dear goldfries, i haven't gotten my canon 550 but planning to get it next weekend lar.
However, just my 2 cents. the problem is not starting out with 18-55 first or not.
i know it's cheaper and to learn with 18-55 but why i kept thinking about whether to get 18-200 first
is because when u get it with kit lens, it's relatively cheapker than buying it alone lor.
eg: 550 + 18-135 = RM3.5 / 500 + 18-200 = RM3.8 / 550 + 18-55 = 2.7
with body RM2.4k + 18-200 = around RM4.4k

so it basically comes back to the question of whether 'dai' or not 'dai'.
wanna be wise consumer mar.. budget only save around RM4k so wanna get the best deal lor.

just wanna ask you a question here, i heard that 18-135 and 18-200 actually the
zooming ain't that big a difference based on calculation.
so i'd rather get a kit II for 550d than kit II for 500 hor?
*
4k no need to use all one shot.

yes i know 18-200 cheaper with kit.

18-200 and 18-135 = pretty close coverage actually. 200 has a bit more reach.

if your idea is lazy person want convenience and straight cover as much range as possible, 18-200 lor.

if your idea is lazy person want convenience and straight cover as much range as possible but want to cut cost, 18-135 lor.

put it very simple for you already.

200-135 = 65mm
65mm x 1.6 = 104mm in difference.

So, I did the calculation, what do you think?
IMO, the 18-200 is a very good lens, the build is quite solid, tad bit better than 18-135. (Though I've only handle that lens once on my friend's 7D)

135 n 200...65mm at the tele end really didn't make much different. With so many pixels at 18MP 550D, some cropping will compensate the 65mm different. (Of cause some1 might say otherwise, this issue is very subjective).

Beside the cropping, here are some annoying issues i found with 18-200....

1. Serious zoom creep (i mean annoyingly serious for my taste), due to the weight of the lens front element, when attached to 550D and dangling on the neck, the lens will usually face down, & it will instantly extend out if not locked, this might create a problem of unknowingly knocking the lens everywhere.

2. the zoom lock, yes it is there to lock down the lens from creeping out, BUT it also an annoyance to contantly flipping the switch when you are using the camera sporadically, such as in street photography.

3. Least issue of all, it is heavier than 18-135 & cost more, this is very subjective as some has stronger biceps & deeper pocket ^^

IQ comparison, no comments, both r non-L cool.gif

Aiyoooooo how can say use cropping to make up for lack of 65mm 1? doh.gif doh.gif doh.gif
U can't use a 135 lens n crop it to make it look like a 200mm. It's not a simple matter of getting the subject to look the same size. The bokeh n compression is very different. 65mm is a lot of difference. It's not a trivial thing where u can just crop n voilà! Like that better just buy 135L n crop, no need to buy 200L lor. rclxub.gif

Aiyoh to settle this 18-200 issue.... doh.gif
Got Money, Buy 18-200
Not enuff money, Buy 18-135
Budgeting, stick to 18-55mm lens

other alternatives, juz get Tamron or Sigma~ smile.gif
tamron 18-270, u get plenty of ZOOOM
sigma 18-200, decent usage like Goldfries says

or if u read May issue DCM, they tested all rounder lens and Sigma 18-125 is good biggrin.gif
