Im still learning... but IMHO food photography generally is to make the food look delicious (although at times, one may want to shoot the bad side (or fault) of the food).

In my opinion, a good food should look fresh not pale (eg green vegis should look fresh green, not pale and rotten), colorful not bland (note: colorful does not necessarily mean many colors. It may mean for example a sate ayam look "golden"ly delicious, not pale yellow ... etc), beautifully presented not cluncky and messy (eg bits of food arranged in beautiful arrangement... not berterabur or for example in your picture, the plate look messy tongue.gif )

Maybe some other can explain more smile.gif

p/s: pls correct me if Im wrong...

Just pluck this out from my old blog entry. My friend Dennis gave some tips on food photography couple of months ago.

1. Lighting
Dennis shared us in setting white balance and getting sufficient ambiance lighting on the subjects.

2. Props
To fill in the frame as a compliment to the main subject.

3. Be Quick
Food are definitely look good when it was served, thus being quick is a must. Nobody likes rotten food.

4. Style it
Arrange the food to make it look good is definitely a must!

5. Enhance it
This relates to lighting by utilizing creating Creative Lighting System (CLS) or remote flash.

6. Get down low
Look for the right angle, preferably lower angle down to the subject level.

7. Macro
Zoom in close for details. Closing up to the subject is part of macro pointed out by Dennis.

8. Steam
Food looks good when we can see the steam, it relates to being quick.

- Style, Enhancing, Polish of the food can be done using Olive Oil.
- Use artificial steam. To make artificial steam economically, use cotton. Wet the cotton and place it in the microwave for a minute, take the cotton out and place it behind the subject/food.
- Etc

it wont boost ur batt, unless u get extra batt... Lol....

for A550(and A300series), seriously, i find it a little overrate and pricey for the ori grip for 1 dail and 2 button, and a shutter release... just buy the 3rd party ones if u think u prefer to hold it portrait orientation. i myself felt comfy without it thou tongue.gif

there is no right or wrong way to shoot food... just, how u wan to show it...

usually i shoot wider then 'too' close up... this way, i have space to crop and recompose it.

here is an example when i shoot wide, what type of cropping i can comes up with. wink.gif (the ori picture is wider then the 1st pic, this show how much space u can work with 10mp...)

ops .... actually what I wanna say in the term of 'battery booster' was the ability to put an extra battery for enlarge the battery capacity haha looks like I misleading >.<

And is right that A300 and A500(A450 included) series battery grip for original just give the extra grip feel and tougher built compare to the 3rd party .... which I found it wasn't a big deal for having the original unless .. you really often for vertical shooting and prefer better ergonomics ....
