QUOTE(Azurues @ Dec 5 2009, 12:47 AM) I can't wait to see which country is so unlucky to be with Spain or Germany and not to forget which is group of death Don't forget Netherlands. Remember their EURO performanceWe can say Italy and Argentina is the weakest team in seed 1. Hope both of the team ended up with Australia, Ivory Cost, France and Protugal South Africa will get easy group since them is Tuan Rumah This post has been edited by Sifha238: Dec 5 2009, 12:26 AM |

QUOTE(kuai_chai @ Dec 5 2009, 12:27 AM) Judging by team form and performance tells me otherwise.Well you cant always count them out yet. Remember 2006 where they had calciopoli and still manage to win it. But i dont reckon there're going to be favourites for this. Brazil and Spain for final. |

Haha.. Group C is kinda interesting as well... because all teams in this group wear white home jerseys.. England, USA, Slovenia and Algeria...
They may have to rotate turns in which team wears their home and away kit.. They definitely needs their away kit.. |

possible round of 16 games looks MASSIVE.. spain v brazil/portugal, argie v france/mexico, english v germans, holland v italy...
got a feeling maradona is sitting somewhere laughing at dunga right now.. gotta be wary of them african teams too.. but ghana & I.coast, africa's best bet ended up in the 2 toughest groups.. This post has been edited by jackanory: Dec 5 2009, 02:53 AM |

italy got paired wit NZ, Para & slovak. They could be favourite in the group...
but paraguay has history of did well against european team. Oso slovakia could be dark horse in this group.. As for NZ..i dono..if this is a rugby tourny.. yeah they're fav to top the group |

African teams should be performing well this WC due to the climate.
And this time, most of the African teams looks strong. So my bet, Brazil and Ivory Coast gonna qualify |

Spain group look really easy for them. Not to disrespect but even if they meet Brazil it will look like a one sided match with their football they are playing.
Now i wish the final will be Germany Vs Spain. This 2 country always perform in country matches. This post has been edited by Azurues: Dec 5 2009, 03:05 AM |

England should win their group easily, no question about that. Beckham (presuming he plays) is gonna be up against his paymasters.

I have a good feeling its gonna be Lennon on the right. He's on fire at the moment. Beckham should really stick to his endorsements. Unless he prove his point at Milan, its not gonna be the starting 11 for him. |

QUOTE(Jurlique @ Dec 5 2009, 11:42 PM) Bear with me, despite Ivory Coast facing tough opponents, they will make it. Trust me. Portugal might see the exit instead of Brazil.I can foresee that Brazil will not make it to the 2nd round. Brazil is beatable. The Elephants and Portugal will process. And Drogba is playing in africa soil. Portugal really struggled without Ronaldo, it's basically a one-man team now. :/ Hard to imagine what if he got sent off or something |

Frank Lampard and Jermaine Defoe failed from the penalty spot against ManCity and Everton, so I dread to think how England are going to win if they are forced to go to penalty kicks.

QUOTE(Sifha238 @ Dec 8 2009, 01:02 AM) exactly. that's what they are famous for. in the knockout stages, they will usually try as much as possible to settle for a draw so that they can get to the penalty shoot-out. |

QUOTE Ronaldo has publicly expressed his desire to play for Brazil in the World Cup 2010 in South Africa. “It would be great to play in the 2010 Cup. However, my sole priority for now is to finish my rehab and get back into shape. Thus far, my recuperation has gone great,” he added. Question - Would you like to see O Fenômeno back in action in the 2010 FIFA WC ? Personally, I grow up watching him playing football, and he still has the hunger of scoring goals. I know some of you might doubt his current ability but I would love to see him included in the Brazil squad. My hope might be unrealistic seeing Pato, Fabiano, Nilmar are on the way but still comparing with Ronaldo and his achievements, he is definitely in league of his own. |

i always wonder what happen if in a group stage, if all the results are 0-0....
all team end up with 3 points, same goal difference... maybe its unlikely to happen but it also not impossible... are there any rules stated if this happen ?? or they will look at fair play teams to qualify ? |

England are always a under-achiever. The favourites are Argentina and Ivory Coast this time round. |

And Terry is just 29 this year, if the overrated Cannavaro can do so little yet win World Player of the year, terry still can do it at 33I don't see any England young defender now that can be as good as Terry and Ferdinand. Upson, Lescott etc is good player but not world class like them. Also England has no promising center midfielder right now to replace Lampard and Gerrard ( Wilshere ? ) Correct me if I'm wrong Center midfield would be James Milner and on the wings they will have Ashley Young and Walcott. Don't forget the experience of Barry, Carrick and Hargreaves, if he ever recovers that is. Infact i think i shall give my prediction on England's squad in 2014 Hart Johnson Terry Richards Baines Walcott Milner Hargreaves Young Rooney Defoe With the exception of Hargreaves and Terry, all of them will reach peak age of 25-30 by 2014 =D Pretty strong imo. I for one have never supported any national team but I must admit that I'll be following games involving England and Spain this coming tournament. No secret why. I'm going for Spain to finally break the jinx. Like Holland or even the New Zealand All-Blacks, they have always choked during major tournaments. Some people may say that they are the obvious favourites seeing as they rank first on FIFAs rankings but if you look back, you'll note that they've only ever bagged two major international titles, the latest being the European Championship. They have never progressed beyond the Quarter-Finals of the World Cup since 1950 and are not clear cut favourites if you ask me.
Why Spain then? I think they have an abundance of talent in the squad although they may be a little thin at the back. I just saw them make France look like a 2nd rate team, winning 2-0 at the Stade De France, their first on French soil for an eternity. They way Spain passed the ball about especially in the middle of the park was a sight to behold. I think that amongst all the teams, they have the most options in that position. Iniesta, Silva, Xavi, Fabregas and Jesus Navas all featured in that game and all work the ball about so well in closed quarters. You then have Xabi Alonso sitting deep, spraying the ball about if you are looking to pass the ball long. Liverpool fans will also attest to the fact that he has a pretty good defensive game as well. If Spain are leading and need to defend a lead, they can bring on Senna and Busquets. In attack they have two of the best strikers in the world, in Villa and Torres. Against France, they had the luxury of playing both as lone strikers at different times. Anyone see Torres turn Ciani inside out? If the starting back four stay healthy, I think they have an excellent shot. From what I saw Pique seems to have matured into an assured, steady defender and at 6'4" is solid in the air on both ends of the pitch. Ramos has good footwork for a defender. I may not know as much about the team as say Verx but from what little I saw, they will definitely be hard to beat. |

I may not know as much about the team as say Verx but from what little I saw, they will definitely be hard to beat. I think you've pretty much hit the nail on the head. I dunno if they will win the tournament for sure cause knockout rounds are always unpredictable. But for me Spain are definitely the best equipped of all the NTs. The amount of options they have is just frightening. And when you look at the list of players they will leave behind I'm thinking what would other NT managers give to have talent like that at their disposal. And it's not just in midfield and forward positions; I was discussing the GK position in the Barca thread where some were advocating Valdes to be included in the squad. And I just commented what Capello would give to have Diego Lopez who is 3rd choice for Spain to be able to play for England. To think that England were considering Almunia for the job just speaks volumes. The only weakness they have I would say are their fullback positions. Other than Capdevilla there is no other specialist LB in the squad. But Arbeloa can do a decent job in the position as he has proven for both Liverpool and Madrid. Ramos may have been a liability in defence a year ago but he has he's stepped up a level this year. Pique, Puyol, Albiol at CB means that they have enough options. So I won't exactly call that thin. There is a limit to the number of players you can bring after all. And more options in midfield always trumps more options in defence. The fact that come the first game their bench might include: Pepe Reina, Albiol, Senna, Fabregas, Navas, Mata, Torres just says it all really. |

sole reason france got to the final of 06 was mostly bcoz of Zidane's magic...don't mention me the name
of domenech...coz wat kind of coach dat leave player like robert pires while preferring then unknown bafetimbi gomis? **and btw...last match between France & spain? Did the match were contest at paris @ madrid? Coz i here most of the crowd cheering for la furia roja and booing les blues more. Quite similar situation when argentina beat them 2-0 in marseille last year |

For me, as Cassa Azzurri fans... i don't fancy italy has many chance to defend their title...but dis is football..
the last time Italy won WC, no one ever bet on them to past last 16 stage. But if i'd to pick the fav to won dis edition of WC, Spain & Brazil is my choice...and don't forget da Maanschaft..they rarely performing bad during international tournament.. Los Albiceleste deserved a mention also..but like France...they have a "not-so-genius" coach at their helm eventhough they have lot of talented player in the team |

yes - have secured WC tickets but not yet make any booking for staying or tour. Est. budget spending around 10K (all but exclude WC ticket)
Cape Town or Kruger park would be in my itinerary. we can exchange information, ticketing, or maybe touring ... |

Im quite confident Argentina can do well in this WC maybe at least to semi-final. I know many doubtful about Maradona, but he still has Carlos Bilardo behind him, who has a lot of experience in the WC that can guide him in some way. Plus, not being labeled as favorites this time around may do good to Argentina.

well i don't mind if owen joins capello's side in south africa
he has different shoes to fill.for centre forward we can go with rooney.and owen can be 2nd striker(if they played 4-4-1-1),or he can play alongside him i'm fond with the old guys(owen, nistelrooy, ronaldinho, etc).sure they are older but not necessarily less useful |

watched n.koreaxgreece in the morning
i watched them because i want to confirm something about nk style of playing.and i jump to the conclusion that them north korean are playing a very archaic(old skool, those you see in european team in the fifties/sixties) football, zigzag 1-2,short pass and nobody(except that rooney asia) hold the ball long. there's something that our national team can learn about them north korean tactics.malaysian tea, are definitely well built(average height of our team is about 170-175cm),better fed than them,we got better facilities, etc.yet they are able to show a very agreeable style of football that surprised the significantly taller and better team(like the greek).perhaps what i can see is that the nk are more hardworking in the pitch(all of them moving),they are natural with the ball and do attacking/defending buildup faster than us 2sen |

I've always admired (sometimes even shed a few tears) at how passionate teams competing in the WC were. They really were proud of donning their national team jerseys eventhough some of them are multi millionaires. The Jules Rimet trophy is surely the Holy Grail of every footballers. The moment they step onto the pitch and their respective national anthems are playing, you can really feel their passion. And for the fans, it's really a proud moment when your national flag is flying proudly in any of the WC stadiums. Which made me think why our national team for all its past glory (qualified only for the Olympics twice), never made it to the WC finals. The national squad for the past 25 years are not really capable maybe but you have to question some of the players' passion when donning the yellow jersey. We are really lucky as now we are able to watch all 64 matches live. But enjoying watching it is one thing but doesn't it somehow ignites passion in our footballers both present and future? Why can't we find decent enough players who can challenge the other Asian teams and qualify for the WC finals? I want to take the Slovenian analogy as an example. For a nation of just over 2 million (that's even less than KL's population), they managed to qualify for not one but two WC. And to top it all off, they qualified from Europe which is notoriously difficult to qualify from (ask England, France & Holland). Slovenia, I think is the biggest winner in world football. Zlatco Dedic? Rober Koren? Who the heck are these people? We have a population of 27 million and a government who is fully supportive of football development programs. Is it too much for us to ask for a team that can at least challenge during qualification? As it is, our world ranking is so low it beggars believe. Well, some of you might say, hey..China with 1.2 billion people didn't qualify either! True but they are up there and you certainly can't discount the possibilities that they will qualify sometime in the future. But Malaysia? Just ask yourself how proud we will be IF we had qualified this time around and "Negaraku" is playing at one of the venue. Since we didn't, can we or rather dare we hope that come 2014 or 2020, this dream can be realised? |

QUOTE(robertngo @ May 26 2010, 05:35 PM) they pay so hard maybe also to avoid punishment from Kim jong il, the iraqi team of 1986 was caned on the soles of the feet for their loss in the world cup. they better work hard to win the ball if not they have their balls electrocuted when they got home. some of the player are south korean playing for north koreaand if anything, the footballer are treated like an elite(which means an apartment in pyongyang, free utilities, issued wives,i dunno...) in the juche regime. BERLIN, May 28 — Most Germans would prefer watching their team contesting the World Cup final than having sex with their partners, a survey here has revealed yesterday.
Should Joachim Loew’s side reach the final in Johannesburg on July 11, a potential night of passion would be shown the red card by most Germans in favour of the chance to see their team in action on television. In a survey for the Reader’s Digest magazine, only five per cent of those questioned would prefer a night between the sheets with their loved one to watching Germany contest the World Cup final. And only an emergency would stop 52 per cent watching the final live, while a fifth of all those surveyed said not even that excuse would prevent them being glued to the television, should Germany reach the final. But 38 pe rcent of those questioned said they were not interested in football. However, Germany’s success on the field can turn up the heat in the nation’s bedrooms: There were a flood of new-born babies here nine months after the national side finished third at the World Cup four years ago. — AFP/Relaxnews |

i predict france to stun doubters with a strong finish too. the 1st match hard to predict, but i bank on home advantage |

the SA defence looks shaky and they are scare to attack in number, the mexican have some really fast player for counter attack i think it is a matter of time before they slip one in.

Hey, I googled and everything. I even tried my best to understand the offside call made by the referee. But why is it offside? Anyone mind to explain? Pienaar was there >__>

When you are behind the goalie there needs to be TWO men playing you onside

QUOTE(normeck @ Jun 12 2010, 12:27 AM) Taken from Arsenal Street Talk QUOTE(jenglots @ Jun 12 2010, 12:26 AM) Its offside rule. However, its rarely happened. http://www.offside-ref.co.uk/laws/11-offside-rule/detailed/ QUOTE(kimhoong @ Jun 12 2010, 12:28 AM) This one? The red number 9 isn't beyond the blue 4 defender but is offside because the goal keeper isn't back. This is one of those rare occasions where goal keeper is out of the goal (e.g. last minute of F.A. Cup final on a corner kick) and can't get back in time but if the attacking team play the ball as they normally would, then it would be offside because the offside rule requires two defenders to be in front the attacker and the goal keeper usually counts as a defender. |

Pienaar was there >__> Offside means that the offender was caught between the last 2 players, closest to the goal line. In this case, the last man is the defender while goal keeper has came out in front of the scorer and become the 2nd last man. Therefore the scorer was caught in between this area which is ruled offside.SA should have won it.. Mexico is taking it way too easy and should be punished really. Overall, not a good game. A lot of misjudge passes but forgiven as it was the first game. This post has been edited by andrekua: Jun 12 2010, 12:48 AM |

An offside occurs when a player is caught in between the last and the second last opponent player (no matter goalkeeper or an outfield player). Hope that helps.

Without Messi, Argentina looks ordinary. They'll probably beat Nigeria tonight but without Messi, they may struggle against the speedy South Koreans.

Result should have been at least 3-0. All the near-goals from Messi !! Great match. Nigeria played very well too. Looking at the way the Argies played, I think they are serious contenders.

Most horrible sounding thing ever, or one of. Really annoying. I didn't catch the Confederations Cup so wasn't aware about the problem that was discussed about the sound then. But having listened to it once, I understand why people are annoyed. It serve no bloody purpose other than to annoy people. With gendang and what not, at least there's a rhythm or something. But this just like 'buzzz'... whole game long. WTF!

Argentina vs Nigeria: Messi very aggressive and a good player but without luck. Should have more goals in this game. But I really hope that Nigeria can score at least a goal although don't really right how they play the game.
England vs USA : I was amazed USA can give a fight like that. What a lucky shot! Rooney very late to make and action and Gerard give a good play but something look "serba tak kena". They waste some chance with some unsuccessful pass. |

Dunno lah. Spain always look good before tournaments only.
Next Asian team - Japan. I'm just afraid they'll get outmuscled by the Cameroonians. After looking at the South Koreans, I don't believe I've seen a team with more skinny players yet. This post has been edited by SweetPuff: Jun 14 2010, 10:33 AM |

IINM the Bundesliga have been using the ball for 6 months already, you can safely say that the Germans have mastered playing with the Jabulani and have performed far better than the other teams so far.

Japan getting outmuscled. But they got gaya hairstyles and facial hairs though.
Added on June 14, 2010, 10:18 pmI think they need some Clint Dempsey luck to get something out of this. Good thing is, they seem quite tight at the back. Added on June 14, 2010, 10:39 pmWoot! EDIT : Eh wait, i was wrong yeah. ALL of them play in the bundesliga. anyway every time before world cup player especially goal keeper will complain about the ball, i think it is so if that when they have some bad save they can blame on the ball |

The ball is just a convenient excuse. So far I've seen nothing to suggest that the ball is such a major factor despite the complaints. Free kicks getting skied into the stands? That would have happened with a normal ball seeing as so far the players standing over the kicks haven't exactly been free-kick specialists. I think Sneijder is the only specialist I can recall and his FK was from quite a distance.

What lousy World Cup so far. Except for South Africa vs Mexico, Germany vs Australia and Italy vs Paraguay, the rest of the tournament so far are extremely boring and poor in quality. A change of ball contributes to that? I really doubt so.

this world cup is not so exciting compare to the last 3 . not only is the vuvus an irritant but the Adidas Jabulani ball ,for some reason, may have caused the players to produced so few exquisite passes and goals . don't know it's the ball or the player
but on the plus side , the HD broadcast is simply exquisite |

I find all the so called underdog teams seem to give the bigger team a run for their money, a good fight i if might say, make the bigger team work much harder and not so complacent. Im was all for Brazil to win ,but DPR korea impressed me |

I'm loving Germany's & Chile's game at the moment. The rest of the giants are quite disappointing especially Spain. Now off to the 2nd round of group matches & see which teams are consistent.

I'm not overly optimistic about Spain's chances but it is too early to write them off. This defeat may be a blessing in disguise. If they beat Honduras and Chile (and one of them beat the Swiss), they may still top the group - who knows?
Germany, Brazil, Argentina and even Holland appear to be contenders. |

If you ever played football you’d know that the rounder the better, every ball has a sweet spot. Even for Adidas Fevernova, the official match ball of 2002 FIFA World Cup has been criticized.
Well, is it just players or just the technology? This post has been edited by Joey Christensen: Jun 17 2010, 11:15 AM |

It's a well known fact that those professional football players are just like typical Malaysian. Complain, complain and complain. I just want to see the most beautiful game in the world: FOOTBALL!
The Spaniards fell even they have dominated from the kick off till full time. I must say the Spain displayed very good pin point passing throughout the game. Sigh...I hate to admit it but while the build up was good, execution was horrifying. With a 1-0 lead for Switzerland, substitutions were made. Jesus Navas and Fernando Torres were called in acting as salvage cavalry duo. I guess it's pretty much later in the second half. Pressure was mounting and things get a bit ugly. One noticeable change after the substitutes came, the pace and chance creation has improve. More balls were sending forward, pushing hard from the flank, especially from Jesus Navas. The Switzerland played well in defensive field, covering from the D line at 30 yards or so and was solid in patience defensive wall. They nearly make a humiliating exit for the Spain by 2-0 margin when Derdiyok hit the dumb post with a quarter-hour to go. Nerve wrecking and I was glued on my couch and my eyes were blank. I just couldn't believe it. Spain could have lost 2-0 to Switzerland given that awkward circumstance. 52nd minute goal is enough to nick a win from the Spaniards. Sigh~~~and the cavalry came late to rescue Spain from defeat. |

Ottmar Hitzfeld show that not just mourinho know how to beat a team with vastly superior skill by using tactic and discipline. i hope someday malaysian can play like this. i might be to much to expect we can discover so many world class talent like the spanish team, but discipline and tactic can be learn. The Spaniards fell even they have dominated from the kick off till full time. Sigh~~~and the cavalry came late to rescue Spain from defeat. QUOTE Spain may have had a team packed with Champions League winners but Switzerland still overcame them thanks to the guile of the man nicknamed ‘Der General’ who, with Jose Mourinho and Ernst Happel, is the only manager to have won the European Cup at different clubs. Hitzfeld proudly explained his tactics afterwards, saying that he was happy for Spain to have possession, as long as it was on Switzerland’s terms. By that, he meant his players had been told to focus on depriving the European Champions space in what he called the “red zone” between defence and midfield. The idea was to keep Spain in front of them or force them down the flanks. Hitzfeld knew that centre-backs Stéphane Grichting and Philippe Senderos, who could now miss the tournament with suspected ankle ligament damage, could deal with Spain’s limited aerial threat. Switzerland have also set a World Cup record of five consecutive clean sheets. “The players followed instructions perfectly and, of course, we had a bit of luck,” said Hitzfeld. EL PIPITA scored the first Hatrick in this World Cup. Hope he can continue this form to become the top Scorer for this world Cup though I don't think they can go far with that kinda performance.
