I'm organising something of a flea market for used shoes this Thursday (Thaipusam day) in my SoHo in Empire City, Damansara Perdana. For sellers, instead of meeting up individually with each potential buyer, you get access to multiple potential buyers in a single session. For those interested in buying, you get to try on many shoes before committing.

Drop me a PM if you have shoes you'd like to divest from.

Barker is entry level same as loake.then you have cheaney on the next step

Trickers is pretty up there but they specialise more into boots and country shoes.their shoes are more chunky and rounded.C&J I would say the highest in your list

Hey thanks for the info.

I kinda like Barker's shoes(based on what i see in their website, im a total nubie in this shoe stuff). Probably because they have such a large collection to pick from.

Being entry level though, how would they compare to c&j for example...i mean what kind of differences in quality to be expected?

Would it be weird to buy a penny loafers from these english brands or just get from pedro enough hahaha

A suede or brown penny loafer would be lovely, you can wear it with jeans or even business casual

Barker's designs are much more 'fashion forward'.For shoes i would advise getting classic designs as these shoes will outlast any current fashion trend

Barker likes to use shiny corrected grain leather and a lot of their shoes are made in india.Nothing wrong with that but buying from english brands one would expect made in England shoes. higher-end brands such as C&J uses better quality leather that wont crease as much, takes a better shine and generally last longer.

I've had a pair of loakes passed down from my dad, the construction was solid for a pair of 10(20?)+ year old shoes but the uppers cracked due to wear on the creased parts.

Thanks buddy. That helps! Now what about handmade? Are they worth the extra money compared to a brand's regular line of product?

My next question now would be, will the shoes be cheaper if bought straight from london?

Unless they are on sale, highly unlikely for it to be cheaper than P Lal back in Malaysia.

Which is why I recommended brands not available here. Those are all mid-range brands btw, better quality than Loake or Barker which I consider entry-level.

If you do go for Barker, please steer clear of their Creative Collection.

Even if you are put off by the standard prices, drop into their stores for a fitting. Note what sizes and lasts work for you. Later you can buy online with confidence.

It's not Malaysia in general. It's just P Lal that sells their shoes very cheaply. C & J have even stopped supplying P Lal because they felt their shoes were being sold too cheaply.

Carmina is a definite step up from Loake (the premium 1880 range) . I don't own a Barker but from what I've seen it is at par with Loake at best, but probably worse.

However there have some disconcerting reports at the Carmina styleforum thread recently with some real shoddy workmanship. All 3 of my pairs are great though. My next pair would probably still be a Carmina. Thinking of a burgundy calfskin or Tobacco suede (love the tobacco colour).

You can try Carmina at WJ & Co at Bangsar shopping center. They are priced a bit higher than the website but at least you can get to try it. With the ringgit in the doldrums it is not that much more expensive.

(Hint: Carmina prices their Inca-lasted shoes about €35 more than other lasts. But at WJ all shoes are priced the same. At the current exchange rate and factoring in customs taxes the RM 1,880 price tag at WJ is on par with the price from Carminas website. They carry a double monk in snuff suede and brown calfskin. Both look fantastic. In my opinion the Inca last is a stunningly classy last. )

The good thing about Barker, loake and grenson is that in the UK you would usually find them at a deep discount

Comparing Herringshoes.com and P.Lal the prices are almost the same with shipping but of course you can try on specific models at P.Lal

If you're going to the UK and looking for shoes.why don't you go to their factory stores?
