Im still learning... but IMHO food photography generally is to make the food look delicious (although at times, one may want to shoot the bad side (or fault) of the food).
In my opinion, a good food should look fresh not pale (eg green vegis should look fresh green, not pale and rotten), colorful not bland (note: colorful does not necessarily mean many colors. It may mean for example a sate ayam look "golden"ly delicious, not pale yellow ... etc), beautifully presented not cluncky and messy (eg bits of food arranged in beautiful arrangement... not berterabur or for example in your picture, the plate look messy

)
Maybe some other can explain more

p/s: pls correct me if Im wrong...
thanks for advice...
rugi already alot food pics taken at Acheh i rechecked was underexposed & not suitable color..

Just pluck this out from my old blog entry. My friend Dennis gave some tips on food photography couple of months ago.
8. Steam
Food looks good when we can see the steam, it relates to being quick.
- Style, Enhancing, Polish of the food can be done using Olive Oil.
- Use artificial steam. To make artificial steam economically, use cotton. Wet the cotton and place it in the microwave for a minute, take the cotton out and place it behind the subject/food.
- Etc
#8 . how to take the "steam" pics???
ordered something sizzling before and tried snap few pics but not getting the steam. come out like smoky only
