Neal: Carragher could manage Reds

Club legend Phil Neal believes defender Jamie Carragher has what it takes to become a future Liverpool manager.

59-year old Neal spent 11-years at Anfield, making 459 league appearances and winning eight league titles as well as four European Cups.

He also achieved success as a manager of Bolton, Coventry City, Cardiff City and Manchester City, and has urged new Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson to get current Reds hero Jamie Carragher to follow the same path.

"He should think about his coaching badges," Neal told The Sun.

"I'd like Jamie to be part of the management under Roy Hodgson. He's Liverpool through and through."

Carragher, 32, has spent his entire career at Liverpool, making 435 appearances and playing a crucial role in the club's 2005 Champions League win.

Added on July 28, 2010, 7:38 pmDrenthe's Liverpool move is a hoax

The agent of Royston Drenthe has revealed that the Facebook account claiming the player's imminent move to Liverpool is fake.

The Real Madrid wing-back supposedly declared on his Facebook account that he is set to leave the Bernabeu for a move to Anfield.

But Spanish newspaper Marca have now revealed that the Facebook profile does not belong to the player himself and is a hoax.

Sources close to Drenthe have also claimed he has deleted his Facebook account and that the hoax account has been set up by an imposter originating from outside Netherlands.

Now the player's agent has confirmed that the account is indeed fake and will be taking legal action on the hoaxer behind it.

He also added that Drenthe will be staying at Madrid next season.

Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: "Royston does not have a Facebook page, a Twitter page or a MySpace page. We will be taking legal action against the person who set up this false Royston Drenthe account.

"Royston is definitely staying at Real Madrid. He is happy there, he has spoken to the club directors and is looking forward to the new season at the Bernabeu."

Despite the hoax behind speculation linking the former Netherlands under-21 star to Liverpool, the club's interest in the player is real, with Italian sides Fiorentina, Lazio and Juventus also keen in prying him from the Bernabeu.

maybe not in the near future. he more suitable to an assistant if he decided to hang his boots after his contract expires. but i really wish he could manage liverpool someday. and i hope he didnt up be a bitter pundit like most of ex liverpool players.

Who has flown to Macedonia?

28th Jul 2010 - Latest News

Liverpool have landed in Macedonia ahead of the Europa League third qualifying round clash against FK Rabotnicki without any of their England internationals as Roy Hodgson puts his faith in the Reds' starlets.

The likes of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Glen Johnson and Joe Cole have remained at Melwood as they continue to ease their way back into the groove following the World Cup.

Instead, youngsters such as Jonjo Shelvey, Nathan Eccleston, Martin Hansen, Peter Gulacsi, David Amoo, Lauri Dalla Valle and Tom Ince have been included in the 20-man travelling party.

However, Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger and Sotirios Kyrgiakos were amongst the squad that departed from John Lennon airport this morning - as were new boys Milan Jovanovic and Danny Wilson - as the Reds prepare to kick off the 2010-11 season.

Liverpool squad: Cavalieri, Aquilani, Agger, Jovanovic, Kyrgiakos, Lucas, Wilson, Ngog, Spearing, Darby, Shelvey, Kelly, Skrtel, Eccleston, Ayala, Hansen, Gulacsi, Amoo, Dalla Valle, Ince.

pretty much the strongest team available. the addition of skrtel and agger would give much more stability to the defence, am hoping to see wilson play. btw when is the match exactly ? icon_question.gif

Due to his name, I'd always thought Luke Young was... well, young.
But he's a retired international at 31.

looking at the team sheet,

we can see tat RH is aiming for a DEFENSIVE game and at the same time hoping for some quick counter attacking using fast (but not so possesive) control of Ngog, Jonjo Shelvey, Nathan Eccleston, David Amoo, Lauri and Tom Ince

Hodgson evasive on Ashley Young

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson refused to comment on reports he has made a bid for Aston Villa's Luke Young.

Villa manager Martin O'Neill has revealed the defender is considering an approach from an unnamed club.

Sources close to Villa Park have indicated that the offer has come from Anfield but Hodgson would not be drawn when questioned at a press conference for Thursday's Europa League qualifier against FK Rabotnicki.

Hodgson did speak at length about the game in Macedonia - his first competitive fixture since taking charge - but appeared agitated when the subject changed to other matters.

When asked about Young and on rumours linking winger Maxi Rodriguez with a return to Espanyol, the 62-year-old said: "They are not playing tomorrow."

Hodgson was also unhappy when asked if reports that Emiliano Insua's proposed move to Fiorentina had hit a snag were true.

"No information to be given about that," he said.

When another question was asked about the difficulties of trying to sign English players - to comply with new Premier League squad rules - in the current market, Hodgson decided to make a firm point.

He said: "We're changing the subject. I don't think it's right in a room full of Macedonian journalists to be talking about things like homegrown rules and English players.

"I think we should be talking about the game, because that is what interests people.

"The subjects you are bringing up now are subjects for a future press conference.

"It is quite important in these last seven minutes that the questions I try to answer - and I gladly will for the Macedonians - will be about the football match tomorrow and not things like systems of play and future transfer targets or the long-term future of English football."

The proposed deal for Young is believed to be worth just over half the £5million he cost when he joined Villa from Middlesbrough two years ago.

The 31-year-old, who began his career at Tottenham and later joined Charlton, had limited first-team opportunities last season after losing his right-back slot to Carlos Cuellar.

Moving to Merseyside would bring him into competition with current England right-back Glen Johnson but his versatility could see him deployed on the left.

Hodgson is looking for a new left-back with Insua available for sale and Fabio Aurelio having been released.

Young has played in the position on several occasions under O'Neill in preference to Nicky Shorey.

Why is it the English cant play yet Slovak can when both of the countries only reached 2nd round of WC? Is it English players more of a commodity? Cole & Carra not even played all the matches but Skrtel did. hmm.gif
