Arsenal Target Roma's Daniele De Rossi – Report
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger could be lining up a €35 million bid for the Italian...

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger could be interested in spending big and signing Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi.

Wenger could have as much as €47 million (£40m) at his disposal after the sales of striker Emmanuel Adebayor and defender Kolo Toure to Manchester City.

The majority of the money received may be used in a bid for De Rossi, according to The Independent, with an offer of around €35 million (£30m) speculated.

The figure would eclipse any previous transfer fee spent by the north London outfit and will need to be in order for the Lupi to even entertain parting company with the 26-year-old.

Gunners boss Wenger is keen to add some grit to his midfield and could get both aggression and creativity from the fiery Italy international, who is invaluable to the Giallorossi and regarded as one of the finest talents in the national setup.

Saint-Etienne holding midfielder Blaise Matuidi has also been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium today, while rumours persist suggesting club legend Patrick Vieira could return to his spiritual home as he appears set to leave Inter this summer.

- Arsenal target Marouane Chamakh is in London, looking to push through a move to the Gunners.

- Philippe Senderos is the next Arsenal player leaving this summer.

His destination is Everton, the 24-year-old Swiss centre back will sign for the toffies for a fee of £6m.

- Arsenal are closing in on a £7million deal for Holland star Ibrahim Afellay.

The Gunners manager has been tracking the 23-year-old PSV Eindhoven midfielder for the last year.

Wenger is also ready to match Juventus's £3m valuation of their 17-year-old Brazilian youngster Zezinho.

- Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists if any new signing is to be made, it will be done before the end of the week.

"I will be looking at all the options we have during the week, and then we close," said Wenger.

"I believe we have quite a strong squad now. If we can add one or two players, we will do it, but not more."

Arsenal play Rangers on Sunday, with the Scottish champions having beaten Paris St Germain in the Emirates Cup opening game.

"Our target is to now find a good balance with the offensive players we have, and that is why we could afford to let a striker go," said Wenger.

"We want to prepare seriously, because we have a strong start to the season - we play Everton, Manchester City and Manchester United away in
the first few weeks.

"We are cautious, but determined to do well. We are highly motivated and focused, which is a good basis."

- Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger chose to sell Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure to Manchester City to break up an African clique inside the dressing room, it has been revealed.

The Observer says there is something ruthlessly strategic about his willingness to do business on Adebayor, Touré, and in all probability Eboué, who capered through a half of Arsenal's 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid. In one fell swoop, it diffuses the three major areas of conflict within the camp.

The tension between Adebayor and Nicklas Bendtner has never been particularly helpful. Then there is the mutual appreciation society involving Touré and William Gallas, which manifested itself in a winter crisis that saw the Frenchman stripped of the captaincy and the Ivorian slapping in a transfer request. Eboué's discord is rather more general, considering he managed to alienate the club's fans, who turned on him last term.

Adebayor, Touré and Eboué led a clique inside the dressing room, with Alexandre Song the junior partner. It is natural that men from a similar cultural background should connect and spend time in each other's company, but at times the group seemed a little too exclusive for comfort.

Song, easily the most improved performer at the club last season, is not seen as expendable by Wenger, but he is likely to be the only survivor.

- Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was delighted with Andrey Arshavin's brace in saturdays 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid.

Arshavin struck twice after coming off the bench and Wenger said: "The difference is now he knows how English football works.

"He knows as well he is part of the team from the start, and the team knows how important and how big an impact he can have on the results.

"Arshavin has what you cannot give to a player - he understands when there is an opportunity in the final third, and is certainly dangerous."

-Arsenal star Andrey Arshavin has backed manager Arsene Wenger's approach to the game.

He said "It's always hard to play against teams like Wigan.

"We encountered problems against them last season, even though we ended up winning 4-1. I don't want us to be playing for the result alone, I want us to carry on playing the way we do, the way I love.

"I love attacking football. My own view would always be: let's score more than we concede; rather than hang back by our own goal and wait for a single chance to score.

"Anyway, if you look at Arsenal, the squad we have isn't designed to win 1-0. That's why you have 60,000 coming to the Emirates, they come to see something beautiful, something memorable."

- Two early goals proved decisive as Arsenal defeated Rangers 3-0 in the Emirates Cup final game.

Jack Wilshere scored twice and sandwiched in between was an Eduardo effort as the Gunners sealed their second win in two days.

Wilshere opened his account after just 120 seconds with Eduardo grabbing the second after ten minutes.

The 17 year old completed the rout with his second, and Arsenal's third, on 72 minutes.

Rangers had a chance to get themselves back in the game when the score stood a 2-0 but Steven Naismith missed a wonderful opportunity leaving the England youth international to seal the game.

- Arsenal whiz Jack Wilshere was named man-of-the-match in Saturdays 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid.

"He has matured, and compared to one year ago he has more power to take people on. That shows there is big potential there and makes him much more dangerous," said Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

"At that age, unfortunately patience is not the first quality, but he is at a big club and has a chance to compete at the top level.

"We have to manage that well, the desire and the opportunity to play."

- Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists his squad is a match for defending champs Manchester United.

"We have eight defenders, eight or nine midfielders and four strikers, plus the youngsters around, so quality and number-wise we are where we want to be," he said.

"We lost two great players, but we have as well, great players behind and that is up to us to show during the season that we still have the quality to fight at the top level."

Wenger feels the Gunners can mount a serious title challenge next season.

"You have to analyse potential of the team," he said. "Manchester United won one game against top-four teams and that means they have done less well than us against top-10 teams.

"They made the difference at home, winning 16 games.

"We lost the championship last year in the first 14 games, when we lost five and after that we just lost one.

"I am convinced the difference of potential is not as big as the points indicated."

As to the impact of United's summer departures, Wenger observed: "All you can say is that the numbers of [Cristiano] Ronaldo were always big in their games.

"He scored 42 goals one year and then 24 or 25. A player of that calibre is always difficult to replace."

- Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says 17 year-old midfielder Jack Wilshere will get a first team chance this season.

He said “I feel he can play in some games. Wilshere is more a player that goes past people using power whereas Cesc was more of a passer of the ball.

"Wilshere is a guy who provokes, goes past people and destabilises people and already in the pre-season we have noticed he has gained power.”

- Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has attempted to play down claims from
Bordeaux president Jean-Louis Triaud of an approach for Marouane Chamakh.

Bordeaux, in the knowledge that Arsenal have banked £41m from the sales of Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure to Manchester City, are demanding £12.5m for Chamakh, who scored 13 goals last season.

Wenger tried to shrug off the Bordeaux president's revelation, saying: "He is responsible for his statements. I wouldn't like to comment on phone calls I give during the day. I could make 100 phone calls. All I can say is we are nowhere near to signing anyone at the moment."

- Fulham boss Roy Hodgson could insist Carlos Vela moves to Craven
Cottage on a season-long loan arrangement if Arsenal step up their interest in defender Brede Hangeland.

Mexican striker Vela moved to the Emirates Stadium last summer from Osasuna.

The 20-year-old went on to find the net six times in ten starts and 19 substitute appearances for Wenger's side last term.

- Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits he's unhappy over Theo Walcott's excursions with England U21's European Championship campaign.

"I was not in fairness a supporter of his experience with the under-21s for one simple reason: the youth teams are there to promote the players into the first team and once they are there, especially at national level, I don't see why they go back again to the under-21s," said Wenger.

"The target is not to promote the players from the first team to the second team, they are supposed to be promoted from the second team to the first team."

- Three goals in the last five minutes saw Arsenal narrowly triumph 2-1 over Atletico Madrid in the Emirates Cup.

Substitute Andrey Arshavin looked to have won the game on 85 minutes only for German Pacheco to restore parity for the Spaniards almost immediately.

But the Russian, with the final kick of the game, secured a win for the Gunners from the tightest of angles.

The rules of the tournament mean Atletico were still awarded a point for their goal, while Arsenal collected five (three for the win and two for scoring twice) and lead the four team table.

-Arsenal's players are upbeat about the season ahead, despite the loss of Emmanuel Adebayor.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has spoken about bringing Inter Milan midfielder Patrick Vieira back to the club.

And defender Bacary Sagna said: "The mood is good and everyone is looking forward to the new season. We will be a competitive team."

-Arsenal ace Andrey Arshavin is stressing out over driving around London!

“I struggle with the parking and the fact you have to pay with a credit card,” said Arshavin. “In Russia, I just paid for everything with cash.

“Then there’s the congestion charge. It’s not the money I object to but all the things you have to do – codes to enter, SMS messages you have to send etc.”

One thing Arshavin has got used to, though, is English food.

“It took me a while, but everything’s okay now my wife is here,” he admitted.

Andrey Arshavin: It's 'Very Cool' To Play With Cesc Fabregas At Arsenal
The pint-sized Russian is relishing the chance to play alongside the Gunners' skipper...

QUOTE
Andrey Arshavin was all smiles after Arsenal won the Emirates Cup, and has showered praise on his club captain, Cesc Fabregas.

"Cesc and I now understand each other better," said Arshavin, speaking to Russian newspaper Sport Express.

"To play with him is very cool.

"The main thing is that this [Emirates Cup] must not be our last trophy this year."

The 28-year-old then reflected on the performance put out during the tournament, and on the team spirit that exists within the Gunners' squadron.

"The atmosphere in the team is very good," he said.

"In general I was very pleased with the tournament.

"I liked that we went to the stadium at midday and there was plenty of time to talk closely. There was a lot of fun together and we don't get the same chance at the training ground."

Having emerged victorious in the Emirates Cup, Arsenal will now play host to Valencia on August 8.

Arsene Wenger Warns: Arsenal Will Bid For Messi If Barcelona Keep Pursuing Fabregas
The Gunners' boss gave Barca a little taste of their own medicine, albeit with tongue firmly in cheek...

QUOTE
Arsene Wenger showed how relaxed he is about Barcelona's persistent pursuit of his captain, Cesc Fabregas, by jokingly commenting to journalists that if the Catalan giants don't give up their Cesc chase, he will mount a bid for Barca's global superstar, Lionel Messi.

The point Wenger was making is that the likelihood of midfielder Fabregas moving to Camp Nou is about as distant as that of Messi signing for Arsenal.

And he underlined it by insisting that there was ‘no chance’ the 22-year-old former Barca youth product would leave the Emirates any time soon - in the same way that it would be futile for the Gunners to try prising Argentine phenomenon Messi, also 22, from Barcelona.

Messi has a €150 million (£130m) buy-out clause in his Barca contract.

"I have made a bid for Messi and nobody speaks about it," quipped Wenger, according to the Daily Mail. "It is the same [as the situation with Cesc].

"How can people think we will sell Fabregas now, one day before the championship starts? We are not in a weak financial position, we don’t need to sell anybody.

"He is committed to the club and he has told me that. We cannot master the noises coming out of Spain.

"This is his sixth year [at Arsenal]. What he wants is to win trophies for the club."

Turning to the season that kicks off for the Gunners at Everton on Saturday, Wenger stated his belief that Arsenal will be Premier League title contenders, saying, "At the start we race for the top spot. After, the minimal target is the top four but you don’t start the season thinking like that.

"Maybe some of our fans have the fear we will drop out of the top four. That’s guided by fear, not objective assessment of our performances."

Referring to last season's poor start, Wenger added, "After 14 games we had lost five and that was too many.

"At the moment, nobody looks at us as a potential fighter for the championship. I believe we have to keep serene, not put unneeded pressure on our shoulders and focus on how we want to play."

Arsene Wenger Wants Arsenal To Win The Premier League
The Gunners gaffer hopes his side can beat the odds and win the league title...

QUOTE
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that his side will aim to lift the Premier League title at the end of the season.

"The ambition is to finish as high as possible," Wenger is quoted by The Guardian as saying.

"What is as high as possible is to finish first, it is as simple as that.

"The competition is of a high level and many aspire to [win the Premier League], so let's continue to play the game the way we want to play it, and I believe we can show that we have made big steps forward."

When quizzed about whether the Gunners will be hurt by the loss of experienced campaigners Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor, the Frenchman was resolute.

"We are young and have developed," he said.

"Why should we not be better in August than we were in March?

"We lost two great players.

"However, we have bought [Thomas] Vermaelen to replace Kolo and we have Eduardo back, who for me is a great player.

"We have players who develop very well and are young, like [Carlos] Vela, [Nicklas] Bendtner, [Theo] Walcott, who are all strikers, so I do not feel we are short in these positions."
The rumour mill has gone quiet regarding the prospective transfers of Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh and Fulham defender Brede Hangeland, and Wenger was asked if he had any plans to recruit anyone else into the north London outfit.

"I have all the players in place," he responded.

"If we need to add one or two more, the transfer period is open until August 31.

"Ideally you don't want to move any more, but you always have to adjust. If there is a need there, we will do it."

Arsenal to offer William Gallas new contract

QUOTE
Arsenal want William Gallas to extend his stay at The Emirates.

The 32 year-old France international defender has ten months left on his current contract and can walk away from the club on a free transfer next June.

But manager Arsene Wenger has been hugely impressed with the form of Gallas over the last 12 months and wants him to play for at least one more season.

Gallas has enjoyed a renaissance in form since he lost the captaincy 18 months ago after publicly criticising his teammates.

His temperament was also questioned after he staged an angry sit down protest during Arsenal’s surrender of two points in a Premier League game at Birmingham in February last year.

Cesc Fabregas replaced him as captain but that decision also signaled a revival in Gallas’s form – and he is now producing the kind of inspirational play which Wenger wanted when he signed him from Chelsea as part of the deal that took Ashley Cole to Stamford Bridge.

But a major sticking point could be the length of any new deal.

Wenger has a policy of offering only one-year contracts to players over the age of 30 – and Gallas has  was 32 a week ago. It was the philosophy that cost Arsenal the services of Robert Pires three years ago. Pires wanted two years on his contract while Arsenal only offered one.

Gallas is set to make the same stand. He believes he can play longer at the highest level and is thought to want at least two years more.

Wenger is clearly hoping that Gallas will relent now that he is playing better than at any time in his Arsenal career.

Tomas Rosicky has given Arsenal a boost in a week when they are hot favourites to confirm their place in the Champions League group stage.

With a two goal lead from the first leg of their play-off against Celtic at Parkhead, Arsenal seem assured of a place in the next round. And Rosicky is ready to make his return to first team football two weeks ahead of schedule.

Rosicky damaged a hamstring in training to postpone his comeback after 18 months on the sidelines because of a serious thigh injury. It was feared that it would be another fortnight before he could resume training but his recovery has been so rapid that he will return to training on Monday.
