Hi everyone, I got myself a mini schnauzer already, she's 3 months old. Arrived at my home on Saturday. Got a few questions to ask, hoping to learn from experienced owners here.

Firstly, my MS is very attached to me, everywhere I go she will follow. Even when she sleeps, she will make sure have body contact with me. If she didn't see me she will make noise. Problem when we go out like for dinner or even when no one at home, we will put her in the cage, she will bark non-stop n jumping around in the cage....how do I train her to understand and get used to be alone at times? I worried she might be panicky when we are not home which is not good at all.

Secondly, I got her the water drinker which is the one we attach to the cage wall, water will flow when her tongue touches the outlet (ball bearing). She did not know how to drink from it and whole day wont drink any water, turns out, she will drink when I pour her water into her bowl. How do I train her to drink from the drinker?

Hi yupio, congrats on your new pup! Post up some photos of your pup when you can, yeah? What's her name?

I guess there is no real 'solution' to your first question...I don't know if we can 'train' them not to be worried when we're not around. I certainly have not done that with Scottie. What I did do was just make him as comfortable as I can for him when I go out. Maybe you could leave an old shirt with your scent in the cage with your pup. Let her be occupied with a toy? They have to learn that there will be times that they will be alone, so you'd just have to endure the crying thing for some time. Let your neighbours know that your pup is very new and is still adjusting so that they don't complain so much. Also, I've learnt that when we go out, don't say a long goodbye to the pup. Just go out like it's a normal thing. When we tell them goodbye and stuff, they'll know it's a sign that you're leaving and will just start whining and all that.

When I introduced Scottie to the water bottle, I took a few drops of water from the bottle onto my finger and let him lick the water off. Then slowly lead him to the water bottle (while he's licking the finger) and press against the little ball thingy at the water bottle to let the water flow out a little (all this while he's licking the finger). Eventually, release the finger so he'll lick the water bottle itself. Repeat a few times, and he seemed to get it. You could give that a try. smile.gif But I find that Scottie likes to drink from water bowls more than the bottle (maybe coz the bottle dispenses very little water at a time, and he's lazy to work hard for water tongue.gif) so I eventually switched him to a Yogi water bowl, which worked fine with me. smile.gif

Thanks bro for the tips n advice, will try it out especially the water bottle thing...one thing for sure, my puppy sure drinks very little water even on bowl. hmm.gif

Thanks!! I got it from a direct owner that has 4 adult schnauzers in the household....one of them got pregnant by accident (unplanned) hence they're letting them go and also no MKA despite their parents having MKA coz they did not apply for the MKA prior to wub.gif

Yup yup, rite now she has two toys which she is not very keen...will go n get more this weekend for her tongue.gif

Well...all in all hopefully she gets used to it (being alone at times) the sooner the better...heart pain hearing her cries....which is pretty loud too lol.

Her parents are light grey (salt n pepper) and undergone obedience training b4 and they certainly well behaved and has good temperament also has nice n healthy coat n all...hoping my puppy will grow up to be like them.

Another thing though....the potty training thingy...her previous owner did not train her anything but when she comes to my home she sleeps in the same room as me on the floor though...she never climbs up to the bed which was good..and my room having attached bathroom, she knows the bathroom and did all her pee in there without any training...so far been consistent for 2 nights...hope she is consistent all the way...

On the other hand, when she was in the kitchen or top floor room...both also has bathroom...she never did her pee n poo in those bathroom...but everywhere and especially on the rug we usually put at the entrance of bathroom....hope I can train her up to be able to understand there's 3 bathroom she can use n use the nearest at all times doh.gif

Here's the pictures as promised...noticed she is black with lots of brown shades...funny her parents are light grey though...probably colour will change when her adult coat comes out. hmm.gif

Ahh...LYN server unable to attach pics for now...will edit to add them up later..

LOL! You're welcome bro, but I'm not a guy...tongue.gif Try to encourage your pup to drink more, especially if your pup is on a kibble diet. Even if she doesn't drink a lot, ensure that she has access to water at all times smile.gif

I think she probably has gotten used to your room's adjacent bathroom...when she's in a different place (your kitchen / other rooms) it smells different from the room she slept in, so maybe she doesn't know where to go. It takes time, but whenever you see her signs of wanting to pee or poo, try and get her to go at the bathroom(s) you want her to go. The more consistent you are, the faster she will get the picture...hope that helps!

Ohh sorry sorry my bad...umm...this forum thingy...i get lots of guys using "Female" on his avatar...forgive me missy! tongue.gif

Yup indeed my pup is on kibble but i add some water to soften the kibble plus a bit of milk (milk powder for puppies) so at least it got some liquid from thre but her pee still pretty yellow...gotta somehow get her to drink more hmm.gif

I try to be consistent but she pee kinda fast...dun "smell n turn" very long....I always did not manage in time...and i just take her to the bathroom instead of lead her there...coz once she starts to release even u push her is no use le. doh.gif

Haha, I didn't know there are guys who do that hmm.gif so weird!

Well, training is like that I guess...we usually won't get it 'right' the first few times, but I'm sure after a few more tries, you'll be able to notice her signs more...now she's been only with you a few days, so give it about another few days to a week...I'm sure you'll be able to tell. wink.gif But the best times to let her know where to go are after meal times and after sleep time. Since pups can't hold their pee quite long, they're quite consistent at these times...also if she's playing, bring her to the bathroom every 2-3 hours. You'll never know if she wants to pee or poo at the time. Saves the hassle of having to wait for her to actually want to go...but if she doesn't want to go after you've brought her there for about 5 mins, just let her play again and try in the next 2 or 3 hours.

yup yup...i guess there's only guys that uses the "Female" thingy. It would be a 'rare breed' if gals we're to use "Male" avatar. brows.gif

I tried the after meal n after sleep ones...and bring her to the toilet. well...she just walk around and sleep there...or lie there...then i let her out...the sec. she walk out of the toilet...she'll pee or poo on the mat in front of the toilet doh.gif Guess I'll have to give her more time to understand things around..afterall she's just 3 months old. Then maybe it's time to remove the mat in front of the toilet...haha! The smell is already there, so she probably assumes that it's her place to pee or poo. For beginner training, I think it's best if you stick to one particular place for her to pee and poo (the bathroom attached to your room). After she has been consistent with that bathroom, you could try it with another bathroom...maybe introducing too many places at a time might confuse her. To simplify it, just use one bathroom for her first? But yeah, it takes time to house break your pup...smile.gif Upload photos of your pup soon! What's her name again? You didn't mention her name...smile.gif

On the colour...i was told of the change too...but funny coz rite now, the colour is really black...how it changes to grey is really surprising...does it shed off the old coat and grows the new coat which is grey?

I think u r rite, I have to remove those mats and keep to one bathroom...thing is she only knows how to climb up the stairs and didn't dare to climb down...so kinda hard for her to only go to one bathroom rclxub.gif

Do u think its ok if I were to carry her to the bathroom at the kitchen everytime after her meals or when she wakes...then only let her go by her own when she's in my room? This way will i confuse her??

OK as promised...heres the pics.

Min. Schnauzers shed very little, so 'color change' doesn't work like that. What I've read is that as we groom them by clipping their coats (as most groomers do, unless specified), the color will tend to be lighter because we clip through the undercoat (Min. Schnauzers have a double coat - the undercoat is soft, while the upper coat is harsh and wiry), causing the color to lighten considerably because the upper coat is lost. The 'proper' way to groom a Min. Schnauzer is through hand stripping, but it's not easy to do, very tedious and very costly if it's done at the groomers. Only show dogs get hand stripped anyways, so since most of our dogs are pet dogs, the easiest way is just to clip. smile.gif Let me show you Scottie's coat color change (I only noticed it now after so long...hahaha!):

Carrying to the bathroom should be fine for the first few days (so that she gets there in time) I think. Never a big harm to try...whatever that works for you to get her to understand that the bathroom is her place to go, try it smile.gif If it doesn't work, try another method. There's no one sure way to train a dog. smile.gif

Scottie's colour seems to get lighter and lighter

Max is the same colour as Scottie when it was puppy . Does that mean it that Max will turn lighter in colour as well ?

Yeah, it depends on the dog's genes and a little on how we groom I think. Scottie's light colors will show after he has gone through a grooming session...when his fur grows longer, the color is somewhat like his 1 year old coat color. Darker, but not as dark as when he was a pup. I don't know what his parents' colors look like, so I don't know if he'll get more light in time to come...

ya..whn we groom schnauzer...using clipper...their coat will turn soft compared to hand stripping.. for show schnauzer..since they fall in terrier group, hence for show, they need to b hand stripped ...strictly no clipping as clipping actually clip away all the wired coat. so a nice schnauzer coat will rough, hard....

you can actually try it yourself but slowly plucking the fur in small amount...Normally its tooks up few weeks times for the schanuzer to be 100% stripped....
dog 's coat color change over the time.....so no worries....there are few color enhancement products in the market but i dont think it's really works to enhance and maintance the color... for me, i think the causes of the color fading can be either their food intake or their gene,...

dog 's coat color change over the time.....so no worries....there are few color enhancement products in the market but i dont think it's really works to enhance and maintance the color... for me, i think the causes of the color fading can be either their food intake or their gene,...

I actually don't really believe that a dog's coat color will change over time, unless it's due to something that was done to them. What colors that they were born with, I believe it's the same color throughout. It's like saying we can change hair color over time...haha! We can, but only if we color it...our natural hair color is the one that we're born with.
