yeah our internet still expensive.... even for streamyx combo, the cheapest one is rm 60, do you believe makcik/pakcik in the kampung2 can "paid" this.... even their utilities bill like electricity and water below than rm 20 (that mean you get free if live at selangor) so do you think they want to pay rm 60 for slowest speed of internet????(in their heart say better save this money...heheheh) hope our government talk to tm to revise back the price of internet....

my humble thinking.... not more than that....
*
Yes this is the issue. Just like any brand new technology, the price will eventually be reduce as demand increases and technology advances. Its just like when the PC just came out, it was very expensive back then..RM4999 for Pentium233Mhz processor. Not everyone uses the PC back then.

Initiative to provide quality service on the part of TM is a different story though.. rolleyes.gif

i've just asked a fren of mine working in sg, he still will d/l stuffs like movies, mp3, software etc from internet ... according to him, gov will only track down those who d/l anime. and if they catch, they will do it randomly.
*
Good to know. Well at least the broadband pricing is better so you can spend the money on say.. VPN or tunneling to mask what anim* your downloading.

QUOTE(ic3rock @ Apr 19 2009, 11:03 AM)
Franky say, i using starhub 8mb speed but its abt the same speed compare with streamyx 512kb. B4 i apply the internet, the ppl say 8mb juz for normal surfing, wtf. If u wan for gaming, must well get 100mb, zzz. So for me, its nt much diff even it stat 8mb or wad.
*
The point of having 8mbps is to download online gaming upgrades/patches since you dont want to spend a long time updating your game, to play the game. Gaming generally requires less than 1mbps to operate.

QUOTE(myvi5949 @ Apr 19 2009, 11:19 AM)
This is what i am trying to say earlier..  nod.gif Though internet may be a part of everyday life for us younger generations.. a lot of people still do not know (or even want to) go online. Internet is not a priority.

Though the internet is an essential part of communication.. We are still a developing country..
If i am the Prime Minister, I would prioritize road works over the internet. Majority ALWAYS wins.
*
The problem is, majority doesn't win. Proof? Nobody is pissed (at least nobody who MATTERS in the media industry) to even lift a finger to give so much as a nudged to TM to WAKE THE F*CK UP and realize there're being sh*theads and not doing their job properly.

Like some ppl said, some ppl don't even use the computer, the internet? Yeah the have definitely heard of it but since they live in rural areas, they cant use it even if they want to (no coverage in the 21st century for a country the size of MALAYSIA, nice TMnet!).

QUOTE(oumind @ Apr 19 2009, 10:19 AM)
For RM 88 or S$37, we get 1Mbps plan (advertised rate) in Malaysia.  However for S$35, you can get 8Mbps plan from Singnet (http://www.singnet.com.sg/plans_and_services/broadband/snbb.asp?snbb=8Matl).

So what are the reasons broadband is more expensive in Malaysia?

The usual reason given is Malaysia is bigger, so more costs required for cables and other equipments.  This may be true in the beginning.

Another reason given is lack of competition.   We may have at least 2 nationwide 3G broadband providers, but we have monopoly for wired broadband area.

Please enlighten me :-)
P.S.  Try not to complain in this thread, there are many other threads for complaining.

I am having problems with screamyx too.

But to be fair, u cannot compare a small develop country like Singapore with a bigger developing country like Malaysia.

Its time for government to review its policies on ISP services.
*
I would be laughing if they use "Malaysia is bigger than Singapore" as an excuse. What about Korea, Japan and US? They are bigger than Malaysia.

The policies needs a change and competition is needed. Companies will work harder when they get a competition.

Anyone working for a ISP, what is your view or explanation for this 'expensive' issue?

Yea. Couldn't agree more. In Japan, I remembered broadband cables are placed on poles before coming to your house, much like electrical wires here. Thus, it would not be wrong to say that the overall cost to roll out broadband is cheaper over there. However, that shouldn't really matter as with competition, broadband prices can be driven down no matter the circumstances.

On the other note, I've recently read an article on Star Biz and was surprised to find that the broadband penetration rate of Malaysia is on par with that of South Korea and Taiwan back in 1996. Now, the delta is super huge. I wonder what were we doing over the past 1 decade. We could have been a nation with blazingly fast and cheap broadband connection if it wasn't for TM Net's reluctance to open up its infrastructure.

even if penetration is same , there are still factor liek when streamyx is introduce , how many ppl can afford 512 with hourly charge those day ....

surfing with 128kbps(dial up) compare with 1Mbps is pretty big ....

well , the progress is not that good for streamyx since 1996 then i guess

You know.

I wouldn't mind streamyx giving me 1Mbps, so long they PROVIDE this speed 95% of the time.

Of course they can't even do this, even when others are offering 8Mbps.

Honestly, those running TM has no sense of pride. smile.gif

1996 you say. What broadband was there then? In 1996, the 28.8K modem I bought was top end and Jaring didn't have full 28.8K coverage even in KL. 64K ISDN was the next step up if you could afford it.

Is this information confidential? People in ISPs cannot talk about their industry either the truth is 'shocking' or due to 'self-regulation'.

You must be abit slow in something. Googling turned out this result : http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?f...87&sec=business

Noteworthy is that back in 1996, when the Multimedia Super Corridor was first conceptualised, Malaysia was at par with South Korea and Taiwan in terms of broadband penetration rates. Today, we are miles behind in terms of broadband penetration while these countries have steadily forged ahead.

There fixed biggrin.gif

The Penetration rates was done by statistics and survey before rolling DSL into the land.
