But I hear the top rooms are pretty good?
*
nop, just have an air cond installed and you have your own bathroom...the room area is the same as those sharing bathroom, but then with sharing bathroom, it actually gives you more space for the room itself since the bathrooms are connected instead of inside of 1 room, hope you get what I mean smile.gif

So is it the same?

I've read the first page and learned that accreditation isn't that important in Malaysia but is the Masters of Engineering in Nottingham recognized by the engineering boards of Malaysia?

Also, for those that are studying there, how did you guys settled the financial need to study there? (I'm assuming you guys aren't filthy rich)

How much is it to live there every month? Inclusive of accomodation, food, entertainment etc.
*
Assume one meal = RM5 (very common) * 3 meals (maximum lah. if skip brekkie then lunch or dinner can eat better) * 5 days (1 week) * 4 weeks = 300

Accommodation = 450 (average lah. Some some 435, some 465, some dunno what, depends on where you stay).

Entertainment = optional.

Conservative calculation = RM750.

If single ensuite bathroom w/ AC, accommodation = 650, then expenses = 950.

Ppl here settle either by parents sponsor, PTPTN or scholarship.

1. There are locals and there are foreigners
2. This im not sure, but my lecturer once told me that for engineering, if MEng is recognised, then MsC is too
3. Yes, common one is engineering maths in year 1, are the same..but that also depends on the class size, if the students for, lets say chem eng is too big, then dont need to share, but if both classes of students can fit into one, then yeah they can share...most of the time chem eng no need to share, becoz there are always a lot of intakes taking chem eng
4. Generally speaking, yes
5. We have basketball courts, tennis courts, squash courts, badminton courts, swimming pool, a football field, a gym, what else...... the gym itself, i went there in year 1, didnt go back since coz it was quite a mess...but i dont know now
6. Well in year 1 u have fluid mechanics, some organic chemistry, and also thermodynamics...in year 2 there's thermodynamics again...not sure bout year 3, but in year 4 there's higher level of fluid mechanics...i would say it's pretty even, maybe more onto chemistry? but then again chemical engineering is much more than just a chemistry/physics course
7. For year 1 students, it's advisable to stay on campus..but if u have a car, then i personally prefer to stay off, the rent is much cheaper..
8. Decent is probably the right word, nothing more... some prices are acceptable, and some are not.. the stall at the back of the cafeteria, would charge higher like rm8-10 for a plate
9. this im not sure
10. this im not sure
11. 70 and above
12. yes..the engineering course here is very good, perhaps one of the best in the country...but i personally regretted, coz i could have gone to curtin which is just driving distance away from my home but i chose to fly all across to here laugh.gif
13. u will have quite a lot of exposure to lab work every year...the lab itself is quite well equipped...
14. the people as in the students? like usual there will be those hardworking ones and those who slack(like me biggrin.gif )

I try to answer as best I could.

QUOTE(crane @ May 15 2011, 11:49 AM)
1. Are the lecturers in Nottingham local or foreigners? (Engineering)
- Year 1 got more locals:foreign lecturers ratio. Other years not sure. If you're malaysian you will want local lecturers coz the non-caucasian lecturers really not that good when explaining. Their accents is the problem.

2. Is the Masters in Nottingham recognized by the board of Malaysia?
- BEM only accredit 4 year course. MEng is 4 years course. Yes it is.

3. Would a student doing chemical engineering and another doing electrical/mechanical share any same class?
- The only common module I saw was Engineering Maths. And this is in Year 1. I know my Mech mix with Civil for Eng Maths. Dunno for Chem.

4. Are the cocuricular active in Nottingham?
- This is very optional. One can be extremely active, or extremely inactive. The clubs are there to be joined. Extra curricular activities are not enforced by the school. It's all student-organised.

6. For chemical engineering students, does the course emphasize more on physics or chemistry and specifically what physics/chemistry (Thermodynamics, Organic Chemistry, Dyanamics. Mechanics?)
- Need chem students to answer, but I'm sure there's no dynamics and mechanics in their modules. Thermo and fluids sure got.

7. Is it more advisable to live on campus or off campus nearby?
- Depends. First year better stay on-campus coz 2nd year will kick you out already, unless you're foreign student.

8. Are the meals there decent? Not too expensive is it?
- Depends. It's not shit, but it's not gourmet style cooking either. I would say there're nicer foods outside of campus. Price is considered above par in the town of Semenyih/Broga. Would say is about Sunway price.

12. Honest opinion, is it a school worth going where you feel if you've learned a lot? (Engineering)
- I dare say it's one of the best if not the best engineering schools in the country (or the world, even). But I've never been to other universities before so... lol. The facilities are there to aid your learning, so any failure to excel is purely the student's fault. This has been made very clear to every student here.

13. Are there alot of hands-on projects given to play with? How are the academic facilities there? (Lab, Resources for project, etc.)
- Yes there're lab sessions and projects to do. Academic facilities are top notch (i dunno what you mean by this, but I'll take it as I felt).

14. How are the people there? (Their attitude, work ethics, will to excel, intelligence, competitiveness, confidence etc)
- Generally the foreigner students are more casual. They have a higher 'tidak apa' attitude then locals. I should say they excel in other aspects of academics. They are better with hands-on stuff like they do 3D modelling better. Their theoretical knowledge is a bit insufficient if compared to locals. The better local students are serious(er) about their studies. Of course there're the portion that is concerned with alternative aspects of life.

I believe if it's not needed, they wouldn't even put there.

Just to play safe, include it in your application. It's better to stick with whatever that is stated on the website.

And just a reminder, once they decide that you are eligible for the programme you applied for, a preliminary offer email will be sent to you. This is NOT the Official Offer Letter. It's just a beta-release. You'll need to remit RM1000 as acceptance fee (it's part of your tuition fee) to secure your place, and confirm that you intended to study there before you are given a Official Offer Letter.

And just one more page to 125. Is anyone doing the v4 page? If not, I'll gladly take the honour of doing it. biggrin.gif

Well thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.
Do alot of people graduate with 1st class honor?
Also, how many people are there in a class?
Is Curtin better?

So how much is the rent to stay off campus? Did you do your own laundry and stuffs?
Basically how much is your expenses a month?
Which is the place student usually stay? What facilities does it come with?

Oh and for the application, will there be an interview? Does everyone that applies get Nottingham?

And to be honest, I haven't made up my mind to which engineering course to study. Mechanical or Chemical.
My A Level grades are as followed
Mathematics A*
Further Maths A*
Physics A*
Chemistry B

Reason I'm considering chemical engineering is because I'm good at physical chemistry and organic chemistry but terrible at inorganic chem. Also because there's high demand for chemical engineers.

What are the starting salary like for Nottingham freshgrads?

oh even if you are good at chemistry or not it doesnt really matter... studying chemical engineering is a different from studying chemistry, chemical engineers are not chemist... in fact that's always the general misconception about chemical engineering... same goes to mechanical, some people equate it with being good in physics... so my advice is dont make a decision based on that

well imo of course on what you want to see yourself do in the future, that is if you have a clear mind about it already.

does anyone know if we need to get more than 40% in both exam and coursework to pass a module or just 40% overall. For example in a 50-50 module, the mark for coursework is 65% while exam is 15%, is this still a pass?

thanks.

Overall I guess.

For your example:

50-50 split.
65% of 50 = 32.5
15% of 50 = 7.5

Module score = 32.5 + 7.5 = 40. Ngam ngam pass?

Where and what do Nottingham engineering grads usually work as?
What is the rough estimate of engineering freshgrad pays?
Is the Nottingham in Malaysia ranked the same as the UK one?
