On the other note, I've recently read an article on Star Biz and was surprised to find that the broadband penetration rate of Malaysia is on par with that of South Korea and Taiwan back in 1996. Now, the delta is super huge. I wonder what were we doing over the past 1 decade. We could have been a nation with blazingly fast and cheap broadband connection if it wasn't for TM Net's reluctance to open up its infrastructure.

1996 you say. What broadband was there then? In 1996, the 28.8K modem I bought was top end and Jaring didn't have full 28.8K coverage even in KL. 64K ISDN was the next step up if you could afford it.

Thanks for bringing that article up, but it doesn't address my question. What broadband was there to speak about in 1996?

I don't think any broadband worth speaking of existed back then. My guess is that the reporter slipped up and wrote broadband penetration instead of internet penetration.
