I was able to do step 1 until 4, but when I reached step 5, it did not recommended me to update to OS5...I think this is because DM was unable to detect my PIN, (Device connected (PIN): None)

However I just went to step 6, and this message appeared "The Blackberry Desktop Software does not have Blackberry Device Software for the device that you have connected to the computer. Contact your wireless service provider or system administrator"

I downloaded the following OS from BB support; 9700jAllLang_PBr5.0.0_rel994_PL5.1.0.146_A5.0.0.586_Maxis.exe...is this the correct one?

yes Im using bold 9700 (maxis)...

What is the problem you had after you successfully installed your OS??
*
I had the SIM card error/Insert SIM card message, I had this even before the OS update...So i guess its a hardware problem..

have u try the sim in other phone?

yes I did, and I even tried a different SIM card on my BB, so its definitely something wrong with the phone, not the SIM...
