I had my 1st guzheng lesson yesterday, played 2 simple songs with right hand thumb only, then another 1 with middle finger only. It's the 1st time i play gu zheng and learn to read the numbering notations, there's only 5 notes in an octave do re mi so la, make things easier and fun to play. laugh.gif

Btw, the rm5 book is actually a photocopy beginner book and 4 pieces of right hand turtle shell plectrum is rm48.

There were two people actually. The first is not more than 10 pages from the second. I guess he finally decided not to part with the guzheng 不舍得卖了.

All can be play with thumb actually. My teacher did not teach me this way. My DIY book advocates this method. The reason was to strengthen the fingers. Sometimes I play even the advance song with only one finger to develop the strength for all fingers. I borrowed the idea from "finger drill" which I heard from friends playing the piano.

Okay lah better than taking public transport (nowadays not cheap) to find a shop with turtle shell that sells for RM40.

Sifus,

I'm very happy to have found a very experienced flamenco dancer who is willing to guide me already. So..... right now focusing on that. Very very hard and a lot of things to learn and practice. Main problem is the 12 beat rhythm. We all only used to 4/4.

Have to delay learning gu zheng for now ~ See how it goes first.

Wow, flamenco dance.. cool! One must have strong rhythm sense playing with the Flamenco..

Btw, my guzheng teacher say I'm 高手. Too overpraise me.. haha. No gu zheng to practise at home, but I found a way to practise. I use a paper and draw lines representing the gu zheng strings, I "pluck the strings" on the paper. It's like playing air gu zheng.

The guzheng that I play in the music centre is shanghai dun huang brand(it costs 2.8k), personally I like the tone very much. wub.gif

I'm looking for 2nd hand guzheng, budget below 2k.

haaaaaaaaaahahaha I really want to learn it also but for now I'm practicing the guitar.

Since dancers usually work together with singers and guitarists in a flamenco show. She can guide me a lot. Really dam knowledgeable. Felt like when empire taught and showed me some stuff.

Before meeting her I was not learning the right things. For example not everything is suitable to dance with. So she gave me cd's and dvds from her huge collection and ask me practice. The rhythm and stucture of the song very different from what I usually listen to.

Just an example la: They get to take turns to be "featured" and the whole time there are a lot of freedom and the guitarist need to accompany according to what the others are doing. Most full ones last longer like 7-9 minutes because of the structure la .. but I'm not too sure about that.

This one must let you try.. the dancer's moves so handsome.

But it takes some time to get used to the singing/wailing la.

(It may feel like random stepping but actually he is following a rhythm la. I'm still working hard to internalise it"

It is genuine praise. 初级的高手. Since you have a good foundation in theory, things like tempo and note duration is a piece of cake. That is what 初级 is all about. I think you will breeze through the one octave songs really fast. The more than one octaves will take you a while to get a familiar. Then again it easy stuff since the guitar has so many strings to play the same note (more confusing and harder to get use to). 中级 is where you use the left hand techniques and both hand is advance 中级。 高级 is about playing difficult pieces like 战台风。

The ang mo version is playing spas (as in spastic) guitar. Now you are playing a spas guzheng biggrin.gif. Actually you dont need to just modify your mini 6 string guzheng lor (aka the guitar biggrin.gif)

Dunhuang at 2.8k, do you know what model? It is usually 3-4 digits with an alphabet. Ask your teacher and Subang and I can comment a bit on it.

JieXian,
rclxub.gif Your teacher is a dancer or a guitarist or both?
Anyway I look forward to the next meeting where you will show us some real flamenco.

faceless,
yeah you are right, my classical guitar background helps me a lot in learning guzheng. Strings plucking has became a natural thing for me since I practise guitar for years. I guess when using both hands (intermediate level) it would be challenging, lots of techniques involved. I forgot to check out the model of the dunhuang guzheng that I played in the music centre.

Could you tell me where is your guzheng origin and the brand? The tone sounds nice to my ears.. smile.gif

Left hand stuff not that much problem for you lah since your left hand work on the fret board. It is playing rhythm/bass with one hand and melody with the other that will be the greatest challenge. I have not attained the skill yet after more than a year of training.

My guzheng is dunhuang. Model name is "spiritual connection" base on the poem by 白居易carved on it. It has 4 digit number and alphabet but I forgot it already since it has a model name to go by.

For me, a guzheng need to have a "wood" sound. There are a lot of guzheng with metal sound. I hate metal sound. It just another Kapok not guzheng.

Faceless is right. It took me merely minutes to play GuZheng .As I already play the piano, guitar and many more instruments...it all fell in place the moment I touched the guZheng.

Though I'm nowhere at Pro level...I'm happy to be able to play popular tunes d.

A music professor once told me, "Once you done the theory it is a matter of how you lay your finger on any instruments".

You are a pro lah. You are earning a living from music. You may not play with the right techniques since you dont have a proper teacher.
