I've downloaded the latest OS, and am very excited to upgrade my Storm 9500 to OS 5.0. So I installed the file, deleted the vendor.xml file, and clicked on loader.exe to initiate the upgrade. Alas, I was brought to a list of 3rd party apps which I've installed on my BlackBerry Storm 9500, with no further option to upgrade my Storm 9500's OS 4.7 to OS 5.0.

Being the one who does not give up, I searched high and low online for a solution, thinking to myself as to why others have succeeded in upgrading and are enjoying OS 5.0, whereas I'm stuck without a solution?

After 2 days, I came across this post by John Clark, of BlackBerryforums.com, and it details the exact same problem as I faced, and it seems I'm not alone! There's a lot of users out there who failed to upgrade their OS!

So I tried John's method, and voila! I'm enjoying v5.0.0.425 on my Storm 9500! So I thought I'd share this in this forum, seeing that the number of BlackBerry users have increased tremendously in the past couple of months! Just note that this method does not only apply to the Storm, but is a universal method for OS 4.6 and above, in which I've helped a friend who faced the same problem upgrading his Curve 8900 to OS 5!

QUOTE
So, you downloaded the newest, latest and greatest OS for your BlackBerry and have followed all the instructions found here.

1. Download and install Desktop Manager.
2. Download and install the OS of your choice for your device.
3. Delete vendor.xml located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader.
4. Plug in BB and open Desktop Manager.

However, when you open Desktop Manager you get no prompt to update. When you open Application Loader your new OS is not listed!!

This has been plaguing people for the last few months. I've never experienced the issue because of the way I've loaded Desktop Manager but Vasco at Horizon did and he and I together figured this out. I believe we've found the issue and will explain how to fix here.

The problem lies in the new Desktop
Manager's automatic "Check for Updates" feature. This feature uses your internet connection to look for OS updates for your device from your carrier. When it does this it loads a second virtual vendor.xml file in the temp folder on your computer (Vista users look in C:\Users\Username\appdata\virtualstore.) So, even after you delete the normal one that is installed with the OS and Desktop Manager, the automatic "check for updates" feature loads another one based on the brand of device you've got plugged into the PC.

To prevent this from happening this you need to install Desktop Manager WITHOUT this Automatic Update service. Below are the steps to remove this service.

1. Go to Control Panel >Add/Remove Programs.
2. Click on "BlackBerry Desktop Software" and select "Change/Remove."
3. When prompted, hit "Next" and then you should get options for Modify, Repair, or Remove. Choose "Modify."
4. On DM 4.7 and higher, in the list of installed items, you should see "BlackBerry Automatic Update." Click the icon next to it and change it to "This feature will not be available." That should put an "X" next to "BlackBerry Automatic Update." If you are using DM 4.6 or lower and don't see this option in this list then just continue with the install and the installation will ask you a few screens later. A screen will be shown where you will be asked to check the boxes for:

A) "Start BlackBerry Desktop Manager automatically each time the computer starts."
B) "Create a shortcut for BlackBerry Desktop Manager on the Windows Desktop."
C) "Check for software updates."

Be sure number 3, "Check for software updates," is NOT checked.

5. Finish the installation.

(Note: If you're doing a fresh install of Desktop Manager, be sure and choose the "Custom" install button so that you get the prompt for what features you want installed. Otherwise all the features will be installed as normal and you'll likely run into this issue.)

Once that is complete, you'll need to go back and search your computer for vendor.xml. When you do the search, make sure you click on "Advanced Options" and make sure that you search Hidden files and folders. This is important as some operating systems create a virtual store in the temp folder that this vendor.xml file is located in. You will not find this particular vendor.xml if you don't have hidden files/folders selected for search. Once the hidden vendor.xml is deleted it won't come back if you've reinstalled Desktop Manager without the Automatic Update Feature enabled.

Now, make sure your OS is installed (you may need to install the OS again, if you actually remove Desktop Manager and then reinstall Desktop Manager again. Make sure that you delete the normal vendor.xml file LAST before updating the device.

Tip of the day: Desktop Manager is not even required for doing an OS upgrade. In the same folder as the vendor.xml file is a file called Loader.exe. Running that will run apploader without Desktop Manager. It still makes the full backup and restore, but without all the DM stuff running in the background. I use this for all my OS upgrades. Then later I connect to DM to start my BES activation.

Yes same here. Never liked to use DM.

Loader.exe is a more straightforward way as well.

Can I just ask a question. If my laptop is being used by 2 BBs, does the deletion of the vendor.xml step need to be done when I am upgrading the 2nd BB?

The above guide refers mainly to the hidden vendor.xml file, and needs to done once only.

But each time you download a new firmware and install, you'll still get vendor.xml file within the AppLoader folder.

Just delete it each time you install the new OS, no need to search for hidden vendor.xml files again.

I used my notebook to flash 4 BlackBerry's, all different models hence different firmwares.

hi...i got the same problem with my BB bold for upgrading os
just check with BB website notice that the version for celcom is 4.6 and not available for 5.0

The problem lies in the new Desktop
Manager's automatic "Check for Updates" feature. This feature uses your internet connection to look for OS updates for your device from your carrier. When it does this it loads a second virtual vendor.xml file in the temp folder on your computer (Vista users look in C:\Users\Username\appdata\virtualstore.) im wondering is this coz me fail to upgrade it?

I've flashed my BB 8900 successfully last night without any roadblocks. Didn't have to go through the procedure above so it's pretty straightforward.

Just one question, any of you having problems using Viigo? I can't seem to start Viigo as it just hang my BB. Tried reinstalling Viigo a few times but still the same case.

Which OS your BB is using? 5.0.0.411? You need to check Viigo website does the version that you are using support the latest OS?

I was thinking the same thing too. Might be your version of Viigo is not compatible with OS5?

Hmm, my guess is like what you guys mentioned. Too bad the Viigo site don't have much info on which OS it support. So I guess, just wait till they come out a newer version that can support OS5.

Does it show invalid SIM on the phone's display?

Or the device may be locked to Orange.

To check, please check the following post, by achiko.

Just download the .411 file, install it, and go through the same process to delete vendor.xml file.

Then click on apploader.exe to upgrade.

As long as it's for the Bold 9700, it should be compatible.

But remember to delete vendor.xml unless the firmware is an official release by Maxis (for Maxis sets) and Celcom (for Celcom sets).

You can try downloading .442 and flash it.

But what's stopping me is I noticed it doesn't have East Asian language support.

I'd stick with .344 until I find another firmware with Chinese language support.

I'm not sure how to backup current firmware, but you can download it again from BlackBerry's support site.

Hmm... DiGi's latest firmware is .400.

I will flash and see if there's any changes.

Anyway to check a firmware is to see the Applications section, ie. 5.0.0.400, and not the Package Version, ie. v5.0.0.633.

To those who wants to upgrade their OS and using Vista and above please delete ur vendor.xml folder too in

C:\Users\"username"\AppData\Local\VirtualStore

"username" is ur own computer user account

once in that folder search for Research In Motion folder n delete the vendor.xml there

its actually a backup made my windows security feature
thats why even u hv deleted the one in program files folder u still cant update the OS cos windows will still check from Virtualstore folder

you need to delete these two location then you should be able to upgrade the OS

hope this helps smile.gif

You can download the original OS from BlackBerry's support site.

If you want to restore T-Mobile's settings, just don't delete the vendor.xml file before flashing. smile.gif

It might, no guarantees though, cos it depends on which firmware you upgrade to.

Seriously i need help from some1. I tried upgrading my OS today.

I downloaded "9700EastAsia_PBr5.0.0_rel680_PL5.1.0.116_A5.0.0.423_Bell_Mobility_Inc " to upgrade my OS to .423 . I tried following the guides here and http://crackberry.com/blackberry-101-how-i...ating-system-os but still i couldn't understand how to use the loader.exe or even the DM.

Can some1 teach me how to upgrade them using the loader.exe? i couldn't understand anything from it.

Added on February 28, 2010, 9:37 pmOkay, at last i manage to upgrade my OS to .423 . But seems i have this problem , when i connect my BB to DM. The DM said that i have a newer version of OS and ask me would i like to downgrade my OS . Of course i press no, but in the later i couldn't check my available app in my BB. Any1 can help me on this?

Many thanks

my storm2 experience:

download your original(current) firmware which is running in your device..install it in your pc...

then install 5.0 OS(new OS) in your current OS folder...copy n replace current java folder with new OS java folder...

remove vendor.xml..then try apploader again..

i managed to upgrade bold and curve to os5.0 finally, as easy as ABC.

i guess you need a restart your machine after deleting vendor.xml before you try apploader.

*
That is not a good practice, it's always recommended to uninstall every BB OS in your PC (usually written Blackberry Device Software) before installing a new one. The same case if you want to flash multiple same model of BB, once you have done with one, re install the OS in the pc and re delete the new vendor.xml. This is to avoid "junks" being installed in your new OS, that is one of the reason when 2 devices are using the same OS, but one could have memory leak while the other one is normal.

It's not necessary to restart your PC after deleting vendor.xml, but it is a good practice to battery pull your BB right after you finish upgraded the OS (especially after you finish the start up wizard in your BB).

0.do NOT connect your BB to your PC when step 1 and 2 have not finish
1.download and install blackberry desktop manager
2.download and install blackberry device software (BB OS)
3.connect your BB to your PC, and as usual if it is a new device, windows installing driver balloon in tray will pop out, let it finish.
4.go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
5.delete Vendor.xml
6.double click Loader.exe
7.just follow by clicking next next and next

There are few ways, but the fastest one should be by installing a new OS, but when there is an option asked whether you want to autosave and restore your data, you untick that option, and after that in the next application selection window, just untick those 3rd party or any additional applications you have installed.

good luck guys smile.gif

It's a lil bit tricky, but can be done if you follow it correctly:

good luck.

Hi, i have a question regarding the Bold 9700. Is the above method by threadstarter the only method to updating device software or OS? We can't upgrade straight away from the phone itself?

.351 Is definitely not the latest. Do google around for the latest official firmware.

I'm using .586 firmware from Celcom. smile.gif

Hey Thank you very much for a wonderful guide. Just follow the steps and am sure the OS updating process will go without a hitch.

Just remember to always delete the vendor.xml before opening the loader.exe.

Thanks for this guide TS!

I've just downloaded OS from BB website for Celcom. Im not so sure which is the latest. Just take the most top one. What should I do next ? I read using DM is hard so planning to use loader. What is loader.exe ? IS it the file I downloaded ? And just run the file is it ?

Current version : v5.0.0.442
Downloaded version : 9700jEastAsia_PBr5.0.0_rel1254_PL5.1.0.165_A5.0.0.743_Celcom_Malaysia.exe (dunno version.guess 743)

reason upgrade : cannot receive mms but can send mms out.

Should i stick with old version or upgrade.

Thanks guys

yup, u are downloading the newer version of OS, the bigger last 3 or 4 digit, the newer the version it is. MMS receiving and sending might not due to OS, but the OS version upgrade is most likely due to few reason below:
1. bug improvement
2. better battery life
3. smoother run
4. just for fun.

upgrade or not is all base on ur personal "feel" or i should say, observation. if ur bb are working fine, just stick to the version. but most ppl like to upgrade, just to try the new version out.
Loader.exe is something similar to app loader in DM, but u dont have to open the desktop manager to run it. just run the file and follow the step will do.

Dont do this too often, scared it might bricked your BlackBerry one day..

i dont think reformatting the device again and again may bricked it someday. u just clear the data and replace it with a new one. anyway this is just my opinion smile.gif

Yes possible to brick if luck not yr end. Avoid reformatting the set no particular reason. Only do it if u really have to. Reformatting the set puts it on heavy stress.

Maybe forumer went to wrong folder or never plug in BB device yet for the BDM to recognise and generate the vendor.xml file

Install handset software

Now that you’ve installed the Desktop Manager and Handheld software, you’re good to go. If you’re a Mac user, you can use the device update feature in the software, but you aren’t going to be able to roam between carriers and get the latest software. As of writing this, it’s still better to be on a PC, or use a virtual Windows service like BootCamp. Double click on the .exe Handheld Software file and install it to your PC.

Plug in your BlackBerry via USB, launch the desktop software and Desktop Manager should detect that your device is able to be upgraded. Just follow the wizard that pops up, and the Desktop Manager will back up all of your contacts and emails, wipe your device, install the new operating system, and restore your data from backup. Keep in mind this process will reset many of your applications, so you might have to put in activation keys and the like back in once everything’s done.

Be warned, however, that not all developers are as quick to patch up their software as you are to upgrade yours. Any third-party apps that you had installed might not be designed for the new operating system, so you may need to pick up a newer copy if it’s available. By the same token, a new operating system could also open up some software designed to take advantage of the new features or layout.

Been having any problems with your install? Leave a comment here, and we’ll do our best to fix the issue. Also, we’ll be updating the guide as new operating systems come out, complete with the freshest download sites.

All about OS...
HOW-TO Revive a Dead Blackberry

All this presumes your Blackberry is already dead, and no amount of hair or battery pulling will get it to restart again.

PRELIMINARY
1. Take the battery out of your Blackberry.
2. Ensure you have the latest BDM properly installed.
3. Install the OS version you want your revived Blackberry to have. Once you’ve completed the procedure, you will essentially have a factory-fresh Bold so at this step, you can choose which OS you want to have in your factory-fresh Blackberry. You can choose to revert to a previous OS for example, but why would you do that?
4. And most important, use a Windows PC.

METHOD
1. Start loader.exe. You can find it at Program Files > Common Files >Research In Motion > AppLoader.
2. Connect your phone to the PC via USB.
3. When you see the loader wizard say USB-PIN: Unknown, quickly press Next. It’s important you don’t dally at this point, because if you don’t press Next as soon as you see that phrase in the info box, you’ll have to start the process all over again. Unplug from the USB, quit loader.exe, restart loader.exe, etc etc)
4. Gently insert your battery back into your phone, making sure you don’t lose the USB connection.
5. Check off all the options you want to install, then wait for the process to complete on its own. It’ll take a very long time, but the screen will keep updating on the steps as they’re finished.

And you’ll need your data backups, if any, as you’ll have to re-setup your phone from scratch.

Proper Upgrade / Downgrade Procedure

Basic Procedure (Beginners)
Backup Phone in DesktopManager.
Unplug phone and close DM.
Install new OS .exe file.
Plug phone back into PC and let drivers install.
Launch DM and proceed with update of OS.
Make sure you pick Backup Data and Apps (including Messages) during the backup!!!
DO NOT under any circumstance unplug the phone or use the PC while the update is in progress. Do not let screen saver kick in either.
Unplug and use phone ONLY once the upgrade procedure states that it's finished by the DM update software on the screen.

@dicksonbell @rattan,

This thread is on "Why won't my OS update?". It's a troubleshooting thread.

A separate thread should be created on "Guide to upgrade my OS to a Hybrid OS", as it's a guide and not a troubleshooting post. Or "Guide to Upgrade my 9700's OS to OS6".

Let me know if and when it's created and I'll help to Pin it up for easy reference.

On a side note, you guys can @sonyclie77 me on Twitter if any help is needed. I'm a Torch 9800 and Bold 9700 user.

You need to re-install your OS then your BlackBerry are back to normal...

1) Download the OS, it is better to download from blackberry website.
2) After download. install this exe file. do not run desktop manager.
3) Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader and delete vendor.xml
4) Now run your blackberry desktop manager.
5) Go to application loader . then goto update software. After it initialize your phone it shows you that recommended to update to OS5 BUT when you want to continue it will show you that "no update needed" or "you should be subscribed user to update" SO wait do not close this page.
6) go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader and run loader.exe now
7) In the list choose what you want to install.(here you will see the blackberry OS5 is ticked already)
8) Complete your install (it take some time (for me around 15 min)
9) Then your device will be restart and as it first run it take more than 10 min to start.
10) Now you have OS5 on you BlackBerry. You can check it on menu>settings>about.

I was able to do step 1 until 4, but when I reached step 5, it did not recommended me to update to OS5...I think this is because DM was unable to detect my PIN, (Device connected (PIN): None)

However I just went to step 6, and this message appeared "The Blackberry Desktop Software does not have Blackberry Device Software for the device that you have connected to the computer. Contact your wireless service provider or system administrator"

I downloaded the following OS from BB support; 9700jAllLang_PBr5.0.0_rel994_PL5.1.0.146_A5.0.0.586_Maxis.exe...is this the correct one?

yes Im using bold 9700 (maxis)...

It is on first page:

Restart your BlackBerry then try again... But you need to enable your GPS before downloading... Or you can connect to Desktop Manager and login to BlackBerry Apps World to download it...

I always recommend my forumer to install BlackBerry Maps using Desktop Manager... Just plugin and connect to Application you can tick and un-tick for apps you want and unnecessary for your BlackBerry including BlackBerry Maps. That is the easiest way...

Follow this guide carefully:

Upgrading Procedure for an Official OS release is as follows:

1. Download the OS and install it on your PC. (Make sure you have already removed any older OSes you have installed on your PC by going to Add / Remove Programs in Control Panel)

2. Delete the vendor.xml file (located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader)

3. Backup your 3rd party applications ( optional recommended step )

4. Connect your BlackBerry to your PC and right click on a file named Loader (located in the same place where you found the vendor.xml > C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader\Loader.exe) and select '' Run As Administrator ''

5. Follow the prompts and make sure you select the languages and applications you wish to be installed.
The Loader will backup and restore your data by default.

Still Having Issues !!?
I would recommend using BBSAK to Upgrade, so

- Uninstall the OS(s) you already have installed on your PC
- Delete the folder (research in motion) in ( c: \program files\common files\research in motion )
- Restart your PC

Thanks for the guide. I still unable to upgrade to OS 5 though. However, I tried downloading OS 4.6 and updated my device. The DM is able to detect the new update. So my problem now is that my DM is able to detect OS4.6 but not OS 5. I am using Bold 9000 btw. Any solution for this? Thanks in advance.

I tried using BBSAK to upgrade, can detect my device and able to load the OS installed in the PC but unable to update to OS 5. Only OS 4.6 can be updated. Therefore, I pressed the 'Add' button in the application loader to upload and when I choose the .alx files, it says 'This application is not compatible with your device and cannot be loaded'.

Remember to delete the Vendor.xml files. If still can't then uninstalled Desktop Manager and reinstalled again. Suspect the loader driver are missing that why can't detect. Which OS Windows you are using now?

I did not see the Vendor.xml file. I checked online, it says that if I have BBSAK in my computer, it will auto-delete the vendor file. I reinstalled my DM and restarted my computer. It still says the same thing when I tried to update using the application loader or BBSAK. I am using Vista.

Yes you can. Just follow the instruction and guide on how to download and install it..

Your DM dont allowed to download because your set are not original and it is an AP Set...

Is better to use Windows for update..

Mac is not recommended...
Yes you can. Just follow the instruction and guide on how to download and install it..

Your DM dont allowed to download because your set are not original and it is an AP Set...

Hi all, I just got the situation like above. Led blinked with red colour.
BBSAK unable to detect it, but windows can.
App loader can detects it, but nth to be add when stepped to device application selection.
So I choose Add at top, and look at the os5 that i dl-ed and installed, but it shows "This application is not compatible with your device and cannot be loaded. 2 kind of OS5 tested,"9000EastAsia_PBr5.0.0_rel1682_PL5.2.0.93_A5.0.0.1036_CSL_Limited_customers.exe" and "9000M_PBr5.0.0_rel1728_PL5.2.0.89_A5.0.0.1067_AT_T.exe".

Your rom is dead and bricked. So you need to load your OS without the battery.

There is a guide on my forum on how to boot a dead BlackBerry...

Try uninstall your Desktop Manager and download the latest one. I suspect the old driver prob which make you cant connect...

Try it out and let me know successful or not?

Then your flash IC is dead, try this:

This procedure works with all Blackberrys, as far as I know, but I couldn't resist putting Bold in the title as it's happened to me twice already, both times while using a Mac to do my OS upgrade.

All this presumes your Bold is already dead, and no amount of hair or battery pulling will get it to restart again.

PRELIMINARY
1. Take the battery out of your Blackberry.
2. Ensure you have the latest BDM properly installed.
3. Install the OS version you want your revived Blackberry to have. Once you've completed the procedure, you will essentially have a factory-fresh Bold so at this step, you can choose which OS you want to have in your factory-fresh Blackberry.

It's important you don't dally at this point, because if you don't press Next as soon as you see that phrase in the info box, you'll have to start the process all over again. Unplug from the USB, quit loader.exe, restart loader.exe, etc etc)
4. Gently insert your battery back into your phone, making sure you don't lose the USB connection.
5. Check off all the options you want to install, then wait for the process to complete on its own. It'll take a very long time, but the screen will keep updating on the steps as they're finished.

And you'll need your data backups, if any, as you'll have to re-setup your phone from scratch.

Hope that helps..
