You can't really go wrong with a Fenix, but if you asked me for a recommendation I would recommend a Quark AA or a Quark MiNi AA from here. Of course, others will have other recommendations wink.gif

Hi guys and all flashlight sifus, I need a recommendation for a flashlight. My requirements are a either a 2xCR123 or single 18650 cell light.

My main requirement is throw, throw, throw! It's for use in my boating hobby.

I've been researching on a Tiablo A9, but have found out that the new R5 pills are inferior to the older q5s in terms of outright throw. The Deree DBS with the R2 is still available locally by gadgethighway, but the the price of the light with the aspherical head is out of my price range. And lastly the luma power D-mini VX with the teleforce head, but again, it's unavailable to purchase with the r2 pills anymore. It's all the R5s and they're no longer good throwers.
So guys, if you can point me in the right direction for a good throwing light for my requirements. Oh btw, I very much prefer to purchase only with local stores and would prefer lights that are factory options, not modded ones. My budget is around 350 for the light and maybe an additional 100 for a throwing head for models with such options.

Thank you.

Sorry mate, i asked for recommendations based on my requirements and needs for the job the light is meant to do, not one based on my maxed permitted budget. Nice try though

How much throw do you need? 100 metres? 200 metres? 500? Extreme throwers can be had, but at extreme prices...
*
For my current usage distances, I'd say around 180 - 225 metres. I know there's some very pricey lights out there, but I'd much prefer them in a rather compact size, with lengths no more than 8 - 9 inches and not one gigantic bulbous head. It'll be inconvenient to lug around.

Well, rest assure this light does throw and it does meet your requirement but it comes with a price though. The version I am selling is the latest one rated at 200 lumens with TIR optics.

Beamshots here at post #3.

If you want throw, then search for an R2 LED light. I got one a Nitecore Extreme R2 which have been with me for a few years now. It sure throws. Search Gadgetworld2u for R2. There are a few there and cheap too (within your budget).

You may also need to read about what you want at CandlePowerForums or even at our local forum thebrightside.

Prepare to spend $$$ if you want throw of 180 - 225 metres. An HID light will do - Polarion, Helios, Microfire?

I agree. 180 - 225 meters is a long distance to cover for *any* light.

Unfortunately, throw is loosely correlated to the size of the flashlight head (i.e. the reflector or aspheric lens size) - so whatever you end up with, it'll have to be on the bigger side. If you want to throw 220meters, I'd say you'd need > 50000lux.

Take for example my Mag09 (Mag2D with a 2000 lumen CL1909 bulb) which outhrows the Mag85 and DBS w/ reflector by quite a bit. I'd estimate it in the 45000-50000lux range - and even that only faintly illuminates objects 230meters away. So you'll probably need > 50000 lux.

I'd say your best best would be a DBS/Tiablo A9 w/ aspheric, or a Mag1D with SST-50 dome removed, if you're trying to keep things small.

I don't think any of these fit your budget, but at least you know what lux range you'd need

Even my Mag Triple SST-90 doesn't throw that far. For wide area illumination maybe.

hello taingonghai, just a heads up... you may wanna have a look at EagleTac T20C2 MKII with "CREE XR-E R2 Binned LED" (remember you'll need to specify the LED when you order, else it comes default XP-G). Philightsophy is our local EagleTac distributor, he has a thread in LYN here >> http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1121879 but it's a little out-dated. tongue.gif
You can further visit EagleTac website >> http://www.eagletac.com/flashlights/t20c2.html for more information.
The basic kit should fit well within your budget. Cheers. biggrin.gif

Well thank u guys for all ur recommendations. I've snagged a deal on a used DBS (R2) plus the aspherical head for RM310. Read some reviews on CPF, and one seems to state a decent throw and illumination of up to 900ft! Well, maybe it's a little far fetched, but I'll be sure to test it out at sea when i go on my trip next weekend. All things considered I'm not looking for a particularly large area of illumination.

Managed to try out a A9 with the collimator head as well from a local flashlight enthusiast in penang. I'd say decent up to 120 metres. Really good illumination of the targeted area.I've set a limit on the size of the light, therefore I know choices are pretty much limited.

Thanks again guys.

I recommend to following.
Twisty cheap and awesome keychain lights: 47's MiNi AA, iTP A(i dunno what). iTP cheaper but less efficient and no knurling.
Clicky: Fenix E10. Awesome build!! 1 mode only! Simple and sweet.

If you wanna spend more then ur choices are limitless. Lol

Maglite is not too bad depending on which model of Surefire or Pelican u are comparing to. Some of course are FAR brighter than maglites.

Hey, the Fenix LD01 is a good AAA light. My dad has been using one for a year now (XR-E version) and it’s been fine and steady. Now with the XP-E LED version, the beam profile is nicer.

For AA flashlight, depending on what you actually want. Around RM80 you can get the Fenix E10, as recommended above also (1-mode only at 55 Lumens), good enough for work, camping, blackout, every day use. But it’s not a thrower.

Multiple modes, the Fenix LD10 is still good stuff.

185-225 meters is still far to fetch for small handheld lights, although you can get some illumination and try to make it out with a binoculars, the object would not be illuminated very well. I’m surprised the aspheric only reach 120 meters, I think it should be able to go more.. hmm..

We have throwers that could give some good illumination at that distance, check out the Olight SR90. Sometimes when you get poisoned, the price doesn't matter anymore brows.gif

You got a budget for your thrower?

Several (okay) handheld smaller throwers options are
- Surefire LX2
- Surefire E2DL
- Fenix TK20
- 4Sevens Maelstrom G5
- Fenix TK11
- Tiablo A9, A10 R2

The thing about sea is that it absorbs plenty of light. Lights like the E2DL, LX2 and G5 can sufficiently penetrate 100 meters, questionable visibility more than that. A Tiablo A9 or A10 with aspheric lens may help you a little more.

A proper sea light for that awesome throw would probably be a HID. Competitive to HID is probably the Olight SR50, SR90 and SR91. They are big, huge lights.

A more lower range, in comparison with HIDs (but expensive still) are:
- Fenix TK40
- Fenix TK30
- EagleTac M2XC4 (XR-E version)
- Surefire M3LT
- Surefire M6 with MN21 bulb
