Liverpool FC and Everton FC told to pay for police traffic marshalls at matches

LIVERPOOL’S football clubs are in a stand-off with the council after the police announced they will no longer pay for marshalling traffic on matchdays.

The force wants Liverpool council to pay the cost of managing the high volumes of vehicles going to Goodison and Anfield to save police budgets.

But the council has called in the lawyers and insists it is not responsible and must deal with its own funding cuts. The clubs have also consulted solicitors, and do not believe they should pay either.

City regeneration boss Cllr Malcolm Kennedy said the council should not be “subsidising” multi-million pound clubs.

Opposition leader Cllr Warren Bradley branded the clubs’ position as “ridiculous” and said the council may be able to force the cost on to Liverpool and Everton FC through licensing conditions.

If all parties do not come up with a solution before the 2011/12 season, it could jeopardise Premier League games.

Cllr Kennedy said the police’s suggestion the council should pay was “unfair”, given that the clubs could meet the cost themselves.

The bill for policing Merseyside football is estimated at well over £100,000 a season and the council has been told around £50,000 of that is for traffic services.

Clubs already pay an estimated £15,000 a game towards policing inside the grounds.
Cllr Kenendy added: “When the government are taking money off us and depriving people of valuable services, for other organisations to withdraw from their responsibilities and hand it over is unfair to the taxpayers of Liverpool.

“The clubs pay their footballers twice what it would cost a week, and I just don’t think we should be subsidising the clubs.”

Cllr Bradley said: “It seems a bit ridiculous that the clubs, making millions of pounds of profit, should find it difficult to fund the police.”

Everton FC said it could not comment on the situation as they had taken legal advice, but a Liverpool FC spokesman said: “Merseyside Police have given the council 12 months notice that they intend to withdraw their match day management of traffic around both of the city’s football clubs and this will come into place at the beginning of the 2011/12 season.

“We believe that Merseyside Police have informed the council that they see this traffic management function as being the responsibility of the local authority.

“In turn, the council have argued that the two clubs are responsible. We believe the legislation clearly indicates that neither Liverpool or Everton should be responsible for the management of matchday traffic around their respective stadia.”

The spokesman added it would continue to try to resolve the situation.

Anfield resident and owner of Esptein’s guest house Patrick Duggan said be believed the council was right: “Of course the clubs should pay, they are creating the disruption. They are part of the problem so should be part of the solution.”

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: “The safety of the public remains paramount for all parties concerned and Merseyside Police will willingly provide advice and guidance in relation to the delivery of the traffic management plan and will continue to act in an enforcement role.”

A Liverpool council spokesman added: “We are in discussions with the police and the clubs to try and reach an amicable solution.”

Either our medical staffs are hopeless or others are taking a risk since Suarez & sketelenburg played in last nite CL Qualifying for Ajax yet both of their nations featured in the last 4...well advanced than England.
I'm not buying the stuff about Eredivisie is inferior & not that demanding, they still play competitive rite.
Putting ur reason Skrtel is included, Gerrard & Cole also miss a big chunk of the season, in theory at least should be fresher than most. unsure.gif

BTW Jonno, ur avatar is pretty distracting wub.gif

well you've got a point, but i think rh's main aim this season is the bpl. thats the big one for us, because another season out of the top 4 would be worse than a disaster. he already pointed out that he is in a lose lose situation as we dont have a big enough squad to compete on all fronts, i expect him to aim for a draw for tonight's match.

Young's Liverpool move collapses

Aston Villa defender Luke Young's proposed move to Liverpool has collapsed, according to The Sun.

The full-back looked set to join the Anfield outfit after his agent revealed the clubs have agreed on a fee.

The 31-year-old was not part of the Villa contingent that travelled to Portugal for a pre-season tournament as he met up with Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson to thrash out a deal.

However, reports have claimed that both parties have failed to reach an agreement.

Meanwhile, midfielder Steve Sidwell is set to join Fulham once the Cottagers have appointed their new manager.

Liverpool face battle to keep Spain U-19 star Daniel Pacheco as striker mulls Real Sociedad approach

Daniel Pacheco has excited Liverpool fans with his performances for Spain at the Under 19 European Championship.

But the forward admits he can see little chance of breaking through at Anfield and is tempted by a move to Real Sociedad.

The Basque club are keen to strike a deal for the 19-year-old and Pacheco revealed he had been taking guidance from former Liverpool and Sociedad midfielder Xabi Alonso.
Illuminating: Daniel Pacheco has been one of the stand-out performers of Spain's Under-19 European Championship campaign

'Of course, playing for Real (Sociedad) appeals to me, without doubt,' he told El Mundo Deportivo. 'I have heard good things about the club, the city and the people, and if things move in that direction, I will be happy to play there.'

Alonso, now a key part of the Real Madrid midfield, played for five years at Sociedad before joining Liverpool in 2004.

'He (Xabi) has been helping and advising me,' said Pacheco. 'I've been told good things about the coach. They say he bets on youngsters who have character, who like to play.

'I've been told about Zubieta (the training ground), the way they work and the humilty of the club. Everything I hear is good.'

It is unclear whether Liverpool will be prepared to let go of a young talent who has helped Spain's Under 19s to the Euro final in France, but Pacheco fears for his chances at Liverpool after so far making just seven appearances in three years since being signed from Barcelona.

'I don't know much about the negotiations,' he said. 'I'd like to play in La Liga. Above all I want game time or to fight for game time.

'In Liverpool I won't get this opportunity and I would love to have it. Right now the club are signing people and I don't think I will have opportunities. At 19 years old the most important thing is to continue progressing.'

Jovanovic - I am special
Serbian turned down Madrid move before Anfield switch

New Liverpool signing Milan Jovanovic has revealed how he turned down a move to Real Madrid before agreeing his Anfield switch.

The Serbia forward is expected to make his competitive debut for the Reds in Thursday night's Europa League qualifier against FK Rabotnicki.

The 29-year-old, who can play on the left wing or as a striker, was lured to Merseyside by former boss Rafa Benitez on a free transfer.

And former Standard Liege attacker Jovanovic revealed how he had previously rejected a move to the Bernabeu after he was not guaranteed regular first-team football.
Very happy

"I think 99 per cent of people I spoke to told me they did not understand why I said no to Real," said Jovanovic, who scored Serbia's winner against Germany in the group stage of the World Cup.

"But maybe I am special. I thought if I went it would be as an ordinary player, but that, if I stayed, I would be where I felt good, where I was a star in Belgium.

"It is only a small league but Standard Liege won two titles and two Super Cups while I was there and I won two personal awards, one from coaches and players and the second from journalists. So I was very happy.

"Real offered me just a one-year deal with an option for two years. I said four, they said no and so I turned them down. Maybe they are the biggest club in the world, but I always knew that other big clubs would come.

"I will never go somewhere where I only play a small part. Why? It is better to be happy somewhere. Now I only want to look forward and play for Liverpool."
