I Saw The Devil (2010)

Shocking. Nerve racking. Brutal. Very, very intense stuff. Not for the faint of heart. You have been warned.

This is a revenge film type thriller, right up the alley of horror fans.

When searching for 'Top Horror Films of the Decade', this showed up on a few list. Curious, I decided to watch it.

It is a Korean film that was released 10 years ago.

What unfolded was utterly shocking and even if you're a legit horror fan and used to the blood/gore/violence, you might not be prepared for this.

Simply put, this is a very, very explicit look at a serial murderer and his cruel inhumane deeds.

It's not violence thrown in for the sake for it, there is a 'reason' behind it all.

A man is driven to take revenge on his wife's brutal murder (that's an understatement) and decides to go after each suspect of the murder.

...until he actually comes face-to-face with true evil, the 'devil' himself in the form of a human.

This man knows no pain, this man has absolute zero remorse and has absolute no fear in repeating the same cruel deeds.

No spoilers, but at the end... you will either feel relieved or left unsatisfied, e.g. wanting more pain inflicted on the murderer (believe it or not).

Clocking it at nearly 2 1/2 hours, this one is unmissable if you're a fan of the genre, but be warned.

The acting performances of the cast is legit award winning and the whole film never feels boring / out of shock value.

Needful Things (1993) (Addendum)

This movie is one of my favorite horror movie.

This horror is not the in your face horror like Freddie Kruger.

Instead horror here is expressed by how people treat people....

Yes, the devil is in this movie.

And no... all the horror in this movie, is not done by the devil per say, let me break one of my own law of not revealing any plot in my review here by stating in this movie, the devil tempts you by flaming your greed and getting you to decide what choices you make.

For a full break down/comparison between the original release and this TV Extended Cut (eg director's cut) please goto the below link

Needful Things Theatrical Version vs TBS Extended Version

I cannot tell you how happy I am to discover this "new release", because it allows me to see new scenes that I have never imagine existed, for a movie that I really like.

How is this cut compared with the original cut, the original cut flows much better and does the story telling efficiently.

The director's cut is 3 hours long and gives alot of background details for the different character, and as the name suggest, works better and a TV cut.

I finally understood the significance of the bronze bell on top of the door, in the shop Needful Things.

The original cut, seem like a remaster to me, picture wise, this movie never looked better

My only let down was the audio is DTS Master Audio, stereo only...

If you are a fan, or if you have not seen this movie before, I really recommend this movie.

My Two Sen

Ghost Stories (2017)

Summary (from IMDB)
Skeptical professor Phillip Goodman embarks on a trip to the terrifying after being given a file with details of three unexplained cases of apparitions.

My thoughts:
Not bad at all. I mean it wasn't the best of horror movies but this is definitely a good watch imo. Enjoyed the film, and even the rare jump scares are pretty good. There's a plot twist in this and it's definitely the least of your expectation. Good British horror is... /koff rare /koff but do give this one a chance.

Betul. The 3 stories were pretty good on its own. For some reason it was just plain creepy... and then you have the unexpected ending hmm.gif

Apparently there's quite some Easter eggs/ hints along the show, just that we didn't notice.

It has a very "clever" script.

Have you watch Scary Stories to Tell In The Dark?

I do hope they make part 2

Not sure if anyone has seen 'Us' already but i just caught it. Was wondering if people here would consider that a thriller or horror??

And how do you think it compared to Get Out? I thought Get Out was better but Us was scarier.

Covid-19, covid-19 go away.

I have not visited a cinema for quite some time now.

Firstly, there was not much offerings I was interested in (Eg. Fantasy Island was trashed by the critic and The Rescue was pulled from the cinema because of the Covid-19)

So, I went to the cinema today and thank goodness I did.

This is an excellent movie.

Director is Leigh Whannell

Writers is also Leigh Whannell (screenplay by), Leigh Whannell also did the screen story by... you see where this is going?

For the uninitiated, Leigh Whannell had been partner in crimes with James Wan since the Saw (2004).

He wrote Insidious and also directed one of them (the third one, if memory serves)

Back to this movie. Whoever is involved with the casting for this movie should also be commended (well I can think of one I would change, and have to add, I would be nitpicking)

Prior to the release of The Mummy (2017), Universal announced their monster unified universe, Dark Universe, trying to give MCU a run for their money. Many a project was announced and many a big names, named and signed to appeared in these high profile projects.

The Mummy (estimated budget of $125,000,000 made only $80,227,895 at the US box-office. Do bare in mind such big budget movies, have big budget marketing fund, usually in the USD100 millions range, you can see what kinda loses it was for Universal) bombed at the box-office (I honest think it was a decent movie, and would have faired much better, if it was NOT called The Mummy). With that, alot of people (including the creator, Alex Kurtzman) thought that the Dark Universe would go out with a whimper...

Well, Universal with Blum House made this, with a budget of USD 7,000,000 (bare in mind, each episode of Mandalorian is costing Disney+ USD 13,000,000...) and at last count, has a cumulative worldwide Gross of $102,226,015.

That is a GREAT return of investment and I hear, that Universal and Blum House is currently talking about a Dracula movie...

I enjoyed this movie immensely.

The amount of information that audience gather, in the first 10 mins of the movie, is equivalent to the storyline of the last Insidious movie. I was wondering why with Leigh Whannell writing the story for Insidious: The Last Key (2018), the story was so.... lean. After watching this, I suspect he was putting more effort into this script compared with that Insidious movie...

As mention, I like the cast. Elisabeth Moss was perfect for Cecilia Kass. She just fit the part, perfectly.

Haunted eyes, a ball of nervous energy, so.... broken.

With such limited budget, the "invisible" parts/effects were very convincing.

The ending...

2020 movies have been underwhelming.

If this indicate what is to come, for the rest of the year, I can only say, bring them on!!

Horror films worth mentioning IMO:
1) Deep Rising (1998) [Horror meter: 6/10]
It's about band of pirates attempt to stage a hijack of luxurious cruise ship only to find out sea monsters are crawling all over the ship.
My all time favourite B-rated. Watched it since I was 8 years old and I believe I've rewatched it 12 times in my lifetime.
Like the movie Jaws, the monster is kept in suspense and only revealed mid-half of the movie.

Gorey/frightening scenes include:

Definitely would recommend if you like action packed shooting scenes with unlimited bullets biggrin.gif

2) The Thing (1982) [Horror meter: 7/10]
I believe most of us here already know about this movie.

Scariest part for me was

3) Annihilation (2018) [Horror meter: 8/10]
I'm surprised nobody mentioned about this movie. It's hard to understand but it's really FRIGHTENING especially when you watch without knowing what is going to happen.

Famous frightening scenes include:

4) John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness [Horror meter: 9/10]
Watched this when I was 10 and had to skip most of the parts. It's not my favourite but am mentioning here because it's perhaps the scariest I've watched so far.
**** that I'm not going to watch it again.

I did not know at all the franchise "The Grudge" and its trilogy of the years 2004, 2006 and 2009, but I still wanted to try the horrific experience with this number 4: bad choice! To sum up in a few words, different people begin to have frightening and dangerous hallucinations after setting foot in houses haunted by tortured spirits. The story is not chronological (to complicate it a bit) and takes place at different points on the globe. The scenario is therefore nothing exciting and original at first glance, but it is far from being the only flaw !! Because side characters, dialogues and staging, it is weak, hyper predictable and without much interest. Certainly, a horror film must try to scare but not only! I had the impression of boarding an old ghost train forgotten at the bottom of a funfair without soul. Of distressing poverty.

People actually thought The Grudge was confusing? It has been disjointed chronologically since the original Japanese (which were categorized by the characters instead). And some part of the stories dealt with souls being stuck in a timeloop.

That said, horror remakes very seldom are better these days. Especially westernized ones, haha.

Fantasy Island (2020)

When I first heard of this, I was ecstatic.

Then I found out it was by Blumhouse and they were giving it a horror treatment, I was over the moon!!

Then news trickled in that the reviews were poor... and then Covid-19 and then MCO, I missed it at the cinemas...

I had just finished watching this and it is...

**Sigh**

It started off promising. (Anyone watched it at the cinema? How did they show the two brother's bits?? The pool party, Their attraction to the opposite sex (or otherwise...)???

You usual quadrilogy structured movie, each character goes off and have their fantasy...

The middle happened and I went... huh?

And then the horrible third arch...

Over-reached much...

Great idea.

Terrible script.

Most horrible Cast (Why would you hire Michael Pena for this???? It is like hiring Jerry Lewis for Macbeth???? WHY???!!!???)

This movie actually made money.

Budget of 7 million made 35 million...

They should just make more Invisible Man (2020) rather than this...

Remember the Hervé Villechaize (Tattoo) running and excitedly proclaim, "The Plane, The Plane!"

I literally rolled my eyes when

Endless Night (1972)

When you visit Imdb website, you will see that this movie is categorized as Crime, Drama and Horror...

Why would this movie be cataloged as horror, I will never know...

Several note worthy points about this movie.

Based on Agatha Christie's book (Same name)

Hayley Mills stars in this (The actress from the original Parent Trap)

One of the last movie with George Sanders (he also voice Shere Khan the Tiger, Disney's Jungle Book 1967)

This is one of the most unscary horror story I have every witness.

The plot have been duplicated acrossed many other movies and tv episodes

Even in the making of the movie, the emphasis was place on Bernard Herrmann being the composer of this film score, rather than the actual story itself...

This movie is a failed horror movie in my book

The Conjuring
the movie was scary in a way that it doesn’t have to have the ghost come out all the time to scare you.
Also, Ju-on movies, another classics that will scare you a lot, the ending will always have some questions left behind

^ bro, if you think Conjuring is great layan insidious Chapter 1 & 2. Then you might change ur perception haha.

Lately, kinda lost respect for horror films purely for the sheer crappy output & stereotypical cliches. Nothin fresh anymore la.
