I saw this link. This is for a700. Got pic/diagram of some gears. Maybe your case similar to that. The teeth of the gear strip.

Is this what it means by stripped gear?

The camera does not produce such sound when I remove the lens and turn it on. Seems like it really has got something to do with the lens.

I hope Sony Centre can fix this sad.gif

Oh my blink.gif . Dat is bad. That's why sometimes, its just best to buy old manual focus prime lens. Your only worry is fungus. biggrin.gif

dingenius3: Actually, infrared registers as purple. It's Photoshop that makes it white.

I dun understand rclxub.gif . Shouldn't infrared be some color towards the red but unfortunately we cannot see it? Shouldn't ultraviolet be towards the blue/violet purple end of the spectrum? hmm.gif

HiroBoroi: Infrared has no color. However, every sensor I have ever seen registers it as purple.

Cameras with stronger IR block filters should not use the R72 filter - the R72 lets in a lot of red. If you see red, that just means that for the same long exposure, it has let in more red than infrared.

I have a China-made 950nm filter which gives a strong filtration such that longer exposures do not let in any red... the downside being that there is no false color and all of the exposure is purple.

An alternative is to use the R72 with a pair of polarizers at maximum darkening (which cut off the red side of the spectrum, so you get pure infrared.)

albnok,

Thanks for the reply. If I use a 950nm filter, will I need to expose longer? flex.gif At present I'm using the Hoya R72 filter and I need about 30 seconds exposure to get something on the histogram. The exposure direct from the camera as you say is very red. I think the D90 has very aggressive IR filter (on its sensor) compared to the D40. Only solution is to do open heart surgery on my D90 ... but scared la shakehead.gif .

Lastly, how much is the China-made filter? Hopefully that will be a good cheap experiment to try out. Also where to get? drool.gif
