QUOTE(everling @ Oct 13 2010, 09:06 PM) What is your definition and how would you short stroke your hardisk? When you first partition the RAID 0 array, you create the partition on the outermost part of the platter which is the fastest part of the hardisk. You put your OS, page file and the most used programs on this fastest part of the hardisk. The other non frequently used data can be put into the other partition for additional storage. The storage partition is not frequently accessed, so no worries of degrading the short stroked RAID 0 array. The performance would only degrade into a performance of a normal drive when data from the other partition is accessed. But loading the OS and running programs on that short stroked RAID 0 partition array would still force and limit the hardisk head to seek in the narrow and fastest part of the hardisk. |

QUOTE(jchue73 @ Oct 13 2010, 10:42 PM) What is your definition and how would you short stroke your hardisk? This type: Short Stroking: How It WorksWhen you first partition the RAID 0 array, you create the partition on the outermost part of the platter which is the fastest part of the hardisk. You put your OS, page file and the most used programs on this fastest part of the hardisk. The other non frequently used data can be put into the other partition for additional storage. But loading the OS and running programs on that short stroked RAID 0 partition array would still force and limit the hardisk head to seek in the narrow and fastest part of the hardisk. Your description of what you did uses age old concepts of partitioning. Short stroking, iianm, is something relatively new. QUOTE Make a partition, it'll be on the outter edge, done. That TH article takes the simplest task and shows how to waste a bunch of effort to get the same result. Source: Short Stroking Question This post has been edited by everling: Oct 13 2010, 10:56 PM |

Hello everyone! I want to buy a new 1TB external hdd and considering getting hd103sj F3 Spinpoint (rm174 @Czone from previous post) since it get positive review from everyone here but I want the transfer speed faster than usb2.0. I'm wondering which enclosure option would be better, any advice?
usb3.0: hornettek goliath ht-318-u3 (RM150) + expresscardbus usb3.0 (RM196) or esata: vantec nst-d100su (RM120) + expresscard esata (RM95) Or should I just get a ready-made external hdd? Thank you This post has been edited by Nam226: Oct 15 2010, 01:46 PM |

QUOTE(Potatojii @ Oct 15 2010, 01:41 PM) If you meant by SSD, it is very worth the money on certain cases. For regular people with regular needs like browsing the internet and gaming, the answer is no. But if SSDs become cheap enough, the answer is a strong yes; because these people usually need all the help they can get to keep their computers running at optimal performance. For programmers who build huge C/C++ applications a lot, the answer is clear yes. I have reduced a six hour build time to about three hours with the help of a "budget"-class SSD. For programmers that works with large applications, the answer is probably yes. For enthusiasts that are willing to spend a lot of money, the answer is strongly recommended. Anybody who plans to spend RM3K and above on hardware ought to seriously consider it. This post has been edited by everling: Oct 15 2010, 02:57 PM |

Not really, if you think about the future, your next HDD purchase won't require you to buy another USB3 adapter right? Well you save for every new HDD you going to buy. |

If you put it that way... it does make more sense to invest in usb3.0 for the future instead of esata
