Common Kelvin White Balance Settings : 2500K - very strong orange tungsten light 2800K - strong orange tungsten light 3200K - yellowish tungsten light 4500K M6 - flourescent light (most flourescent tubes are green even though our eyes don't see it) 5500K - flash 6500K - daylight (or daylight-balanced flourescent light) 9900K - strong blue stage lighting or evening light
Xenon lighting is rare but that should be between 7000-9000K.
Whenever you enter a new situation that has different WB, just set your Kelvin WB again and test with one shot. You
should be able to do this with practice.
With the Sony A300 and A350, you can use Live View and see the effect of changing Kelvin WB... live!
M = Magenta G = Green 2500K = Blue 9900K = Amber
Take a picture. Supposing the picture is very Green, you need to add the opposite which is Magenta. If the picture is
too Blue you need to go closer to Amber. So if the picture is very blue-green-ish, you will need to go closer to 9900K
M9.
To prevent the built-in flash from appearing in pictures when in wireless flash mode, you can use any of these
methods, or a combination of them:
- use a darker aperture (e.g. F11) - use a lower ISO (e.g. ISO100) - use a shutter speed faster than your flash sync speed so that High Speed Sync is activated (e.g. 1/320th of a
second) - use a piece of exposed, developed negative film in front of your pop-up flash
Here's my Stealth Alpha for those wondering what it's all about. I was supposed to do a write up on how I did it but haven't until now due to unforeseen circumstances. It should be done in a few days. Have to go to my other house n get the stealth materials 1st coz this house don't have the materials I need.

No photoshop ler. I dont even know how to Photoshop. I never bothered to learn Photoshop until now. My camera has been like that since I did the stealth mod. It looks super clean in that pic coz it's dark. It's clean but not imperceptible if u have the camera in ur hands.

I just read in a magazine about this pro who jumped from Canon EOS 1Ds mk3 with every single L lens to A900. Pretty impressive story. He explained about why he jumped. He says it was mainly coz a lot of the L lens cannot keep up with the resolution of the 1Ds mk3 oredi coz those were old lenses made b4 the 1Ds mk3 appeared. In comparison the A900 has an all new array of CZ n G lenses specifically made for it. Mebe u guys can google for it.
Very interesting read and also lotsa superb pictures demonstrating the excellent dynamic range of the A900. I was awed by it actually, many were shot direct into sun n the subjects still can see with nice bright colors!

Welcome back guardians of the Sony Alpha thread!
And yes, ianho's A200 was the inspiration for my formerly stealth A900.

uncle can give some hints to google? i tried "Canon EOS 1Ds mkiii jump to A900" but not find that guy..
This has something to do with dynamic range also. Yes, the A900 has an amazing amount of latitude to pull shadows and highlights with.
Interesting thing about skintones and greens, is the CFA (Color Filtration Array) used;
QUOTE(douglasf13)
The human eye, which most digital cameras model their color filters after, has much more overlap in color channels than film normally has. The A900 CFA's more closely resemble a film color response.
You can read more about the difference here by using the graphs on page 15. Sony is more similar to the graph on the right, whereas Canon/Nikon are more similar to graph on the left (although Canon and Nikon have different channels that overlap):
Because there is less overlap in greens compared to Nikon, Sony is able to render less mushy grass. Because there is less overlap in the blues compared to Canon, Sony is able to render less mushy skin.
The disadvantage of this is, because the CFAs are denser with Sony, it causes more noise, because there is less light hitting the sensor, which results in needing higher amplification for high ISO values. Medium Format Digital Backs have a similar problem.
Sony could choose the more popular route of sacrificing color for better high ISO performance, in order to appease reviewers, but I'm happy with their decision. The A900 is starting to develop a nice little user base of former Nikon/Canon shooters for this very reason.
This has something to do with dynamic range also. Yes, the A900 has an amazing amount of latitude to pull shadows and highlights with.

Now that's interesting. I did knew that Sony HAD to have something in benefit by sacrificing ISO performance. I mean, surely a large corporation with long history would know how to implement such a thing, eh?

mm.. i tried out the body a330 today. i would say, i left disappointed. the weight, grip and feel. i prefer the older version. am choosing between sony 28mm f2.8, sony 50mm f1.8 and tamron 17-50mm f2.8 for my next lens. a newbie here. i do potrait, food photography and landscape. any advise? thanks.

what other lens do you have? for me (no lens), I'd choose the tamron 1750 f2.8 for the flexibility alone for different shooting needs.

tamron 17-50mm f2.8 i think can help you with those conditions.
thanks. at the moment am using a350. twin kit. what do you think?
IMHO, if you are satisfied with the "performance" of your kit lens, then maybe it would be better to choose a different reach lens. But if you are not satisfied with what your kit lens are giving you, then tamron 17-50mm f2.8 is a nice choice. (but the 50mm f1.8 is tempting )

i've tried 50mm f1.8 today. the bokeh effect is impressive. the tauke quote me rm570. but btween minolta 50mm f1.7 and sony 50. which one will you prefer?
sifus...... can i ask a few questions? wat is the best price for the F42 and F58? and also is it good to buy a F42 first or just save more and buy the F58 straight?

buy the new one la better .. new coating, new warranty, new lens.. the 50mm f1.7 is very old oredi..
guys, minolta 28mm f2.8 at rm380. good price for that lens? am keen on street, landscape and potrait.
it's just an ok ok lens... not exactly the sharpest lens around wide open is not very sharp, just like our kit lens 18-70mm at smaller aperture it's much better

My landscape shot was taken with sony A200 ever since i bought it last year. I'm still using kitlens for my landscape shot, there's few using Tamron 70-300 as i love to see the moon/sun to appeared bigger in my picture. And i only have CPL, ND8 and a set of Graduated Neutral Density Filter. For this kind of shot www.flickr.com/photos/noracarol/3485949754/ i attached ND8 filter, Cokin P121S &P121M ND Gradual filters so that i can get a perfect round sun and a right exposure sky for my slow shutter shot. There's also tips from pro photographer to go out shooting for sunset on a slightly hazy weather, its the time when the sun appeared rounder that usual.
To get a beautiful sky sunset colors, it is advisable for you to always wait for 5/10minutes after the sun disappeared into the horizon as its the time when the sky appeared to be more colorful and vibrant than during sunset. The clouds (on sunset) after rain also more dramatic than normal day. Maybe you can also try to set your camera to 'cloudy' white balance when you go out shooting or set to auto and adjust the wb in Sony Image Editor later. Take a look at this link www.vividlight.com/articles/312.htm and www.photomalaysia.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74006. Its a very helpful article.

SpOOkY: Looks like some JPEG artifact - was Highlight Tone Priority on your 40D turned on? Try to get the same effect, then turn HTP off and see if it still appears.
alpha_company: The A900 has a top LCD screen while all other Alphas do not. However I don't use the top screen at all since it is of no use in portrait mode or in the dark (I'd rather look at the settings in the viewfinder, and the screen is still visible in strong sunlight.)
I think you should know whether a top screen is necessary coming from your D60 with the eye-sensor and auto reorient LCD in portrait mode. (Which was copied from Sony, and this feature first appeared in Minolta film SLRs.)

hey andy, i'm a a200 user myself... i think u should go for the twin lens kit... also... the 75-300mm will be good for ur macro shots... just make sure you get a Raynox DCR-250 Macro converter to get them damnkauchun bugshots! ....
and yea andy... if you like macro... ur gonna need a flash gun for really good results... if ya got the cash get yaself a HVL-F58AM! after that you're ready for any indoor and low light situations...
sony styles? huhu...sure no discount & freebies one... any other shop? other than sony styles laa...
KK already got a330 ka? i read on previous post in this thread...KK dont have a330...
IMHO, the a330 seriously has more turnoffs than turnons... saw one a few days back, looking at the grip already made me love my a200 so much more... if it was me, I'd get a a200/300 then get the new 18-55mm SAM lens for a kit lens... nice combo to start with...

yeap... ok la... i dunno but i think the A330 is for those who wants a DSLR but wants it small.... if so, go Olympus la! or Lumix! but why Sony!? why come up wit something like this!? because they can! not only it's small, but it's cheaper than competitors when it comes to smaller DSLRs.... this is definitely one for them gals on Tuesday night outs! the self timer for 5x continuous shots is proof!

yeah.. to be honest i dont use it at all..even tried my friend's d90 and d80.. heard that some outdoor pros that needs to shoot in the dark without the blinding lcd turning on to see their settings needs lcd on top.. read about it somewhere..

One girl from one of the previous TTs said to me in a private message that she preferred the grip of the A330. To each his or her own, I guess.
But yes, 5 shots after a 10 second timer is an amazing feature for the camwhore in you (or them).
noprob: Love the colors! Cropping off a bit off the right might help.
for small hands, the a330 is just perfect... but ya lo... everyone has their own opinion on the item...
alpha_company: I just press DISP to disable the rear LCD if I need to shoot without emitting any light. Can still see the settings in the viewfinder - every external button you press on the A700 (WB/DRIVE/ISO/EV/AEL), will show in the viewfinder so you can change settings inside without looking at the rear LCD.
For example, DRIVE mode 5 FPS is indicated by "oooH" while DRIVE mode Remote shows "rmt" in the viewfinder. Bracketing modes, Kelvin WB settings, are all shown inside.
The A200/A300/A350 also shows ISO and DRIVE as they are external buttons. For the A330 when you change FLASH mode it also shows in the viewfinder (a new addition.)
SIGH! The 11-18 has been sold this morning. Damn fast. ):
Huhu .. Its a HOT item !

Body got built in HSm wan meh? Hmmm than read a review by kenrockwell on the Sigma 10-20, he say its not that sharp compared to others wor. But he using Nikon la.
body only go AF motor... hehehe... I think the HSM motor is for AF also rite? so, since sony have built in AF motor, don't think you need a built in motor on the lens neways...

have to order? erkk...doesnt sound good to me as i'll only stay at KK for 2-3days... if i ask the shop to order...do u think they give freebies? just wondering...
HSM = Hyper Sonic Motor. Makes AF and almost everything faster. ):
faster sometimes doesn't mean better right? hehehe.. not necessary...
QUOTE(dingenius3 @ Jun 29 2009, 04:59 PM)
ya la.... motor in lens like HSM will make AF much faster than the screw driven thingy on the body...
but in siggy 1020 case.... iinm.... HSM for C&N.. worth around RM2.2k.... while non HSM for alpha is around RM1.8k
SONY MOUNT FTW! I'd get a sony la for UWA... or just get my hands on a SAL16105... not just UWA lens, but TELE also! more flexible to me...

This is the real fathers day... the day when one becomes a father...
QUOTE(dingenius3 @ Jun 29 2009, 05:08 PM)
that is indeed quite weird.... no motor in lens price still the same with HSM? go buy him some lens for a gift... btw.. happy "early" fathers day too...
Eh... hehehe... thanks guys...
QUOTE(5za9 @ Jun 29 2009, 05:16 PM)
moo, better buy new SAL 11-18mm. i heard that siggy 10-20mm at 10mm is not wide as 11mm on SAL 11-18mm. maybe im wrong. i dont know. need advice from the other who have it.
heard that to... about a few V back... but i think it was a comparison where both SAL1118 and Siggy 1020 were set at 11mm and compared as to which one was wider... and SAL1118 was wider... go figure...
Banzai_san, ayenz : should try and ask kysham or ryzan... they're both from kk... they should know where to look for alphas

Wa why drop 10-20 into sea? Pluck it out and faster sell to me ma. ): Who's that anyway? Hmmm. SAL 1118 abit expensive la. But easier to find used 1 la. (:
you've got to be kidding me ... how did it happen?! when? why??? aiseh....

yup, i use my F58 wirelessly and set full power for this shot. there's actually another strobe light at her right which is kinda underpowered due to my noobness of setting the strobes and end up getting underexposed picture. the picture shown are a combination of 2 images of the original and a slightly overexposed image of the latter (thank you photoshop).
takpe bro, nnt biler turun kl lagi kite try2. hehe

yea..hand itchy this afternoon..so thinking of trying sp90 for portrait again...
yea man i tried ryzan's espee90 and did a portrait too, damn that baby is sharp! of course 5cm is typically preferred for portraits, but i'm way comfortable wit longer focal lengths, boon3's KM85mmf1.4, ryzan's Tamron SP AF90mm f2.8 and of course albnok's SAL135F18Z.... but this i think is a matter of personal preference la, sometimes 35mm is favorable too...

not only faster, quieter! the in-body motor is noisy la at times... not to mention if the lens barrel big big wan the motor has this mini vibration feel to it... SSM dun have all this...

erh,for me, portrait musnt always be 50mm....however,the longer the focal length the dreamier the bokeh (provided you shoot at the biggest opening) i think i like 50mm and 85mm primes but 85mm is pretty restricted oh?

just of a matter of preferences... coz my fren does bought his alpha at SS... some people get the feeling ease of mind coz they get their stuff from the brand outlet itself.. not just from other retailer...

cannot just say built in motor because there are differences. say tamron 1750 with built in motor and sigma 1850 hsm. the sigma has faster af because of the hsm and not the normal motor. normal motor like in tamrons are noisy and slower.
even canon's usm has two type of motors..one fastest and one slower..if im not mistaken the fastest usm is the ring type..and slower dont remember the name.

alright noted, i'm still learning..thanks for the comment =)
dingenius3, SAM and SSM are not the same. SAM isn't totally silent and while you can overrride focus, the ring is a lot stiffer.
I would prefer they differentiate SAM and SSM - Canon doesn't differentiate between their cheap USM and the good ring USM (same class as SSM, HSM and SWM).
And yes, in-lens motors are not necessarily faster (even the SSM/USM/HSM/SWM ones), there are so many other factors.

or did the lil gurl saying bye bye and going to the darkside ar?
haha..the first pic i nv dodge inside the eyes bcoz it very dark inside..nomatter how much i dodge it wouldnt make any diff..don feel like adding artificial catch light for that pic..so i nv touch it.. =)
for 2nd pic..there r some reflection there..so i'd just make use of that =D ambient like wise..i did it on purpose bcoz there is abit messy inside the room..don wanna let it spoil the picture =p
