Hi all,

I'll be going to Perth in July to further my studies.
I am aware that in July, it will be Winter.
Could anyone here suggest me what to bring over as a preparation for Winter? smile.gif

My friends who have settled as well for more than a year suggested that no doubt the temp drops to 0 deg at night. Probably 7-9 degrees max during the day. I would suggest you follow up what zekestah has suggested. Btw, I'm now in UWA too. Doing undergrad first yr. =p

Yeah, I'm currently starting to get all the stuffs prepared. Can't wait to go there. biggrin.gif
Let's meet in UWA smile.gif

BTW, where are you staying in Perth?
I found one affordable in Rivervale, do you think it's a bit too far? XD

I'll probably be frowned upon for asking this but, I'm gonna do it anyway biggrin.gif

Anyone knows of any part time/casual vacancies in Perth region? I've tried looking on gumtree and seek.com.au, but I just don't have the luck. Do pm me if you know any, or some tips would be good to. I've tried an asian restaurant and have never felt so humiliated in working my life laugh.gif.

Is it really hard to get a part time/casual job in Perth? cry.gif
Asian restaurant, humiliated, care to share why?

I guess a few forumers did warn about working at such places, but lacked some details in the warning. Here's my account on such a place.

I was scolded within 2 minutes on entering the shop on my 1st working day. Some staff placed my uniform on the counter and one of the bosses walked over to answer a call - "take this !@#% away @#$! can't you see I'm busy !@#%".

Changed into my uniform and didn't know what to do. I asked around but everyone ignored me. Finally someone asked me to move some chairs and tables, before adding a few *&#@$. I know, I should have just helped with whatever they were doing, but I thought everyone had a specific role. From there, I was continuously asked to do different tasks, before the previous one could be completed. And the funny thing is they scolded me for not knowing what to do..."i know it's your 1st @#%^ day but you $@#$ should @#$! already know what to do !@#67$`!"

And boy, are they fickle-minded. "&%^@ go serve this plate to the customer....wait why the %$#! are you serving this to the customer? can't you $%#@ see they @!#$ don't need this? @#!@ use your blain!"

And the incessant scolding got to some of my waiter colleagues, who started to behave similarly. With a sour face and a short grunt "eh!", I was suppose to know what that instruction was.

So that was my first day, and probably the last one. I didn't get another call for another day of work. I didn't sign any documents and neither my pay nor duty was even discussed. I'm still waiting for my call to get my pay...or maybe I'll just barge in one day.

Well, according to one of the workers there, this particular restaurant wasn't the worse he's been to. Something new to experience every now and then eh? End of story biggrin.gif

Ouch!!! And here I thought they are nice and friendly...
I'm going to Perth in 2 weeks time, will be studying in UWA. Where are you studying currently?

p.s. Which restaurant? tongue.gif I don't want to find a job there... whistling.gif

Oh I'm in Murdoch. The restaurant mentioned is near there, which you won't likely encounter. The food is said to be nice and reasonable, though I wouldn't go there...because immediately after clearing the rubbish bin I was asked to wipe the plates laugh.gif

Oooo... Murdoch biggrin.gif
What course? smile.gif My class starts on 1st August, I'll be there on the 17th to search for rooms. icon_question.gif

I'm doing my master in renewable energy. You can try searching for rooms at http://perth.gumtree.com.au/, or you can post what you want there (for free biggrin.gif). It's better to call when you see phone numbers on those ads than to email - else it'll take ages to find a room. It took me 3 agonising days to find a clean room after some singaporean students left me high and dry (they kicked me out before I moved in, because apparently someone paid the rental bond before me and they didn't know about it doh.gif). Good luck!

smile.gif I'm doing my masters too, in communication studies! Hehe! Yea, I did search around that web but I couldn't register because it's only for those registered under Australia's telco. I emailed a few of them but no replies! Haha! Well, I'll continue searching when I get there.

By the way, I have a question about driving there, I know we could drive with our current driving license without converting to an international driving license but do I need an international license to buy a car there?

I don't know where should I ask this but had anyone tried this?
Had anyone of you actually packed something like carton boxes as check-in luggage?
Is it possible? Cause my luggage with my clothings is already 19kg, my other luggage with my containing my daily use is 15kg.
I had exceeded the 30kg limit.

The luggage itself is 6kg, so I was planning to pack all my other stuff in a carton box.

yes, this is commonly done, to maximise your content, rather than use heavy dead weight luggages......just make sure you reinforce the edges and corners adequately........
Thanks!
It's my first time so yeah, I'm kinda blur...
I'm gonna search for carton boxes now... laugh.gif
flex.gif So much stuff to carry.

the other thing is, boxes are difficult to carry around, but if you have people picking you up from the airport, or uses a taxi, then it is okay. If you however, need use public transport, then proper luggage with wheels is easier.....

UWA is picking me up in the airport, I guess it's ok right? I had just switch from a big luggage to a smaller luggage for my clothes *squeezing everything in* to accommodate the 30kg limit.
