As far as I know, it depends on ur setup. Most ppl change 20% water monthly or maybe every 2 months provided they have nice CO2. Some manage to maintain it without changing water for half a year or so. Still, you gotta add water once in awhile anyway. Seems to me my tank drys up pretty quickly. Anyone care to share some tips bout less changing water or making dripping tank? Nice pics btw. rclxms.gif

Thanks for reply, i have no other tank to move the flying fox, think i should just let it stays there. smile.gif

Will the flying fox be less aggressive when it grows mature or bigger like CAE? Currently its size is around 30mm.

2) how frequent do u guy trim the plant on average??

welcome to aquatic plant layout world...

1) normally we practise weekly water change of 30 - 40%, water get clouded? so far, nope... with a stable and well develope system, ie bacteria system is healthy, u hardly get this...

2) depends on the plants type... high light plants, stem plants, i will trim roughly every2~3months....

hope will answer ur doubt...
anything not clear, please do ask....

Hmm, seems you guys does that water change 30~40% weekly. Mine is sort of shrimp tank. Did some research and found that to maintain good bacteria cycle for my shrimps I cant do that much water changes. Maybe I should do erm, 20% every 2 or 3 weeks (now I still doing 20% monthly)? How does that affect to the plants for you guys? So far my plants seems fine since most of them are moss, easy to take care of. But cant be sure for long term view like maybe 1 or 2 years.

HCTH. Your ammonia levels should be zero and having more plants Doesn't mean you will get higher ammonia readings.. Have a stronger filter or add bacteria additives.. should reduce that ammonia readings to nil.

2211 IS NOT ENOUGH for 2 1/2 feet tank.. For these sized you need at least 2215 or 2x 2213...

That filter is underpowered therefore the ammonia readings is present.. the filter media and flowrate isn't enough to support your 2 1/2 feet tank.

@blinded, looking good, keep it up.

@cata, that pic was taken by stanchung..

@ HCTH, If I'm not the first person to point that out , why still doubtful of the ammonia readings? Get some other canister filter, be it MIC or EHEIM.. as long as it has a larger media space and bigger flowrate, go for it.

1) turn the dial so that the exact time NOW is at the little Arrow indicator. If it's 11:00PM now, then turn until 23 is at the Arrow.
2) To set the time when u want it to switch on, push the little black 'keys' down. If you want it to turn on from 15:00 - 20:00 hrs, then push down all the keys in that region...
3) Set the button on the rightside to reveal the "timer/clock" symbol. Plug it into the socket, and switch on the main power source. Done.

U see the black ring around the numbers??

First off the numbers are set to 24 hour system.. as Tut mentioned.. depending on the time you wish to set.. just push in the black 'keys' at the desired ON time.. For example.. Mine is from 11a,m.-7a.m. .. So all the keys from 11 to 19 is pushed down to indicate ON. whereas the others which aren't pushed in are OFF..

HTH
Drew

Added on December 3, 2009, 12:13 amI can see from the picture that ALL THE RINGS ARE PUSHED IN / ON.. just pull em out.

welcome to aquatic plant layout world...

May somebody roughly estimate for me what's the budget look like in order to setup decent medium light 2 feet planted tank with basic equipment/material (soil, fertz)...excluding plants/fish...
Also wish anybody to enlighten me on the specification of equipment/material (i.e. filter flowrate, light wattage/temperature etc) to maintain a 2 feet planted tank ??? notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

lights if diy about roughly the bulb would cost rm30? then balast another 10 bucks and the casing about rm5..if a nice light straight off the shelf i would reckon i bout mine at rm130.

the soil gex would be rm30 per bag you'd need 2 bags rm60

filters varies.. from canisters from rm150 to thousands. hob would cost u rm40 60. or normal overhead filter cost u about gah, rm30?

fertilizers mine is rm20. thers alot of types as well..

lights about not sure.. 50watt?

temperature ideal is colder waters better plant growth? too cold also not good.. my temp avg is at 22degrees.. too low i think..

basically.. including tank, gah.. rm400.. maybe less maybe more..

lights if diy about roughly the bulb would cost rm30? then balast another 10 bucks and the casing about rm5..if a nice light straight off the shelf i would reckon i bout mine at rm130.

the soil gex would be rm30 per bag you'd need 2 bags rm60

filters varies.. from canisters from rm150 to thousands. hob would cost u rm40 60. or normal overhead filter cost u about gah, rm30?

fertilizers mine is rm20. thers alot of types as well..

lights about not sure.. 50watt?

temperature ideal is colder waters better plant growth? too cold also not good.. my temp avg is at 22degrees.. too low i think..

basically.. including tank, gah.. rm400.. maybe less maybe more..
*
Thanks...RM400, that's reasonably cheap i guess... surprised that the soil and fertz is less then RM100...
From the tank pictures at 1st page i noticed HOB filter is quite popular.any particular reason??? advantage???
What's the suitable flow rate for my filter to maintain a clean and biologically balance tank?? my tank is 2ft x 1ft x 1ft (approx 56-57 litres of waters)..

PLants are usually sold seperately in the LFS..

@silverbolt
That's just a rough estimation.. It really depends on what you buy and stuff like that.

Drew

Added on December 3, 2009, 8:36 amThe reason why HOBs are cheap because they are cheap and do not have as much C02 loss compared to the overhead.. though more expensive than overheads, but cheaper than canisters.. ( though canisters would be the BEST option )

thats because thats the price of the cheapest soil.. a brand named GEX.. high end soil are from the brand ADA. gex would fetch at rm30 per bag. ADA would go from rm80 to rm120++ per bag.

price of liquid fertilizers also differs.. from rm20 per bottle to rm 50 60 as well.. and theres alot of kinds of fertiizers u need to look at!

i personally arent fond of using HOB because of its size. its so small fr me biggrin.gif im using overhead filter with a 2ft filter box ontop of my 2ft tank. match it with a very powerful filter and u have urself a very good filtering system. flow rate im not sure though.. but any good sized filters would do

MMM, my plan is to set a fully green planted freshwater tank...
will cheaper material (soil/ferts) able to give decent result for beginner planted tank??
i already have the tank and HOB filter from my current fish tank...
the filter was rated 7w 1200l/h, is it sufficient to filter my 2ft 57liter planted tank then?? sweat.gif

i dont think gex brand is cheap though.... rm30 for only 2kg...

ADA rm80 for 9kg... so gex 1kg is rm15 x 9kg= rm135

ya we know buying in bulk will be cheaper but there are also some lfs selling loose ADA for example if not mistaken ADA 1kg=rm10... so saying gex is cheapest is not so true...

May somebody roughly estimate for me what's the budget look like in order to setup decent medium light 2 feet planted tank with basic equipment/material (soil, fertz)...excluding plants/fish...
Also wish anybody to enlighten me on the specification of equipment/material (i.e. filter flowrate, light wattage/temperature etc) to maintain a 2 feet planted tank ???  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif

ok, based on my own experience and advice....

1) soil
1pack of 9L ADA aquasoil, amazonia if u ask me... RM88~90

2) hardscape
rocks - depends
drift woods - depends
i would say probably budget is around RM100 for both if go for better visual

3) Filteration
600L/h canister filter will be good.
if want cheap, go for KW brand dophin C700
http://www.kwzone.com/products/links/canister%20filter.htm
i would say around RM150~180

4) lighting?
depends of what type of plants....
low light? high light?
standard 2ft = 60x30x30cm =54L
around 50~60w lighting is ok
around RM200 if buy ready made (nicer appearance)
DIY might cost you ~RM80 (PLL 32w x 2)

5) temperature
the best is around 25 degree...
there are 2 ways
a) cheaper way, DIY PC fan, cost you around RM50
b) more efficient way, compressor type chiller, you can go survey the price for new 1, or 2nd hand.

i can think all of that at the moment, please do ask if anything not clear..

thanks

That's good one bro thumbup.gif anyway i'm going for medium light (not to high, not to low)...
i'm kinda going to budget planted tank as beginner...something basic to start and learn with...
do wanna take risk straight away go for high end equipment later if failed will greatly feel depress laugh.gif

For Lightning and Water Temperature, i'm goin to DIY the stuff...
i noticed nobody mentioned about CO2 supply...do i need CO2 supply with this medium light 2 feet tanks???

pressurized co2 will cost u bout rm400 sweat.gif ... unless u wanna go for diy, its cheap but i dont have luxury spending every weekend to mix the ingredients.... furthermore it is not stable...

my experience, presurized is the easiest even though i would opt to have soleniod regulator but at this moment dun have budget to buy 2 reg for my 2 co2 tanks sweat.gif

is basically sugar and yeast mixed tugether that produces co2.. yes it works ofcourse!
the neat thing abt it is the canister itself.. the mix after uve used up the prepacked one.. u can just make ur own mix with sugar + yeast.. diy urself

good, tat size good for iwagumi....
if arrangement correct, u will have a view of long tank, very nice...

1ft square to keep rcs, no problem at all...
to keep crs, maybe the water volume a bit low and parameter will change easily...

good, tat size good for iwagumi....
if arrangement correct, u will have a view of long tank, very nice...

1ft square to keep rcs, no problem at all...
to keep crs, maybe the water volume a bit low and parameter will change easily...
*
haha... i know that as well, but the thing is the money to set it up... too much already.
i do think of setting it up, but then need lots of soil... hmm...

but then i hardly found 1ft square tank. mostly is smaller than that.
like 1ft x 0.5ft x 0.5ft, so i dunno how will it become if use those size tank.
i know the parameter will change easily, but then what you mean about the water volume a bit low?

i kenot paham u guys punya sentences hhahahaahhah

wat he trying to say is i think to start the canister filter, u need to fill up the canister first before turning it on.
and he was asking what is the OPENCLOSE part is for.. then he discovered that he can just open that part only when he wants to fill up the canister with water.. so he does not have to open the whole canister punya cover to fill up the water..

correct ah? hahahaha

sometimes there is air inside the canister which might make the pump not fully function...
the cover is for u to top up water till full, so that the pump can fully function...
if those use hydor P series before, they also have this function...

hi guys,

i would like to try n since i m a beginner i decide to use a small tank.
wud appreciate your advises...

tank : 10 liters
subscrate : ADA
gravel : buy from shop
light : approx 10W
type of plant : wud like to try small carpet plants, eg hairgrass or HC
extra : tetra nitrate minus, water conditioner

how i set-up :
1. set substrate on bottom of tank. how much shd i put? in inches...
2. rinse gravel n set on top of subsrate, approx 1", is it enough? shd i mix with some substrate to make up 2nd layer?

my questions :
1. filter, how big or how many liters water flow shd i choose for my small tank?
2. i will try to look for Tetra nitrate minus in granule form and spread on 2nd layer of gravel, and then add another layer of gravel. is it ok?

i use the method i found in youtube as i didn't know how, is it ok?
i have not tot of CO2 as i believe my tank is small, shd i also buy CO2?
wat temp shd i keep d water?
ideal ph level?
if i use tap water n just add water conditioner, is it ok?
i intend to just keep a few shrimps in d tank, no fish.

appreciate your adv n feedback....

hi guys,

i would like to try n since i m a beginner i decide to use a small tank.
wud appreciate your advises...

tank : 10 liters
subscrate : ADA
gravel  :  buy from shop
light  :  approx 10W
type of plant  :  wud like to try small carpet plants, eg hairgrass or HC
extra :  tetra nitrate minus, water conditioner

how i set-up :
1. set substrate on bottom of tank. how much shd i put? in inches...
2. rinse gravel n set on top of subsrate, approx 1", is it enough? shd i mix with some substrate to make up 2nd layer?

my questions :
1. filter, how big or how many liters water flow shd i choose for my small tank?
2. i will try to look for Tetra nitrate minus in granule form and spread on 2nd layer of gravel, and then add another layer of gravel. is it ok?

i use the method i found in youtube as i didn't know how, is it ok?
i have not tot of CO2 as i believe my tank is small, shd i also buy CO2?
wat temp shd i keep d water?
ideal ph level?
if i use tap water n just add water conditioner, is it ok?
i intend to just keep a few shrimps in d tank, no fish.

appreciate your adv n feedback....
*
1) why u wanna put gravel on top of ADA aquasoil?
2) what is tetra nitrate minus ? with a develope and healthy bacteria system, u dun need tat
3) CO2? since u mentioned hairgrass, is a CO2 must must plant

Come liao.. Come liao....

4feeter?
If
[ classic series..]
I recomend
OKAY : ONE 2217..

BETTER : TWO 2215

BEST : TWO 2217 nod.gif ( This is crazy haha, but guarantee you filter strong )

that would be the "cheaper" options lorh.. Ecco series are too small for a 4feeter and you need to buy more than 1 unit to be stable.. Anything else is more expensive ( professional range )

But seriously, as long as the L/H is anywhere between 4x~6x of your tank litreage, then it's fine ( EXAMPLE, TANK IS 100 LITRES . YOUR FILTER AT LEAST BE 400~600 L/H MINIMUM. ) personally, i go for 10x.. but that's just me.

@pskk,

Don't rely on chemicals, it's only a temporary solution. PLUS, NO AQUARIUM IS ALGAE FREE. I dare anyone here say their tanks are algae free.

Also, ADA soil is the "new" type of soil, it doesn't use that method where we put a clay based nutrient rich "soil" and cover with a layer of gravel.. that's the old skool method. Still can do. But NOT WITH ADA SOIL.

Hope this helps.

Oh, instead on relying on youtube, let's try reading around.. let's say.. www.my-mac.net ahaha tons of aquascaping based information you can find there.

Basically ..

THe "OLD" method.

Put clay based nutrient rich substrate in the bottom..

A layer of gravel or "fancy sand" on top..

The "new" method :
ADA introduced it to the hobby, with these "manufactured" soils .. we don't have to put it in layers anymore.. THOUGH THERE IS THE OPTIONAL POWERSAND FROM ADA..( THis is another whole new story, so let's not get there yet)

Weird 1 of my yamato shrimp appears to be dying or dead, (lying on its side, occasionally twitching), but after a while, starts moving suddenly, then stop and like dying again, then after a while, suddenly back up on driftwood upside down.

Whats wrong with it? =.=

hi chuppy2 & pinchboyz.........

thks for the links.....i understand now......can i just ask how much is a CO2 system set-up, d most basic ( affordable also but good enough to use )?

is there any other less costly alternative to ADA soil ADA power sand n d rest of ADA products for the tank eg, Penac P & W, Bacter 100, clear super, etc......the reason is i dont want to spend so much on 1st time n it turns out to be unsuccessful...

am currently sourcing for a table/bench for the aquarium....will buy a 31ltr size....

thks again

@pskk- i think you can get other soil brand such as GEX. cheaper than ADA. for 5 elements, you can buy it loose (per spoon, per packet) around rm10-25 for the total 5.

my co2 from fire extinguisher just finish tonight. kind of weird, i just use it 2weeks. around 2bps 24/7...

they say Gex soil clears faster than ADA, but the Gex soil i using now the grain size is quite big, and it seems to be abit light, so my plants cant stay in the soil if its just about 1-1.5 inch high sad.gif

what is ur 2 ft tank size?
assume standard 60 x 30 x 30 (cm)
60 x 30 x (height of soil) = 9L
u will have around 5cm height of soil average...

wont la... if kept within allowable temperature, shrimp grow faster in warmer water and slower in colder waters.... if want them to grow fast, need to let them eat alot as well... but cannot too fast la.. if they grow too big before they can molt their outer shell, they can die... i guess datz what happening to my shrimps... sad.gif

About the algae, Amano shrimp is another choice.

Shrimps can tahan in the post over 24 hours I believe, But Must be pell packed and insulated... Cherries can breed at 28C.

@adrian, it is worth it, also you might have temperature issues using MH.. be reminded when your lighting is stronger, if kpt well, plants grow faster IF not, algae grow faster.

Wow drool.gif I wish I can have a fish room... But mum don't allow me put aquarium indoors, all my tanks outside... I have the space, just don't have the plug point.

And any of you guys know where can get play sand? Those kind of sand the "masaleh" buy for the children to play in the sand box? They look really good in planted tanks...

Thanks

@fongzai, i believe you got your answer over at MAC. It's leanign towards your window being a light source.. My lights turn on at 11am-7pm and I don't get such issues lol. most people with an 'additional' light source and odd ON times get such problems.

Nobody here would want to count their total spendings. Even if they do, I bet they will have a huge time rethinking - What Am I Doing! So best move is, spend, and forget. and let live haha.
