Anyone know the procedure of applying for a personal banking account at UK ? Which bank is recommended ? Im going next week in Uni of Wolverhampton . Thanks

Correct me if I am wrong.

More stringent than opening an Malaysian bank account. They are very concerned about money laundering so will require more document and chief amongst them will your university letter confirming you are their student.

I find it quite easy to open a bank account if you have the correct documents. The most important thing is the letter from the uni confirming that you are their student, and you will need to bring your passport. Does the uni's website mention any additional documents that you will need to have?

Actually, the British banks with branches here should ideally be equally strict (HSBC, Standard Chartered etc). If they aren't, it's a real lack of oversight. Their rules are strict but they work, just like Singapore's.

Added on January 8, 2011, 2:26 amI would like to check with you all. I have came across people saying in order to apply for student visa got to show them the financial capability for at least 28 days right? So, for instance, the FD account is between the father & son, it got to need the birth certificate to prove this?

And, do we need to translate the birth cert to English during the Visa application?

Please advice. Thanks!

yes and yes, birth certificate is require and must be translated. wink.gif
While applying for British visa, the form require u to write in an estimate total amount which consist of full tuition fees and all living cost. Ur financial statement should be able to cover everything, and best to be over the estimated amount. I had a friend who got rejected due to the lack of RM400.

Visa application opens 3months before your course commence date.

Thank you very much for your kind reply. Appreciate it.
I will get my birth certificate to be translated before going applying the student visa.
For the total amount, I'm still calculating & the living cost for London is pretty hard to be estimated.
I'm sorry, cover everything as in cover tuition fees and living cost right. My question is living cost for the whole period while I'm studying there or only for certain months only?
doh.gif These British are really funny, RM400 is like GBP80+ and your friend got rejected. rclxub.gif
But anyway, thanks for the information & I shall take note of it. notworthy.gif

you don't have to estimate.....the requirement is gbp800/mth for london and 600 out of london, for 9 months (which is the actual academic year).....ie 7200 and 5400 respectively.....you only need to show funds for the 1st year.......

and of course your course fees for the 1st year, which is clearly shown in cas document from your uni......

you can avoid needing to translate the birth cert and letter from parent if the money is in your own account.......needs to be in the account for 30 days at least, as shown by a statement/bankbook dated not longer than 28 days before application.......

So, you mean I just have to show GBP7,200 (London) instead of showing then GBP800 x 12months = GBP9,600, since I'll only be there for a year.

I'm wondering is there such thing as showing more funds would made the student visa application to be easier approved.

Thanks for the reminder, all the bank statements still not yet process yet and will do few months before application.

Hi all.. Just wanted to know from those currently studying in sheffield.. how is life there.. planning to go there for next year intake... tq.

Sheffield itself is the student city. It's not a campus so you get more choices of things around and you not need to stay in your room everyday. It's quite a friendly city to live in compared to more southern places, and because things are almost made for student, you'll fit in just nice. smile.gif

How do you compare London to Sheffield? If Sheffield is a student city, does that means living expenses & entertainment expenses would definitely much more lower compare to London?

ops .. forgotten about that, good thing u point it out ... the form did state it but its confusing ...
anyway, just beware of public bank book ... my gf got rejected coz public bank book was too confusing the the border officers did not understand and rejected her application .. i wasnt there with her when she went to collect her visa, that is wat i have been told.. so far most of my friends used fixed deposit certificates and got through quickly ...

Sheffield is known to be more student friendly, things r cheap and abundance due to the amount of student over there ...
for example, electronic games, can get quite cheap, genuine ones, though its second hand ... food, way way cheaper than London ...

local students here doesnt live in luxury nor poverty, everything they do, they plan and have a budget and most of the budget spends on drinking laugh.gif ... i got laughed at because i got a bus card and took bus to sports park which is around 20mins walk away, kinda embarrassing though tongue.gif ...
this does not apply to London though ... whistling.gif

just get all ur documents right, and u will be fine .. took me 4days to get it during the pre-peak season (early August) ...

ps: anyone doing bodybuilding/fitness/sports that require any fitness stuff such as protein powders just let me know .. i got a few reliable sites that i tried before and some good local brands .. thumbup.gif

Can anybody who is currently studying in UK universities tell me how must is the estimated cost for Bachelor's Degree? I've checked out Birmingham in particular and the estimated cost is about 10k-15k pounds. I'm not too sure if this applies for the whole course, per year or only per semester.

Any help would be greatly appreciated notworthy.gif

You don't have to be in the UK to know the cost of the tuition for the degree.

The 10-15 thousand pounds is the annual tuition fee. If the degree spans 3 years, then tuition is 30-45 thousand pounds.

students please note......

while it is not stated in their website so, british border agency now wants a cxr report(not the film) on first arrival for msians......

so get one done before you arrive...........otherwise they will do one for you on arrival, and charge for it, and delay your arrival process..........

What's CXR report? and can it be done at anywhere?

So, you mean we have to conduct the whatever test and get the report and get ourselves prepared before entering UK?
