This seems like a nice plasma tv from samsung.

You can read more about the nice features on this new plasma here
Read the full spec here.

So far the review is pretty good. Reviews

WhatHifi Reviews

One major downside from one reviewer is that it tends to have image retention.

Samsung has been the leader in TV recently and i fully agree with that judging from the features and picture quality of their TVs. SAMSUNG have always manage to pack in tons of features that will put the japanese manufacturer to shame, however there is still one thing that made me shy away from samsung product and that is RELIABILITY. Most of the people i know recommend me to stay away from samsung products.

What do you guys think?

First impression on early hours of operation is that the black is blacked than S10. Colour seems 'deeper'.
Performance is much better than S10 early when the set is new. Of which i would describe early hours of S10 is awkward.
But I still find the colour of B650 a little bit un-natural compared to S10.
Wait till tv break in first as it's still new out of box.

I am being neutral here. Though many ppl are still skeptical about Korean products, but Samsung is the current leader in LCD.

That alone must meant something. Samsung being 1st, LG 2nd (yes, LG) and 3rd Sony followed by Sharp. This is the statistics currently.

I myself was not really a fan of Samsung, but now seems their PQ have exceed many expectations and cause quite a stir woldwide when they launch their thin LED series. This has got many ppl thinking and talking bout them. Seems they got their strategy right this time.

No such issue on S10. Just blur image during early panel hours which have improved a lot after break in.
Not sure how would this B650 flare... Now tho i got htpc, i cant use it on this B650 doh.gif

Actually panny plasma's also have this, its just not as bad. LG and Sammys are slightly worse. Panny's recover faster, sammy and lg takes a little longer. Phospor residue....Some people do not like to hear this, but Pioneer does fare very well in this regard.

Added on August 5, 2009, 12:01 amWhen i use TV with HTPC. Like downloading and go online surfing
It tends to have still image like sidebar, task bars, windows etc...
After a while, when i switched watching movie and concert or dark scenes, I see slight retention...

Cons on this unit...

- BUZZING freaking annoys me. If you have a small apartment like mine, the buzzing is really bad.

- Not as bright as LCDs. Somehow brightness during daylight looks faded. Especially fullscreen whites looks like grey.

- Screen flicker on bright spots/areas. Worst when PC mode.

- Hot.

- Astro PQ looks blurred. No problems with DVD or HD but Astro on 50' 1080p is too much. Better to stick to 720p plasmas where the upscaling do not need to stretch so much.

All the above problems I believe are inherit in Plasma technologies in general.

Now the good:
- Black levels
- Color accuracy

Both I can never tune it to match the Plasma compared to LCD. Typical LCD color accuracy and black levels are off.

I actually turn off all artificial processing to get the best results. No Dark enhancements, dynamic contrast, no sharpness, etc.

Avoid this if you watch Astro most of the time. This plasma only make justice on higher resolution feeds (DVD and above)...

Is this your 1st plasma? How many hours has it been running?

Plasma phospours take time to mature. It will become less blurred as time goes. Typically after the 100hr mark. Astro shd be better defined than LCD.

Fullscreen whites should never look grey. I believe it is some setting that you have not optimized. Fullscreen white will not be as bright as a LCD due to the nature of plasmas APL but it shd never look grey.

Screen flicker will reduce as the phospors age.

I have seen Astro on Full HD plasmas and they look very good. Give it time. On fast moving objects, it shd be much better than LCDs due to its refresh rates. There shd also be less macroblocking.

What are you trying to tune? LCD accuracy in terms of which parameter?

Samsung is supposed to be pretty good with SD broadcasts, better than Panny in this regard.

For Astro you might want to turn on some of the NR as the broadcasts is pretty crappy.

Pls let me know what you are looking for and maybe I can help.

You seem to be happy with the Samsung B650, but why do you say the Panny V will be better? Any experience with it?

From what I read, the V should be no different than the G except for the THX Mode. But that would be useless anyway as the G in asia has more adjustable pro options for calibration.

THX mode gets the primary colours spot on. Even the secondaries are almost accurate. I believe only magenta is off. The Z series fixes that.

Even though Panny sets have greyscale calibration options they do not have a CMS. No amount of tweaking can fix the problems with the colours on the Panny. THX mode is the best bet.

Yes it is. It's fine during low lighting situations (after 6pm). Daylight watching seems dimmer.

Fullscreen whites should never look grey. I believe it is some setting that you have not optimized. Fullscreen white will not be as bright as a LCD due to the nature of plasmas APL but it shd never look grey.

I would say dim. Somehow i suspect it's dynamic contrast. Here's how i test. I use PC HDMI as source so i can control.
> 1st test picture, 100% white. Screen dims, whites becomes greyish.
> 2nd test picture, 50% white, 50%. The whites becomes whiter.
> 3rd test picture, 10% white, 90% mix color. perfect whites.

No changes in TV settings. Just different type of picture. Even easier to see the effect of dimming when i drag a white window around the screen. When it fills up 100% of the screen, the white becomes grey. Can see the dynamic contrast ratio (or dimming) adjusting itself.

I have turn off all enhancements. May try to put on Game mode and let you guys know the result.

No complains on fast moving pictures at all. No ghosting whatsoever. Again, easiest to test by dragging window. However, horizontal bleeding seems to be a major problem. Eg, scrolling text / credits will exhibit image bleeding. That annoying as well.

The disappointments i have with this set is below:
- Scrolling bleed
- Buzzing
- Astro PQ
- 100Hz only works for 50Hz input. It will not optimize HTPC movies channeled via HDMI. The signal must be in 50Hz or 1080p/24Hz to take advantage of the cinema smooth function.

The likes i have:
- DLNA (even plays MKVs)
- Price / size ratio
- Color accuracy and black levels
- Thin (surprising for a plasma)

However, i don't think i can get a 50' LCD within the same price range with the blacks and color accuracy

I have curtain down which effectively can block sun light. biggrin.gif
PC HDMI input to "HDMI 2" - mode set to "PC". I don't see bleeding. It's much clearer than S10 on 1:1 pixel mapping.

I don't have fat wallet lah. Not like some of members here already have a few plasma tv at home lol.

Added on August 5, 2009, 1:46 pmThe last time i try out an LG plasma, i see image retention after leaving a still image on the screen for a min or so. That is too bad. I can accept if we get retention after leaving a still image on the screen for a long period of time like 30mins or 1hr but not when only after a few minutes.

For me i can try to avoid having any still image on the screen but there is too many programs that have channel logo and especially gaming which have hud that might cause permanent burn-in.

I hope the those new samsumg plasma owners can provide more info regarding how prone is the new set to burn-in

Agreed with you totally. My 8th gen Kuro had no retention issue at all. The orbiter really works! I did not even do proper burn in. Out of the box, it's been working like a horse and the picture is getting better everyday. If you mampu to pay 6000 for a korean plasma, might as well top up 2000+ more and get 508XG... guaranteed you will smile upto your ears smile.gif

Compared B650 and 508XG side by side at Best KLCC. 508XG still wins on PQ. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif
But B650 only lose marginally as 508XG PQ is more natural... sweat.gif I need full hd panel. So resort to B650.

I hope the those new samsumg plasma owners can provide more info regarding how prone is the new set to burn-in
*
Nowadays quite a lot hd program with 'transparent logo'. So it should be okay...
I will press 'red alarm' if my set 'kong'. So far it's still doing well. Just have to be cautious. unsure.gif
My wife watches a lot HD TVB series/programme, channel logo is on top right. So far no burn in yet.

Hope it does!

*
The screen dims when it displays a 100% white screen is the nature of plasmas. I don't think this will be a problem with actual content.
The power supplies are very high voltage, to display a full 100% white screen will cause the power supply to overload, hence the APL (Automatic Peak Limiter), this limits the supply to the power supply thus dimming the screen intensity. This will not happen in real life since there will always be some other colours/shadow in pictures. You will not see this in real life movies. If you are seeing it, there is an enchancement that is causing this.

Plasmas shd be calibrated with window screens. Bleeding is a non issue, there is some setting that is not optimized.

Buzzing, some plasmas do buzz, check and see if you move the plasma a little, there might be some resonance, if it is too high, ask them to come and check, it might be a power supply issue.

100Hz is meant to only work on 50Hz material only, there shd be no other use for 100Hz. HPTC is normally transmitting at 60Hz, you cannot use 100Hz for that since it is not a multiple. 60Hz material shd not judder anyway unless the source has a weird cadence.
Astro PQ, give it some time.

Does the buzzing sound seems normal?
Can it be heard easily? Or it just below average volume?

Nothing special...The curtain is just thick enough that it can block sunlight and make the room dark biggrin.gif
A re-post...this pic was taken around 6pm on first day of delivery:

Most plasmas have some sort of anti reflective coating on the glass, it really should not be so bad until u need to close everything. You will get used to it.

Right. I just like dark room... this B650 is better than S10 on reflection.
S10 seems a bit grey-ish in bright room.

I saw an older B450 sammy in senQ and i thought the PQ was excellent - solid contrast, deep black and nice color. I bet B650 must be much much nicer. Somehow the Panasonic displays there were all "grey" and even worst, the color was a bit orangish. Why Panasonic is like that ah?

The black of B650 is like 50% blacker than B450. laugh.gif
Best place to view it is at Harvey Norman Pavilion (with other plasma) or Best Denki KLCC (side by side with Pioneer 508)....

That's our bro said. I would take without second thought (provided good condition)
I guess most of us would do the same too laugh.gif

Added on August 6, 2009, 10:15 pmThis B650 image retention is quite SERIOUS.
For now it's big NO for HTPC usage.
Still image like 2-3 minutes would give a temporary mark on screen.
It disappeared after 10 minutes or so.
It's worrisome as I cant have peace of mind with it. doh.gif

Kuching is too far for me. If in KL boleh lah....I been hunting down this unit last 2 months. The F@cking Panasonic Malaysia withdraw this Model less than 9 months from our market. They are selling it cheap in Singapore. They are looking down on Malaysian mad.gif

My sister just bought 1 last week..Paid SGD $4,200 and came with free S$200 Takashimaya Voucher, a free Pana Blu Ray player BD30 & HDMI, 5 years warranty, a free Chronograph watch worth $200+, free wall bracket and installation of wall mount, free delivery, interest free installment by any credit card of one's choice (without surcharge). yawn.gif

Image retention is bad especially on white materials. Leave anything bright for 2 minutes and it's there.

However, it goes off quite quickly, within 20mins or so.

But the equation seems wrong. 2 minutes enjoyment, 20 minutes suffering.

Also quite annoyed with the buzzing. I'm sitting 6 feet away and i can hear it very loud. Any low volume / cut scene (when watching horror flicks before they scare the shit out of you) etc, definitely can hear it. Potong steam.

Quite a disappointment, if you ask me....

Yes it's obvious on white materials.
As for buzzing, someone in AVS commented it could be due the power cord/ supply. You can check on that.

Hi..just wanna get things right...why wanna use a premium shielded power cable?
All thats going through the cable is AC 240V at a frequency of 50hz.
Is the shielding used for the power cable or to stop interference caused by the power cable? hmm.gif

My guess is, the thicker the power cables are, the more it needs to be shielded to avoid it from interfering with other stuff? Right?

I remember one of the reviewer saying that the Samsung set is very prone to IR so I don't think that turning it on really helps as the problem is actually with the phospor itself.

IR if not careful will lead to permanent burn-in so best is to avoid this model. Just my opinion.

Anyway, glad to hear there is a function to to prevent the Image Retention issues.

Pls do update us on the Anti Burn In features, does it work? Any more burn in after 10mins of static pictures?

@ronaldjoe

I have seen both the B850 and S10 in comparison, but in bright lighting environment, where of course the S10 looks washed out.

Havent been able to seen them in dim lighting as all stores are bright.

So cannot really compare how they are in dim lighting. So cannot comment on the sharpness, brightness and details in that environment.

Just thinking the B850 is almost twice the price of the S10, is it really worth it?Considering it could have issues like buzzing and more IR than the panny.......

If twice the price, I would get 2 x S10 instead.... rclxms.gif
S10 have green tint, inaccurate colour issue.
S10 is still a bit grey-ish in normal room
S10 is only slightly inferior to B650 in dark room.
Personally I still like B650 more for the price that I get it.
I still 'feel' that V series is coming drool.gif (if you can wait)

I guess I need to make final comparison before deciding.

Just one last question, does this plasma really have better black level than say the latest Samsung B series LCDs? or have the best LCD's catched up?

Post Calibration the only way LCDs that can match the plasmas would be the LED backlighting ones. They will show close to equivalent black levels on test patterns but on real movies the black levels will be worse.

How grey is the S10 though in the day? will it cause severe unenjoyment? I have bright lighting so again leaning toward the Samsung though more expensive.

Also,I heard that the S10 pictures is soft in HD, and B650 in sharper for a Plasma.

Can you confirm this?

S10 is 'grey' due to its reflective glass. At night when light is off, it's 'black'.
S10 is soft, I would say it's more natural. You are right. B650 has 'deeper' colour compare to S10.

The one reason would be better colour accuracy of the Sammy plasmas due to the CMS.

ronaldjoe,

The correct way is to have 2 sets of adjustments. During the day, since the ambient light is higher, the gamma of the set needs to be adjusted to be lower. That way you will get better shadow details and picture quality.

During a night in a dimly lit environment, u shd have a different set of adjustments with lower gamma for better blacks and shadow details.

That is why ISF has always recommended 2 sets of settings, ISFday and ISFnight.

Same applies to LCDs as well.

The workaround is to have something in between. But it is not optimal.

Can not say B650 is blacker, the colour is deeper.
In dimly lit room, B650 is blacker as S10 is still bit reflective and glass turn grey when there is a lot ambient light.

I was not talking abt S10 in particular, I was explaining the differences between night time and day time viewing.

There are other ways to compensate gamma indirectly. The S10 has limited controls.

The B650 has gamma controls.

No. But I believe neither does the Sammy. Unless u calibrate it thru 2 different modes (ie movie, user). The problem is that the gamma curves are different in each one so it is not a good way. The sets that I know allow for the separate user presets are Pioneer and higher end LG that has the expert mode.

then it seems that the S10 only wins on price. Since B650:
-is blacker ind dimly lit room
-has less reflective screen
-has sharper picture
-has deeper/better colors
-better in daylight viewing
-more controls (ie gamma)

umm did I miss anything? any area where S10 is better?

Better GUI, crystal design, DNLA (wireless connectivity), better colour accuracy
Cons: potential IR issue and no digital optical out.

You know what my Plasma dealer told me when I ask price for Samsung's Plasma? He said "better don't considered Samsung cause so far already three previous buyers claim warranty for Samsung whereas Panasonic is none."

When ask about Samsung LCD TV, he said last time one wealthy Datin come to purchase 52 inch FullHD LCD TV, the thier took more than 30 mins to tried to make that LCD working but failed and end up that Datin decided to purchase 52 inch Sharp FullHD LCD TV. And later that dealer brought another 52 inch FullHD LCD TV from Samsung and end up same story as last time. So, so far, that dealer send at least 2 unit 52 inch LCD for repair. I over heard that discussion seem like panel problem.

Update on my set:

1) IR is not as bad as it seems. Only visible if i search for it. Watched a movie for 2 hours with the black bar. Yes, IR will appear when i switch back to astro but disappears about 1/2 hour later. Does not concern me when I do normal viewing for normal shows on Astro. If i want to quickly remove the IR, samsung has a "window washer" setting that can be run. If i set that on, even the most stubborn IR stains will go away within 5minutes or so.

2) No S-Video sad.gif Manage to tweak the colors to be more accurate. The upscaling for SD content for this Samsung is better than Sony's BE2 engine (as comparison).

3) Buzzing sound getting less (or I got used to it).

4) Manage to use my Nokia N82 phone with the DLNA feature. Now i can stream my home video / photos recorded on my phone directly to the TV. This is actually quite cool but useless feature.

5) Reflection on this set is really under control. In fact, i went to compare the LED LCD Samsung vs this set and the LEDs are even more reflective! Hate looking at my half naked body when i watch movie for dark scenes.

performance of 550 and 650 is a big gap. Like series 5 lcd vs series 6 lcd.

IR for hr is not that good news. If plasma are to survive in the TV wars, this is not gonna help. Its simply not acceptable. I plasma screen that can get IR so easily will soon have permanent Burn In.

TV off
On the remote control, [info], [menu], [mute], [power]...
Then the rest is on you, as different model has different GUI.

I got mine fr Best Denki.
If not for the warranty, I would have gotten it from Chinaman shop which is much cheaper.

Added on August 18, 2009, 8:40 pmThanks. I was able to check panel hours finally.
It's hiding inside the menu... It's only 58 hours.

I've searched around, can't find any B650 displayed. Shop owner said it is a high-end model and not many people would like to buy plasma these day.

How much you got there across the sea?
Seeing from AVS it's more like the same, B850 is thinner rclxms.gif
Best deal I have seen on B650 is 6.5k with 32" lcd. Damn value for money brows.gif

@ronaldjoe

If I had a choice between the B650 and B850, prob would get a B650.

Yeah pic quality would prob be similar, only the ultra filterbright plus is difference in bright lighting. Thinner is nice, but not essential.

The B850 also has Crystal FullHD Engine and Cinema Smooth, are these features in the B650 as well?

But since only B850 is out in my country....so no choice! Its around 11k, with free 22"lcd and brackets.....

Definitely not value for money :-)

But thinking that its competitor is the Panny 50V10, which would also launch (if ever) at around the same price or slightly cheaper from extrapolating the 50S10 vs 50V10 prices in Aussie....

So hope I made the right decision!

No IR yet. I hope not. sweat.gif
Now only clocked 60+ hours.
50 hz judder? I'm not sure and not encounter this issue yet.
I have seen B550 and B650 side by side. I picked B650 without second thought.
At 5.5k (less 1k for 32" lcd), B650 is far more superior than S10.

Get from commontan. Her price is considered bulk price. rclxms.gif
How much can it be lower 100 to 200 perhaps if bulk.
A lot of ppl still hesitant to get one, i guess sweat.gif

Main issue fr this B650 is still the reliability issue, others are minor.

Hi all,

I received my Samsung Plasma B850 (similar spec to B650 except slim factor) on Saturday.

Been playing around and have 25 hours usage in the weekend.....happy with it overall....colors are nice and bright, picture is sharp, motion is good, no picture noise....black is pretty black in bright lighting (though not as black as the Sammy LED screens) but better than the Panny S10.

IR is there, but goes away after changing source. buzz is there but I dont hear it that much so it does not bother me. So no issues of this sort.

But my main concern is black level....I have a Sony LCD V400 for upstairs room for comparison. And when comparing the black levels on this plasma and the Sony LCD...they are about equal??

What gives, thought that the Plasma would have deeper black levels?
I have not calibrate it of course, and contrast is set low at 50 to avoid excessive IR....but during night sequences in dim lighting, black level is lacking.

I dont think I have a defective panel since all other things are fine. I dont think contrast/brightness is the factor since I played around for it for a couple of minutes to see whether I can improve the black but nothing changed....so what am I doing wrong?

Is it because the plasma cells have not aged yet? will the blacks be better when I get to 100-200hours usage?

Anyway, happy with it, but the blacks are below my expectations for a plasma....perhaps with more hours with it....

Any other samsung plasma owners can share answers? thanks.

ronald, you says u're getting the 50B650 + 32"lcd + 5 years warranty at $6999 right?
also where you recommend to get this sets at offer price?
I checked at one of the shop and they quote me $5900 for sets alone which is more expensive than what you quoted here.

Now don't see this offer...HN retracted the warranty from their standard pack.
I got mine from Best @ 7.2k with 32" lcd + 5 yrs.

Just found out why blacks are washed out. Its the darn Cinema Smooth glitch, which also reported in US models.

When I changed back film mode to Off, blacks are good. Though of course not Kuro levels.

I am happy though.

This also happens for B650?

I believe I read somewhere that you can disable it in the Service menu. Same as the auto dimming feature on the LED backlit LCDs.

Mine is black. There is some where that the black level can be adjusted.
I turn off most of features. Pixel shifting is off by default.

Ronald,

You do not play games on the B650 right? Was just wondering the games HUD will cost permanent burn-in or not, normally we play games for 3 hours...

I only use HTPC for movies. IR protection is on. I see the whole screen is shifted by 3 pixels.
So far I don't have IR issue. I notice that it's less prone to IR now than what it was used to be.
Give me some time until the panel break in... then I ll update again.

Yours is black in dim lighting or bright lighting? In bright lighting yes black is black.

But I dont think that any plasma can be full black in dim lighting, even the Kuros cannot give perfect black.

My perception is that the B Plasmas have dark grey black in dim lighting. better than most conventional LCDs, but still far from perfect (with film mode at off, not cinema smooth :-)).

I also turned all advanced settings off.

Does the pixel shift affect black? And which settings do you mean we can adjust black level?

Added on August 25, 2009, 11:55 am@anfieldude

To tell you the truth, I do not see any differences having the film mode at off or Cinema Smooth, so no big deal I will leave it off rather than going to service menu and mess something up.

Anyway you are right, colors are amazing in the Samsung B plasmas

The correct way to view is to view in a dim environment with light behind the display (known as bias lighting) for fixed panel displays. Even without this, the blacks shd be black on a dim environment. 9G Kuros are pretty black...

You can call this number to check avail 04-630 8210.

The previous panel arrived on 14th but LCD broke. It should be available now. Almost 2 weeks already if still not yet here then you can gauge the low service level just to get a unit.

It's made in Korea. If they are desirous to get for you it can be easily done in a few days.

Maybe you can try SenQ or SEC. They can check for you if it's in stock or is the demo unit available.

How come the Series 5 is listed as "new" and this Series 6 is not?

Damn confusing. But I know that the A is for those launched last year and B is for this year.

Bro Braveheart..."A" series is 2008 model, "B" series is 2009 model. That is the new naming convention they are using...

Anyways, Penang also don't have the PS50B550 plasma yet...I would love to compare those 2 side by side because from the spec looks like the only difference is "clear panel" on the 5 and "ultra clear panel" on the 6, besides the media playing capabilities on the 6 which I don't need at all.

Added on August 26, 2009, 4:07 pmGuys, if U wanna understand more on Samsung naming convention for their TVs, can refer to the guide here:

Just came back from HN QBM, the earliest the Sammy plasma will arrive is end of this month, subject to availability from Samsung Korea and shipping arrangements.

Anyways I tekan the fella for RM6999 for the plasma + 32B350 + 5 year warranty. He said have to check with his boss but most likely doable. sweat.gif

I guess we can call off out rombongan for now...ZZZZzzzz.....

So rm6578 with free 32"LCD and HDMI cable ** commontan

compare to

Panasonic 50" FullHD Plasma TV [TH-P50S10K]
RM 6599.00 with Panasonic BD-60 + HDMI cable. Valid until 25th Sept 2009

Hmm..

Are both the best deal and current price?

How do you compare the B550 Vs Panny S10?

Was just wondering the differences between the B550 Vs B650... ? Believe it is only the extra features but PQ is the same... anybody can confirm this?

We know B450 is not FHD, hence it would not be fair to bring in the B450 to the comparison...

Just got back from Best Denki at Gurney Plaza, Pg. Was there to view the B550, I notice the specs (written on the side of the TV) is almost equivalent to B650 on paper... the salesman told me only difference is the extra features (HDD playable, flash memory, etc...)

Can anyone confirm this?

I check the sammy website, their specs on B550 seems a bit different, eg website staes no 100Hz, but the actually TV states 100Hz, etc... how to trust their website..??

Besides the media playing capabilities on the 650, the other difference is Ultra Clear Panel+ vs Clear Panel (or something like that lah...)

The rest are the same IIANM.

Does the Ultra Clear Panel that significant compared to the Clear Panel?

Is it the same Ultra Clear Panel like the LCD series?

If these are the only differences, I might as well get the B550 which is cheaper by RM1K...

RM1K can be used to buy AC Ryan PlayOn and a few more Bd's.... brows.gif

After checking the Sammy MYS website again, realised the 5 series plasma stated is actually A550, not B550...

The one I saw in Best Denki is B550..naturally the spec would be higher than the previous.. but funny they did not include the B550 in their website..

Hi Ronald,

Just went to H/N Pavillion on Saturday. You were right. The Panasonic just could not hold a candle to the Samsung. Really disappointed me on how they could drop the ball so badly when it comes to the picture quality.

I have already ordered my sets from Best Denki. Managed to bargain it down to a good price imo. Will receive my set this Saturday. Just hope there are no IR issues.

Again thanks for the advice. If not I might have just went for the Panasonic and kicked myself after seeing the Samsung.

Yup saw B550 Vs B650 and other plamasssss in HN Pavillion. Other stores... they just segregate Samsung and Panasonic.
Hardly can see them placed together side by side.

I like this quote from AVS post #1866
QUOTE
Here's my take...I've had my 58 for almost a month and estimate I am around 250 hours, quite possibly more. I calibrated it the day I pulled it out of the box using Pastors settings. However, when I ran my breakin DVD at night when sleeping I lowered the contrast to 50 and brightness around 20. Also when I was not around (someone has to work) and the wife and kids were home I kept c & b at those settings as well in addition to wide fit to avoid side bars as much as possible. But all the while, from day one when I was around and watching, I ran the TV at calibrated settings using screen-fit but being careful to watch for static images. Even having static images at times for an entire baseball game and running blu-ray with bars at the top in some formats for 3 hours at times, I never, ever, have seen any evidence of IR. My picture is the best I have ever seen from a flat panel (or any TV for that matter) and am thrilled with it. Bottom line it's all about common sense. Be careful, be diligent and proactive, but enjoy your TV.

I read about it also. Me and my colleagues also want to go, but what's good there? Maybe window shopping and see the latest electrical products? or will it be clear old stock fair?
Many times SEC prices not very competitive. Some more must be member to enjoy special price. Will the same rule apply for this Fair?

for 46" onwards the soundbar is kinda weird as the size is not proportional. Suitable for 40" only IIRC.

Also will get a free CD of this gal Soo Vincci's album with her personal signature. The last year Miss Malaysia 2008 who released a new album. Received via courier service and listening to her right now. Just 6 songs but quite nice and pleasing also. For a 1st time singer she is quite good and the melodies are mainly ballads.

5yrs warranty from big store is more reliable.

AFAIK, it's arranged by shop with some insurance underwriter (not by bank, pls correct me if i'm wrong notworthy.gif ).
Whereby, there is cost to be borne by the shop.
Touch wood... if something happen cost of repair could easily hit 1-2k...
HN warranty charge for 5 yrs is 1.7k for B650 plasma.

LOL an unlucky guy. sweat.gif
For unbiased review, please do read AVS forum:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1144791

58" B650 is more prone to buzzing sound (according to AVS).
Personally I have changed my 3 days old 42s10 panel as well.
When it came back, there was a point of dirt on the internal glass.
Panasonic was forced to took it back for repair again. Turnaround time was like 2 weeks.
Generally Samsung after sales support is inferior compared to Panasonic.
But I still prefer B650 over S10 plasma for the price.

Only sell well in KL accordingly to Best.

Actually I am bit regret. Should have gotten a 55" instead.

Bigger plasma pricing doesn't go steep compared to lcd tv generally.

His budget isn't much. Max is 40" series 6000 or below.
Heard today that Samsung further reduce its prices...
Kindly please PM me if you get info. Thanks for help. notworthy.gif

LED TV comes with 1 year warranty standard, if you register online u get another 1/2year extra warranty.. which reminds me to register mine soon.
*
LED warranty is for 2 years When you key in online it will only record as 1 year. And later on when you retrieve it from the system it still shows as 1 year.

But after calling them they say that it is a 2 year warranty only that the system is not showing the proper date.

so, it means all together 2 years warranty, and still need to register online right?

Added on September 9, 2009, 12:28 amdamn, i miss the free netbook promotion... too bad..

bought it much earlier, then only saw the advertisement on the free netbook. called the shop and they say cannot tipu with the purchase date ler..cause when they sell (although we did not send or fill in the warranty document), they have to submit the monthly sales information including the sold TV with the serial no to Samsung.

So, meaning even if we fill in the warranty document at a later date, it does not mean the warranty can pro-long, cause Samsung has our record..

I need some honest opinion . I think that samsung 50" plasma B650 has better black level than panasonic 50" s10K. although i would say the difference not really big, but samsung is 400-500 more expensive than panny. does it justify the few hundred extra?

if you ask me then I would say definitely worth it.
apart from dark level, it comes with better features such as player that can play any types of movie files except rmvb and the wireless thingy.
and of course I feel B650 has a better looks than S10.

Correction, almost any type of movie files except RMVB and DTS not supported. Can play a 8GB++ 1080p Bluray file effortlessly without any shutter or pixilation BUT too bad no audio sweat.gif

RM400-500 more? Consider it as having a built-in media player and wireless streaming capability.

My hope is Panasonic will take this feature and improve it one level up!
It is lot cheaper than buying ori bluray disk. laugh.gif

Who cares if it can even decode and downmix lossless audio to play on the tv speakers? In the first place U play the movie using the TV can bitstream out to AVR or not? If not it's just a white elephant feature. doh.gif

Just came back from QBM. The plasmas are already on display. They setup a mini Sammy roadshow outside Guess. Here's my super short FR based on my 30 minute viewing for both PS50B550 and PS50B650

- 650 has a little better AR coating. However, the difference is very very minute and virtually indistinguishable when watching movies (same source). When fully off, the 650 has a purple tint on the glass. The 550 also has this purple tint, but it is less. I don't have a side by side comparison, but I think the reflection on the 550 is similar to Panny S10.

- 650 has these which are not available for 550: Ultra FilterBright (vs FilterBright), 100Hz Motion Plus (vs 100Hz) and WCE3 (vs WCE2). HOWEVER, those make no difference to me at all when watching movie. I have to admit though skin tones on the 650 is slightly more natural, but I am confident that can be achieved as well on the 550.

- Didn't test the media capabilities on the 650 as I was not interested in it. Alan demoed it for 5 mins, until got error message on one of those MKV unsupported file. I told him to switch back to the Sammy demo BD so I could do side by side comparion. laugh.gif

- I put my ear next to both the plasmas and cannot hear any buzzing sound. Granted, it was quite noisy over there, so I could be wrong. I forgot to test for the buzz during power on for the plasmas though. Can anyone test those and get back on this? Thanks.

- Price wise, RM6299 for 650 and RM5499 for 550. Free HDMI cable only with 2 year warranty.

The roadshow will be there until Monday. Alan said they will move it up once the roadshow is over, but not sure if the 650 and 550 will be placed side by side for comparison. They could also box it up if no space available. sweat.gif

END OF FR.

chewkl,

Does the 550 have the full CMS and the white balance/greyscale adjustments in the user menu, if it does, then u can calibrate out the skin tone differences. However, the fact that they use 2 different filters tell me that post calibration the 650 will probably have slightly better black levels compared to the 550. This is the "premium" the insert on the higher end models.

Bro Anfieldude, I didn't mess with the menu, but I know for a fact both use different menu. The 650 has this animation going on in the menu but the 550 was plain Jane. I did remember Alan was adjusting it and saw the "tint" setting. Didn't check anything else. Let me see if I can get the user manual. biggrin.gif

RM800 difference and to my peasant eyes I see very very little difference, better save the $$$. sweat.gif

Maybe U can pay a visit to QBM and go play with both plasmas and give us your "qualified review" here? thumbup.gif

Greyscale adjustment available but no CMS. So it is a stripped down version of the 650. I believe the 650 has a full CMS.

Bro Anfieldude, wouldn't U be able to calibrate via the service menu if there is no full CMS?

Anyways, here's the user manual for 650:

http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/...-00Eng_0415.pdf

Page 16, everything is the same as 550 except the below:

Colour Space
Colour Space is a colour matrix composed of red, green and blue colours. Select your favourite colour space to experience the most natural colour.
Auto: Automatically sets the colour range depending on the input video source.
Native: Sets the colour range wider than the that of the input video source.
Custom: Adjusts the colour range to suit your preference.
Customizing the Color Space
Adjusts the Color range to suit your preference. Color is available when Color Space is set to Custom.
Color: Red / Green / Blue / Yellow / Cyan / Magenta
Red / Green / Blue: You can adjust the RGB values for the selected color.
Reset: Resets the color space to the default values

xvYCC → Off / On
Setting the xvYCC mode to on increases detail and colour space when watching movies from an external device (i.e. DVD player).
xvYCC is available when the picture mode is set to Movie, and the external input is set to HDMI or Component mode.

Digital NR →Off / Low / Medium / High / Auto
If the broadcast signal received by your TV is weak, you can activate the Digital Noise Reduction feature to help reduce any static and ghosting that may appear on the screen.
When the signal is weak, select one of the other options until the best picture is displayed.
This function is not available in PC mode.

HDMI Black Level →Normal / Low
You can directly select the black level on the screen to adjust the screen depth.
This function is active only when the external input connects to HDMI (RGB signals).

1080 Full HD Motion Demo → Off / On
Samsung' new generation PDP panels deliver stunning Full HD motion clarity when viewing fast action sports, movies, and games.
Film Mode
You can optimize the picture mode for watching movies.
Off : Turn the Film Mode function off.
Auto1: Automatically adjusts the picture for the best quality when watching a film.
Auto2: Automatically optimizes the video text when watching a film.
Film mode is supported in TV, Video, Component(480i / 1080i) and HDMI(1080i).
Cinema Smooth: Offers the ultimate cinema experience.
This function is available when the external input connects to HDMI (1920x1080p@24Hz).

Real 100Hz Demo → Off / On
You can get a clear distinction between Real 100Hz and 50Hz, especially when watching fast moving scenes. Therefore, when seeing slow moving scenes, you will not be able to distinguish between Real 100Hz and 50Hz. Demo 100Hz works only with 50Hz signal. Real 100Hz demo mode is provided for shop demonstration with special pictures.

Blue Only Mode → Off / On
This function is for AV device measurement experts. This function displays the blue signal only by removing the red and green signals from the video signal so as to provide a blue filter effect that is used to adjust the colour and tint of video equipment such as DVD players, Home Theaters, etc.
Blue Only Mode is available when the picture mode is set to Movie or Standard.

chewkl,

I have to get into the service menu and see if the CMS adjustments (Colour Space Custom) is available and that all 6 channels (RGBCYM) are avail for adjustments. But I highly doubt it since the firmwares will be different and the CMS portion would not be there.

I have to get into the service menu and see if the CMS adjustments (Colour Space Custom) is available and that all 6 channels (RGBCYM) are avail for adjustments. But I highly doubt it since the firmwares will be different and the CMS portion would not be there.

Thanks bro. Looks like need to source for pro reviews of the B550 to see if the adjustments are in the service menu...

2) Samsung PS42B450 (Plasma TV) --? RM2699 (no freebie)

Dont know which one is better, when test on this 2 unit, Samsung PS42B450 look better quality than X10K........Guys, please comments, thanks

was there just now, one main thing caught me was that B650 is blacker than B550... i think this was the major difference other than the hardware features...

braveheart, i was there when u called Alan. hehe

think i will most probably go for B650, but seems it may be a long lead time as Samsung sales had closed for the Raya and could not commit any further delivery schedule. Other retailers mentioned possibility of 2 weeks delivery.

But, HN Alan mentioned they will have 1x unit for sale(apart from the display) coming tomorrow. Those who comfirm order from HN will get it fast.

de_lasoul,

As I mentioned earlier, this is very possible due to the different filters used.

Wanted to go tonite but it rained cats and dogs and cancelled plans as many places were flooded. Need to go tmrw as I need them on the spot.

As I needed 2 units of the 32" so he will have to give me below the quoted price. He was also surprised that so many of you all got the news so fast and already seeing it. I told him not to simply use tembak sales method as you fellas know tons more technically than him. Price wise we all have the advantage to squeeze more discounts since he knows we have all grouped up together. I told him that clearly. He won't simply fool around since we are serious about this.

He also don't want to kena screwed again. But overall he is a helpful guy just some things are out of his control.

I have heard a lot of good things about P50B650 better than the 50S10. But what really scare me is the image retention on the samsung set. Most reviewers noted that the samsung set is very prone to IR....can some one update on the IR after fully run-in.

I don't mind slightly inferior picture on the 50S10 since no one will notice it if watch by itself....afterall the difference is only noticeable if we place the 2 sets side by side.

Just came back again from viewing the TV, again. My mission this round was to compare the blacks as 1 brother here commented that the 650 have deeper blacks than the 550. I tried very hard to play "spot the difference" between the 2 models, but I have to say that unless U look very very very hard, both model's blacks are virtually the same. The only time U can see a difference is when there is a very dark background, like a person's black coat or jacket. (spotted this in the Samsung breakdance demo clip in 1 of the guy's black jacket in the background). That was the only scene I could see the difference and again it is very hard to spot. U have to deliberately look for it to see the difference. In the other Samsung demo scenes, the cartoon and also Soundstage, I couldn't tell any difference at all. End up I spotted the more natural skintones on the 650, without even looking hard for it...Like I said, must be my peasant eyesight. sweat.gif

BTW, Alan is not around today. Got some super leng lui promoter instead. brows.gif

a good demo spot on blacks is the david foster BD..

when he's playing on the piano, his black suit, you can see the difference in blacks between the lapels and the main suit.. made of different black materials..

MPYW's calibrated 50inch Kuro on day ISF settings, show's the black suit's different materials superbly..

B650 gives a better black than B550 under bright room condition due its AR coating.
Btw I saw Panasonic Z and V series in person. It was thumbup.gif .
By all means, elites with fat wallet can consider Z series. It's a piece of fine art wub.gif

Those 2 TVs I saw were in super bright conditions, already very hard for me to spot the difference. In home environment with controlled lighting I'm not sure how much edge the 650 will have over its lower sibling.

chewkl,

Actually, black levels differences are clearer in dim lit/dark environment. In bright environment, your iris closes quite a bit, thus the black level differences cannot be seen so clearly. In dim/dark environment, your iris is wide open, thus the blacks become dark grey. Thats why black levels become important when viewed in dimly lit/dark environment. Another way to "cheat" the iris to enhance black levels is to use a bias lighting behind the display (for fixed panels only). This way you force your iris not to open too much thus having washed up blacks.

So, in essence, if you can spot black level differences in a showroom environment, the difference is greater in your home.

Thanks for the explanation bro. The white light behind the TV (poor man's ambilight), I thought that was the recommended way to watch these fixed panel displays. Now I know it is used to cheat. (No wonder my 50" fishtank very nice with the white light behind (for my peasant eyes lah)). thumbup.gif

The white light behind the display is the recommended way to watch fixed panel displays. By cheat, I mean it enhances black levels.

ar188 has answered. Let me be clear abt this "cheat" thing. The improvement is perceived improvements in black levels, however, there is no actual improvement in black levels. CRT is also fixed panel.

Ok either I got my stuff mixed up or something got blurred along the lines. Anyway, bias lighting behind the display will work for plasma, LCD, CRT, OLED. Bias lighting is not necessary for projectors (in my term non fixed panel). Projector is meant to be viewed in the dark as they put out very low light levels.

i admit i was leaning to the panny 50" model until i read this tread. interestingly, since i'm staying near cheras, i called up my local shop (situated in cheras furniture city) but got a quote for a shocking rm7,300 ohmy.gif

i haven't view this unit yet but would definitely shortlist this as well.

This shop even can deliver the same day if I wanted too but I prefer to get the set during this weekend when I move in my house.

And the final price I nego for this set is at RM5550 but without extended warranty (1 year panel, 2 years parts).

The shop fella told me don't worry on the warranty as this set can easily last for many years to come as Samsung reliability is on par with any other Japs brand based on the faulty return unit although I'm still a bit leary to decide whether to extend the warranty or not.

Anyway, can't wait for my set to arrive this weekend rclxms.gif

And those who left me a pm, u got the reply and hope we can form a new B650 owners thumbup.gif

For samsung brand , i think its a good good idea to go for extended warranty. Even my local samsung repair centre warn me that samsung got many problems and i can see from the many sammy lcd lying around waiting for repairs too!

its always advisable to go for extended warranties irregardless of the brand .

probably samsung sold more units of their TV than others and thats why there're more of them lying at the repair shops

At 22feet u might need a projector projecting at 120in screen to enjoy the benefits of 1080p! But yes, 50in is definately too small. If u are planning to get a flat panel, look at the 60in or 65in.

for 22'x75' ,minus the walking pathway and stairway , viewing distant should be 12' . 50'' to 55 '' is most ideal

wow..22ft fm the tv..I guess you need at least 60" and above.
my viewing distance is around 12' thus 50" is just nice I guess.
perhaps putting your sofa in between of 22' will save your wallet.

I think LCD B650 100Hz are entry levels... if really wanna get good PQ from Sammy LCD, must get higher series.. eg LED series or 9 series.. just my opinion.

Anymore advice on whether B550 or B650 or even B450.. I just care about PQ. Does RM 1k justify on enhance feature of B650 than B550. I mean feature like 100Hz Motion Plus rather than 100Hz Motion or Wide Colour Enhancer 3 than Wide Colour Enhancer 2.

I just really need media playback on B650. It's nice to have feature for me..

I think 60Hz is correct input signal. 100Hz is not an input signal.. it a feature which convert 50hz signal to 100hz so the framerate will be double to avoid blurry in fast move image.

bro, this era not CRT monitor anymore no need to pump VGA signal at 80-100Hz.. we just fix the Hz as the standard HDTV frequency.. like 50hz or 60hz..

those 100hz or 240hz is generated by the LCD internal circuitry to the LCD panel.. smile.gif

Refresh rates are really not important for plasma due the nature of the refresh. For plasma the display just need to support 24Hz, 50Hz and 60Hz. For low quality SD feed (Astro) it is better to have 100Hz enabled for fast moving sports (50Hz). But really not necessary

For LCD it is important. They nature of the refresh requires some sort of image processing to enable a smooth picture when the feed is 50 or 60Hz.

just to add, panel refresh (like 100hz) is only part of the story, then you have intra frame motion processing, black frame insert, and also LCD panel response time.. so LCD have to work much harder to achieve what plasma's panel can do easily with 50Hz signal..

So the 100Hz is needed for LCD, but why Samsung Plasma mention about the 100Hz on their Plasma specification? But Pana Plasma dont mention about this one, just mention the sub-field up to 480Hz...haha....

100Hz for plasma is mentioned to the regions that have 50Hz (PAL) regions.

Pana plasma has the option as well. Sub field is a gimmick to counter LCDs giving 240Hz and all.

The layman is not so well versed, bigger is always better.

See the TV in pavillion today.. Very tired with salesman which keep pushing for a sales.. Asking what best price I get elsewhere.. I just mention about people getting offered 5500 here.. Than he keep saying the price must be display set. Also mention is really can get 5500 he Boss sure will borong all the stock..

Really headache will salesman.. Going there hoping to compare and asking for advice where PQ is really different between 550 and 650..

I must said my experience in harvey norman midvalley and ikano much2 better. The salesman just answering ur question without trying to really push for a sales..

My B650, not automatically. You have to select 'Photo', 'Music' or 'Movie' for it to process. If you are in movie mode then you can't view your photos, and so forth.
It can play 11GB 1080p file without problem but can't process the DTS audio. So get it converted to AC3 or get movie files with AC3 or rest of non DTS audio.
In addition to what ronn77, it also cannot recognize quicktime.

Can anyone re-advise? Also will this procedure work for all Sammy Plasma/LCD?

no probs to share the settings with you after calibration, but will need to wait cause need to let it run in before calibration can be done. i think will let it reach 100hrs, then calibrate. hope to reach the target in a mth's time.

However, our environment may be different. I plan to set 2x sets of settings for day and night respectively.
