Hi All, I just received my Samsung BD-C5500 blu-ray player from forum seller commomtan today. As far as I know, this is one of the cheapest entry level BD player at RM399, the other being the Philips BDP3100. So far it plays all the DVD, BD and CD that I have tested and I must say it is very good value for money. For those of you looking for a budget BD player, this is highly recommended. If you are looking for a DVD player with HDMI output to play your DVD collection on your HDTV, it is better to get this BD player since it cost just RM100 more than those branded DVD players with HDMI output at RM299 (like Sony, LG, Pioneer, Toshiba, etc.) and you can move up to BD later.
Anyway, there may be other issues so the purpose of this thread is for owners to share their experience, solutions and tips for this BD player so owners can get the most out of it.
For starters, here are two physical differences that I know for those considering either the Samsung BD-C5500 or the Philips BDP3100 to use with your old AVR without HDMI inputs. The Samsung has only optical digital output while the Philips has only coaxial digital output. The Philips remote does not have the eject (tray open/close) button while the Samsung has, if this is important for you.
Hope other owners will share their experience here.

Just want to check with other owners of the Samsung BD-C5500. Does the display on the unit goes off after a few seconds and only shows whenever the Info button is pressed? Not sure if this is the normal working or my set is faulty.
I was able to use the BD player remote to control my Toshiba 32AV700E LCD TV by setting the code 47 with the TV buttons. All the buttons worked except the Source button. Do other owners (with Toshiba LCD TVs) have the same results?

Got my BD-C5500 yesterday and connected to my 42ZV600E - still experimenting with it.

Re display going off after a few seconds, you have set the Energy Saving setting to ON (Settings-General-Energy Saving), set it to OFF and the display will be on permanently.

I can't get the BD player remote to control the ZV, can you please give more details on the code 47.

Thanks, I missed that; the display is showing now. To set the remote to control your TV, refer to page 19 of the user manual. For Toshiba, you have to try the codes 47 to 52 to see which one works while pressing the TV POWER button down. Mine works with the code 47.

You mean using the Samsung BD player remote to control the LG TV? If yes, turn on the TV, point the remote at the TV and press and hold the TV POWER button on the remote. Press the following two-digit codes on the remote - 19, 20, 21, 22 or 78. The correct code will turn off the TV.

Sorry, bro, cannot help you on this one as I don't have any mkv files to test; it will be easier to use a HD Media Player for this pupose. I mainly use my 5500 for playing BD, DVD and music CD; seldom use the USB port.
BTW, since I have just got a true HD AVR (the Denon 1610) I was able to test the Samsung C5500 with the Denon and it outputs true HD when you set the Digital Output to Bitstream (Audiophile) on the Samsung. There is no compatibility issue using the HDMI connection.

how to use the internet@tv? should i slot in the usb wifi adapter?can the player detect the driver for particular adapter and after that using it as usual???

I believe you have to get the Samsung wi-fi adaptor and it is proprietary so I am doubtful if any other adaptor can work. You can try using other adaptor if you have one, no harm doing it. The best alternative is to get a LAN (ethernet) cable and physically connect the BD-C5500 to your modem LAN port to access the internet. I will try this when I find the time. Do share with us here your experience using the internet@tv with the C5500.

Yesterday i setup use the LAN connection. i unable get connect to internet have error message "The HTTP port is disabled Please check if the HTTP port is blocked by something like the internal firewall program" for the information i dont use firewall. i attached the print screen

MY setup is the Modem in the room, Dlink router modem is connect to Dlink switch from the switch is connect to PC and Aztech Homeplug i have another Aztech homeplug in living room this homeplug is have wireless and wired, the wired connect to BD player, I test the wifi and cable connection is working fine use pc able go to internet when use BD player have error msg.

I just tried the internet connection on the C5500 to access the Internet@TV function. Since I do not have the Samsung wifi adaptor I use a normal LAN cable to connect to my modem running Streamix. It went very smoothly and I was able to connect to the net without any problems. I followed the user manual, left everything at AUTO and it went exactly according to the book. I will post more on this later.

• MKV working fine, tested on 720P - Life documentary & some Pixar short film. (no idea on subtitle)
• You can cross-link for internet access, instruction given on above link. (If you don't have any wired router access)
• USB port is working for storing BD-Live content, (manual said only work for flash drive not the hard disk). You need to manual configure it at settings as it is not automatic use flash drive for BD-Live content.
• Internet@TV is required internet access (either from the optional WiFi Adapter or LAN connection). Currently you can get Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Google Map, USA Today, History Channel, AccuWeather, Picasa, Getty Images & some games in Malaysia. No support & available on ROVI, Blockbuster, Netflix, Vudu & Pandora locally.

Here's a screen shot of how the InternetTV looks after update is completed for the free applications for Malaysia. All of them work but inputing text using the remote is not so convenient e.g. in searching YouTube.



The AccuWeather gives a 6-day weather forecast and KL is shown by default. Google maps is already centred on Malaysia and you can zoom in to maps at street level. History Channel is just "today in history" text. Good for fun but more practical to surf on your PC.

I read in another thread that BD player cannot play VCD except for OPPO. Out of curiosity, I popped an old VCD into the Samsung 5500 and surprise, surprise, it played. However, you cannot access the menu (no PBC on function) but it can play but at wide screen and not at the correct 4:3 ratio. VCD is not listed in the manual for list of playable discs. Not sure if other BD players can also play VCD or just the Samsung though without the full functions. But I think playing VCD in a BD player is an overkill, better just use your old DVD player and preserve your BD player for BD or DVD (for the upscaling).

Just got my unit yesterday. Compare to what you guys paid for, it cost a little bit more here in Sabah, but still the cheapest in town. The reason why I bought it was because I saw the mkv thing on the box. Everything works smooth, you can stream your mkv files to the player via LAN connection, no worries. Except there will be no subtitle.

Thanks. Been throwing in some blu ray movies to try out the unit, what I noticed is that the picture quality is much better than my fat PS3. I read some reviews saying that the start up time is a bit slow but mine always play the movie within few seconds. So, yea, I'm happy with it.

I find the loading time of BD is generally longer than when loading DVD on my BD-C5500. I think this is common for all BD players, not only on the sammy. Some BD loads faster than others and some seems to take ages before you see the menu. I suppose this depends on individual discs and how the menu is designed and structured. I read that the C5500 is among the fastest to load for entry level BD players and certainly at this price, one cannot really complain. Cannot verify this since I do not have another BD player to compare so those experienced with other brands of BD player may want to comment on this. Anyway, I am also very happy with the sammy so far. The user interface is user-friendly and the manual is also pretty clear and well-written.

This is worrying. The ps3 is one of the most neutral and void of any processing. If u r really seeing a difference its is likely that some processing is going on.If I get the chance I will comment if I can test one.

The 1st blu-ray movie I dropped in the PS3 was an original Die Hard 4. However, the picture was quite grainy. Both me and my friend thought that probably either the disc or the tv was giving the problem. However, when I tried it on the C5500, the picture was silky smooth. Perhaps my PS3 is faulty? Well, doesn't matter now as it's sitting in my office serving games only. No more blu-ray movies from it.

Nothing to do, so go try out a VCD in this player.

haha... no issue... can playback VCD also.

can select left or right for different language also, no issue at all.

So not only OPPO did, Samsung also can playback VCD without any issue.

It can playback:

Original / Pirated / Burn of VCD, DVD and BD.

I dunno the difference....sorry can't help..but i already bought C5500 and so far ok lorrrr

I don't own Philip BD3100, but one of the shop here using it.

What I notice is:
- Philip BDP3100 loading speed is quite slow compare with Samsung BD-C5500.
- Philip BDP3100 having better frame skipping on troublesome disc (off course those pirated) than Samsung BD-C5500.

From tech wise: **
- Not support on MKV and DivX HD for Philip BDP3100.
- No WiFi and no WiFi adapter support for Philip BDP3100.
- Not support any Internet entertainment (example youtube and etc) for Philip BDP3100

**Above is the reason I choose Samsung BD-C5500.

From net review:
- DVD upscaling is not good. (I find Samsung one upscaling DVD perfectly).\

Eh... I know it can play up to 1080P MKV. (I don't own 1073dd player, so can't compare). But the quality output is stunning enough for me.

I did try few 720P MKV (6 channel AC3 audio), no issue so far, playing smoothly.

Not tested with subtitle.


It came with HDMI cable (not sure what version, never mention, I do notice my v1.3 separate purchase cable seems slightly better where it no wording slightly washout in red background issue).

is there any chance to get this player in electrical shops for RM399 ? a shop in ipoh quot me rm600 for this player.

If you are in KL, I believe you can get it in Desa Home Theatre for this price. Or maybe in Legend SS2/Paramount Gardens in PJ. I got mine online from seller commomtan in this forum.

hi all,

anyone having problem streaming movies from Samsung Allshare? I am getting server disconnect after a few minutes of streaming. Then, I will not be able to connect/detect the server until i restart the player or the pc server.

this is how i connect the player to the Allshare
player > router (wired) > pc (wireless)

note : i have no issue connecting to internet although i can't detect the allshare server.

btw, any other software that can do streaming to the player besides the Samsung Allshare?

Think I need to reply in reverse order. Based on what I know,
3. You must use the Samsung wifi adaptor or dongle that is proprietary; quite expensive I think, that's how they make money.
2. You can only access certain specific web-sites designated by Samsung in the built-in software. If you can surf and browse like normal (for RM399), it would put many PC and laptop sellers out of business.

I need 2 confirm bfore buy...

As far as I know, you'll only get stereo from the RCA (red and white) audio out and this is true of any player, not just the BD-C5500. To get DTS audio, you must use either the HDMI or the digital optical out. There is no digital coaxial out on the BD-C5500, only the digital optical out.

Can it play m2ts movie files from the BDMV folder?

correct, RCA output = stereo, it's not restricted to c5500 but to all dvd/bluray players.

just curious, since this player doesn't have built in amplifier, do you guys owner of of c5500 connect to any speakers? or just the LCD..

It depends on what digital audio input ports your HTIB has. The C5500 has only optical digital audio out so you need a HTIB with optical digital audio input port to enjoy 5.1 audio. Otherwise, you'll get only stereo using the RCA red-white cable.

But the whole point of using BD is to enjoy the HD audio (apart from the HD video) so you should have an AVR to do justice to the HD audio. You'll just get stereo from the LCD TV.

i hv another few more questions, hope any1 can kindly answer me.

1. Can I play MKV file that is burn into a DVD-R?

2. Can I use a Power Line Home Plug or Wireless Access Point to connect to the LAN port and stream movies, audio from there?

3. If i were to plug in an ethernet LAN cable, can I stream and play RMVB file from there since the player itself does not support RMVB file format.

4. Is there any limitation of capacity for an External HDD to be connected to?
Like 1TB, 2TB is the max or anything lower capacity.

5. Can I use a USB hub (powered or non-powered) to connect several USB flash drive or External HDD then select which to play from any of the USB flash drive or External HDD there?

6. I only see previous thread mentioned that it supports 2.5inch External HDD, but I guess a 3.5inch HDD also works right?

Hehe...I also just got this player. Now hunting for blu rays. Already connect to my grin but using audio cable. Will source for optical cable soon.

Why you need to turning off DVD 1080p upscale? It is benefit and enhanced for DVD playback in HDTV.

if your Yamaha accept audio over HDMI then no problem. because some only allow video but not audio. it depends.
else juz use Optical cable for surround.

Ya. Ahem is RM 25 per BD, some shop do sell buy 5 = RM 100, but Ahem is 25GB not 50GB, quality still not bad, just some longest movie you may find some color render issue or fading issue. (and depends on vendor also, some is badly did even the subtitle is not follow sequence, example you choose English but they give you Chinese subtitle, once you get a nice vendor, you will happy with it)

* Those RM 10 - RM 12 is not BD, those is DVD9 only even the case label with BD.
* Now in market got few damn nice steelbook case which sold RM 20 also not a BD but DVD9 only.

** You can always take out the disc and differentiate on it, the texture surface in BD is different compare with DVD.

*** I am not that rich, sorry I can't get all Ori. Some movie I won't take Ori one, only those my favor to be collection will be in Ori.

Once you see BD, you won't enjoy DVD anymore, beside clarity, most BD title is remastered better. (Not all title, but most).

PS3 I no idea, never in my mind. I not play TV games one only play PC games.

Welcome, Ya me also, now I feel regret buying those ori DVD, especially that LOTR Extended (that time I buy RM 499 - I get it on 1st hand when release).

After I seen Ahem BD of LOTR already damn clear (at least better a lot than DVD lo), wow! I not getting ori as I want extended, hope and when extended BD release, I will buy ori. hehe.


** But anyway for collection, I still highly recommended on Ori. They is still differences between it.

Added on December 5, 2010, 1:17 pmRM 5 DVD is DVD5 which is around 4.3GB only and most source from internet or cinema record, sometimes is from screener (those sample copy for internal use) copy.

those BD label but actual DVD9 is 7.4GB and mostly re-encoded from ori BD, some title is just actual DVD9 copy over.

My comments is that there are also different grades of ahem BD out there (not just the DVD9 copied from BD but the 25G discs) but it is always better to go for the Ori especially those on offer in Amazon or other online source where it costs a bit more but you get the full works, more so if you like the extras stuff that are provided.

bro jeehouhee, the Samsung BD player only cost RM399 compare to a branded HDMI DVD player that cost RM299 so you should invest in one. The BD player can also upscale your DVD. What more you have a Yamaha AVR, so you should enjoy the HD Audio that comes with BD. With the cost of Ori BD approaching that of Ori DVD, one should switch to BD especially if you have a HDTV; otherwise you are not doing justice to the HDTV.

Not sure whether the default is set to upscale or not. But if you go to Setting > Display > Resolution, set to Auto (if not already that) and the Samsung will automatically output the highest resolution that your TV can support. I suppose at Auto it will upscale to suit the TV.

DVD9 can't even fit in a typical ~15GB 1080p dts MKV. so don't expect too much on quality.

Thks for advise. But Ori Bluray i so expensive for me as i still got alot things need to change. Example : Buy new Plasma or LED (as now i using Sammy LED monitor only) / Velodyne Subwoofer and Bluray Player too ).

Take it slowly to upgrade.

velodyne sub pairing with monitor seems like over kill leh...

You are very right to go for HDTV first before the subwoofer; then get BD player after TV. Can upgrade one by one and not all at once. I think not allow to discuss ahem BD in the forum so can PM me if you wan to know more and not get cheated by what is in the market. The best is to get Ori BD but I can understand the budget issue, so can buy those on offer first and build up your collection slowly.

I got it for rm400. I saw some shops sell 'ahem' BD around rm33. Its the real BD and the quality was really good. even dvd player cant play it.

In fact those "ahem" BD are actually BD-R, 25G or 50G, ripped from Ori BD. Even we can duplicate those BD as long as we have BD writter, 25G blank BD-R nowadays can get below RM10/pc, 50G is around RM30/pc. So if u r buying "ahem" BD for around RM30, definitely is 25G, they might have compressed it into 25G even ori is 50G, cuz you won't get to know whether it's 25G or 50G unless using BD drive. If u r buying for RM10-RM12, for damn sure it's DVD9.

I don't see any ahem 50GB yet. As I know you can know it by see thru the disc surface where in the center circle they will be two label which means 50GB.


I think we all shall back to topic now, this thread is not about ahem. It is for Samsung BD-C5500 player.
