Guys, I am really unhappy with this phone's GPS. It is totally useless/unusable!

I was in a car, it took me like 2 mins just to get locked. I restarted my phone, and went to a field/rooftop, still took ages to get gps lock.

I could say nothing about its accuracy, totally inaccurate. Now I am totally upset.

Am I the only unlucky fella experiencing this prob? How the hell am I supposed to fix this? I really hope it's a Software problem, not the hardware that causes this prob.

i have already mentioned bout it when i got my phone.. you can check out under my sig...

hmmm...i normally on with AGPS, take less than 1minutes... never compare with 5800..

accuracy wise, i m using Garmin, no accuracy problem...somehow when car stopped, Garmin tends to changing its direction around, but once u start moving it will back to normal, i assume this is normal with GARmin..

Added on August 9, 2009, 9:51 pm
for accurate comparison, suggest u turn off both 5800 and N97, just to ensure both are doing cold start

on it back, do a comparison again... cox wat u did previously might due to the 5800 is at hot start stage, so it will lock faster...

For both phones, I am using the built-in maps. I did restart them before I started the map app. It is obvious the tube is far more accurate than the n97. I've already googled this problem and it seems like many people are experiencing this. I can only hope for it to be a software problem.

just installed invisibleshield over the weekend. Its awesome cause the phone looks clean after that. Better than the cheapo ones i was using earlier. The only draw back is that it took me 2 hrs to install it. The deterioration on srolling with he lcd just needs some getting use to

When you use gps on this phone, eg nokia maps or garmin, does it use the 3g connection to connect to the gps satelite?

If yes, then why the stand alone gps navigator does not use 3g connection?

standalone gps navigator do not have service provider to operate....

A-gps, is just a enhancement for mobile phone to get quicker fix by getting location info from base station of ur service provider.

GPS:

Haven't tried the phone gps, but I have a standard Garmin car GPS, and can confirm that lock time can reach 10-15 minutes. This is unfortunately normal for GPS devices.

is it true that A-GPS will lock your position and also show you your current position you're facing? Because N97 have the built in compass as well.

So, if I use N97 for GPS navigation, it will continously using 3G to connect.

If I am using 3G pay per use, then it will very costly?

No. A-GPS only will try to connect once when you launch the application (e.g. GMXT or Nokia Maps). After that, once satellite is locked, it will not use A-GPS again. Until you close/exit the application and run again.

I'm not sure if A-GPS will connect again if lost satellite signal.
