Guzheng is not heavy but with the box it is very heavy. Then again carrying a guzheng for long distance its weight will wear on you.
*
blink.gif wow.. that's much weight there, plus the stand and everything.
may i know can a new student practice with mini size guzheng, instead of the normal big size, i asked my teacher, he says that if practice with mini size, next time will have difficulty in playing the normal size. sad.gif but i do travel a lot, going back hometown during school holidays

------------------
subang, if you would allow me to call that, i just called the shop and they say they are not selling any guzheng, only western instruments.

i found out another shop, chambers at sungai wang, dont know the reputation, but still looking for free time to go there rclxub.gif

Actually, carrying guzheng to take bus/public transport is heavy. Including the stand, it is a minimum two-person's job.

Empire plays a travel size guzheng and have a regular size instrument too. I think he is most suitable to comment. But then again Empire is a multi instrument (plays more than 20) player.

For me, I had tried Empire's travel size. I find it hard to adapt. So, I do agree with your teacher. Get use to one size instead of switching from once size to another (ie during lesson use regular size, during practise use travel size). See what Empire has to say.

Ok...here's what I think:

If you travel a lot...get the baby GZ like mine. My Shanghai Angels band travel a lot all over Malaysia, Singapore, HK, macau, Indonesia and Australia. there's no way a regular sized GZ is gonna be practical in this case. Dont even think about checking in the GZ as it will 100% be damaged by those rough airport handlers.

It may not sound as great as a regular GZ...but it gets the job done...and no one has ever complained about my baby GZ. In fact...many people said it looked so cute! rclxms.gif rclxm9.gif brows.gif

its better to call them before paying them a visit..... as it might b taken home alridi
For their contact do google and u will find it.

R u sure u called the right store ? Its their Jalan Ipoh HQ. Ask for the chinese lady Manager (she might be the lady boss); as she is
the only person in the store who knows about tis piece of old wood.

Tell her u r my frd; the man who likes to ask for RODE shotgun T1 & T2 mic staying in Subang area and
wanted to buy the guzheng for RM700/=.

If she got amnesia then ask her directly about her church pastor's old guzheng.

Else do let me know I will call her.

I agree your baby guzheng dont sound too shabby. It comes down to a beginner's ability to find a good piece. This is not an easy task as they have not played enough guzheng to know what is a consider "decent" sound.

Although a guzheng is not so mobile due to its size, it is still deemed a portable instrument. Since most instruments are potable, instrument shops usually dont do delivery services. Piano seller is an exception. Moreover asking for deliver to an unknown place /outstation adds to the disadvantage. If it was in say KL/PJ the boss can just ask any of the staff interested in making the extra bucks to deliver it.

Subang's offer is not to bad. Assume you ask a mover to deliver, they will charge in that region for outstation delivery. Alternatively if you get guys like DHL or FedEx, the rate will be a lot higher. By the way my teacher charges people RM60 to tune guzheng. This is a very time consuming thing as you have 21 strings to do. The irony is I get to do the dirty job and not paid. Yes, my teacher end up asking me to do the tuning so that I get the experience. Initially it took me more than 1 hour to do it. Now I can do it in 30-20 minutes.

Lurked for a while, first time post.

My friend who play the guzheng, he can change a key to another within 1~2mins during exam or performance. He said you don't need to be a professional to be able to tune that quickly, it is very basic actually.

Basically changing the key required only moving a few bridges a little to left or to right.

I guess your friend refers to a 12 strings guzheng. Changing keys is basically moving the notes higher or lower and that involves all 21 strings. 120sec/21strings = 5.7 seconds/string. I can just imagine your friend doing it in 1 minute. Fantastic! Tune 1 string by moving bridges (we talking string under tension) in just less than 3 seconds.

U r right bru..... that's why I get Meimei more than 3 'swords' in order to minimise the changing key story.
She just need to put the other one on the stand and start off practicing if she wants.

Her SB is basiclly tune to G and I've yet to come across another song using tis key.

Her exam songs are in A & B and the other one C.

Normal practice pieces in varies.

If using one Gz then cheahlat lor.... time to change from one key to another will take more than 3hrs alridi just to practice few songs..
wat about her academic assessment end of the year.

My god! You actually tune all 21 strings? Fantastic! shocking.gif

21 strings guzheng, from D to G only move 4 bridges, G to C only move 4 bridges. Some keys will need to move a few more, but definitely not 21 strings... doh.gif

Somehow I had a feeling it was not your friend but you. You like to change only 4 strings by all means do it. I got no problems with that.
