If reliability is important to you, use RAID 1 and continuously create backup.
But, between these two: WD 500GB 16M (CAVIAR Blue) or Seagate 500GB (BARRACUDA) 6 Gb/s, I'll take the WD Blue |

Get an IDE casing (2.5 or 3.5in, depends on your hard disk)
