i keep reading saying that KU31 is bang for buck....but not many mention why its bang for buck?

hows the grip for dry roads?
hows the grip for wet roads?
how stiff is the sidewall?
is it suitable for track?

all question compared to KU36, R1R and Potenza series
*
the 3 tires you mentioned cost more than the ku31. and r1r with 140 treadwear is into semi slick rating smile.gif
also, kumho comes with 2 version of ku36. once was china made comfort ku36 and another one was ecsta ku36 which is performance orientated and comes in limited size.
again, dry and wet grip is good for its price. 205/45/r16 used to cost less than 250 last year while the re001 and r1r you're comparing with cost more than 300 bucks. in term of price and performance, the ecsta ku31 even beat the lousier yokohama a drive r1.
if you're used to re001 sidewall, just stick with re001. even the discontinue ad07 has a softer sidewall compare to re001.
i've seen people using ku31 for track. although its not really suitable.

not sure leh... Klang u can go to Jalan Kapar... Ban Hooi or Hin Leong...

185/55 R15... that tire i throw away after 50% wear... the grip in wet is sucks, down slope i brake slowly also it activated my ABS... after change to Michelin PP2, Hankook V12, now Michelin PS3 no such problem... even my PP2 wears until the thread indicator it's grip in wet is definitely better than NCT5...
if you wanna have comfort... C Drive 2 is for you... never trusted Conti tires after 1 set, give me problem only... CC5 is a new tire but it is also an entree level tire, so it does not attracts me... i'm more prefer towards premium comfort or performance tires... as it the performance of both is better than entree level...
skip Bridgestone MY-01 or the turanza series, Conti CC1/CC5/SC1, Yokohama A Drive, Michelin XM1/Certis, Goodyear NCT5/Exellence/Assurance and some others... those grip is ok ok although it's description is written with nice flowerish things but the grip isn't that good...

Yokohama C Drive 2 have this size meh??? hmmm might consider it also if it has... i also need a soft tire for my conti...

my prefer tire for 185/55 R15 Michelin PS3, this size is a lil odd also so many ppl change to other 195/50 R15 (alternative for 185/55 R15, closest size to it) or even 195/55 R15 (more comfort, a lil larger than ori size)..
for 195/50 R15 or 195/55 R15 u can try few others like Yokohama C Drive 2, Michelin Primacy LC, Hankook Blackbird V2, Continental Premium Contact 2(premium comfort range)... then the performance range (performance tires normally a lil noisy and not as comfort as the premium comfort) u can choose Michelin PS3, Federal 595 Evo, Toyo T1R or DRB, Hankook V12, Kumho ESPT (KU-31)... happy surveying...
*
Do you you know how much is Toyo T1R for 205/50R16? Heard my friends said Toyo is quite good, but expensive right? If you were me Yokohama C Drive 2,Hankook V12 and Kumho KU31 which one you'll choose and what's the price for that? Thank for your help

that tire... not good in wet as i heard of... and noisy... Michelin PS3 will be better than it...
it has soft sidewall, so it is comfort but not good for high speed corner... the dry traction is ok, but wet is not as good as PS3 and Hankook V12 too... further more it is more expensive than V12, so i'll take V12 anytime for the value... PS3 should be around it's price too... so i couldn't convince myself to try it when i wanna change my tires last time...

Hankook V12 do not have 205/50 R16... for me I can try both C Drive 2 or KU31... if you prefer comfort i think u better not upgrade to 16" as the tires is not as comfort as you get in 15"... for 15" u can try to put 195/55 R15 to get more comfort... and the tires is cheaper by around RM100/pc too... Hankook V12 205/45 R15 RM300++ but 195/55 R15 around RM220... PS3 195/55 R15 is around RM260 but 205/50 R16 is more than RM400...

if you are not willing to pay more than RM300/tire pls stay put at 15" as the price increase the good tires at 16" will increase also... current 16" tires is more than RM300 already last time you still find Hankook V12, V8rs or Kumho KU-31 is lower than it... but now it seems the price increase has push them above RM300 already...

further more you concern about the rim bent, lower profile tires will get cause that too... not only lightweight rims... then you FC, acceleration will be affect too...because of 16" u need more torque to turn the more heavy wheels, then u press ur accelerator harder, so ur FC will turn poorer too...

it is individual choice... i put my stand at 15" coz i'm not willing to pay more than RM300/tire, i do not want to affect my FC too much, i do not want my FC increase by much too (although PS3 will increase your FC already)... lastly i do not wan the bent rim problem to0 coz the lower profile the tire is the more bumpy will be too...

*** important***
u cannot fit 205/50 R16 into your City coz it is more than 3% of your OE (stock) size... maximum u can only fit 205/45 R16...

this is the message i got from the online tire size conversion page...
QUOTE
Warning! When changing tire sizes, we recommend staying within 3% of the diameter of the original tire.  Any more than this and you face the risk of brake failure.

Online Tire Size Conversion page... key in you stock size and the new size it will tell you if it is ok or not...

Michael, i have some question which is damn noob here.. I am using 205 50 16. If i were to upgrade my rim to 17 inch. But i want the FC and power to be not much affected. Do you think possible? using lower profilre tyres?

u need to find a set of nice lightweight wheels and stay up at 205 width... try 205/45 R17 and see...
but as long as u upgrade the FC will jump a lil even i did not upgrade my 15" i only change the tire from 185/55 R15 to 195/55 R15 will affect the FC too... then depends on the tire that u use... performance tire high rolling resistance to also affect FC too...

frankly speaking... what is ur OE size??? u should go back from there... if you already upgrade ur rim or tire size then that should not be the reference for further upgrade...

waja stock 16" is 205/50/r16. so, 205/45/r17(slower speedo reading) or 215/40/r17(faster speedo reading) is fine with minimal tolerance in braking capability, fc and speedometer reading. make sure to get the lightweight wheels.
also, you need to look at the suspension setup coz' 215 with profile 40 / 45 width might touch the inner fender during heavy load.

OE is 195 60 15. Hahaha... I upgrade to 205 50 16. But very hard to find tyres.. Saw V12 today at Teck Ming and so envy others can use but dont have for my size. If use 55 series then a bit heavy and not so nice during cornering. 50 is the nicest already. So no choice have to use V8.

PP2 is Asymmetric la... it is more quiet...
KU31 is directional... should a slightly more noisy than PP2...
price, i'm not sure woh... last time my fren have Kenari, used both also PP2 is better but KU31 value for $$$$... ur call which to buy lo...
Sorry, used the wrong term. I mean both ku31 n pp2 both need to roll in single direction only.
How bout toyo teo plus? Any idea bout the pricing n performance?
http://www.toyojapan.com/tires/pattern/tyt...tyteplus_01.jpg

Would prefer non directional n symmetrical tyres for easier rotation, and quiet. smile.gif

Teo Plus is a comfort tire which means performance wise it will never beat PP2 or KU-31... the price is a lil high too coz made in JP kua... at 185/60 R14 it cost me at RM220 which is the reason i rather upgrade my rim size to 15" to use performance tire... smile.gif

RE001 is from 15" onwards and RE050 is at 17" onwards... some website place RE005 or 005A at Max Performance which is 1 step up from the RE001 Ultra High Performance... for the threadwear rating RE001 is not mistaken was at around 280 or higher, but RE005 is at 140 which will wear faster then u expected...

Seems better performance tyres mostly directional, I might give them a try. But, there's another choice in mind, hankook v8rs. How's the performance as compared to ku31 ? PP2 is out, unless it's cheap. Hehe.
Are they similarly price?

How much increase in fc to be expected as compared to entry level tyres? 5 % ?

both re001 and re050 has a speed rating of 'w'.
also, re050 is more sticky with 140 tread wear rating(semi slick rating) while re001 rated at 220.

for your size 165/55 R14 the difference between KU31 and PP2 is not that big difference... around RM30/pc if not mistaken... but for 195/55 R15 then it should be over RM50/pc... depends on shop offer also...

well not that much i think it is around 3%, depends a lot on personal driving style too... V8rs also not bad but it is a lil age, it had been replaced by V12 but too bad some of the sizes is not available on V12 too...
