uncle ian.. 18-200mm mahal lar.. how about ini macam? Do consider my milk powder, pampers expense and future child education fund... with that in mind. What kit u recommend for noobie .. body + 2nd hand 3rd party also can (sigma 18-200?).

Sigma 18-200? I suggest you to try the sigma until you satisfied. Tried 5 copies and I gave up! 
The lens suffer focusing problems and the sharpness is very moody. Sometimes this range sharp
Tomorrow the other range sharp. Some days, not sharp at all.  If you have the money, go for canon's 18-200 or the 18-135
Both are beautiful lens 

My observations between my 5D n 1D-

When I 1st plugged in the 17-40 f4 to the 1D, I was like "where the heck did the bokeh disappear to?".  It really is that much less creamy. Had to get a 16-35 f2.8 to gain back the bokeh. The FF rendition is just so much creamier n smoother it's kinda unexplainable in words. So if u were to plug in ur current lenses to an FF, ur reaction is gonna be the opposite which will go like "phwoarrrrrrrr where the heck did all this bokeh come from?"

I dont understand what Canon puts in the 1D(mebe it's got some fairy dust inside ) though coz it's so damn sharp n the level of details in a puny 10mp is just mind blowing. It looks the same as my 5D at 21mp actually. BUT what u will see is the dreamy, creamy, smooth rendition when u go back to the FF. Ur love affair with the 70-200 f2.8L IS may just be reignited by putting it on a FF body. 

So I reckon u shud get an FF instead of an 85L. Coz f4 on the FF is already damn nice, f2.8 is almost too much and f1.4 is already over the nose bleed limit on a FF.   

Found a Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 non-VC with 1 year warranty for RM 1350. VC version will be RM 1750.

If only I had sufficient extra money for a new unit.

If not in a hurry or urgent, save more only buy lor 
It's always advisable to do that unless you never mind a used unit or in an urgent

17-50 > 17-50 VC > 17-40L > 17-55. f2.8 > 16-35L

when will it ever stop huh? oh wait........... it stops when you reach 16-35L? maybe, may be not also. maybe end up having all 5.

then change FF, oops. 16-35 become UWA. then have to 24-70L vs 24-105L vs other brands / makes. kekekekeke.
