Min. Schnauzers shed very little, so 'color change' doesn't work like that. What I've read is that as we groom them by clipping their coats (as most groomers do, unless specified), the color will tend to be lighter because we clip through the undercoat (Min. Schnauzers have a double coat - the undercoat is soft, while the upper coat is harsh and wiry), causing the color to lighten considerably because the upper coat is lost. The 'proper' way to groom a Min. Schnauzer is through hand stripping, but it's not easy to do, very tedious and very costly if it's done at the groomers. Only show dogs get hand stripped anyways, so since most of our dogs are pet dogs, the easiest way is just to clip. smile.gif Let me show you Scottie's coat color change (I only noticed it now after so long...hahaha!):

Carrying to the bathroom should be fine for the first few days (so that she gets there in time) I think. Never a big harm to try...whatever that works for you to get her to understand that the bathroom is her place to go, try it smile.gif If it doesn't work, try another method. There's no one sure way to train a dog. smile.gif

She's so cute! What's her name? You never did seem to reveal her name...haha! tongue.gif

Actually how do I know if my puppy is obese ??? It looks ok to me but my neighbour (who owns 2 silky terriers) was shocked at the size of my 3 month old schnauzer.

FYI, Max was the biggest and most active in a litter of 3 puppies !!!

Silky Terriers are small dogs compared to the Min. Schnauzer...although Min. Schnauzers are small, but they are slightly bigger than Silkys definitely wink.gif From what I've read, the average weight for a Min. Schnauzer ranges from about 5-7kg, but that's just the average...there are definitely smaller and bigger sized dogs, so what I usually do is to feel the sides of the dog (along the ribs).

The ideal situation would be that you need to apply a bit of pressure (like maybe pushing on a soft pillow) to be able to feel the ribs. If by just feeling lightly already can feel the ribs, it means your pup is too thin. If you apply pressure also cannot feel the ribs, it means that he is overweight. The actual weighing of the dog I feel is not that accurate, coz a lot of dogs grow at different rates. And I don't believe that feeding less will make the dog's size smaller (I get that a lot from pet shops or weird breeders). It just makes them malnourished, which is even worse than having a slightly bigger sized dog. Size is more towards genetics and breeding..the pup can't help it if they're small or big. If the pup is meant to be big, no matter how less we feed also they will eventually be that size, so I would say monitor your pup constantly...and a healthy dog is DEFINITELY much better than a 'small-sized but actually malnourished' dog.

Sigh. I always tot tat Max is a pretty good n smart dog. From day one he didnt make much noise at night. He will make noise when i put him back into his cage n even then will stop after a while if i ignore him. He will make noise when he hears me n it is feedin time. Or when he wants to go out to poo n pee. Like tat neighbour also complain and said my dog make noise 24/7.Even said tat i dont know how to look after the dog n never pacify the dog when it is making noise. But wat i read works ie Max keep quiet after a while if i ignore him. Anyway Max will get his 3rd vaccination 2day and after 2 weeks should be able 2 go out n start his obedience classes. Still undecided where to go tho. Most convenient location is ikano but tat is more
expensive

STRESSED out man !!!!

If yes, what is the prevention?

Well, training takes a lot of patience, so just keep on telling him to bring the ball. Just because he learnt the first few commands quite fast doesn't mean he will catch on so fast for other commands, as we might have confused him or he hasn't understood what he has to do just yet.

What the vet said about the coat's texture is quite true. If we hand strip the coat, it will be more wiry and harsh compared to a clippered coat. That's one of the characteristics of the breed. But because most of us clipper our dog's coats, they won't have that harsh and wiry texture compared to a hand stripped coat. I kind of agree with the vet. Colors are genetic, and they're mostly there from birth till the end of their lives, so...I'm not so sure if it will change color. Perhaps other black & silver pups' owners can share about it more.

I haven't heard of the Seaweed Extract before, but since you have already bought it and you feel it can help with Sam's development, it's worth a try. There are a lot of variations in the coat color of the Min. Schnauzer. Even though it was mentioned that it's black and silver, the color shades might differ from one dog to the other. Same goes with salt and pepper colors (I have seen so many salt and pepper shades that are totally different from Scottie's markings), so it's not necessary that black and silver has to mean an all black and some 'silver' colored markings. But to what extent the markings would constitute black and silver or otherwise, that I do not know. I guess you'd have to refer to more experienced breeders or books.

Added on October 12, 2009, 8:39 pmI noticed that people asked about the gathering date. Perhaps we could have suggestions as to which date and place we should hold the gathering? When we have suggestions, then we could all vote to decide when and where to go smile.gif

How about the end of October (31st) or 1st Nov? Same place, at Central Park?

hello, ray.. sorry for so late reply ur msg (GOSH!! my nonstop uni work killin me ) plus need care of sam routine... real no time for gathering mentioned before.. so sorry unable updated any news regard gathering o sam perhaps ...

Thank ur details above again..ya.. i searched info regard hand stripping coat.. result in harsh and wiry compare smooth one... anyway i hav inquire a pet saloon that quite familliar n often visit.. the owner help me ask outsider breeder willing to hand stripping for sam.. but cost RM400 for whole body, need wait till 8month as he told me... but u hav any idea, "whether strip 1 time can result in harsh coat ?".." and " able result entire life harsh coat aldo clip for next time o future ?"...

But anyway jus curious , cz i dont think will go for hand strip cz sam only home pet plus RM 400 too costly... better i use buy lot treat and supplement for sam..haha

Good news share with u, ray.. Sam grow black fur out, phew glad... then i took him for 1st time grooming since puppy to cut away all the brownish fur.. OMG!!!.. (not the groomer fault) but the puppycut look when applied on sam jus feel weird for me.. i totally missed the previous sam look (lot of fur more cute).. Now need to wait few month for the fur grow back ..anyway u know any nice grooming saloon provide quality cut for example lot of cuttin style for schnauzer beside the normal puppy cut o the Zebra horse cut

LOL....I'm not Ray. tongue.gif Please call me Audrey smile.gif

I haven't actually sent Scottie for a stripping session, so I have no idea if a one time strip will result in the coat being harsh and wiry their whole life. But I THINK (theoretically) a one time strip would not cause the fur to do that, because when we clip the coat, both layers of coat will be gone...even if we have stripped it before, what will grow back will be the softer coat anyways because that is the inner coat. The harsh wiry coat will be the outer coat (which will grow much later...maybe not so much also if we keep clipping the coat). I have seen a show Min. Schnauzer before though, and their coat is not really that harsh like say, a wiry JRT...it's just more firm compared to Scottie's kind of coat, in my opinion. But like you said, stripping is VERY expensive (and it cannot be done all in one sitting, especially if it's the first time) so no point in doing it I guess...

That's cool that Sam's coat is what you wanted smile.gif Grooming is like that I think...the first time I sent Scottie for grooming, I didn't tell the groomer to leave his long eyelashes...they cut it so short he didn't look like my Scottie. haha! Needless to say I didn't send him back there again! The groomer I send Scottie to is quite good...I've been sending Scottie there since he was about 5-6 months old. But I've only let Scottie have the usual Schnauzer cut...not sure if that's what you meant by 'puppy cut', but I'm quite traditional in the sense that I prefer to have my dog look the way they should look breed-wise (or at least look about 90% that part tongue.gif). I am not partial to the 'Horse cut' style, but a lot of people like it, so to each their own I guess. I like Scottie the way he is now smile.gif

fyi, the neighbour is a chinese !!

aiyo, stressed out the whole weekend. i was trying to find a suitable place for the dog. at one point he ended up in a dog crate in my bedroom. but the sound of him scratching the bottom of the crate kept me awake. anyway, i think max is settled at his new sleeping place. slept 2 nights in row without any noise. the neoghbour must have made the stories up or is hearing things. actually the noise is made by max when he wants to go pee and poop or at before feeding time at 6 plus am. he sleep thru the night . but neighbor claims that the dog is making noise 24/7 . the most hurting bit is the accusation that i dunno how to keep a dog and if i know that dogs have to be sent for obedience classes . how to send b4 a dog is fully vaccinated !!!!

another ang moh neighbour said max is pretty quiet unlike my previous yorkie poodle which i had to return to my friend after 3 days. that dog (an adult dog) was making noise day and night.
