1TB WD ext HDD died on me after ~2 years; want to get a replacement, but should I wait until the prices go down again? It's not extremely urgent, but I do need a place to store my system backups.

Really don't really know when the prices will be back to pre-flooding. So, if your data is important, it may be worth paying higher.

My HDDs have a bad habit of dying on me suddenly, so I'm worried because this is my last working HDD with ALL my data and downloads on it that works....If I get a new one what HDD should I get, and where to find the best prices?

Sent for RMA, I think warranty is 3 years, check here if your HDD is still under warranty http://websupport.wdc.com/warranty/serialinput.asp

Another thing my WD HDD is about to kaput based on the smart indication failing should I RMA to the shop where I bought it OR go straight to the distributor?
First WD fail for me, my HDD is still under warranty.

Just do not expect prices to stabilize well year end or after. Resuming full scale production is a extermely costly and time consuming endeavor not to mention the plants management likely need to 're-hire' lots of the workforce.

Perhaps time to check if your PSU is faulty or if your house power supply is unstable?

Well the house just got renovated and rewired to 3-phase wiring, so hopefully that fixes any issues on that side. Although I normally use power extensions with surge protection (no PSU), so power fluctuations shouldn't have been a major issue. Maybe I just work all my gear too hard. sweat.gif

Meanwhile-- at current prices, is it more worth to buy a 2 TB despite it being nearly RM500, or try and find a 1TB or 1.5TB? I'd go with a 500GB, but I need to back up all my stuff, and that's nearly 610 GB of stuff. Not to mention my backups which were lost when the hard disk sank.

Surge protection won't protect you against power fluctuations, only protect against sudden surge of power such as lightning. Get an AVR instead.
If you're in a hurry, and can afford RM500 then go for 2TB, those 1TB is just around RM100 cheaper, very expensive IMO.

My 1 year WD green 1.5TB is faulty. When copying certain files (wanna backup because it always prompt chkdsk when win7 boot) it will copy halfway and hang. Bought a 3.5' ext casing to try still same so its HDD problem.

Really disappointed with WD green. Should had seen that last few yrs (i still have 1 green 1TB)
