Oooooh I'm a huge fan of horror movies (to which, most of my friends couldn't share the thrill).

Anyway my top ten (not in order):

1. The Exorcist
2. Jeeper's Creepers
3. Ju-On
4. Shutter
5. The Eye
6. The Exorcism of Emily Rose
7. Silent Hill
8. Child's Play
9. Nightmare on Elm Street (yikes, Freddy Krueger!)
10. Dawn of the Dead (2004)

I admit, the top of the list is definitely undeniably The Exorcist. I didn't expect it to be that scary and had nightmare for 2 nights!!! I bought the ori DVD from my friend who didn't want it... only watched it once since then. Shoved the DVD in one of the drawer downstairs.

Jeeper's Creepers came in totally unexpected. It was a low budget film without much publicity. Friend and I were at the cinema and we saw the trailer... after finishing 1st movie, we went straight to the counter to purchase the tix for JC. It prove to be good.

Exorcism of Emily Rose is like... well, I watched it once in the cinema when it was out and utterly disappointed. However 2 years later when I was rummaging through our DVD collection, I noticed my mum bought it. So out of boredom I put it on our TV and rewatched it. For some reason, it gave me goosebumps and I was scared. Worst part is that I got nosy and started googling for Annilese Michel (since the movie is based on a 'true' story). I kept researching about the history and what happened to her. Then I got freaked out when I stumbled upon a site that hosts the recording (just the sound) of the exorcism ritual of Annilese Michel. Straightaway closed the webpage and went downstairs to watch TV.

I guess everyone's familiar with Child's Play. Was at my neighbour's house when I was a kid (around 10 years old) and they happen to play the video. Watched it with them and the rest is history.

Lastly, I'm a sucker for zombie movies. Why? They creep me out. Sure, they move s-l-o-w but nothing beats quantity! and heck, they jump out at the least expected scenes and then you'll be jumping out from your seat! Plus, Dawn of the Dead is really good because these zombies are super fast. Chances are, you'll hardly outrun them. You can't run and you can't hide. They will get to you in the end.

I didn't know of the show until my friend borrowed it from her housemate. Apparently he bought it (pirated DVD) in Bali together with whole bunch of other movies laugh.gif we were basically leeching off his DVDs. So when I got back, I searched for the DVD (thankfully managed to find it) and bought it!

In a separate note, 28 Weeks Later is also a good watch. I like the plot which tells us how the 'disease' spread and about the carrier(s). Land of the Dead is cool too because it centers on a different concept.

is that so? laugh.gif I only read the last few pages and noticed quite a number of guys instead of ladies. Why is it a good thing...? sweat.gif I don't favour romance or chick flicks. I watch them on TV sometimes but that's all about it. Action, horror, thriller is much better (for me!). Child's Play is pretty good in the 1st and 2nd season. 4th season is laughable.

Serious? Nightmare on Elm Street? Michael Bay? Wow sounds good! Can't wait to see what surprises he'll give us XD

Two of my all-time favourite directors are Tim Burton and Quentin Tarantino. Am hoping that some day they'll work together and come up with a super dark movie laugh.gif

after watching child's play when i was a child, i was scared for a year..tongue.gif..of darkness, dolls, etc..biggrin.gif

i am not sure anyone mentioned this before in this thread but anyone watched the movie version of stephen king's IT? what is your opinion about that movie?
*
Watched it when I was a kid... and yes, I was freaked out after the movie. Interestingly last year I found out that a colleague has the VCD. Borrowed it from her and... well, after rewatching it, there's basically nothing to fear tongue.gif

I'd say in all of Stephen King's movies, Dreamcatcher is the weirdest and freakiest. I just couldn't shake the toilet scene from my head. It's really disgusting ohmy.gif

I managed to catch a little of it on TV several years back and it's pretty good. Yeah it's a twisted Snow White fairytale... it doesn't give you the goosebumps but rather, a little thrill ride.

Omg how come I didn't know there's a horror thread rclxm9.gif

My favourite Thai horror: 4bia (an anthology of 4 tales)

http://asianwiki.com/4bia

Loneliness
Plot: "Loneliness" can really influence someone into doing stupid things. This women is unemployed broken-hearted and desperate for companionship. So when she receives an anonymous SMS from a possible male suitor she doesn't think twice being that "life can't get any worse." But life can get much worse when she encounters something she will regret for the rest of her life.

Tit for Tat
Plot: What kind of terrible things could happen if a group of youths stumbled a cursed Manuscript? A foolish teenage gang get into trouble resulting in expulsion from school. What they don't realize is that their careless and carefree ways have earned them a diploma of death when one of their victims decides to take revenge by putting a curse on what looks like ordinary pieces of paper. By the time they come to the dreadful realization that the paper is cursed...Its Too Late!

In the Middle
Plot: 4 best friends go camping in the middle of the jungle, sharing ghost stories along the way. Later at night they argue over who gets to sleep in the middle of the tent. They have scared one another into believing that a ghost will haunt whoever sleeps on the end. One of the boys foolishly swears, "If I die, I'll come back and haunt who ever sleeps in the middle first". He drowns 20 hours later while water rafting. The night before their final trek out of the jungle the remaining 3 friends have trouble sleeping being that nobody dares to sleep in the middle of the tent. Before the break of dawn, they are startled by the sounds of footsteps walking towards them!

Last Fright
Plot: Pim is a flight attendant assigned to fly solo on a charter flight with the Princess of Khurkistan. What was supposed to be an ordinary flight turns into something tragically more turbulent when the princess dies due to an allergic reaction to something she ate. The royal house of Khurkistan requests that her body be sent back immediately for royal cremation. The airline reschedules Pim to be on duty on what is known in the flying industry as a quick turn flight. Now Pin must endure the passenger less flight alone with the dead body of the princess. But is she really alone?

Night Watch (2004 film)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Watch_(2004_film)

Plot from Wiki
Everybody knows that it is dangerous on night streets. But in this case we are not talking about criminals and maniacs. When night falls, and the forces of Evil rule unchallenged, one can encounter those with whom you will not meet in the afternoon dark magicians, vampires and other evil spirits. Their strength is so great that it is impossible to cope with them with conventional weapons.

In modern-day Moscow, Anton Gorodetsky (Russian: Антон Городецкий) visits a witch named Daria and asks her to cast a spell to return his wife to him, agreeing that she should miscarry her child as part of it. Just as the spell is about to be completed, two figures burst in and restrain Daria, preventing her from completing the spell. When they notice that Anton is able to see them, they realize that he is an Other.

This is a Russian horror movie whereby I got surprised, this is actually really good. Everything was also so strange that I couldn't take my eyes off from the movie.

There's actually a sequel/ part 2 - Day Watch: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_Watch_(film)

If you are a horror/Stephen King fan, you will enjoy it.

This is a very faithful adaptation of the book

This runs rings around the Dark Towers movie, that's for sure.
*
Stephen King fan! Hi-5!!! I enjoyed Dark Towers but something falls short of expectation.

Have not seen the new IT but I'm tempted to read IT. It's sad that the movies aren't really... what I expected when its adapted. One of my all-time favourite is The Shining. The movie isn't very scary but the book is. Have you read/ seen The Shining? Mov_freak

I am assuming that you mean Stanley Kubrick's movie, The Shining (1980) movie.

Or did you mean The Shining (1997) mini series.

I have watched both, several times.

Kubrick's version with Jack Nicholson is more.... atmospheric whereas the Rebecca De Mornay & Steven Weber TV Mini Series is more faithful to the book.

Both has merits, each in it's own way (The movie  was more masterfully executed, the TV series does fill alot of the plot holes in the movie).

Interesting that there is talk about The Shining 2 movie....

I also understand that the Danny character is in other Stephen King novels.

Believe it or not, I don't like reading Stephen King. I don't enjoy his writing still. Used to read alot of Dean Kootz, until he got too dark for me (Did you see one of the adaptations of Dean Kootz Odd Thomas (2013) with Anton Yelchin....)

Also read alot of John Saul, but pretty hard to get his books in Malaysia.

I believe IT is the only Stephen King book I read and discovered I did not enjoy his writing style. The movie is very good.
*
Yes I meant Stanley Kubrick's The Shining biggrin.gif it was good. Although it was an old movie, I really enjoyed it. Didn't watch the mini series but have been wondering for awhile now whether I should. I'll probably give it a go when I have the time.

Oh yes 'shining 2' - book is named "Doctor Sleep" - is a continuation of Danny's story. He grew up and became... an alcoholic like his dad. He did sober up though, and try to set a straight path for himself. He still have his "shine" and found a young girl who has even stronger power than his. The story focuses on a group of creatures who disguise themselves like humans and live off the "shine". They kidnap and torture kids who possess the "shine" and inhale in the "shine" that came out from them. The worse the torture, the more of these shine will be omitted. I loved the book very much. My heart was beating fast and my hands and feet turned cold from reading the book. Had always liked how King describe everything down to the details, and I could imagine all of it happening. I'm a bit skeptical/ afraid when they make his books into films - I'm afraid it's not as good as I expected it to be. IMO half of the movies adapted from this books are somewhat lacking hmm.gif the good ones for me are Shining, Misery, Green Mile, Shawshank, 1408 and Dolores Claiborne. Ok I admit The Mist and Cell wasn't bad but it was typical King's ending.

Awh so you're not a fan of his books. Too bad sad.gif have a lot of his books and King's books are the only one I look forward to reading. He also writes under another pseudonym Richard Bachman.

Did you watch The Green Mile? I was so crazy about it that right after I finished the movie, went online and placed an order for the book laugh.gif picked it up immediately when they told me it's available in KLCC. Another movie that received such attention was "Let Me In" (not by Stephen King). It's a movie creepy in its own way but I couldn't stop looking for the original film (Swedish film) and book.

Odd Thomas? I've heard of it! Haven't seen it though. Will give it a shot hmm.gif and as for John Saul no, have not heard of him. Then again... my problem is I get too fixated with King. Probably time to explore other authors. His books are hard to find? As long as MPH/ Popular had stocked the book in their store before, even if it's out of stock, can always place an order. Sometimes if you want a specific book, can try dropping an email to them with the ISBN number and see if they can help to order it.

You should watch Odd Thomas, it is different, and the ending, I kinda know what happened (I read the book), and still, it was heart wrenching.

It has been some time back since I had read John Saul, so had to do a little bit of research to try and jog my memory and discovered I only read

Sleepwalk (1990) - John Saul (Bantam  ISBN 978-0-553-28834-6)
Second Child (1991) - John Saul (Bantam ISBN 978-0-553-28730-1)

And I also found out why he is not popular in Malaysia, turns out his is.... gay though reading his book, it is not something that he champions (which is strange, since you see Partricia Cornwell's books sold widely in Malaysia)

I have no issue with people's sexual preference, just hypothesizing that it could be why he is not popular here.
*
No wonder Odd Thomas sounded familiar. It was something I'd wanted to watch before hmm.gif will try to look for the movie.

As for John Saul - I don't know, if the reason why he's not popular here is because he's gay - then I'm surprised that people actually look up on the author's life. Also, if you're right, I cannot comprehend the mentality of Malaysians then. Read a book like a clear piece of paper and not judge the author. Doesn't matter whether he's white, black, male, female. LGBT etc - what is wrong with it? I call it mentality. Easily half of the friends in my circle are gays (from the gym), and they are nice people. Sad to see discrimination happens all the time, everywhere.

When it comes to horror... I fear and love them laugh.gif in recent years, there's hardly a good one that could rival stories like Exorcist etc. But here's my list:

- The Exorcist
- Exorcism of Emily Rose
- 4bia (Thai)
- Paranormal Activity
- Salem's Lot (adapted from Stephen King's novel)
- Let Me In (Hollywood) / Let the Right One In (Swedish) - creepy and shocking in its own way
- The Eye, Eye 2 & Eye 10 (HK)
- Ju On (Japanese)
- Dark Water
- Sinister
- 1408
- The Orphanage (Spanish)
- The Shining
- Fright Night
- The Woman in Black
- Mr Vampire (HK olden day Chinese Vampires)
- Haunted Cop Shop I & II
- 28 Weeks Later
- The Mist
- Jeeper's Creepers I
- Trick 'r Treat (one of my all time fav Halloween movie!)
- Inside (French)

Others
- The Descent
- Constantine
- The Ninth Gate
- Dawn of the Dead
- Rigor Mortis (would have worked better without all the fighting and CG)
- Final Destination I & 3 (coz I enjoy roller coaster?)
- The Cell
- Mother!

Honourable Mention (haha):
- Drag Me to Hell
- The Visit
- The Hostel (the idea that you could be kidnapped while travelling, and then tortured in dungeons - is a scary one)

Want to Watch:
- Odd Thomas
- The Invitation
- It Comes at Night
- The Wailing
- The Babadook (downloaded, need to find time to watch)
- Needful Things (yet to finish the book)
- The Killing of a Sacred Deer
- It Follows

The Wailing is the single best horror movie in recent memory for me.
No harm trying Park Chan Wook's Thirst for something out of the box.

If you are adventurous do check out this solid foreign language listing. Plenty of must watch, I've seen 80% and owned a fair bit of it in Blu-ray.

Really? Seems like a must-watch. I'll try to hunt for it when I have the time hmm.gif

Foreign language film! I don't discriminate films; I'll watch as long as they are good lust.gif seems like you have some good stuffs there. Will explore them, thanks!

A little OOT - one movie that's not horror but totally enjoyable is Die Welle - better known as "The Wave" in English. Other than horror, Holocaust films also interest me ( and this foreign movie based on a true story, had been really interesting.

A high school teacher's experiment to demonstrate to his students what life is like under a dictatorship spins horribly out of control when he forms a social unit with a life of its own.

QUOTE(Hevlaska @ Jul 11 2018, 03:32 PM)
wow, as a big fan of horror movies why didnt i stumble here earlier on... now there's so much suggestions on my list laugh.gif

Any one watched the latest Insidious? i felt like crying when credit rolls sweat.gif
*
Exactly! Wished I had visited this section earlier for more horror recommendations ohmy.gif

Insidious: The Last Key? I didn't watch. The story had started to lose its appeal along the way with sequels. Kind of seemed like they're trying to milk the franchise (reminds me of Paranormal Activity, whereby the first 2 was good). I'll still stream or watch it when there's time - just to finish it.

Nice! something to keep us entertained a little.

As Horror genre is kinda "niche" these days, there really isnt much choice in the first place. Generally, its really easy to just watch any Horror that is released without taking significant portion of your time.

Its rather unfortunate that the quality declines on a steep trend over the past 10-20 years. There was a time Thai horror was "the" thing, then comes Japanese, then Korean. As for western, mostly are just jump scares and lack substance, or maybe its because culturally different, thus the "fear factor" isnt good enough as Asians are culturally more superstitious.
*
Totally hitting the spot. Horror is declining. Conjuring is enjoyable as a movie but honestly speaking, it didn't leave much impact. The jump scare was good and timely, but when I walk out of the cinema, fear didn't linger. I slept well with the lights off laugh.gif

Imo good horror instill "real fear" and it creeps out when you're alone, or when you try to sleep unsure.gif

Wow

That is some list!!!

And also some surprises....

I am surprise that

Lights Out (2016)
Don't Breathe (2016)

were left out

Also, you have not watch Needful Things (1993), wow, you are in for a threat.

You may also want to try these science based horrors out

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
The Puppet Masters (1994) (Not the Chucky wannabe, but the one with Donald Sutherland)

If you like black comedy with a dash of horror, do not miss

Death Becomes Her (1992)
*
You're so surprised at my list lol.gif lol.gif lol.gif lol.gif lol.gif so funny your reaction.

Hahahahahaha Don't Breathe is good, and I really enjoyed it. Definitely one of the better ones these days but somehow when I compare it to other movies, kinda didn't really make the cut - at the most would have parked it under Others hmmm. As for Lights Out, it was decent yes, good jump scare and concept. However overall as a story - something is lacking hmm.gif

I have the book - Needful Things - just need some quiet time to finish it. As with all King's books, the start of the book introduced too many characters at once that I couldn't keep up, and the story also starts a little slow. Probably that's why I got distracted and turned to Neil Gaiman instead whistling.gif will eventually pick it up again! Likely to finish the book first, then only watch the movie hahahaha

Thanks for the recommendation, will look it up. Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a popular movie, but have yet to seen it. Ahhh Chucky. The first two, or max 3, was probably the decent ones, but later sequels were pure comedy.

Noooooooo why were you late hahaha but it happens - i've also been late for a movie before.

I guess from your review - the movie is predictable with little surprise to the story line. When I heard the Director is someone else (and not James Wan), part of my interest mellowed down. Knew that it wouldn't be half as good. Probably Wan is too busy directing Aquaman laugh.gif

Just worried that this will be like Annabelle (the first version) where I slept through the movie (watched it at home). Admit I was tired, and the story was too slow and draggy. It's the 20th century - can't believe people can still make boring films!

I wouldn't go as far as calling it boring, it is a gorgeous production and it has a Exorcist and The Omen feel to it. It does "entertain" (you find yourself rooting for the survival of the main casts) I just wish the story was much much "stronger".

The ending did throw me throw me for a loop, because they decided to go there and when they did you get a "warm fuzzy feeling" on the inside....

Er... am I making sense? tongue.gif
*
I'll just be direct from my pov and still call it boring laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif there's a lot of things they can do better as a horror flick. A lot of disappointments despite riding on the name of a successful horror franchise (Conjuring).

HAHAHAHA in a way that didn't make much sense but I guess that means there's some heart warming story in it. Sometimes I just prefer a horrifying story with no sad tale.

P/S: On an unrelated side note, all Astro channels are currently free to watch till 17/9 thanks to Malaysia Day. Went to BIO channel (731) and watched this "My Ghost Story Asia" with each episode featuring true stories of people from different countries on their spooky encounter. Watched S1 Ep4 and it's featuring Malaysia sweat.gif there were 2 stories and the 2nd one by Soo Wincci totally spooked me out. Didn't help that I watched it around midnight and will be going straight to bed afterwards. Go catch it, there are repeats thumbup.gif

I’m a big fan of horror movies because they are mysterious, creepy, and thoughtful.
Top 3 from me, all of them released in 2018!  nod.gif

1. A Quiet Place
A family is forced to live in silence while hiding from creatures that hunt by sound.
Totally enjoyed this one and I pray they make a sequel!

2. The Meg
After escaping an attack by what he claims was a 70-foot shark, Jonas Taylor must confront his fears to save those trapped in a sunken submersible.
It is a good movie and the end is awesome. Worth the watch!

3. Halloween (2018)
Laurie Strode confronts her long-time foe Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.
Shlash. Run. Scream. Loved it. Jamie Lee Curtis is a complete badass!

Ahhh A Quiet Place. It was so quiet in the cinema that I had trouble eating my popcorn or even move around! But yes it's a good movie.

Not really into slasher films as it's mostly..... too gory hmm.gif but the ones I find good were House of Wax, The Hills Have Eyes, Jeepers Creepers I & II, Inside and Don't Breathe.
