As far as I know, it depends on ur setup. Most ppl change 20% water monthly or maybe every 2 months provided they have nice CO2. Some manage to maintain it without changing water for half a year or so. Still, you gotta add water once in awhile anyway. Seems to me my tank drys up pretty quickly. Anyone care to share some tips bout less changing water or making dripping tank? Nice pics btw.  rclxms.gif

as far as i know, for a healthy tank....
we, aquascaper normally did this

weekly water change ~30 - 40%

QUOTE(michanz @ Nov 29 2009, 11:00 AM)
i didnt do water change for about 8months edi =X always just add water! my water can evaporate like an inch a week.. how do i slow dat down? i just did a rescape last week so i finally did a waterchange. a whole 40% waterchange

Hi Bro, i'm new here...I've been keeping freshwater fish for quite sometime...
now kinda interested in aquascaping coz it seems nice & eyecatching. i've got few question as per below...

1) how frequent do you guy change the water? let say i'm gonna setup Freshwater fish+planted tank. does the water easily get clouded??
2) how frequent do u guy trim the plant on average??
*
welcome to aquatic plant layout world...

1) normally we practise weekly water change of 30 - 40%, water get clouded? so far, nope... with a stable and well develope system, ie bacteria system is healthy, u hardly get this...

2) depends on the plants type... high light plants, stem plants, i will trim roughly every2~3months....

hope will answer ur doubt...
anything not clear, please do ask....

Hmm, seems you guys does that water change 30~40% weekly. Mine is sort of shrimp tank. Did some research and found that to maintain good bacteria cycle for my shrimps I cant do that much water changes. Maybe I should do erm, 20% every 2 or 3 weeks (now I still doing 20% monthly)? How does that affect to the plants for you guys? So far my plants seems fine since most of them are moss, easy to take care of. But cant be sure for long term view like maybe 1 or 2 years.
*
for my crs tank, i mostly top up water, and wc 10% every 2~3wk....

May somebody roughly estimate for me what's the budget look like in order to setup decent medium light 2 feet planted tank with basic equipment/material (soil, fertz)...excluding plants/fish...
Also wish anybody to enlighten me on the specification of equipment/material (i.e. filter flowrate, light wattage/temperature etc) to maintain a 2 feet planted tank ???  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif
*
ok, based on my own experience and advice....

1) soil
1pack of 9L ADA aquasoil, amazonia if u ask me... RM88~90

2) hardscape
rocks - depends
drift woods - depends
i would say probably budget is around RM100 for both if go for better visual

3) Filteration
600L/h canister filter will be good.
if want cheap, go for KW brand dophin C700
http://www.kwzone.com/products/links/canister%20filter.htm
i would say around RM150~180

4) lighting?
depends of what type of plants....
low light? high light?
standard 2ft = 60x30x30cm =54L
around 50~60w lighting is ok
around RM200 if buy ready made (nicer appearance)
DIY might cost you ~RM80 (PLL 32w x 2)

5) temperature
the best is around 25 degree...
there are 2 ways
a) cheaper way, DIY PC fan, cost you around RM50
b) more efficient way, compressor type chiller, you can go survey the price for new 1, or 2nd hand.

i can think all of that at the moment, please do ask if anything not clear..

thanks
yujin

That's good one bro  thumbup.gif anyway i'm going for medium light (not to high, not to low)...
i'm kinda going to budget planted tank as beginner...something basic to start and learn with...
do wanna take risk straight away go for high end equipment later if failed will greatly feel depress  laugh.gif

For Lightning and Water Temperature, i'm goin to DIY the stuff...
i noticed nobody mentioned about CO2 supply...do i need CO2 supply with this medium light 2 feet tanks???
*
yes, DIY co2 can, go google out the ingredient, i forgot liao..
but not stable, cant control buble per seconds...

QUOTE(silverbolt143 @ Dec 3 2009, 12:11 PM)
Compared to non-integrated PLL bulb, can i used the integrated Spiral or PLET bulb..much more easier to DIY i guess...
the lightning effect still same right for the same wattage?  sweat.gif
*
i tried before, so far so good...

QUOTE(adrian7386 @ Dec 3 2009, 04:28 PM)
i got a 3 litre co2 with manual regulator up for sale...price rm150 can nego...pm me if u interested...location: penang

my 3ft tank is custom made one, people give one, size is 3ft x 1.5ft x 1ft height.
haha, in my mind i plan like this, the tank size is either 1ft square or standard tank.
shirmp to keep is either crs or rcs lo.

*
good, tat size good for iwagumi....
if arrangement correct, u will have a view of long tank, very nice...

1ft square to keep rcs, no problem at all...
to keep crs, maybe the water volume a bit low and parameter will change easily...

haha... i know that as well, but the thing is the money to set it up... too much already.
i do think of setting it up, but then need lots of soil... hmm...

but then i hardly found 1ft square tank. mostly is smaller than that.
like 1ft x 0.5ft x 0.5ft, so i dunno how will it become if use those size tank.
i know the parameter will change easily, but then what you mean about the water volume a bit low?
*
custom made 1ft x 1ft x 1ft la then....

low water volume lo... 30 x 30 x 30 ~27L

as u can see the open/close is beside hose connector..

i just found that 'close/open' thing can be remove from the cover.. maybe it function is to allow water filling without open the filter cover..  biggrin.gif make job easy after this...
*
sometimes there is air inside the canister which might make the pump not fully function...
the cover is for u to top up water till full, so that the pump can fully function...
if those use hydor P series before, they also have this function...
