Don't bother with the 18-55 IS's hood. It's so shallow, its useless. I use to have one last time, so I know.

QUOTE(jesuck @ Jun 17 2010, 10:49 PM) So many people thinks that superzoom like 18-200mm are poor. No, they are not. Sigma 18-200mm is capable of producing great images. Canon 18-200mm is even better. For the price that you're paying for Canon 18-200mm, the IQ is near to 17-40mm, just lack of L colour and the premium build quality. |

AFAIK, no current lens can be coined having poor IQ. Only can say better or worse comparatively.
18-200 IQ is good for beginner & non pixel peeper. then again if 18-200 is sooo good, nobody will be replacing it with L lens rite ? These are basic questions to ask yoself ...... Is your budget can take it ? Is the zoom range long enough for the things you have in mind ? Is it comfortable in yo hand ?? solid ? feel good ? Lastly, just buy it, use it, not satisfy, time for upgrade ^^ |

QUOTE(DecaPix @ Jun 18 2010, 10:01 AM) I use hood for all my lenses except my 18-55 because it serve n purpose Had an incident where I hit my lenses against wall, tables, other cameras and so on So with the hood, I feel more secure when I hit other cameras or even a wall I rather spend 200 on another hood than fixing my lens which can cost me thousands That is why my hood have scratch marks everywhere after 1 day of usage |

QUOTE(goldfries @ Jun 17 2010, 11:21 PM) the quality is fine. sometimes people don't put in proper perspective. dear goldfries, i haven't gotten my canon 550 but planning to get it next weekend lar. you can view my flickr so many taken with sigma 18-200, that also lower quality than Canon. look at my stock photo gallery, one of the photo was taken with sigma 18-200!!! if quality so bad, how it got accepted by critics more demanding than all of you combined? but anyway i think you're better off just stick to 18-55 IS. upgrade can be done later. However, just my 2 cents. the problem is not starting out with 18-55 first or not. i know it's cheaper and to learn with 18-55 but why i kept thinking about whether to get 18-200 first is because when u get it with kit lens, it's relatively cheapker than buying it alone lor. eg: 550 + 18-135 = RM3.5 / 500 + 18-200 = RM3.8 / 550 + 18-55 = 2.7 with body RM2.4k + 18-200 = around RM4.4k so it basically comes back to the question of whether 'dai' or not 'dai'. wanna be wise consumer mar.. budget only save around RM4k so wanna get the best deal lor. just wanna ask you a question here, i heard that 18-135 and 18-200 actually the zooming ain't that big a difference based on calculation. so i'd rather get a kit II for 550d than kit II for 500 hor? |

So, I did the calculation, what do you think? IMO, the 18-200 is a very good lens, the build is quite solid, tad bit better than 18-135. (Though I've only handle that lens once on my friend's 7D) |
