Lesson. I wanted to get my ATCL.. haha.. without a teacher, I get quite.. er.. indiscipline.. So I needed one to guide me. Just started back last week.

What is ATCL?


So got time for gathering or just do a drinking session?

Faceless: ATCL is Trinity diploma.

I very noob on music thingy. I dont even know what is trinity. Trinity from a religion point of view I know

Trinity is one of the popular music exam board which offer graded exam up until diploma level. The other exam board is ABRSM.

Trinity diploma basically got 3 level.. ATCL (Associate of Trinity College London) , LCTL (Licentiate of Trinity College London) and FTCL (Fellow of Trinity College London).

This is the exams that you can take after you finish your grade 8 basically. You prepare a 30+ mins of recital consisting of 3 pieces of different style and a programme note which will be prepared before the exam day. If I'm not mistaken, there is a presentation skills included in the marking as well, which I assume the examiner will be asking some questions as well.

So I'm currently preparing myself to sit for the ATCL. xD I'm not really ready for the exam yet though, just going to pick up back my skills and brush up my musical knowledge. But it's kinda harder to do it now since I have a full time job.

Thanks for info. This "Licentiate" sound like can open music school and teach their syllabus, correct? Can get bachelor of music with this diploma or not? If can I want to try. Maybe one day when I am done with guzheng and erhu I will go for it. Just collect expensive toilet paper in music.

thanks, well, i am still looking for guzheng, too bad i am staying in cyberjaya and no transport. So mainly looking for shop that does delivery too.
I started playing yang qin during my secondary school and quit when i come to KL for study.

Not many place in KL sells guzheng. As for Subang Area, our Subangman know a few shops that sells guzheng. If you dont mind a second hand guzheng subang maybe able to help. Just ask him nice. His is very particular about mannerism and courtesy. How much is your budget?

Guzheng is not heavy but with the box it is very heavy. Then again carrying a guzheng for long distance its weight will wear on you.

haha... basically you don't really need their 'Licentiate' to teach. Most of the time, after GR8 they will start teaching. haha..

You mean Bachelor? Erm. It's actually a different thing. I'm guessing it's like the chinese music exam? That's the 'paper' to prove your standard in music?

For a Bachelor, you may need to go to those college or Uni. But they do recognise these exam boards 'paper'. It's only part of the requirement for you to get into the course. Some of them only require gr6 or gr8 as part of the requirement beside your spm, a levels, etc etc.

Oh, and to get the ATCL, you need at least GR8 before you can sit for the exam. Or prove you are exceptionally talented.

No, it is not some chinese thingy. It is mat salleh stuff. I did mention Bachelor of Music (my school abbreviated it BMus). Your next paragraph is exactly what I mean. Actually I was hoping that you may know if people with these ATCL would get certain exemption when the want get a BMus from some University. Since this Trinity is a college so their diploma should be able to convert to degree with exemption to certain basic level courses.
For me I was thinking/assuming I may not have that much to do for a BMus if I have a ATCL. If they do give exemption then maybe they want you to some core and elective courses. I dont think I have to worry about the elective courses. I already have a double major what more elective do they want me to do? If my assumption is right then do this ATCL then do some core music course I get BMus (that make me triple major). So, I get to collect another toilet paper for Music. But the hardest hurdle is the ATCL.
