The Emotional Highbury and The Grand Ashburton Grove

Highbury 1913-2006

For the majority of their time in south-east London, Arsenal played at the Manor Ground in Plumstead, a three-year period at the nearby Invicta Ground between 1890 and 1893 excepted. The Manor Ground was initially just a field, but the club installed stands and terracing in time for their first Football League match in September 1893. They played their home games there for the next twenty years (with two exceptions in 1894�95), until the move to north London in 1913.



Arsenal Stadium, widely referred to as Highbury, was Arsenal's home from September 1913 until May 2006. The original stadium was designed by the renowned football architect Archibald Leitch, and had a design common to many football grounds in the UK at the time, with a single covered stand and three open-air banks of terracing. In the 1930s, the entire stadium was given a massive overhaul, with new Art Deco West and East stands constructed, opening in 1932 and 1936 respectively; in addition, the North Bank terrace had a roof added, which was later bombed during World War II and not restored until 1956.

At its peak, Highbury could hold over 60,000 spectators, and had a capacity of 57,000 until the early 1990s. The Taylor Report and Premier League regulations forced Arsenal to convert Highbury into an all-seater in time for the 1993�94 season, reducing the capacity to 38,419 seated spectators. This capacity had to be reduced further during Champions League matches to accommodate additional advertising hoardings, so much so that for two seasons (1998�99 and 1999�00) Arsenal played Champions League home matches at Wembley, which could house more than 70,000 spectators.

Expansion of Highbury was restricted because the East Stand had been designated as a Grade II listed building and the other three stands were close to residential properties. These limitations have prevented the club from maximising the revenue that their domestic form could have brought in recent seasons. After considering various options, in 2000 Arsenal proposed building a new 60,000-seater stadium at Ashburton Grove, since renamed the Emirates Stadium, about 500 metres south-west of Highbury. The project was initially delayed by red tape and rising costs, but construction was completed in July 2006, in time for the start of the 2006�07 season. The stadium is named after its sponsors, the airline company Emirates, with whom the club signed the largest sponsorship deal in English football history, worth approximately �100 million; however some fans refer to the ground as Ashburton Grove, or the Grove, as they do not agree with corporate sponsorship of stadium names.The stadium will be officially known as Emirates Stadium until at least 2012, and the airline will be the club's shirt sponsor until the end of the 2013�14 season.

I am not sure Toure is good business. a lynch-pin, IMO I like the way he gets forward, having long shots and precise tackles. If Everton can hold out 30 Mil for lescott, Terry for 40, then Toure should be at least 30 too. Arsene should have raised the price more, judging by this yrs inflated market he really should.

Wenger has always been a great businessman! Hopefully with the injected cash he generates from the transfer market, there will be one or two more new faces to the squad! Then we are ready to challenge for the title!

Hope AW have it all plan out. Actually, now I'm hoping, if we do lose Toure(which seem to be closer and closer) at least AW can finally have a chance to replace one of the CB spot at least with a taller defender, hopefully. Plus, even with 6 CB last season, we were unable to cover for the spot last season when we lost Gallas and Toure, so I feel, there wont be any probz in getting another CB.

BPL tax is highest than other league..50% if not my mistake...
other sportsman like lewis hamilton also live outside to avoid this tax..

Tax works on different tiers. I'm not too familiar with the British system, but I assume its sort of similar in most countries, where the tax rate is higher as you move up on the income bracket.

In theory, this is how most tax system works: -
1) The poor gets tax less
2) The rich gets tax more

So in the UK, they decided that all rich b@stards (footballers included) who used to pay 25% tax (example) now needs to pay 50% tax on their wages. If gaji tak naik, but tax naik, that means now your take home pay is less la.

No doubt Kolo will be a massive lost to us. Tho his form has been pretty erratic, one game he could be massive, another game he would make mistake that makes us lose games. He's a good tackler and tracks back very well. Lost count the number of times he's made one of those crunching last ditch tackle that saved us. His timing and his runs are second to none among Arsenal defenders.

Selling toure is good in terms of business but no good is team stability... Wenger did mentioned that he got 7 CB (It was wrong, Song is belong to CDM)

Now we should sit there and watch who will wenger buy .... Selling already be a trend for wenger, why he not recommend senderos to Man City???

He will be a massive lost to us, only if we do not sign a replacement. Yes, Kolo is a fantastic tackler I won't deny that. But his positional sense and heading sometimes leaves a lot to be desired IMO. Many a time we see this exposed but his pace more often than not bails him out of these situations. Hence why the huge amount of last ditch tackles. If Kolo had some decent positioning there wouldn't even be a need for last ditch tackles. Gallas is similar to Kolo which is why his shortcomings were magnified even further during recent seasons whereas Sol Campbell made up for everything Kolo lacks hence the brilliant partnership.

Andy Gray once questioned "Why is it does the Arsenal defenders always have to get back to make the tackle but they are never ALREADY there to make the tackle". Not the actual quote but something like that.

yep.. trust AW. he knows what he's doing. BTW, i think Senderos is ready to step up. Look at his partnership with Djourou in Euro, they were massive.... the swiss duo did really good. So, i think Aw is banking on Sendy to step it up.

it's always interesting to see how the season folds, it will be fascinating to see how we fare against the other clubs. the odds are stacked against us, but what more thrill than to take all the critics' words and SLAP it back hard to their faces at the end of their season? i for one still believe we still have a good squad to beat any team in the world if we play to our best. it's largely due to injuries that i feel we havent been able to show what arsenal can reallly do.

what i do agree is that the squad can do with more experienced players, especially in the defence. but if arsene decides not to buy, then i leave it to his wiser judgment to decide. i am against kolo toure's sell, but again i believe he has more insight into the club and again, i trust his decisions.

Very true, his heading abilities and positioning sense isn't exactly world class compared to Rio or even Vidic.

But i remember very clearly Wenger saying he won't sell his top players this season, as what happened in the previous when Pires, Henry, Vieira, Edu, Flamini, Hleb and etc left. Here we are, losing arguably our top 2 players in the team. New players coming in might need a couple of months to settle down, sometimes even up to a season.

Ya, Senderos was a good CB, till he meet Drogba, which until now. I know he got the quality, but somehow he fail to perform.

Let's not forget what happened in 1997-98 when we won our first double under Wenger (ok some of you might not even follow football yet, so here's a quick recap).

We sold Paul Merson and I remember us Gooners were making similar noises back then. After all, Merson was an established first teamer and came up through the ranks. However, in came Marc Overmars, who just came back from a career threatening injury and many were questioning AW's wisdom in signing a perma-crock. And in came a little known leftback from Monaca called Emmanuel Petit.

Overmars was of course instrumental in that title winning year, contributing (IIRC) 12-13 goals and even scoring against Man Utd at Old Trafford which switched tides our way. Petit of course formed arguably one of the best midfield tandems in EPL history with Vieira.

So yes, some players need time to adapt like Pires, Gilberto and Hleb. But others may take to English football like ducks to water. I mentioned Overmars and Petit who made immeadiate impact. More recently Sagna fit in like a glove in our backline, while Arshavin's arrival galvanised the team towards the end of the season. Henry did not score in his first 10 games or so, but ended up the year as top scorer in his first year.

Have some faith in AW's signings...

and the past few years, AW has good signings barring Lassana Diarra. He was the one that got away.

Nasri - also fits nicely
Arshavin - man.. what can i say.. impact player...

But all in all, just hope the first 8 match, we would win them. We cant start like last season again, hahaha

Arsene made his choice to sell Kolo we also cannot make noise. Since Kolo is in his last year contract and handed transfer request. Since people offer you 15M. Why not? We are going to replace him anyway right. Rift between Kolo and Gallas need to be solved. Since one of them volunteer to walk out and we can receive money. What we can do now is to trust the players and trust Wenger. Maybe Wenger is banking on a big signing with 40M?

AW felt that lack of defensive since Kolo and Willy together so that's the reason he bought Vermaelen (good on air + good in reading game) which similar Vidic & Terry.

That's the thing. Most of us (myself included) are concerned that if/when we sell Toure, AW will come up with statements like "We've already got CBs" or "Buying another CB will kill Senderos, Djorou, Nordveit and the tea lady".

Hahaha, yup, we have 7 CB, as listed by angel82. Maybe we never felt like we have 7 is because, out of the 7, only few can play the position properly, plus we have some of them injured during some part of the season last season

well, on paper 7 looks a lot. but TBH last season we were really struggling. gallas and JD were injured. sendy off on loan. song was in midfield. we only had kolo and silvestre. i dont even want to remember how painful it was

Good post amidst all those doom and gloom whining spreading everywhere in cyberspace.

There has been arguments on other forums (fortunately not here yet) saying that Vermy is not up to standard/too short/not as great as expected etc. Vermy haven't even played a proper competitive match for us yet and people are already making up their minds.

Honestly, how often have you guys seen these players play? I don't think any of us have a true idea of how good/bad these players performed in the past season, but surely if anyone of them were good enough le Boss would have sent his scouts to gather information about them. Hangeland for what it's worth is likely to become the next "Veloso" , "Cana", or even "Frey" in terms of perpetually being linked with Arsenal rather than actual ability.

Not to say that I am against signing Hangelaand as any signing is always welcomed. Nevertheless I think the main argument that Hangelaand is a better player just because he plays in the EPL is a weak one. Playing in EPL doesn't necessarily mean suitable for Arsenal.

As someone who grew up with Wenger's years it's only natural that I feel bad about Kolo leaving, but there will be a day where our favourite player(s) leave. Titi's departure has showed us that even the greatest player will never be able to play for Arsenal for the rest of his life, and if Kolo chooses to leave we can only wish him good luck.

Think on the bright side:
1. We've got another huge profit not unlike that of Anelka's sale.
2. The departure of the last remaining Invincible (Clichy doesn't count due to his lack of participation back then) may actually "free" the younger players to play their own game.
3. Gallas + Vermy may potentially work better since Gallas intercepts better on the ground while Vermy leaps sky high despite his "normal" height.
4. Arsene never replaces players like-for-like; yet for each departure, we unearth someone who is equally important, if not better, regardless of differences in style:
(a) Wrighty -> Anelka
(b) Anelka -> Titi
(c ) Overmars -> Pires
(d) Paddy -> Fabs
(e) Titi -> Ade in his 30 goal season/ Dudu
(f) Cole -> Clichy (probably the only similar one)
(g) Hleb -> Nasri/Arshavin
(h) Lauren -> Sagna (quite similar too, although Lauren still crosses better)
(i) Dave -> Jens

I'd say the players we never truly replaced are Gilberto and Sol; and to a lesser extent, Pires although a full season of Arshavin magic might change that.

Kolo may appear to be leaving, but Vermy/JD may potentially become the next big thing. The only thing I'm concerned about is Gallas's future where he may possibly leave after next season when his contract finishes. Who knows by then our first choice CB pairing would already be Vermy AND JD or even someone new.

hehehe...glad to see bro kimhoong taking my question suggestion as a poll..about toure im very sad that he is leaving as he has given all to Arsenal for all the years he was with us.....but it is also true that he was not the same player since he came back from ACN with a bout of malaria....i really believe Vermy can step up n be our new defensive lynchpin!!i also think that AW will not replace Toure as he said there are 6 CBs(excluding toure) in Arsenal first team...so there are other players that can step in if Vermy or Gallas gets injured...my gut is that AW will only buy 2 players which is a DM and a striker.....but i really hope that a proven DM would be the first priority.... n one more thing...guess which player i voted to become RVP's partner...one roti telur n teh tarik for the winner!!!

I reckon we shouldn't even get Huntelaar. Great player that he is, I feel we have enough firepower upfront. Eduardo and Van Persie can be truly deadly if fit and now that we have Arshavin there really isn't any reason to reinforce the frontline. If Walcott develops the way Henry did, we will have another great striker added to the ranks. What Arsenal needs to do is simple. Fill the void that Vieira left. Sure, Flamini came close to replace him but he left. And I think Arsenal really missed out on Melo. He would've been perfect. Why can't we buy Miguel Veloso? He's great for 14-15 mil. And now that Toure's pretty much gone let's hope we get Hangeland to replace him. And what's all that crap about Vermaelen not being strong enough? Puyol is shorter and so is Cannavaro and Milito and Marquez and they managed to win the treble. I'm sure Arsene had good reason to buy him and let's just stick with him. In Arsene we trust.

i voted for bendy simply because his height and he's right footer.compliment well with RVP.dudu is a left footer and he's lacking of height.

toure's departure..i'm optimistic that we still can cope with his absence.sagna praised vermy.that should mean something.for djorou and sendy,i would say,give them another chance.same like what we did to ade when henry left us.

Even if Vermy can fit in like a glove, I'll like to see another CB signing, even if it's a backup one. You can never predict injuries.

Glad to know that many here can accept the fact that Toure is leaving (be it a speculation or truth).

Conclusion:
1. Financially, 15M for a defender of his last year contract is a good deal.

2. Football-wise, losing a 29 years old defender with 7-8(?) years experience at the same club, it's a bad deal.

3. From Arsenal POV, losing a regular in this already weak defence is a big NO-NO.

4. Losing Toure to a potential Top-4 "contender" is even a bigger NO-NO.


Just wait and see if the deal goes through first.

Footballistically it may be a blessing in disguise IMO. If Toure stays no doubt our first choice defensive partnership will be Gallas/Toure which we all have seen enough of how inaffective they are as a defensive partnership because both are similar in terms of strengths and weaknesses and neither would want to sit on the bench. Toure leaving opens the door to whoever Arsene chooses to pair Gallas with. Right now I'd assume it would be Vermaelen and IF Vermaelen turns to be the perfect foil (making up for Toure's poor positioning and heading) we could be looking at a very tasty season for us. Also, one Centreback spot up for grabs amongst Vermaelen, Djourou, Silvestre and Senderos assuming he stays. Competition for starting spots is always welcome IMO.

Agree about losing Toure to City though. Would have preferred him to be sold elsewhere if he were to leave. Same as Adebayor. But to be honest we were never going to get the type of money we received for them elsewhere.

But anyway, just to add on a little bit... Normally, I would say a defender can probably play at the top level until 33-34 and some cases older. But these guys (Adams, Keown, Hyypia,etc) usually have/had good reading of the game and strong positional sense, whereas the main asset that Kolo Toure has is his pace. As KimHoong mentioned, he's already 29. How long more can he possess the pace to make those famous last ditch tackles?

So is AW cutting his losses on what he believes is a depreciating asset? Could be... Could very well be...

This is sad...I mean it's bad enough we still don't get any replacement for Ade then we lost another important part of our team (vice captain) for God sake...It give me thinks that we actually does not have money to buy players, if we not sell any...
