I'm doing my master in renewable energy. You can try searching for rooms at http://perth.gumtree.com.au/, or you can post what you want there (for free biggrin.gif). It's better to call when you see phone numbers on those ads than to email - else it'll take ages to find a room. It took me 3 agonising days to find a clean room after some singaporean students left me high and dry (they kicked me out before I moved in, because apparently someone paid the rental bond before me and they didn't know about it doh.gif). Good luck!
*
smile.gif I'm doing my masters too, in communication studies! Hehe! Yea, I did search around that web but I couldn't register because it's only for those registered under Australia's telco. I emailed a few of them but no replies! Haha! Well, I'll continue searching when I get there.

By the way, I have a question about driving there, I know we could drive with our current driving license without converting to an international driving license but do I need an international license to buy a car there?

I don't want to get into trouble, so no names here. But if you go to the suburb next to murdoch (kardinya), there's really only 1 pure chinese restaurant biggrin.gif.

Edit: I went back to the restaurant to get my pay and guess what - "Oh, we don't pay for just 1 day of work." And she sounded happy saying that. My fault, my fault. Maybe I should get nasty and contact the law enforcers hmm.gif

Just pass by this thread.

I wonder if uni students in Australia do give tuition like how malaysian students do?
*
Yeap they do. Most of them are students doing double degree or have achieved at least top 10% in their year 12 examination.

Is it really hard to get a part time/casual job in Perth?  cry.gif
Asian restaurant, humiliated, care to share why?

Go and apply for McD or Hungry Jack's. They pay really well! I worked there during high school and there’s no bullying. I was given a golden tag for being one of the best employees there within a year biggrin.gif but I'm not sure if they are keen on hiring someone older than 20 y.o. except for those that open 24/7. The function staff at hotel get even higher pay average around $24/hr (Saturday) but you gotta speak good English as you’re dealing with high class customers there (met a few celebrities) anyway that's where I work during uni days.

I can tell you pretty much all the Asian restaurants are like that so don’t waste your time there. They pay cash and pay less. I was booted out on my first day too.

fast food joints and supermarkets generally don't like to employ older students, as they will need to pay full wages to them by law....teenagers are cheaper labour.....

I don't know where should I ask this but had anyone tried this?
Had anyone of you actually packed something like carton boxes as check-in luggage?
Is it possible? Cause my luggage with my clothings is already 19kg, my other luggage with my containing my daily use is 15kg.
I had exceeded the 30kg limit.

The luggage itself is 6kg, so I was planning to pack all my other stuff in a carton box.

Since I can't find any australia thread in lowyat, and this one is the most active, I wanna tumpang thread ask something biggrin.gif

I want to ask something about the banks in Australia. I heard my friend said that, until today, Australia bank doesn't have deposit machine. All transaction in or out, have to be done over the counters, and even counters will took you 2-3 days to clear and show the amount in your bank account. Is that true? @@

Also they don't use smartchip on credit/debit cards. Because using credit/debit cards require additional pin number to authorize the transaction?

So traditional?? =.=!

yes, this is commonly done, to maximise your content, rather than use heavy dead weight luggages......just make sure you reinforce the edges and corners adequately........

they are moving towards chip based cards slowly, but the majority of cards and readers are still magnetic strip based.....and yes, you still need to key in pin........

the move towards chip based cards has nothing to do with being backward or modern, but with fraud......

msia is one of the MOST fraud prone country, and the emv consortium had to very quickly implement chip based cards in misa to reduce fraud........oz is a relatively safe country, and there was no need to rush to implement smart cards, which are more expensive........

the use of pin for all cc use is a simple but effective way of preventing fraud, and i cannot understand why it is not implemented in msia......the signature method is useless against fraud.......(btw, the system in oz allows for signature as well, to accommodate cards from countries using signature)........

you can always withdraw money at an ATM machine. Last time I banked in cash, the funds were available to my account immediately. If your depositing a banker's cheques etc. then of course it will take a few days to process.

I think most debit cards have chips now.I feel that using a pin is more secure and convenient though. I'd rather have to key in a pin rather than using my signature. You can however opt to sign if you want to.
There's also a lot of places equipped with Mastercard's paypass machines nowadays so if your kinda lazy and is using a compatible card, you can just tap your card and finish the transaction in a few seconds without the need for any signatures or pins.

the other thing is, boxes are difficult to carry around, but if you have people picking you up from the airport, or uses a taxi, then it is okay. If you however, need use public transport, then proper luggage with wheels is easier.....

banking in australia is similar or at least far more advanced than in msia.
we have deposit machines. we have app. for your ifon so you can transfer and check your balance thru ur fon. i rarely go to the counter. everything is done online.
i am using commonwealth bank btw.

Oh and yes, if you can please don't work for asians. I spent 2 years working for them cos it's closer to my uni and wasnt confident enough in scoring aussie jobs, and it was pretty hellish compare to what my current aussie boss pays and treats me.

UWA is picking me up in the airport, I guess it's ok right? I had just switch from a big luggage to a smaller luggage for my clothes *squeezing everything in* to accommodate the 30kg limit.

This bit scares most people, primarily Asians, because of the perceived "lack of security", in that anyone who gets hold of your paypass can go on a spending spree with no PIN or signature.

Despite this perception, there hasn't been an outbreak of fraudulent use of the PIN-less paypass system.

Another thing I've noticed is that there aren't as many cash deposit machines in Brisbane as in Malaysia. If you want to deposit cash, its still easier walking into a bank than finding a machine that accepts deposits.

But Meruchan is spot on: I haven't walked into a bank branch in a long while. Almost everything can be done electronically.

actually there's seperate limit for paypass/visawave. you can call cc center and set rm500 limit. if you have realize your card have been stolen, the max amount is still rm500 and can be disputed under bnm law, paying no more than rm250.
i have use it in Hong Kong, it's very convenient. After paying, they will give you the resit to confirm the payment b4 u leave the counter. cheers.

i don't see any deposit machines for commonwealth bank around Melbourne CBD. so far i only see 1 deposit machine from NAB at corner of chinatown and russell street.

i go commonwealth bank at RMIT weekly to deposit money and luckily the counter not busy or need to queue/take ticket number for my turn. the downside is i only can deposit money in working hours doh.gif
