At these kind of price range its gonna take 6 months to recover back to old level.

its going to take longer than that, WD estimated its going to take at least 6 months for them to get production up and running again assuming the floods doesn't worsen than what was initially planned. By the time they finish the backlogs...Could very well be a year....or before Christmas 2012 if everything goes smoothly.

Seagate on the other hand, just announced that the following quarter will be a bullish market for them laugh.gif

I heard that in spite of the flooding events, Seagate Hard disk production has been limited by international organization to ensure "fair" business environment. How true is this? If true then this would not only drive hdd prices out of the ceiling but outer space doh.gif shakehead.gif

Do you have a source for that?
It sounds ridiculous

No, I don't. I just heard of it. I don't believe it either but just want to see if anyone is able to confirm that.

Reuters just reported that Seagate is lowering production due to shortage of parts and not the reason above. hmm.gif

The last time I checked abt WD, the flood level is almost hitting the roof of some of their factory buildings sweat.gif . Insurance companies are going to kena teruk kao kao this time.
And the peak of the flood has yet to come as high tide is scheduled to be next week. (now is low tide).

Maybe we'll see WD HDD boxes floating out in the river enxt week doh.gif

I feel March 2012 is a very optimistic estimate...I estimate could take 3-4 months extra cuz March is the time when they can start clearing backlogs in orders...

American based PC Vendors won't be charging extra for their systems ... yet. Taiwan-based however are out of luck, their HDD inventories will probably won't go beyond this month and WD has already announced that they will not service them until the flood crisis is resolved.

Why is buffalo also expensive. Nothing to do with the flood what.
*
Yes, it has to do with the flood. The main problem with the flooding is not just Hard Disk assembly (We still got Seagate to assembly hard disks). The problem is a lot of the supplier manufacturing the hdd components also kena. What to assemble when you got no parts?

I checked the latest pricelist at a few shops...seems like the price has stabilize a bit for now, and in fact, seagate hdd price are decreasing slightly.

Yea because of thailand flood?
*
Obviously yes, even though some companies are not directly affected and sellers are jacking up prices because demand exceeds supply right now.

Our best move as consumers as a whole = hold off all hdd purchases. That way we can force the prices to come back down as soon as possible. (which in the end, probably next year)

Factories back in full production does not mean prices will drop instantly.
You need to factor in..
1. Shipping time (6-8 weeks to ship from continent to continent).
2. Custom release time
3. Internal shipping to local distributors.
4. Time taken by dealers to reduce the price, which they will gradually decrease over a period of time.

by the time all these happen, it will be around mid-2012.

WD kena hit left and right big time this time, kena whack by flood, being sue by seagate by something they might not have committed, and forced by EU to sell off 1 of their factory because of monopoly of HDD market. sweat.gif

largest is 1.5TB for 2.5" right now, due to the limitations of how many platters you can fit in vertically...

Walao.... WD so unfortunate this time? Being struck by "waves" of obstacles...... (puns intended)

But seriously, the sellers are trying to rake in high and ride the flood wave to cut us consumer's throat....
I still remember before this flood, ALLIT in digitalmall had to held a promotion to sell off their inventory of HDDs at the entrance.... but now.... they dont scare you dont buy, they scare you cant afford to buy..... doh.gif  doh.gif
Yea... so far only saw 1.5TB for 2.5" on pricelists now... but the price is like >RM500-600.... pretty pain.... so i still choose 1TB.... wait till 2TB comes....
*
Yeap, but i still stand by WDC. So far my experience with seagate hdd...erm, 5 hdd spanning from 20 years ago until now....all died in less than a year...while my fireballs (2!) and wdc 120 GB 8MB cache from year 2000 still running strong flex.gif

About Samsung spinspoints, my colleagues all KO on the same day, 1 week after warranty end (they buy together from pc fair). not sure if its coincidence or what.... sweat.gif

Yea, but u might see the 2.5" height being taller if its 2TB....unless its SSD laugh.gif. that would set u back in the range of RM10k liao haha....

i think i will plug out my wdc 120 GB and put it into my NAS instead for now... rclxub.gif

IMO, sometimes it depends on luck when buying HDD. if you're unlucky, you may got yourself  a faulty/bad HDD from the very beginning.  doh.gif

btw, been using seagate for 3years+. no problem whatsoever.  smile.gif
*
Good for you, seagate hard disks without fail failed me within a year (including 2 that came installed in hp notebooks~!). I think i got 6-7 dead seagate hard disks at home.

Fireballz still the best la...bring back memories thumbup.gif

i think the performance difference between blue and green are quite slight, in your comparison green has bigger cache, so i'll say go for the green.

if you really want performance just get the black.

The best is to wait for the price to drop, so that we can reduce the demand to match the supply.

Knowing malaysian market....once go up very slow to come down laugh.gif

anyway some update about WD Plants, one WD plant in thailand has restarted production on November 30.

Head slider production in thailand to resume in March 2012, while WD Penang will kick off production (if im not wrong this is ahead of schedule) during the same time as well.

The rest of their plants are still....under water cry.gif

There's no better deal right now unless you're desperate, I saw RM400 on a 1TB WDC Blue and almost fainted at Sarawak ICT Expo.
Some news said most of the manufacturer already restored to their production state and there're noticeable drop in price at some e-tailer (newegg) but yet to see any changes in MY (or is it already?! someone please clarify).
*
Not all production have resumed to normal. WD manage to get only ONE plant up and running, the rest are still under water. Even when production is up and running, expect 2 or 3 months for them to be able to start shipping out to destinations (it takes 6-8 weeks for them to ship from plant to destination). Not to mention it will take a few months to clear backlog....

Its great that the japanese sliders companies manage to ship out their equipment with sampan and continue production on temporary higher ground, otherwise we might see the crisis propagate even further across all the hdd manufacturers.

In a nutshell....price will probably decrease slightly during CNY, and back to normal price in august next year (this is an optimistic observation). Honest thought? I don't think it'll be that smoothly.

Unifi 5Mbps isn't 5 Megabytes per second dude.

5Mbps = 625 kBps

They will try to repair/refurbish their machines....i dont think they will reuse the water-logged components. Water-logged components are generally impossible to be reused...
