Looks like Toure is set to leave. Our match against Man City will be mouth watering IMO. We play Man City in our 4th game of the season me thinks.

QUOTE(giotto @ Jul 29 2009, 11:31 AM)
No doubt Kolo will be a massive lost to us. Tho his form has been pretty erratic, one game he could be massive, another game he would make mistake that makes us lose games. He's a good tackler and tracks back very well. Lost count the number of times he's made one of those crunching last ditch tackle that saved us. His timing and his runs are second to none among Arsenal defenders.
*
He will be a massive lost to us, only if we do not sign a replacement. Yes, Kolo is a fantastic tackler I won't deny that. But his positional sense and heading sometimes leaves a lot to be desired IMO. Many a time we see this exposed but his pace more often than not bails him out of these situations. Hence why the huge amount of last ditch tackles. If Kolo had some decent positioning there wouldn't even be a need for last ditch tackles. Gallas is similar to Kolo which is why his shortcomings were magnified even further during recent seasons whereas Sol Campbell made up for everything Kolo lacks hence the brilliant partnership.

Andy Gray once questioned "Why is it does the Arsenal defenders always have to get back to make the tackle but they are never ALREADY there to make the tackle". Not the actual quote but something like that.

Hi there... hope you guys like the poll. Thanks for the idea brows.gif

Glad to know that many here can accept the fact that Toure is leaving (be it a speculation or truth).

Conclusion:
1. Financially, 15M for a defender of his last year contract is a good deal.

2. Football-wise, losing a 29 years old defender with 7-8(?) years experience at the same club, it's a bad deal.

3. From Arsenal POV, losing a regular in this already weak defence is a big NO-NO.

4. Losing Toure to a potential Top-4 "contender" is even a bigger NO-NO.
Just wait and see if the deal goes through first.
*
Footballistically it may be a blessing in disguise IMO. If Toure stays no doubt our first choice defensive partnership will be Gallas/Toure which we all have seen enough of how inaffective they are as a defensive partnership because both are similar in terms of strengths and weaknesses and neither would want to sit on the bench. Toure leaving opens the door to whoever Arsene chooses to pair Gallas with. Right now I'd assume it would be Vermaelen and IF Vermaelen turns to be the perfect foil (making up for Toure's poor positioning and heading) we could be looking at a very tasty season for us. Also, one Centreback spot up for grabs amongst Vermaelen, Djourou, Silvestre and Senderos assuming he stays. Competition for starting spots is always welcome IMO.

Agree about losing Toure to City though. Would have preferred him to be sold elsewhere if he were to leave. Same as Adebayor. But to be honest we were never going to get the type of money we received for them elsewhere.

Rosicky injured again doh.gif

Supposedly something "minor". But we'll see if he will be ready for the start of the season never mind the Emirates Cup next week.

Yes, I'd be very very disappointed if Arsene went back for Vieira. Makes absolutely no footballing sense whatsoever. Song and Denilson are much better players than the current Vieira. You all know how it was like with Silvestre last season.

it's not so much of getting Viera to be our 1st choice... but rather a good, solid backup player with vast experiences in many finals and head-to-head encounters. I'd take that!
*
I won't doubt the fact that he has the experience but even with all the experience in the world if your body and physical attributes can no longer keep up and complement your experience its virtually useless. Even with your experience you can predict what an opponent is gonna do but if your legs or body just won't obey its pointless, at least on the pitch. Much younger, faster opponents will just run rings around you. Moreover if he comes in at backup the likes of Ramsey will pushed further down the pecking order which is not something I'd want.

If its for the sake of passing on his experiences as well as being a mentor in educating our youngsters we are better off employing him as one of our backroom staff.

i got 2 words for u.. Gilberto Silva. He was declining in terms of performance but his presence and experience on the field help us, and help make Flamini looks godlike. It was losing him that cost our DM/CM position to haywire last season. Not flamini. I think Denilson or Song would've been better had Gilberto stayed another season and rotate with them.
*
Gilberto Silva is a totally different case with Vieira. When we let Gilberto loose he was a player on decline and I agree with you about letting him go a little too early however the Vieira now is a player that has already declined to a point that he has lost it completely in terms of physicality. I'd still be up for a Gilberto return but not the current Vieira. If Wenger had brought back Vieira 2 years ago I would have called it a masterstroke but if he does bring him back now I would call it a lost plot on Wenger's part.

14. Merida - Played the Ramsey role in the second half and did a better job than the Welshman. His fame may not be as prominent as Ramsey and Wilshere, but he deserves a spot in the first team, although not necessarily the starting 11 yet. MERIDA 13? tongue.gif
*
I thought with Ramsey our midfield looked more solid. Merida was lively at the start but I found him missing and somewhat anonymous in some parts of the match which happened too often for my liking hence we were being dominated in midfield on numerous occasions after Merida's introduction. This is Merida's main weakness which is IMO keeping him out of more first team opportunities and also one of the main differences between him and Fabregas at the moment despite being very similar players. If he can learn to impose himself in games a little more I think we might have another pretty special player here. Looked very good technically and constantly got himself into some very good positions into the box with some well timed late runs from midfield.

Fans on other footballing forums have already begun to "turn against" Theo by claiming that Jack is so much better than Theo who "only has pace".

I don't buy any of that. People are often too quick to jump to conclusions about a player. The last time Theo did something magnificent (eg hattrick for England, the assist vs Liverpool) he was hailed as the next best thing, a few quiet games and absence due to injuries later and suddenly he's a one trick pony who only knows how to run. Geesh.

Don't buy too much into the Wilshere hype. He's brilliant, in fact phenomenal; but people are quick to forget that Burnley (OH YES BURNLEY) made him look ordinary, and he also had several mediocre performances in the youth team. Let him grow at his own pace, maturing both physically and mentally. Same goes with Theo.

The best scenario would be seeing both Theo and Jack following the footsteps of their predecessors, where one becomes Thierry and the other Dennis. drool.gif
Maybe that's the reason why Arsene is clearing out the old guard. The so-called "band of brothers" definitely exist between the younger players since they have been brought up in the same youth/reserve team. The dismantling of the unbeaten team might have left Kolo and the veterans lonely so it's probably not such a bad thing to see him leave after all.

Anyway,

Yeah agree on the Walcott and Wilshere comparison and about how Walcott should be afraid of being replaced ? We have a diverse enough bunch of players to accomodate the both of them in the same lineup and moreover Arsene has repeatedly said that Walcott's future lies as a striker. I don't see any relevance of how Walcott should be afraid when both will be competing for different positions in the team in future.

Sorry its not that I am underestimating or anything but I don't rate the Scottish League or their teams at all. To be honest I even rate the likes of Everton or even Aston Villa to be better teams than Rangers and Celtic. Pretty straight forward draw for me IMO. If we can't even beat the likes of Celtic its only fitting we don't compete at the Champions League at all. Although I must admit that the first leg in Scotland will be slightly tricky with their stadium atmosphere, fans and all.

Actually, Celtic is a good team also, for me, they are definitely better than Everton, plus they do have some really capable players in their squad. So this will be a dangerous but interesting match.
*
Lol name me at least 1 "capable" player apart from McGeady and Maloney. And don't even mention Samaras because he is a poor man's Ade. Joking lol anyway before yes they were a decent team with fairly capable players I admit. But not anymore. The core that previously made them a decent team has all but left the club. Nakamura has left, and so has Venegoor as well as Bobo Balde. They are more or less a team in transition currently. Not to mention Gordon Strachan was replaced by Tony Mowbray. And we all know how Tony Mowbray likes his teams to play despite having players who are average at best like he has previously shown while at West Brom, positive attacking football which will suit us very nicely indeed as they will no doubt leave gaps at the back for us to exploit. I would be very surprised if we get anything less than a straightforward win over 2 legs.

Ya, Nakamura has gone to Espanyol nod.gif

I would call it a good draw. The team doesn't have to travel far as well. It will just be like an away BPL match and what more against a team we should be able to beat I daresay comfortably.
