Hi! Im goin to further up my study in uk this upcoming january.. Staffordshire University. This is my 1st tym staying oversea.

I got 1 problem, i cant speak english well.. Is there any prob tht i need to be prepared of?
*
u know what?
i dun think I speak good english but the locals here do think otherwise about my speaking
my advice is to brush up as much as you can now, and just be CONFIDENT when you are here
imagine, when you come across a mat salleh who speaks just some basic Malay, will you think he speaks bad Malay?
I am by no mean complacent with my English proficiency, it is far from perfect, but the first step to improve is just to be confident and speak

Oh hello... didn't know there was a Study in UK thread.

I've been here since Sept 2009. Finished my degree in May 2010 and I'm awaiting the course commencement for my MSc in Jan 2011.

Hit me up if you have any questions regarding life here in the UK or if you're NBTD and want to chat.

PS - If you're in Sheffield... all the more reason to!

speak english more often from now onwards, and be very vigilant about not using LAH, KAN, MAH, MEH etc etc
you have to un-manglish your english laugh.gif

also, reading helps improving your english. reading aloud will improve it faster.

like seriously.......

in addition, if the new rules goes through, it would mean scraping of tier 1 work after study visa, and an end to staying on to work after your studies.......everybody will have to leave.......

It's still out for public consultation at the moment.

If they scrap the PSW, it would make looking for jobs a lot harder. Most likely you will need to start job hunting sooner (which most people do anyway because of the recruitment season by large corporations) and you will only have a four months period after graduation to remain in the UK to look for work. It is alleged that a large number of PSW holders end up doing menial, none study related work.

However, given the pressue in tuition fees and cuts in universities, hopefully someone in the comittee would be intelligent enough to connect the dots and realise quite a number of people will be put off coming into the UK because of this. In addition, given the decreasing number of locals graduating with a science/math degree, one could hope that they allow for some exception in the PSW, similar to SEGS (science and engineering graduate scheme) previously.

Anyway, the above is purely my opinion, not any official view.

While the entire matter is terribly gloom, I doubt the English language competency requirement will be the main issue here.

Where courses include a work placement the minimum ratio of study to work placement would be raised from 50:50 to 66:33 so courses would become "less attractive to people using them as a way to gain access to the UK employment market". Most courses only have a year or less, if any, work placement. This makes study at least 2x more than the work placement period, but at least it only affects courses.

The "Tier 1 Post Study Work Route" will be closed. This has enabled international students to stay in the UK for up to two years after being awarded their degree, working in unskilled jobs, in order to look for skilled work. Instead they will be restricted to applying for skilled jobs.
Any idea what "skilled work" encompasses?

The government is considering whether to require students who want to stay in the UK after their initial course to extend their studies to leave the UK and re-apply from overseas. Whoa, so future grad, doctoral and postdoc students have to leave first, wth?!

Skilled work = Engineerse, accountants, lawyers etc. Their argument is that they have people working in McD, or menial office work using the PSW and the HSMP. I'd be really surprised if the 3rd one went through as that's just plain silly.

Having said all that, this whole immigration thing is a political move to begin with. And given that the government suffered quite a blow on the cuts in universities and tuition fees issues, they just might use this to gain back some political grounds.

Except these actions would further reduce their budgets as they'd get less revenue...

This is really unwelcoming for new students lol - although the situation is already quite dire and the main points mentioned in the article aren't very damaging, I haven't yet read the PDF.

just wondering. For those who want to apply job for next year ( expected graduation in June 2011)

when is the deadline for submitting resume?

and according to my lecturer's opinion, most likely PSW will be scrap of. A bit unhappy for that, since we paid so much to come here.

Lost the chance to earn back the money used to study here. sad.gif

You should start now. Don't forget the recession made looking for work even harder.

Hello all, I'm wondering do any of you guys have any agency/agents contact for applying to do post-graduate studies in UK?

I'm planning to further my studies in UK, specifically London.

Setting aside the issue of education fees hike/barriers to enter UK for education has been increased, I would like to know is there any smoother route to study in UK.

Note: I'm not trying to use studies as a path to enter UK & work there. I'm solely planning to complete my masters there at the shortest time.

Thanks all! Advices/recommendations are welcome, perhaps criticism too. smile.gif

I did everything on my own, i mean application. Took me almost 8months in advance to research each uni and module that suits me. Post-grad focuses on a smaller scope which is very different from undergrad, if u get onto the wrong module that doesnt interest u, u will have a hard time completing it.
As long as u have all the financial stuff ready in the bank account, it wouldnt be hard for u to get a visa, that of course u must have an unconditional offer letter beforehand. Most post-grad in UK are only 12months which is the shortest, and u can try out graduate scheme after u get awarded.

8 months? Wow, you're a proactive person. smile.gif Oh well, I'm planning it now for next year June-Sep period leaving. You have got your point & have clearly in mind that what I'm going to pursue for my post-graduate. What makes me worried would be the meeting of entry requirement for certain university. Sigh, I heard many people saying don't worry about the stated entry requirements, for e.g. 3.5 CGPA and etc, because they would usually take you in. However, I'm not really convinced about them simply taking anyone in that can't meet their entry requirements.

Oh well, regarding the application of visa. I have another slight problem. For instance, I open a FD saving accounts now (December). And then, FD account don't usually have bank statements. If I'm applying the VISA on the August 2011, then how can I prove to them the monies has already been in the bank for the past 8/9 months? I don't know if this is a correct question being asked though.
