QUOTE(SilverSpoon @ Sep 29 2009, 09:24 PM)
Hi to all hamster lover here,

I brought my hamster to Animal Medical Centre (Jln Tun Razak) to check on a lump growth on my hamster's lower lips. The doctor did mentioned something like 'pus'. He said the causes for the lump is most probably because of infection due to scratches or bite (by other hamster. For your info, i got 2 hamsters living together).
The hamster needs to do operation. The operation cost is approximately RM250.
Is it consider reasonable or expensive? Does anybody have any other recommended places for this kind of operation. The operation will be done in the morning. Then later in the evening can bring back the hamster.
So, the hamster is not required to stay overnight.

Anybody have any comment?

Last time my fren's hamster also had the same problem i think...they call is abscess (collection of pus)...also below the jaw, midline area...somewhere there la..
He was put under general anaesthesia, then drainage of the abscess was done... This procedure, together with antiseptic and antibiotic, costed less than rm100... Hamster was also not required to stay overnight..

but then this is in Kuching.. Maybe other places the cost is higher.. Wait for other forumers to give u input on this la k? Just sharing some experience..

Hmm...in my oppinion it is better to give milk which is made specifically for animals...like for cat/puppy? If not mistaken, they can't tolerate lactose and may cause diarrhea...is it? I've tried to find a reference for this issue, but failed to. Sorry. From wat i've been told, better to give milk for animal. Hope other forumers can confirm this.

Thanks a lot for the comment odd_mochi,
Yea, i think my hamster's condition is quite similar to your fren's hamster.
The vet also said that my hamster will be put under anaesthesia, but the saddest part is that it'll cost me around RM250. cry.gif

Maybe like what you said, because of different location, the prices differ.
Anyway, if there's no other places/option, then i'll have to bring my hamster there this coming Saturday morning.

Do you know what is the reason / causes for this so called "abscess"?

Lawrence93, i don't know what are the green round thingy but you should not put two male hamster in the same cage in the 1st place! There's an extremely high chance they will fight & end up wounding each other... sigh...

Most probably its like wat the vet told you. Wound from scratches, or bites from other hamster..get infected and become abscess.. Good luck in searching for an alternative vet with cheaper charge...! For now, just make sure ur hammie does not get into fight with the other hammie, and make sure it eats well...clean cage a bit oso...while waiting for the operation.. All the best!

Thanks for the concern odd_mochi,
I've already separated them.
I've already given up searching for other vet.
Tomorrow morning i'm gonna bring her to do the operation.
I just hope she's ok until tomorrow morning.

We all told you before syrians cannot be kept together rite? But you ignored us and wanted to keep it your own way because your experience tells you they do fine together. If Syrians can stay together, then wouldn't major pet websites and hamster care books say syrians are communal instead of highlighting the most important fact that they are solitary? The green thing you say could be flesh rotting into an infection.... if that is the case because simply putting it as "a Major Big Round Thing" how would we know what kinda round thing it is? It could be a round green M&N on it. A picture would help but it would be better you bring to a vet straight away.

They r all saying dat bcos u din act like u r listening to their advices.1st of all,not enuff of space is an excuse.U shudnt take care of so many hamster at once if u dun the MINIMUM requirements.Syrian r solitary,so i guess u learn ur lesson ady.If u cant take care of so many it is better to put some for adoption/sale.BTW u bathed ur hamster or just wipe it wiv damp cloth?I hope u state it clearly so other wont give advice again towards ur action.R u sure there is no vet for hamster in ur area?Just normal vet will do doesnt nid to go for "Hamster Vet"...

For the scolding part, well my 1st sentence said it.Experienced or not is base on ur commitment towards the animal u taking care of.No1 will scold u if u really do wat we hoping for, right?Sharing experience of cos is really good as we can learn frm each other, but not sharing the same mistake.

It is better that u can show us IMPROVEMENT so there wont be anymore flame smile.gif

I was about to sleep but I saw this reply. Yes, some members here may be harsh but then that's how people are when they see post like this.

But like *FallenAngel* quoted, you did keep saying stuff that would bring up syrians in pairs or communal, and everyone has given their replies with the word solitary in it. So no reason? They all had a reason because of your previous post on keeping syrians together.

Firstly when keeping a pet you have to be ready to bear whatever that comes up. You put 2 males together because you needed a cage for a pregnant hamster. If you already know it is pregnant, why never go find a temporary cage or even an empty storage box? Why risk putting 2 syrians together? Or did the pregnancy go unplanned? Then once the babies are born, how are you going to house them? If I were you, emergency case I would just place the syrian in a large deep pail and straight go out to the nearest shopping mall to get a storage box.

Any vet can treat an infection wound. All it needs is antibiotics and iodine to treat it. This kinda thing doesn't need an expert Hamster vet. When left without proper treatment, if unlucky it can become gangrene and cause more problems. If got maggots in the wound how? A vet that doesn't treat hamsters knows how to take out maggots and treat the wound. Many of us here just dunno what you are planning coz you keep getting pets and pets but then why keep many if you cannot even buy or get another housing for a syrian. You are acting emotional now base on people's words but you have to look in the mirror now and face reality. Why did you adopt or buy so many pets if you cannot afford to buy cages? I'm also a student, I too have many pets. When I had 12 Syrians, I had 4 1.5ft tanks and 2 2ft tanks and 4 cages. I saved up money to get them and when emergency case I borrowed money to get cages. When I was breeding hamsters I bought so many storage boxes because they were cheaper than cages. Even Reanne is a student, and when she was breeding Syrians, she had more storage boxes than all of mine combined now. It's planning.

People here share, but then people already said syrians are solitary and you come in and say you put 2 syrians together and 1 got a wound. You think we won't act by scolding? And must we know your background? Meaning we must check your facebook or whatever to know more? That got nothing to do with this.

We know you love pets, but honestly, think first from our point of view. Wouldn't you be mad if someone bought syrians and suddenly 1 lost it's leg or went blind from a fight? I would, we all would. So now you learn.

And do the right thing. Even if 2 females can live together, PLEASE SEPARATE THEM. Don't take for granted and think nothing will happen. I still cannot imagine how you can keep 8 syrians in 4 cages..... to me that is just not enough space.
