place on your homescreen, or maybe they are autorun during startup in the background, you can disable it with Startup cleaner pro, you can get it free in the market
the default browser does not have folders function to organize bookmark if i am not mistaken. get dolphin browser HD from market it is free and have folder function for bookmark
By default all programs are loaded into the memory every time after the phone starts, this is standard in all android phones, making sure that the programs are ready to be run instantly when we hit the program icons. Android has its own memory manager but if somehow you wanna free more memory for let say a 3d game, then the third party task manager will be needed.
