Just bought a new hard disk  smile.gif . Do I need to do surface checks it for errors first b4 using?

After partitioning & formating its says healthy.
*
If you did full format, no need as the check is done during formatting

If you did quick format, yes it is better to do the check

Hi,
I get yellow warning for HDD tune for :-
Reallocation Sector Count  100 100 2 10
I google a bit, some said if show yellow on this then can start shopping new HDD already.
Some said if the number is 1 then ok.
Well should I replace my hdd?  notworthy.gif

Just a warning which could lead to:
1. More reallocation sector count -> leads to hard disk failure
2. No changes - hard disk lives for a long time
3. Sudden premature failure of the hard disk (assuming the sector is damaged by mechanical failure)

There is no 100% chance of saying what can happen, better backup important stuff.

Which ext.hdd with 500GB is more worth currently?seagate or WD or toshiba? I want to support USB 3.0 one.And then, my old ext.hdd is no response when plug into my computer, is tat any way to back up all my documents in my old ext.hdd?

All external hdd brands have 500GB. If you are looking for 500GB, go for those 2.5in (without external power supply)
I am not sure which models have usb 3.0. Go browse at Lowyat smile.gif

if by using torrent software, yes, its could effected the lifespan of harddisk.
*
I have monitored utorrent and it writes to the hard disk at most once per minute (under default settings), on an average of once per 90seconds. So torrent software will probably cause much less 'damage' than browsing websites using a browser who constantly write to temporary files/cache.

Normal usage should not affect hard disk life considerably, unless you defragment/virus scan 24/7 subject it to abuse and high temperatures.

If reliability is important to you, use RAID 1 and continuously create backup.

But, between these two:
WD 500GB 16M (CAVIAR Blue) or Seagate 500GB (BARRACUDA) 6 Gb/s,
I'll take the WD Blue

Green drives are ok for storage/NAS, but not for boot drive.

Get an IDE casing (2.5 or 3.5in, depends on your hard disk)
