Here's a link to my flickr account. I made it specially for the unboxing! smile.gif

Graphics
i. Just completed benchmarking it with Unigine Heaven 2.0 under Direct3d11, which turned out quite slow. Scored a lousy 259 with an average FPS of 10.3 on high settings with native resolution! I did another check on native resolution with low settings and it gave a score of 329 with PFS of 12.9, which isn't a big difference from the initial score. So the claim that some said that the native resolution was too heavy for the graphic card is now plausible.
Not so decent results, but I haven't tried it with games yet. Maybe I'll try it out with L4D2 since thats the only game I'm currently playing.

ii. Some of the guys here suggested I test it out on 3D Mark 06. Most fortunately, I've been holding an original CD which came along with my Sapphire where I couldn't get it to work on my current desktop. Until just today I got it to run smoothly with much patience. Had a decent rating on optimum settings with a score of 6721 which was what some reviews on the net gave for Nvidia Geforce GT330. It strengthened my faith in my new laptop. thumbup.gif

I also attached the benchmark results for anyone who wants to check it out for themselves. tongue.gif

General Usage
Overall, the layout is great with a comfortable keyboard, got used to it quite fast; still craving for back lit ones. Weight is surprisingly lighter than what I expected. The design is sleek and elegant with the huge 17" screen. Sound wise, I bluetoothed an mp3 from my phone; which took awhile to figure out but the sound was below average. Strain it with high volume and there goes the sound, thinking of getting those mini speakers so I can watch movies with my girl, but I'll stick with my headphones at the moment. Battery lasted for about 2 hours with everything on, bluetooth, wifi, downloads etc. So its quite decent for work. OS response so far was good, but I still prefer a better Windows 7 edition with 64x. The DVD drive was running well but creates a buzz when its functioning, nothing to complain about. Overall, a good laptop for work/college, some media entertainment and light gaming which is exactly what I aimed for. To say its worth the 3k? I should say yes, definitely.

Opinion
As for the casing color I got mines changed for free, apart from the great service I was given, the pleasant surprises on the actual speed of delivery and the build itself; despite being a little disappointed about the graphics along with limited customization for Windows 7 Home Basic, all in all, its worth the 3k spent. Concerning the weight of the laptop, I think it weighs the way it looks, not as heavy as expected. Somewhat lite for its size, but rest assured its best to get a backpack for it if you intend to bring it around, the weight will definitely take a toll on your posture so its not advisable to use a sling bag. Skater bags are always huge so it would go well for this laptop. For those who are into the freedom of customizing your OS to your own preference, such as 3rd party themes, customizing windows layout etc, the Windows 7 Home Basic is limited from full customiztion because it is only available for Home Premium and above, so for me, this was quite a disappointment. The best I'm able to do is just change the wallpaper and change the appereance setting which only came with limited colors. It doesn't come with the 'Personalization' shortcut provided by the better versions. sad.gif

Laptop Bag for teh Vostro:

I just went hunting for a laptop bag and found a sweet deal by someone in the Garage Sales section who was selling laptop bags called Everki. Despite its strange name, the bags looked quite simple and yet stylish for my taste. Well I went to the dealers place this evening at Bangsar, after a tour around Bangsar; lost for a moment, I finally found the place. It was the first turning to the left after the temple at Jalan Bangsar. With much anticipation, I met the dealer, and checked out the backpack. It looked surprisingly small for a 17" bag, which was good. But since the Vostro is quite big, it couldn't fit the edges in. The backpack was slightly smaller for the laptop to fit, even if it did fit, the extra space wouldn't be enough if you were to bring a whole lot of other stuff along. Despite the minor setback there was another model which is meant for 18" laptops, but with less luck. It was out of stock. The price is much expensive than the previous bag I had in mind. But it provides what I need, something to fit the laptop and everything else. So I'll be getting the bag later this Monday, so for those who're having trouble for their bulky/huge laptops, here's a heads up.

Everki Beacon Laptop Backpack: 18"

Everki Swift Laptop Backpack: 17"

Just got the Everki Beacon last night from montell81. It was a swift deal, I came, I saw, I tried and I bought it. Simple and precise. I love the look, I don't really mind its size because the design is quite good. The Dell Vostro fitted perfectly into the bag compartment and there was plenty of space for books and such. I even stuffed in my somewhat cumbersome headphones in. Its quite heavy if you put a lot of things inside, but the weight distribution over the shoulder was somewhat effective, so you wouldn't really feel the actual weight. The only minor downside is I didn't like the way the bag was wrapped around my shoulders, it was a tad wide around my shoulders, if it was slightly narrower it would've been perfect. Despite that, still it was a good deal and a great purchase! Thanks montell81 for the sale! thumbup.gif

Here's a link to some of the pictures I took of my new laptop bag! biggrin.gif

This be teh link to the seller:

More to be done, more to be said, so once I'm done with my fun I'll update you guys! rclxms.gif

Received mine @ 8/4/2010

All comparison are based with Asus K50AB.
My user experience is only based on what i feel, it may not reflect to one's preference.

Built Quality & handling

Chassis feels sturdier and suprisingly better built than i've expected. Less creaks and assembly parts feels better assembled than my previous Asus. Nice multimedia touch screen with bright white lighting as indication. Keyboard wise, it's ok, but i prefer the Compaq CQ' series tactile feel. They are deeper stroked and have more 'mass' to the button. The vostro is ok, definitely not the best, but also not the worst. stroke is a bit short for my liking. Arrow keys are a bit small, sometimes i miss pressed it.

Cover lids are crafted from aluminum, which makes me to believe (as other website reviews indicated), the chassis is made from alu too, which provides better rigidity and less flexing

Screen Quality

Out of the box, it needs some calibration & tuning. I based it on the windows' calibration color tool, and now it seems better to my eyes. Viewing angle, well it's decent. off course, don expect full blown quality from this kind of price. it's OK so to speak, i can live it it well. One thing good, it's not glossy' relatively. compared to my previous Asus, it definitely has the anti glare coating over, sort of like a semi 'matte' viewing experience. i like it alot, it's an improvement over the conventional reflective glasses.

Audio

I would rate it slightly better off than my previous Asus. It has more clarity (probably tuned for more treble?) . OK, for normal use.

Gaming

ALL @ OC mode.

Games I've Played:
- Battlefield Bad company 2 = Smooth with all settings @ medium
- Supreme Commander 2= Smooth all max( game itself is not graphically stressing, so no suprise)
- Assassin Creed2= Smooth, all max except, shadow and texture quality set to 3/4 respectively
- GTA EFLC = soon
- Napoleon Total War = Soon
3dMark06(attachment)

Stock = 67xx
OCed (about to the max) = 83xx

well again, it's only as reference, u may hit higher/lower depending on the luck/batch of chips u have.

Heat Management
Quite good. on the right hand palm, it's virtually cool even at load. on the left it's slightly warm, but not overburning and uncomfortably hot. I did some Folding@home, GPU folding (card OCed 740/850), whole chassis doesn't heat up that much except for the heatsink area off course. card stays around 70-72C @ room temperature with normal ceiling fan.

Battery Life
Around 3hours Wifi+power saver setting. Well, not bad for a 17". It's meant as a deskstop replacement.

Is this laptop for you?
Simple ask yourself, if you're looking for deskstop replacement, and do not mind a 17.3", this is an excellent option to go. why? for below 3k, u get a gt330m, above average chassis, and dell's exceptional after sales service. Off course, there are trade off with the physical size. Battery life and portability is compromised.

IF battery life/portability are priorities, this model won't fit u well

Dell Vostro Competitor
TBC

@herofire86

As far as I know, the video you showed was the old vostro products which had horrible review, this is the new line of Vostros. I was really shocked with how the guy was treated, it was really disappointing to see a consumer being treated that way, it doesn't matter customer or business owner. Hanging up is like totally unethical, especially when the guy requested to speak to the manager. Well I'm alright with mine so far, most of its customizable. The only issue is getting used to the natural resolution.

In the video the specs for the screen was 15" WXGA. Whereas Vostro 3700 is 17.3" High Definition+ Wide LED Anti-Glare Display. tongue.gif

Well, 6.7k for 3dmark is already nice...this is default driver i guess, change to modded ones maybe can get 7+k in 3dmark nod.gif..

Well, those score are just for benchmarking & references nod.gif..need to play some games and do some high setting to see if the GPU can handle how much brows.gif

Overall its satisfactory, especially for a desktop replacement. The feel of its simplicity and sleek design combined with smooth performance and a 17" screen its quite satisfying. But the speakers are somewhat weak, maximizing the volume with heavy bass would definitely blow it eventually, so its best you get those mini laptop sub/speakers or a simple headphone. I need to get a bag to suite its size with everything else I have to bring along for college. Any suggestions? I was thinking of buying a skate bag because the space it provides is ridiculous! So adding a laptop sleeve to avoid scratches and voila!

And about exposing the exterior, forgive me for not having sufficient tools for it, although its just a small screw driver. tongue.gif
Can I get it at a hardware store? I'll try it tomorrow.

When I was benchmarking/multi-tasking it heated up to an average of 32-34c which in opinion; is quite good. But I haven't stressed it for hours yet, but so far the ventilation is quite good. I was doing all that while I was on my bed. tongue.gif

About the shipping process, the dateline given is just the first estimate for delivery, it may be sooner than that, or may be later. So you won't know unless you're persistent enough (with patience) to constantly update on your order status.

Because when I ordered mine, which was on the 10th of March. They received the payment and confirmed on the 13th, I was updated with the shipment tracking on the 15th where it stated that it would take 3 to 4 weeks till delivery, with much dismay it estimated around the 7th/9th of April; forgive me if my calculation is wrong. But the main idea is, I was supposed to wait longer. As I anxiously waited, at about 2 to 3 days after the update I was given new info, which stated that it was going to be shipped on the 31st, a week earlier than expected. Again, I waited, then on last Tuesday, the most fortunate happened; I received an SMS stating that my Dell was to be delivered on the 24th between 11am-2pm. To my utmost surprise, their shipping company, SkyNet arrived at my gates at exactly 9am. Thus began the story of my Dell Vostro 3700! icon_rolleyes.gif

Take your time, no worries. the interior is somewhat important for me as it's like showing others how great your car's engine is tongue.gif . I've read the quick manual from web that there are more than 1 vent so clearing heat would be faster thumbup.gif .

That's their usual way to estimate as they add 1 more week to the actual delivery date to avoid any mishap happen. I've ordered my adapter last time and they gave me a 1 week later date, which they said it's a bit slow since it'll be send from Japan(Not sure it's true or not tongue.gif ) but I received it in 3 days, early morning in my office nod.gif .

Wouldn't think so as both display as a different car. One is a solid build with elegant design which also has a nice GC. While the other one would be less solid but with a smart/nerd design and still it possess a power to wow audience, with a lesser price tag nod.gif .

Mobility for Vostro 3700 is inadvisable, like piscesguy said, unless you're a big person, weight wouldn't be an issue for bringing around. But due to its size you'd need sufficient space for everything else when you're at a sturbucks/Mc'ds etc. Unless you're fortunate enough to find sufficient space for everything everywhere you go. tongue.gif
I only intend to bring it to college mostly and maybe to any cafe if needed, which I can imagine the hassle looking for a table wide enough for the laptop and everything else.

But if you're not willing to go through the hassle go for a 14/15"

The only reason I bought this laptop because I find the value for the pricing is reasonable. thumbup.gif

Yup, I definitely agree that Asus has the potential to expand and gain recognition, the service is known to be good. Their laptop build is ideal for pricing and they also provide high performance laptops and the first with USB 3.0! FTW!

Hey
Just stopping by, only Forum I found discussing the Vostro 3700 - hope you don´t mind.

I´m quite happy with mine, but do have the impression that the display is very very contrast sensitive in vertical direction .... viewing only slightly from above kills contrast totally, everything washes out.
Since this is my first big notebook (only had a Samsung NC10 Netbook with great screen so far), I don´t know if I´m too picky here and this is quite normal in this price range.

I would be very glad if you could give me your impressions on this. Greetings

Typical TN panels' very narrow angle for viewing.... though there are some with with wider range

Hey

Thanks for the replies - I know that TN panels always have this problem. In this case though, its not a narrow angle, the image changes even when i move quite a little bit in vertical direction.
But ok, even this sounds to be normal ... guess I have to live with it.

@staszek - in my opinion, this notebook is very quiet ... I use it under full load with BOINC in the background, and even then it´s quite ok for me. Just a deep fan whirling, no ´noise´.
Although core temps go up to 68°C, still have to find out if this is ok. But still, very satisfied in this regard.

Yeah, the screen issue is true. Move a little and there goes the viewing, but I don't think its much of a problem. The noise for the laptop is very mild, the only noticeable sound is when I run a DVD and thats pretty much about it. Btw my laptop runs at 34-36°c average. As I said before, for the price of 3k, its worth every buck! rclxm9.gif

PICTURES, PICTURES, PICTURES...... of the internals PLEASE, thank you. Dell's slow in putting the service manual online for 3700 (too new).

just a (small) philips head screw-driver on two screws holding the cover close... it'll not void your warranty....

Did anyone tried taking a peek inside their 3700 yet?

2 important requirements for me

You just ordered yours during weekends is it? Yup, you'll have to wait till monday. Remember, as a customer you have every right to enquire politely for your status! Thats the very purpose of the Dell hotline!

Haven't been playing around with the laptop much guys, still a bit caught up on my weekend. *pfft*
So many things to do on such short notice. But do check out the front page for any updates.

@Spectre
I'm not so sure about that, but if you're planning on paying through credit card, you can always get update on your credit balance through phone call right? And it also depends on which bank you're under.

@lawtm
Well since you've got a bank account, if you have enough cash in it for the laptop you want, then just do a bank draft. It doesn't matter where you stay, Dell will provide their services, call their toll free number for assurance! biggrin.gif

I found a great bag for selection and the price is quite reasonable. Can't remember the brand though. tongue.gif

But the one I found suited my taste quite well, the look was very minimalistic and quite techie, the compartments provided was more than sufficient, the bulkiness was well shaped to minimize the look of the actual size, and for something like that to cost less than RM200 is a value by in my opinion. thumbup.gif

Honestly, I haven't been using it constantly. It was meant for bringing around. But I can't do that without a bag, I don't have anything which fits it. So for now I'm still on my desktop. Been really caught up with things within these past few days. *pfft*

But I'm perfectly comfortable with it actually, satisfied with the purchase, the performance so far is satisfying. Like I said before, I'll say it again. Its worth every penny! I hope it does for those who've gotten theirs too! thumbup.gif

I would like to say that this laptop is simple in term of design, not as heavy as other said, big, and great performance.

Not much features as hp laptop but overall is good.

The only problem right now is to find a big laptop beg to fit in my dell vostro lolx....

Have to agree on kevafk. For sufficient space for your 17" its wisest to look for an inch or so extra to avoid not being able to fit your Vostro or any other 17" laptop.

I wrote about the Everski laptop bag on the first page, check it out.

Do share us your choices of laptop bags which can fit so we'll have more options to choose from.

One thing to note, when looking of back-pack.. diagonal it's 17.6 inch (18+), but with 16:9 ratio, the width (back-pack) is similar to older 16:10 or 5:4 notebooks at 15 inch. It's the height (of the back-pack) that must fit some 41cm for this notebook.

Its user preference, can't say which is the best. Each brand provides their line of quality laptops for a certain price, each model suites the needs of different individual needs. So far I'm very happy with my laptop. For 3k I got decent specs, so for me the outcome of Dell Vostro 3700 was really great for my limited budget, or not I would have gotten an Acer Aspire 5974 i7. tongue.gif

I've met the backpack guy today and finally got a backpack that fits the vostro lol. I bought the Deuter Gigant laptop backpack, in terms quality i own a LoweAlpine 70L backpack.. I find Deuter's quality 1 grade lower but compare with other decent backpack it is ok. Deuter Gigant comes with 32x40 cm laptop compartment dimension which sounds like it just fit nicely with no room to spare but surprisingly there's a lot of room to spare, there is 1 inch between the laptop and zipper so it wont scratch the laptop. You even fit in with sleeve for extra protection. The backpack is a 32L so is quite a big one. For me the backpack its ok.. it feels good, well built and big compartments. Other than that prolly the price, abit too pricey for some people.

http://www.outdoorgb.com/p/deuter_gigant_daypack/

*Note* He has another brand Everki. The only Everki backpack will fit nicely prolly the Everki Beacon. It has 18.1' laptop compartment or something and quite reasonable price. Quality hmm Deuter abit more solid but thats for me. Better go visit him and check it out yourself ;p.. Here's the website :-

http://www.fashion-origin.com/

hope it helps

@kevafk
Yeah, the Deuter brand is kinda out of my budget so I'm going for the Everki Beacon. Hopefully I'll be buying it by Monday evening. Noticed the Everki thread in the garage sales a few days ago, I dealt with fashion Origin yesterday. I posted the event on the first page biggrin.gif

@miahahaha
How to I contact a mod btw? been wondering ever since. tongue.gif

That's because Vostro 3700 has higher resolution, 1600x900
If you decrease it to 1366x768, it would perform much better than HD5470...

It took me about two weeks for the whole process. Which was way sooner than expected. I'm not really sure about the shipping, things like that can be quite unpredictable, so the best thing to do; as I always recommend, is keep yourself updated with Dell or your Dell SA who dealt with you. smile.gif

And about the 64bit I think you should consult Dell Sales about that.

Dun put too much hope to get ur unit delivered before 9th of April if u order today.
Give it a leeway of 3 weeks to process and deliver.

To those who are still thinking that they want more free stuff and discounts, just wait on.
I met up with one of the re-sellers on LYN last week and we discussed about this Vostro.
She was telling me that her supplier actually quoted her 4.1k per unit as her cost, so if you guys think RM2,849 ain't cheap enough, then by all means wait till the prices go back up again...good luck...Dell ain't doing a charity here, you see a good deal, you grab it. If you just keep hoping that the deal will get better and better, then dream on.

The stock availability in PC Fair, nobody here can answer that question i guess.
And for PC Fair units, those are retail units and guess what, as i mentioned in my comment above, some dealers are actually quoting RM4.1k for these systems, so even if you do get it from the fair, unlikely u gonna get it for as cheap as online order.

Lol.. like i thought.. i dont believe this benchmark in notebookcheck.. i already play the game that notebookcheck use in benchmark. like example, far cry 2.. in notebookcheck they said ati mobility hd5470 can play 21.6fps in high setting(directx 10) resolution 1024x768. when i play it with my hd5470, i can 40~50fps with high setting+ AA with resolution 1280x768 without lag..thank god.. biggrin.gif

Hi Faiz, as i was refered to the previous webbie, so i compared from what was found there.
Even if you do put in an i5 to run with the 5470, i have no doubts that the GT330 will still outperform it.
Thats is just the fact. The proper comparison to the GT330 should be the HD5650 as discussed earlier where the HD5650 has a slight upper-hand over the GT330.

The HD5470 ain't bad for a Mobile GPU, but in this case, it's just not as good as the GT330.

Benchmarks are reliable to a certain extent only, just a guidance.
Lets just keep this discussion back on the V3700 which runs on a Gt330 here.
Anyway, i'm still waiting to see more laptops featured with the HD5870 mobile, still prefer ATI over the green camp... tongue.gif

Well the only free thing I got was the Color change I guess, because during the time I made my order, the color option wasn't available. I did the one thing that all customers have the right to do, I requested/inquired for something and I got the color change. The SA agreed and I wasn't charged a single cent for it. My Dell Vostro i5 340M was upgraded with additional RAM to 4GB and changed the hard drive to 500GB which amounted to RM3077. biggrin.gif

Wow, that'll burn a hole in your wallet. Well if you're willing also go for the i7 processor then. Consult a sales assistant through the Dell hotline. smile.gif

Upgrading from 4GB to 6GB already cost RM4xx, HDD you need to talk to the SA. If you really interested, just call Dell rather than asking questions which we can't answer.

4gb/stick can cost around RM 400-500, 1TB HDD is still not in the size of normal 9.5mm, which most likely not compatible with Vostro 3700, let alone the availability of the hdd...

Lol.. like i thought.. i dont believe this benchmark in notebookcheck.. i already play the game that notebookcheck use in benchmark. like example, far cry 2.. in notebookcheck they said ati mobility hd5470 can play 21.6fps in high setting(directx 10) resolution 1024x768. when i play it with my hd5470, i can 40~50fps with high setting+ AA with resolution 1280x768 without lag..thank god..  biggrin.gif
*
i dont think notebookcheck when conducted those fps ratings. they included the processor. processor plays a big role in playing games too and raising its performance

Yeah, the bag is quite big actually, so it wouldn't suite well with people who have small frames. The padding is alright, not exactly the best but it suites its purpose. smile.gif

@lawtm

It fits perfectly well and is also provided with plenty of space, the compartments are actually spacious, I didn't take a picture of the insides which can open fully for a better view, I'll do so when I'm free. tongue.gif
The price tag for the laptop bag is RM199, which is quite a good deal. If you're interested I put the dealers 'Garage Sale' link on the front page.

@sabrateur

Yup, but 64bit is only available with Windows 7 Professional at the cost of RM207. I wonder if you can ask for a different choices of Windows 7 edition 64/32 from the Dell hotline, has anyone benefited from the generous help of a Dell SA? biggrin.gif

The current price with promotion is still the same, except added with new 'Color Kits' option which wasn't available when I purchased mine. ^^
I'm wondering if anyone managed to get theirs built in with a back-lit keyboard feature?

UPDATE: All Dell 3700 buyers who purchased their units from 18th March onwards(not sure about members who bought it earlier) will need to wait for a period of 1 month(estimated end of April) to complete their builds and delivery. So do update with your SA to see if you want a refund or willing to wait.

Sad news indeed. I just received the call from the Dell that due to the LED screen part shortage, later buyers(including mine cry.gif ) will need to wait for the next shipment of parts which might arrive around 22nd April, means you'll be getting your unit by the end of month.

Was hoping my dream 17 inch multitask notebook will arrive on time... sad.gif Anyhow, I've went around lowyat with some of the nice specs within my budget and I think I'll be getting the Lenovo Y460 since it has power specs and I usually hook up my laptop to the 22 inch LCD so the 14 inch Y460 is still ok(just no numpad....).

If the N82Jv is in within your budget and you want a moderately high gaming machine. I would say, by all means, cancel it hahaha laugh.gif

Its smaller, lighter and has better specs but at the expense of extra cash la cry.gif
The only prob I think you will have is that the N82Jv would be very popular and maybe need to order or wait oo rclxub.gif
If its me, I would opt for the N82J drool.gif drool.gif

Maybe you can convince him with a "IBM" laptop, hehe. Only lack on Y460 is the USB 3.0 and screen reso. Warranty you can upgrade, N82jv hasn't arrive yet, JBL speakers on Y460(if you do care, hehe) and you can get it now. nod.gif

It'll do the trick on your dad mostly. But for tech guys, you'll know the last 4 companies(except Gateway) have been selling more laptops than the top 4, hence more faulty rate smile.gif.

The charts shows malfunction rates which is in percentage so I don't think the the amount of laptops sold will affect the overall results. That's what I think la rclxub.gif
Company X sells 10 laptops, 1 out of 10 is faulty = 10% faulty
Company Y sells 1,000,000 laptops, 1,00,000 out of 1,000,000 faulty = also 10% faulty
I may be wrong though icon_rolleyes.gif

The only thing I am doubtful of the results is HP. Perhaps because of taking Compaqs into account which is why HP came last cry.gif
I kind of like HP T____T

Well, you've seen the page has already written estimate 3-4 weeks and it's still pre-order stage so if you can wait for it then it'll be OK. If not, then might as well look for other options.

worst than tat

'Estimated delivery date is extended by 15-20 days.'

3-4weeks + 15-20days.
could be worst if it's specifically 'working days' excluding weekend

worst case, close to 2months

You might be right on the percentage count, but I'm not sure the result it's for US only or international. Of course they'll add Compaq since it's under their hood, hehe laugh.gif .

I won't mind waiting for 2 months really, since this laptop is the best bang for the bucks.
I don't think they'll be any 17" soon that will be a challenge to this, maybe Acer has something on it's sleeves.

Seems to me like Dell is facing issues with probably high demand of the new lineup of Dell Vostro. For those who are still waiting and have decided to wait it out, do be patient and as I always say, kindly receive and request updates with your Dell Sales Assistant which you dealt with previously. For those who are unsure of who they were, feel free to ask assistance from the hot-line provided by Dell. Patience and consistency might help out. biggrin.gif

Well, this problem also occurred for Dell Studio 15 as for high demands of the model..my guess would be Vostro 3700 is getting a lot of attention because of its superb spec and price drool.gif...patience is virtue, but still if can wait for it then maybe can opt for Asus N82Jv or maybe Acer TimelineX 4820TG which will be coming in soon icon_idea.gif

After been using it for 6 days, i noticed that the quality of material built is quite bad. You need a lot of caring to keep this laptop quality.
Just now i went to pc shop again to buy 2 x universal keypad protector + 2 pieces of transparent laptop skin just to cover almost whole laptop lolx....

But im still love this laptop as its the cheapest 17.3 inch laptop i ever found so far for this few years (first hand one...)

True... But some people do have their choice to stop and get another option/opinion. I'll be getting Lenovo Y460 by next week, with i5 540M, 4GB D3, 500GB HDD, Win 7 HP 64bit and 1GB HD5650. Really looking forward to see the benchmark if I tune the profile to performance and with some tweak to change GC to a HD5730...

Yaya, agreed, its for long term~ How much was it?
Will the skin prevent heat from being dissipated?
Vostro shouldn't be too bad in built quality~ notworthy.gif

"cant tahan our finter/ hand sweat" meaning the material will corrode? OMG.... my old M100 was like that, the whole skin got corroded and became very very ugly cry.gif
Which is why matte and glossy surface are a little bit better even though the matte doesn't look nice whereas the glossy collects fingerprints eagerly T____T

That is why i bought 2 universal keypad protector just for redesiging and cut the shape according to the size of keypad.

Not very expensvie, RM100 enough to cover it already. The beg pack was Rm180 brand High Sierra one.

The 17.3 laptop skin does not exist in my area at least...but 2 pieces of laptop skins plus some hard work should be fine one. Hmm...my arts isnt good so lol

I wont take my own one picture as it was too ugly to show it in the public. may be some laugh from friends is fine for me lol.

to [PF] T.J. : Its true, thats the reason i went straigth to the pc shop just to look for the protectors.

From what I've known some retailers don't take Dell business class laptops like Vostro or Latitude series(not sure it's policy or no buyers...) They only have home series laptops like inspiron, mini, studio, SXPS and alienware bcoz of their relatively attractive designs.

I only know their design become very sleek when vostro v13 came out, then others follow the design pattern smile.gif. Do agree with the warranty part and configuration part too, but some potential buyers do really want to feel and touch it rather than looking at pics hehe.

I think the quality is good, if you expect it to be extra durable and rough, it wouldn't be a laptop. The important thing is to take good care of your laptop to optimize and preserve it for longer usage. Which Zaita is setting a fine example. I really do think the little things like that make a big difference. The only issue for me now is investment needed for it. Am planning to protect and preserve my laptop with any possible means. So far all I've got is my decent bag, which will have to do for now. smile.gif

+1 to Zaita! I'd love to see you post pictures of it so I can get a fine example. thumbup.gif

because my knife is not sharp enough to cut the egde, but if you look at it from normal view, it just fine. and about those bubbles that you saw, it was quite hard to make a clean and smooth and flat cover using transparent one if u dont have any skills.

If I'm seeing correctly, you've actually sticked 2 tapes on the touchpad buttons right? Actually that's a very good idea, I did that on my previous M100 too. The only bad thing is that dust/ sweat- materials (laki?) will tend to accumulate on the sides of tapes which make cleaning necessary~
Well, everything has its pros and cons though haha~
Very good effort bro, if only everyone loves their laptop as much as you icon_rolleyes.gif

Actually i didnt really take care of it as you only have to do it one time then enough already. And for the caring purpose, you may want to sell it again next time lol.

It's pointless to keep many laptops :-S

And congratz of moving in to notebook spec discussion!!

W00t! Yeah, finally moved the thread. Thanks a bunch to the mod involved! thumbup.gif

2-3 years of laptop life span is alright I guess. Within that span of time you'd have enough for a new one. Its always good to take good care of your things to appreciate its value. smile.gif
All the more reason if you have intentions of selling it off, let it be in good condition! icon_rolleyes.gif

not really,it depend on the person and the type of bagpack that you use, i bought a everki beacon too...it feels okay, not that difficult to move around. it does make you like ninja turtle(carring a shell on the back) kinda cool rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

ya...thanks to your review , i got that cool bagpack. im not sure where the sound comes from but its from the right side of the lappy...

pretty satisfied with the gaming graphics( for me) run modern warfare2 at 60 fps with 2x anti aliasing.

reading documents are very pleasing....

fingerprint sensor works great...easy to detect without hassle

one thing im not sure is configuring the shock resistance hdisk....when checked at device manager, it doesnt mention anti-shock or something...go to control panel, check on sensors also says no sensor detected on system...

Yeah! Congrats to those how've just gotten their Vostro 3700! I can't seem to upload any thumbnail pictures for the thread at the moment due to the upload issue in LYN. As for the FreeFall Data Protection, you can locate it under your 'All Control Panel Items' But it only allows you to either enable or disable it. tongue.gif

If compared with my previous hp pavilion one fingerprint, i rate 80% for dell vostro 3700. the pavilion series one fingerprint is damn sensitive and accurate smile.gif
and about the high pitch one sound, i noticed that too but not that obvious. it occurs only when u watching / listening to a movie/song in a max volume

Yup! Definitely get headphones/external speaker for your laptop for better sound experience. The Vostro 3700 speaker isn't really that good for me. Planning to get one of those external sound cards for a better sound source! For now just using my comfy headphones, the bass setting is kinda funny for Vostro too. tongue.gif

Wow! Great tip to extend battery usage, especially when you plug it in a lot, so you wouldn't have to take it off each time you're plugging it.
Thanks a lot for the info man! thumbup.gif

you r welcomed smile.gif

yeah, i manage to create a start-up script, but after think back, i thought that a shortcut to that application will be more appropriate......since sometimes you will require the lappy to charge battery (so automating process all the time to disable charging will cause another hassle when you want to charge)....the shortcut to the application should be somewhere around

C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\battery.exe

What settings did you put? Does it gets choppy at some point (if high/med)

We should put up a member list of Dell Vostro 3700 owners...

BTW is the window 7 original? Would it be a lose for me if i were to ask my friend to give me "all 8 window 7 type" into my laptop? -,- He can do it lawl.

most of the game i use auto setting... so all games run mostly at high quality, one thing that been lower down is resolution, you cant have 1600x900 resolution at high quality/med...

of course the windows 7 is original (home basic 32 bit) check under your battery slot and you will see the sticker with serial there... a good practice is if you going to do some major changers/ in this case change windows, its better if you "clone" your system first.... if somethin goes wrong you can always revert to original state

Yup, the method given is the proper way to do it. thumbup.gif
Partitioning isn't so hard, just google for a guide and follow the steps thoroughly and you'll do fine.
Which is how I found out how to partition/combine a hard drive. smile.gif

Hey guys,

wondering if this lappy is fully or partially made by aluminium? Any owner(s) care to share? Which area is covered by aluminium to be exact?

Considering vostro 3400 vs acer 4740G. If Vostro is made by aluminium then i dont mind spending extra for better quality (compared to ABS plastics)

Thanks.

Thinking of getting a Vostro 3400. I read that quite a number of owners here ordered it through phone. I was wondering is there a difference in price if I order it through phone from the SA, rather than order it from the website?

If talk to SA, can get any bargain or extra free gifts?

I've tried to bargain with SA.. but they dont really entertain me, but prolly depends on which sales person u talking to.. i tried to get a free bag but failed tongue.gif but they gave me RM150 rebate voucher coz i ordered 1 day b4 the promotion, so she said im entitled. Not sure about other items, reduce price i highly doubt it.

about the keyboard, yeah its feel normal at least not the best feeling when we use touch it and use it. and about the audio, i think its really quite nice after using for awhile now. no problem so far and i personally feel that it can produce much higher volumn than 14.1 inch. smile.gif and the last time we can view 720hd without any problem biggrin.gif love the display so much

Guys, I'm planning to get another few units of laptops.

If you were me, would you choose the Aspire 5745G or Dell Vostro?

Assuming that the Vostro configuration is this:

*PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ i5 430M (2.26GHz base, up to 2.53GHz, 2C/4T, 3MB L3)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows® 7 Professional 64bit (English)
SECURITY SOFTWARE TREND MICRO™ INTERNET SECURITY (English)-24 months
DISPLAY 17.3” High Definition+ (1600x900) Wide LED Anti-Glare Display
MEMORY 4GB (2X2G) DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM, 2 DIMM
HARD DRIVE 320GB Hard Drive, 7200 RPM
VIDEO CARD Vostro 3700 Nvidia® Geforce™ GT 330M, 1GB Graphics

For the total of RM 3,175.00

Aspire 5745G has
i7 720QM
4GB DDR3
500GB HDD
15.6" HD LED
GT330M
HomePrem x64

Cost: RM 3,680

I already bought two units of Aspire 5745G, I find it satisfying but maybe Dell have better quality perhaps? =)

my only advise is very simple..whats ur purpose of a laptop? if u don mind 17.3", do giv a try. 17" is definitely less portable

in tat case, i would assume that portability is not the priority.
since u've mentioned the purpose, i think the dell would be suitable.

nope. FN+F2 = only shows the battery status. to disable / enable charger, u hav2 go to the dell battery meter in power options. Or u can access it try right clicking on the battery meter at the taskbar. vostro can auto shut off charging once it's fully charged

Okay..now I managed to cancel my Studio15..but there's a problem..

Currently Dell is offering a 3 Year Next Business Day On Site Service at RM229

But when I wanna upgrade my warranty, it states
"3 Yrs Next Business Day Onsite Service [add RM 299.00]
Add RM299 and Upgrade to 3-Years Limited Warranty (Next Business Day On-Site* Service)"

Any idea what's going on? Too bad its already 7pm and their customer service is closed..

Zaita,
i did update the nvidia driver too last week, and my system is fine. try to connect to external monitor and see whether its the driver fault , or the screen itself. have you contacted dell?

Woah, thats quite bad. Since you've reformatted/reinstalled the concerning drivers I suggest you contact the Dell Customer support. I updated my Video card a few weeks back and thankfully it didn't end up like this. :|

And I'm just curious, is this RM117 3-years CompleteCover a promotion or it's just a normal price?

My sales assistant said:
RM 117 is normal price for Vostro.

ok, i finally manage to solve it after 5 hours...phew..
chat with their international technician and told me to do a self diagnostic test for hardware. turn out ok, so he told me to reinstall OS, and that SOLVED THE WHOLE THING.

but i was still upset at the fact that it is new and i need to reinstall.

just now was playing farmvillie game at facebook. i notice that at the first 10 minutes the labtop fan was very silent n after another 5 minutes the fan started to increase its speed. the sound very noticeable. Cpu usage went up from 5% to 34%. no other program running except the browser. Is this meant that this is a sign of turbo boost?

turboboost activates itself. i have similar processor, using dual screen at one screen I put CPU-Z, GPU-Z, AMD clock tool, and another is my game screen.

whenever it detects high load(or medium high load) it will automatically be 2.53GHz, while normal usage is at 2.27GHz... and idle is at 1.33GHz. (sometimes I got 1.337GHz - 1337! L33T!!! hahaha)

1.It comes with how many SATA HDD bays?
2.Is it easy to access the CPU and GPU HSF?

subjective question. again, depend on the game requirement itself. Even some deskstop struggling with games like Bad Company2. I would say, once overclocked, probably around the same performance as 5650
