Oh. Hi coursemate then biggrin.gif

Kinda nervous because Dr Lakshmi (our anatomy queen) kept on mentioning about books and all. Will probably get Gray's and the colour atlas first.

You've got a stethoscope already?

I suggest you buy this - its DAMN GOOD - verified by me~!! Approved and Endorsed by our Medicine head of department~!!

It's the first Littmann stet I ever owned after all these years. Decided to purchase it after extensive comparison with my old stet and Littmann Classic II S.E.

Breath and heart sounds have never been so clearer~!!

This stet you won't regret buying. It's almost triple the price of Littmann Classic II S.E but its well worth it~!!
It has 7 years warranty and custom name engraving can be done~

Good investment in a Good stet~!!

I have given my review of this stet, read some reviews from others that have used this if you still have doubts:

Nah, in wards I just carry a clipboard, write down stuffs that i don't know of and head back and study. They do carry around oxford handbook or TG, but that's all I think.

They were planning to bulk order but I'm just going to ask the 3M rep the price if I order individually.

If too expensive then Amazon it is biggrin.gif

First year medical students will have physiology - A stet will be needed in practical physiology.
Invest in a good stethoscope that will last through out medical school and beyond~

Littmann Classic II S.E vs Littmann Master Cardiology - if you have some savings, use some to invest in the Master cardiology version, I guarantee it will be much better than the Classic version.

Here is another review of the Master Cardiology stet:

http://nursinglink.monster.com/products/pr...ogy-stethoscope

(Must be extra careful with Littmann's stet since they are not cheap - losing one will really suck)

Wow, just wow!

So LUC will send or hire academic staff in the three respective offshore unis? Why do I doubt this? It seems LUC is like a shelf college to me.

From "monkeygirl" in IMU thread. Re-posted here as useful info.

"feeling bored writing my report so i'm back here looking at lowyat forums.
lol.... anyway, i'm studying in leeds now after transferring thru the imu-pms route in 2010. 4th yr now.

regarding ur qw if med graduates from russell grp makes a difference for f1&2... NO
they recently revamped the f1/2 applications and it's now point based (lol.. like everything in the UK. visa application is also point based)
so you get points for having published research, presenting in conferences, etc (points are hard to come by ;( )
not too sure about the details but i think they do look at your academic standing in uni as well and award points based on where you are in your batch.
the whole application form is like an essay paper as well. they ask you things like: describe a situation where you've shown leadership skills in 500 words or something. and they give u points based on ur answers.

then starting from my batch, we all have to sit for a situational-judgement exam thing where we get points based on our scores. i heard it's an mcq paper where they give you a situation [eg: u overheard ur colleague insulting the patient with another colleague. do you: 1) report him to GMC (medical council in UK) 2) talk to him 3) report him to your consultant 4) ignore ]

so yea... ur points will then indicate how likely you'll get a competitive deanery/program (eg: london) "

Looks like more n more requirements will be implemented going forward in a excess demand situation where "winners" takes the priority.

Sure it wont make a difference if you are from a top tier university or a lower tier one? Academic performance and training WILL make a difference.

It has been shown that medical graduates from Oxbridge and Edinburgh at least consistently outdo all the other universities in post-grad examinations.

that is more an indication of the calibre of students selected, than any intrinsic superiority of the syllabus/teaching of the med school......

when up to 25% of a levels students get the aaa necessary for admission, there WILL be a significant difference between the ones at the 75th and 99th percentile......and that will show academically.... biggrin.gif

hello all, not a med student here, but I need your opinions
I wanted to buy a stethoscope as a gift for a friend, well she already has a Littmann stet, but she didn't like the color (she ordered other color but since it's out of stock, so by default she got black). I was thinking to buy her another color, but not Littmann, how about other brand? I search online, there's this one named Ultrascope, got her fav color & it's custom made, can choose your own design, I think she will like it. I'm thinking to order it for her, but I need to know if Ultrascope is a good one, coz usually students bought Littmann right. Besides, she already had Littmann, so I'm thinking why not buying her other brand, she can use them alternately. Any feedback on Ultrascope brand?

edit : btw, is it allowed to have such bright color stet in the hospital? if not then no point buying her the stet tongue.gif

You would have got better replies in "Kopitiam" or from the relevant vendor.

I am not sure if this rating system is fair imho, the "english composition" has the most weightage in the rating system hence anyone with borderline passing rate, as long as you can crap your way out in english, you would probably score higher than a 99th centile student who is weaker in english (well, ie, people with english as their second language).

An oxbridge 50th centile student will probably be a 90th centile student if he/she is in some other med schools in the UK.

Sad but true.

you may be surprised to know that non-native speakers often perform better at english testings....and many of the imu-pms students are actually very good at their english.....just as long as it is not spoken english..... smile.gif

I'm afraid Kopitiam will give me improper replies no? I thought it's best to post here coz I would like to know from the students' experiences themselves (provided they've tried other brand than littmann sweat.gif )
If I ask the vendors of course they will only pinpoint all the good things sad.gif

stethoscopes are NOT and should not be fashion statements.....and if she is really a medical student, she has more important things to worry about than the colour of her stets.....and this is NOT a commodity where one 'tries' every brand there is...littmann is the gold standard, and practically all me med students will stick to it....
