Hi all N97 brothers and sisters!
My first post. I am on the black team, but got my gf a white so all balanced smile.gif

My phone has been working without problems (1 week old) but my gf had problems. Yesterday while she was editing her contacts, the phone froze, so she had to turn off and on, and then her complete contact list was gone!!!!

Now the phone is still acting weird, when assigning speed dial keys, the numbers 2, 3, 4 does not work??? First speed dial key that can be assigned is 5... So strange.

Oh, on both phones, we need to push the unlock key 3 times to unlock, first time push the phone unlocks but screen is too dark to see, then push again to relock, the push again to unlock now with proper light... Weird, but a small hazzle I can live with.

A friend in Nokia pointed me to a program that might enable messages like sms to be stored as conversations/threads (like iphone and win mobile), instead of individual to and from messages.
I have not had time to try it but will soon. If you are interested it is here:
http://forum.dailymobile.se/index.php/topic,5216.0.html
if you want to read about it search "free isms" in google. Lots of links.
It seems that version 1.02 is better than v1.03.

Here is a keylock/unlock program that allows to assign other keys than the default button to lock/unlock.

I signed up at Maxis for unlimited data, costs 99RM per month.
If you pay as you go, the max they will charge is 150RM, even if you dl more than that would cost.
Both are for Maxis postpaid, don't know how prepaid is.

GPS:

Haven't tried the phone gps, but I have a standard Garmin car GPS, and can confirm that lock time can reach 10-15 minutes. This is unfortunately normal for GPS devices.

Give us the link. PLS biggrin.gif
By the way, anyone know why the Qwerty name Qwerty? There must be a reason. laugh.gif
*
QWERTY because of how the upper left keys are positioned - Q-W-E-R-T-Y. Early typewriters had different layout but because they were mechanical, the letters got jammed when typing fast, so they developed the QWERTY layout to keep frequently used letters away from each other.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QWERTY

PS:
About batterylife, cause many have complained about short battery life on the N97. I disagree. If you turn off all the streaming/real-time updates, the phone lasts very long - more than 24 hours without dropping the first bar on the battery status.
Even with all those turned on (push email, gmail, fb, news) the phone lasts abt a day, which is normal compared to HTC and iPhone.

*
In the home screen, press options - in the menu press "show open apps." - now you see all your open apps. To close, press and hold the app icon, and wait for menu to appear. The menu will show "open" and "exit".

I was late to the office this morning. Sigh...

I used the alarm feature for the first time, set the time, set the ringtone (a nice one from Faye Wong), then when I went to bed, I changed to silent profile. Guess what, during the silent profile, the phone will vibrate with no ringtone at all. Sob sob. Didn't notice about that.

Guess I have to go back to my motorola for the alarm ar.
*
You can just change the profile settings for the silent profile to make the alarm sound on I think.

I checked already. No such feature under Silent profile ar... Pengsan
*
Did you try if Alarm would qualify as warning tone? I am not sure, just guessing.
BUT - there is a workaround, just put your Silent Profile on Timer, so it will end just before your Alarm starts ringing smile.gif At least that is better than oversleeping.

About N97 poor satellite reception : Fuh! I google everywhere then found out about N97 weaknesses - one of it is the internal GPS receiver - sucks! - Much wide gap between 5800XM - previous model having better reception though.
There is a guy  ( Search GPS-fix N97 in youtube) modified his N97 by attaching copper wire to the antenna and walla.... the accuracy / elevation turns even better - but his phone has no warranty) . Why Nokia keep distributing another sucks phone - just the same case happen for N95 before. Damn.... its better to have Omnia
*
Hmm...I think the GPS on the phones are like the cameras. Not really comparable to the real things, but good enough to have fun with...
But it sucks if they actually good make the GPS better in an easy way but for some reason isn't...

I'm using hotlink and I don't know why I cant send/retrieve mms, and I cant surf the internet if I use the Maxis connection, not wifi.
And I tried to download a new setting for my phone from hotlink site. N97 is still not listed. So in my humble opinion, 5800 locks faster than n97 because there is already a working setting for 5800, not n97. And it uses a little of ur airtime to lock up. Forgive me if I am wrong
*
I may have the answer to your problem.
1. Make sure you have a 3G enabled sim-card.
2. Make sure you have the correct settings in your phone, if you need the settings go here: http://www.maxis.com.my/phonesettings/index.asp I assume it is the same settings for Maxis postpaid and Hotlink...
3. If all above is correct, you can see you have 3G on your phone network status, but still no mms/internet, it can be this:
I had the same problem with evertytime I changed phone, even though it worked fine on the old phone.

It is caused by APN restrictions. You can check your status by going to: Settings - Connectivity - Admin Settings - APN control
then the phone will check if you have restrictions. If it says there are restrictions, you can choose deactivate restrictions - it will ask for a PIN2 code. For Maxis the code is 1234. If this doesn't work don't try more than one more time. If you try more than 4 times the sim card gets locked and it is a bigg hassle going to Maxis and fix again. So if 1234 doesn't work, call Maxis support, but it worked for me.
Once APN is deactivated, you can surf. It is done in 30 seconds.

It is basically same as described here, but I adjusted it for N97:
http://inicholas.net/2008/11/10/packet-dat...comment-page-2/

Worst part, I called Nokia and Maxis several times over several months the first time it happened to me, noone figured this out. Finally got it through a friend who is working at Nokia support, who asked internally for 2 weeks.

Holy cow, it works! Thanks a lot dude, I really thought Hotlink didn't have a working setting for n97 yet. So I didn't complain or didn't do anything.
Thanks mate, I now can already receive MMS and enable A-GPS. What was the restriction actually? Why was I the only one had that problem?
It has something to do with having admin rights to your sim. But I have no idea why it only affects some and not all when they change phone. You are lucky, it took my total 6-8 months the first time to figure this out smile.gif

so u guys suggest to buy a garmin it self?

i am considering to buy a stand a lone garmin, but the sales person keep saying buy a new phone + garmin install is more worth it.

i need to travel very often.

can u guys pls suggest me?
*
If you need the gps for driving a lot in car then you should absolutely get a Garmin stand-alone. They are much more user friendly and come with the equipment to attach it to your dashboard and car charger.

I think the phone gps is more for casual use and special situations if you don't have anything else to use.

Hi there,
I got a question here. When you slide sideways on the homescreen, the widgets will show/hide right? Or does the whole screen will move (eg screen with no widgets will flip over to another screen with widgets).
Thanks.
*
Yes, sliding sideways will switch between a) showing all widgets/shortcuts to hide all widgets and b) just show screen with your background picture and the clock on top.

can connected wit wifi but when open web page got a problem is web:no gateway reply.
*
Make sure your browser is actually using Wi-fi connection to connect. If you are using wi-fi, then no gateway reply is network related - meaning that the webpage you try to access is offline/not working, wrong address etc, and not a phone issue.
If you are using mobile network to browse, then no gateway reply can be because of wrong connection settings or local rights on your phone, OR can also be network related.

wanna ask something about going online...
if i do lots of twitter and facebook, what kind of package of mobile internet from masix should i choose... is that same as blackberry and iphone internet package??
*
Check your latest phonebill and see how much data u used. The max they charge you is 150RM, but if you sign up for unlimited you only have to pay 99RM. So, if your current data charge is above 99RM you see how much you can save.
