Hey I'm thinking of getting a Macbook Pro for college. Probably going for the 13 inch one.
My question is, is it suitable for a student studying commerce/stuff involving figures? |

QUOTE(KepalaRadio @ Dec 18 2009, 01:56 PM) Hey I'm thinking of getting a Macbook Pro for college. Probably going for the 13 inch one. It's just another computer really. The real question I guess is if the subject you study requires some software that isn't available in Mac? If it doesn't have a Mac version to what you need you can still use it through a VM or Boot Camp but not everyone likes that.My question is, is it suitable for a student studying commerce/stuff involving figures? |

I'm choosing a Mac simply because I've never tried one lol. Anyway this is just another possibility. My main concern is the incompatibility of softwares.

QUOTE(KepalaRadio @ Dec 18 2009, 02:47 PM) Well, if you're getting a white Macbook, you should know that its major shortcomings are the lack of ports, and its polycarbonate plastic body scratches easily. In my opinion, it is better to get a Macbook Pro because it has a stronger chassis, SD card slot, FireWire 800, better screen and illuminated keyboard. I'm not experiencing any real problems with my Macbook Pro 13". In fact, it is much better than my old Vaio FW in terms of stability, ease of use, graphics and overall performance. There are some quirks here and there but most of them could be solved through software updates. If you're going to use this for class, Microsoft Office is a must for compatibility. Well, you could install a Mac version of it or install Office 2007 in Windows via Boot Camp. The original copy of Office 2008 is RM599 but maybe there's a better deal, maybe you could as the other forumites about this as well. I have both iWork and Office 2008 installed and to be honest, I prefer iWork. It is easier to use but of course, compatibility with Office is still a worry. I myself am a student and assignments come in and out like water. You would also need a DVI to VGA adapter if you plan on using your notebook alongside with a projector. That'll cost RM99, if I'm not mistaken. This is a must if you want to present a slideshow made by Keynote because I heard that there's some compatibility issue there and also availability of certain fonts on non-mac machines. Battery is not an issue on Macbooks and/or Macbook Pros because their batteries are of high capacity. Mine could last around 5 ~ 6 without the use of WiFi and 3 ~ 4 hours with WiFi on a single charge. It's perfect for me because there's 27 laptops and there are only around 4 power outlets in my class. You might also feel awkward when first using the OS X because they way apps install and handled is different on OS X. You could easily get watch a tutorial video from the Apple website. Also, there are only 2 USB ports, so you might want to opt for a USB replicator and also an external hard disk because the hard disk on the Macbook Pro is only 160GB while it is 250GB on the White Macbook. That's my 2 cents, hope it helps |

Ah thanks for the really informative replies. Well, based on what I've read so far it seems that it would take some time to get used to using it since it's a completely new OS to me, and there are compatibility issues.
Another matter that i'll have to enquire is, based on your personal experiences using the Macbook/Macbook Pro or any Mac for that matter, is it "suitable" for a student? Because currently I'm just having an impression that the Mac OS is more 'simplistic' compared to Vista/W7. I'm going to start college on January next year so I'm just asking around for a good laptop. |

YES ;p imagine having all ur important almost-done assignments, long long notes n all...then suddenly u lose it all cuz ur notebook kena virus. die lo. it's pretty common ooo Another matter that i'll have to enquire is, based on your personal experiences using the Macbook/Macbook Pro or any Mac for that matter, is it "suitable" for a student?
